I recently got my second tattoo here with Yvonne. She's so damn cool! I was a bit scared and super busy. I had made an appointment back in February, but had to keep rescheduling due to my workout regime and she was willing to work with me. I would've thought I got on her last nerve, but she was so patient with me! So two months later, now in April, I finally got it! She did such an amazing job.
I had human revolution tatted on me, except in Chinese and she totally pinned pointed it down. I got it on my left side rib, but more towards the back due to her good judgment and I thought it'd hurt a lot, but it wasn't as painful as I had expected it to be because so many have told me it hurts like no other (maybe Asians just take pain better from all the beating we get as kids? haha JK!) She made me so comfortable the whole time by just talking and having a really good wholesome conversation. I'd definitely recommend her if you're looking to get script or type!
I'm coming back for my third with her, but I just have to think about it still. haha!
I read about this place, formerly Bert Grimm's, known as the oldest tattoo shop in America. Here's a description from their web site: 'Kari Barba purchased and restored the historic Bert Grimm's tattoo studio, the oldest tattoo shop in the United States, second oldest in the world. Bert Grimm's studio was a big part of Long Beach's navy history and is the ONLY business from the original Pike still operating. Known as Outer Limits since 2007, this studio now offers a museum showcasing some of Long Beach's hostory, a high-end body piercing studio and jewlery store, and of course world class tattooing."
I did not get a tat but if I ever decide to get one, this is the place I would  come. Fascinating museum with old photos of people Bert tattooed long ago. Friendly and clean and welcoming to all.
Brandon Flores is remarkable. I cannot stress that enough! First off, his tattoos are amazing. But he's also just a really cool guy to be around and seems very humble. I first got a tattoo from him when he worked at Outer Limits in Anaheim (Closed now). I've followed him to Outer Limits Long Beach! He's always exceeded my expectations, and I've recommended him to all of my friends. They've also been very happy and will be coming back to him! All the artists are great though, and their portfolios online are definitely worth a look!
The shop itself is super clean, and has a great atmosphere. Everyone is super friendly, and so talented! Getting a tattoo is serious business, so while it's pricey.. I don't think you want a tattoo that isn't done well OR a tattoo artist who doesn't have clean methods! Cleanliness is very important in this shop. The actual artists are just so amazing, and you can find the right artist for any tattoo you want. The way it works is you call or come in to schedule a consultation first with the artist you want. When you finish your consultation, you'll make a deposit (which is part of the overall price) and set an appointment date for the actual tattoo.
The artists are very practical here and will tell you which one suits your tattoo idea the most!
Parking is nearby and there are multiple options:
-Parking structure for the Pike. It's $1.50 every half an hour and seems pricey. Also has a daily limit of $24 unless you go get it validated. So if you plan to eat before or after getting tattooed or doing something in The Pike, this could work for you.
-A meter by the parking structure. $2 in quarters an hour. 2 hour limit so you'd have to come back to refill it if you need more but there are many meters nearby.
-$5 ALL DAY parking lot off Ocean Blvd across from Rock Bottom. If you're not sure where this lot is, they have directions to it in the shop if you ask for it. But it's a very convenient and cheap parking lot close by. The walk is really only about 5 minutes to get from the lot to the shop. Best option!
The shop rate is $150 an hour but it's definitely worth the price for something permanent on your body. Love this place and can't imagine getting tattooed anywhere other than an Outer Limits shop.
This if my first time at the Long Beach location, but my third Tat with Yvonne at OLT.  I've had the opportunity to provide my ideas and wants to Yvonne and she runs with them with her experience and skills.  I trust her opinions and recommendations which resulted in three awesome Tats.  My visit to the LB location was great, it is settled in the downtown area and at location of the oldest shops in the USA.. how cool is that.  The place is clean and sterile with plenty for the visitors to look at even if you're browsing.  It is somewhat like a museum of  Bert Grimms Tattoo studio back in the Navy days...there are hints of anchors and marine decor throughout.  I spent about 30 mins enjoying the historic photos of the LB tattoo shop and its history back in the day.  Also on display are some of the current tattoo artists art pieces on the wall which was really cool to see.  There is street parking with meters when there are no downtown LB events, otherwise there is a parking structure a block away. Â
A hint for customer looking to visit the shop for a tattoo or piercing. Â Out of consideration for the artists its always good to call ahead for consultation and appointments. Â But even if your just cruising the neighborhood it is definitely worth stopping by for a visit to get some additional information.
