No appointments; walk-in's only. Â (as explained to me by Cort, "the more they promise they'll show up, the less chance they will") Â At the time of this review, the shop is open from Tue-Sat 1p-7p. Â Either call during those hours (if he doesn't answer, it's because he's working), or send an email (I received a reply after a few days) giving a short outline of what you'd like done.
Here's your best tip for getting work done here - KNOW WHAT YOU WANT. Â This is not a place to walk into for your first piece, or if you're ambivalent on what you want done. Â Some artists will work with you to discuss your options, Cort just wants it black and white, and doesn't like when customers aren't sure of their decision and begin asking questions.. I got the "NO QUESTIONS!" a few times, giving me flashbacks to the 'Soup Nazi' Seinfeld character when one - or three, or four - happened to stumble out of my mouth, but like the cook in the sitcom, Cort knows his stuff (and has better taste in music too). Â So be confident about what you want, bring in a sample or two (I think more than that might be distracting), and sit still.
Prices for the quality of the work he does are more than reasonable. Â My entire time there was a little over 2 hours (including introductions, mock-ups, placement, and then the tattooing) and ran me $160. Â I was particularly pleased with Cort's meticulous placement process, since I was getting a pair of chess pieces on opposite sides of my chest (to flank an existing work) and getting them even was really important to me.
This is a solo-artist shop (and extremely clean may I add), so if you're a walk-in and he's already got a client, you're going to have to come back later. Â The up-side of this is that the work is very consistent and concentrated - no side-shop-talk to distract, no egos or on-going feuds to pull away attention. Â
He also does work on skate/longboards too. Â Unfortunately, the website seems a little dated (and for me the pictures posted would not expand to full size) but stop by and get some good work done!
