Unlike most, walk in, look in a book, and get a tattoo places, Tattoo Odyssey runs on appointment only. Â They have 2 days (Tuesdays & Thursdays from 2-9pm and Saturdays from 1-6pm. ) where you can walk in and ask someone about your tattoo. Â It was a 30 minute drive for me (I live in center city), but I'm really glad I did.
After a string of horrible tattoo parlor visits, I nearly gave up on my mission. Â I had a fairly simple request--to add a phoenix to my existing dragon. Â I had gone to several places with my very clear drawing (drawn in Adobe Illustrator) of what I wanted. Â More than one place said they couldn't do it or I wasn't being clear enough. Â In other words, I had to look at their pattern book and pick one. Â
Gil, on the other hand, actually draws his work. Â I had a clear idea, so
perhaps it was easier, but I saw people go in with very vague ideas and come out with something amazing. Â From the time you come in, he actually takes time to figure out exactly what you want. Â They require an initial $50 deposit, which they will subtract from the final cost. He'll then take about 2 weeks to draw it and make sure it's perfect before starting. This place is pretty popular, there will be a 4-6 week wait. But believe me, it is absolutely worth it.
The work itself was very precise. Â As a former draftsmen (for a very short time) Gil has excellent line quality. Â He's also an amazing artist with an major eye for detail so the shading will be perfect. Â He didn't just take my drawing and trace it on there. Â He redrew it so that it matched my old tattoo and shaded both to look like they had been done at the same time. Â
I originally went in there around September and it was finally completed in November (after 2 sittings). Â The whole place was very attentive. They called me when he finished the drawing, and made sure to remind me of my appointments. Â To top it all off, the price was very reasonable. Â He didn't charge by the hour like most places, he gave me a flat rate up font so I knew exactly what to expect. Â
You may be hesitant to wait 4-6 weeks, but there is no doubt that I made the best choice I possibly could have made. Â It's incredible work at a really good price, so I guarantee you will be glad you waited.