I've been meaning to write a review for this place for a long time. I got my first and only tattoo last year in April 2012 by Kari Barba. I wanted a hummingbird on my back in memory of my brother. She did an amazing job. She made me feel real comfortable throughout the whole process. Ya I was whimpering like a little baby, but she was so fast. It took her less than 2 hrs to create a masterpiece! It looks so real and the wings look like they're in motion. I couldn't be any happier with my first tattoo. Many many thanks!!!
Review Source:Had my first session a few weeks ago with the brilliant Shay Bredimus.
Foot tatties are not the business, but he was patient even though I was such a baby about it. I'm getting an "impossible" cover up done and although we only had the one sesh, it already looks like "impossible" is indeed a misnomer. After three hours of my squirming we were done for the night (my call). Shay made sure to give me proper care instructions
The shop itself is clean and they make sure to abide by all the health codes set by... well whoever sets them. It's located in a historic building and parking is in a structure soooo be aware.. or you can always ride your bike/get dropped off/ take a bus/ walk half a mile to the $5 lot? It won't hurt ya. :)
Can't wait to go back and see Shay... not looking forward to the actual tatting process but at least I can be confident that i'm going somewhere quality, clean and welcoming.
Also, I will definitely be posting before/after pics when all done!
So two of my coworkers and I really wanted to get tattoos, and we decided to go together. One of my other friends had found this place online and I was really itching to try it. I had done a lot of research on it and viewed all of the artists profiles before I went...honestly, I would have been happy getting any artist as they all have amazing tattoos! So we headed down there on Sunday, and, unfortunately, couldn't get tattooed that day (understandable) so we scheduled for the next day. I left some pictures of what I wanted - a baby lion on my ankle - and couldn't stop thinking about it for the rest of the day.
When I left my pictures, I left them with Erika, who I found out was going to be tattooing me. I described what I wanted and she seemed on board. I left a deposit as well and told her I would see her the next day.
My tattoo took about an hour and a half and, though extremely painful, turned out amazing! Honestly, it looks like a painting, and I love it so much. I have three previous tattoos from different places and I can say confidentely that this is the place I will be coming back to, and Erika will be the girl I book! Seriously, she's amazing!
So thank you Outer Limits for making me one very happy girl...and thanks Erika!
I had been looking around LA for quite awhile for the right tattoo artist. It wasn't until I moved to Long Beach and came across several people that had their tatt's done from Outer Limits, that I found what I was looking for. I made an appointment with Kari Barba. She own's the shop and a few other locations. She has been doing this for over 30 years. I fully put my trust in her and was not disappointed. She is an amazing artist, and it's worth paying more for someone that talented. Her other artist in the Long Beach location are also pretty talented.
Review Source:Well all I can say is i wanted hello kitty and i got a awesome half sleeve of her and her gang. I gave Nakota an idea of what i was looking for and she went above and beyond my expectations!!! She was very professional and knowledgeable and above all everything was very CLEAN!! the environment there was really nice, not at all shady like some places ive been in. Anyway, I Love my tattoo and get so many compliments....it was even showcased on a hello kitty website :) I highly recommend Nakota her range of artwork is unbelieveable! I would definitely come here again!!
Review Source:When I came into Outer Limits I had a rough idea of the back piece I wanted. It was sheer luck I was linked up with Nakota. She was friendly and professional from the start. I explained the piece I wanted but I only had a picture of the main element. I wanted to see what she would come up with, you know...being the artist and all. She told me she would sketch it out and add elements and we could discuss. I came back to look at the sketch and was blown away. Nakota captured everything and truly listened to the end result I was looking for. She incorporated elements I had not thought about and truly made it a unique piece. A piece that has gotten me compliments from total strangers.
Fast forward and we are almost done with my back piece and planning the next one. I referred a good friend of mine and she did another incredible job and now he is gonna get a portrait tattoo done. I was initially nervous but Nakota made me feel very comfortable with the whole process. Prices are fair and after every session I have healed up perfectly. The shop is clean, historic and I truly like coming here. Nakota also has paintings that she has done, incredible work...look up Nakota Art on FB. Great experiences that will keep me coming back!
I have 4 big pieces done by Nakota Garza and I love every one of them! Â Give her an idea and she'll draw you up something amazing with tons of vibrant colors. Â I love that she varies the line weight and how steady her lines are as well. Â Broad has talent and is a total tattoo prodigy! Insert heart symbol here.
Review Source:I have been getting work done by Nakota Hedrick for a few years. She is always on time, professional and a great conversationalist throughout each session. She is always up to date on what is happening in the tattoo industry and makes sure she is the leader of the pack. She does great work and knows her stuff. My tattoos heal up quickly and always turn out as bright as the day that I got them. If you are looking into getting a tattoo, this is the place to go and Nakota is your artist. While you're at the shop make sure to check out her paintings as well! and don't forget to "Like" her on Facebook! Thanks again Nakota!!
Review Source:The place was clean but the service was ehhh. Â The girl who offered to do my tattoo, Nakota, didn't like my tattoo idea. Â I was pretty discouraged. Â So I got something else I've always wanted and she felt a tad bit more OK about doing it. Â I was feeling weird about the whole situation but did it anyways. Â Now that it's all healed up, some of the outlining is missing. Â She made it a point to say "no touch ups" to me so now I am left with a tattoo on my arm that is missing some pieces.
Review Source:Ok, so I did it. I got inked. I live fairly close to hear and walk by it frequently so when I recently thought about getting a tattoo, I knew I was going to go here to ask. I wasn't really sure what to expect and read the reviews extensively (both good and bad). This is my first tattoo, so its a bit scary. I was overly prepared and had several sized tattoos printed out, which is actually really good for them.
Two ladies helped me make my appointment the first time I went in and I put down a $60 deposit. They referred me to Brandon. I wasn't sure about Brandon and then I came in for my next day appointment. He's young and all kinds of tatted up, but very nice and seems to know what he was doing. Granted my tattoo was extremely small and easy, but he was professional and did it quickly. He was really friendly and I think he was talking to me just to keep my mind off of the pain. It seemed really reasonably priced, however, I'm not sure how much this stuff usually costs either.
He also gave me specific after care instructions, probably because he could see I was a noob. It was done quickly and I am very very very happy! That said, I will NOT be getting another tattoo, but thanks Brandon!
"As good as it gets" - that's the truth. Staff is professional; atmosphere is chill. Shawn C. is right, "don't go anywhere else". Brian is a natural. Works with you on your concept and makes it a reality. DO NOT SHOP AROUND. NOTE: Street parking is metered; bring change... or park in the structure behind the shop.. its the structure for the Pike.
Review Source:3rd and FINAL session with Kari. Like Shawn C. stated, Kari has no attitudes and leaves all that outside the front door. She's professional, good with what she does (DUH...tattooing), she's nice and sweet and very welcoming. My last session took a little over an hour and when it was finally completed, I thought the Thai Phraya Nak (Thai Dragon) came out awesome. Check it out:

I'm not sure if I'll be getting anymore tattoos since I kind of went for the gusto with my first one, but if I were to get another one, I'd come back to Kari or any of the tattoo artists at Outer Limits Long Beach.
As soon as you walk in, you'll notice the clean establishment, someone will always acknowledge you even though they may be tattooing someone, and you never feel pressured or intimidated to just browse.
BTW....on both occasions for sessions 2 and 3, the shop always called you a day or two ahead of your appointment to remind you. Sweet! Thanks Kari and the tattoo artists at Outer Limits Long Beach.
I wanted to get worked on by Renan after seeing his portfolio online. Popped into the shop, spoke with him, and had him work a traditional clipper on my foot. The dude killed it! It was exactly what I had in mind but better. Coloring was spot on, clean lines, and shading is top-notch. He was very meticulous and and I didn't feel rushed or anything negative. Â This guy has an amazing portfolio and as far as traditional/classic tattooing goes, I haven't found anyone since moving here who even comes close to Renan. Pricing was absolutely fair for the work he did. I'm stoked this shop is only a few minutes from me. The rest of the people seemed cool as well. Couldn't be happier - thanks Renan!
Review Source:Been coming here for years! Got both of my sleeves done by Jeremiah and we are in the process of working on completing my whole leg. I drive up from San Diego just to get tattoo work done here so that should say a lot given how much talent is in SD.
The place is always clean. They are always concerned how I am doing while getting tattooed. Always asking if I need anything while im there. I wouldnt think about going to another tattoo spot!
Hands down a great place to get a tattoo or piercing!
I've had a few tattoos that I've wanted to get done for a while now, just was waiting for the right time. Decided to check out yelp to find a shop close to me, and picked Outer Limits. I went in today right before 11am (and they were already open!), hoping  just to make an appointment for later this afternoon. There were a few customers in front of me but I was helped within 5 mins, and told Billy what I was looking for. He told me that they were going to be super slammed all day, but he could fit me in right then! Perfect, I had an hour to kill before work. He was super quick to set up and get my lettering printed, but the second I sat down in his chair, it seemed like we had all the time in the world! A bit of small talk, nothing crazy, definitely more focused on getting his work right. My tattoo came out wonderfully. Perfect placement, and the basic lettering of which I was thinking. I'm definitely pleased at how accommodating and friendly the entire staff was... I'll be back for my next few pieces for sure!
Review Source:All I have to say is this - Don't go anywhere else for a tattoo!! If you want the best, the cleanest, the friendliest, the most creative then this is your place! I was very lucky to get Kari Barba to do my tattoo. I came in with a rough idea of what I wanted. My cousin had passed away and the 2 things he loved were fishing and playing games. So, I wanted a fish with the scales breaking away into Scrabble tiles that spelled out David. Kari nailed it! Her final drawing/sketch was a gazillion times better than what I had imagined. I get so many comments on my tattoo, and I have an awesome memorial to David.
Kari is willing to work with you and your ideas. My partner got a bad ass dragon tattoo from her and again, the work is amazing. My partner collects coins, so in the dragon's claw is a Mercury Dime. Amazing work.
Kari has a million awards, but she has zero attitude and seems almost embarrassed by her fame. She is a true professional and a joy to work with.
The store is so clean you could eat off the floor! The bathrooms don't smell which is a big plus! LOL The store is a museum for tattooing and the city of Long Beach itself. I love to wander around and look at all the photos of the store from days gone by.
You want the best? Go here. You want crap and pay less, go some where else. I love Kari and would travel 1000 miles to get her artwork on my body! Nuff said!
Best Tattoo shop on the planet. Nothing like getting inked in a historical place. Great staff, the only thing I would recomend is going at night or on Sundays...unless you dont mind hearing the worst music possible while you get hit up. Im not sure who runs the show during the weekdays but somebody needs to change up the tunes.
Review Source:I have had most my ink done by Outer Limits in Anahiem, but I was in the area of this location, and thought I would stop in to get a consultation on a new piece I wanted to get for my brother who had recently passed. Â I talked to the artist Billy, and gave him an idea of what I wanted... Â he did a quick sketch of what I described, and he nailed it. Â If I could draw, that would have been it! Â Luckily, he also works at the Anahiem location, which is close to my house... Â
I have dealt with dick artists in the past, and yea, they can soil you on an entire shop... Â but I have never had anything but great experiences with any of the artist I have dealth with at Outer Limits.
Laura Bullets is the bestest best tattoo artist in the entire world, and I love her, and she is more than welcome to permanently scar my flesh with the colors of the rainbow forever and ever. Â Amen.
No, but seriously, I called and made an appointment on Friday for the very next night, and booked with Laura. Â I knew I wanted her because I loved her so much from the last tattoo she did on me, her color shading is amazing and I knew by looking at her portfolio that she was definitely the one I wanted to work on my next tatt. Â She's also adorable and super fun and friendly to talk to, but I digress.
I got the Triforce from The Legend of Zelda tattooed on my back (you know, because I'm original as fuck). Â She drew up the outline of exactly what I wanted, and she's very good about talking you through it to let you know what she's doing and when she'll be done with this or that ("The outline is almost done, the coloring will be a lot easier on you!" etc.). Â When it was over, there were tears of joy, lots of laughter, and much embracing.
Okay, well, I'm exaggerating, but we hugged. Â And it was magical, just like Laura and her needle work.
Anyway, this place is amazing and all the people who work there are super friendly and awesome to be around. Â A++ for cleanliness and professionalism, and the pricing is INCREDIBLY reasonable. Â $60 minimum, $150 per hour for most artists, I believe the owner and another person charge a bit more.
Guys, do yourself a favor and come to this place for all your tattoo needs. Â You won't regret it.
(Also, did you know that it's the OLDEST TATTOO PARLOR IN ALL OF THE UNITED STATES? Â True story, bro. Â That's pretty fucking sweet and kind of awesome to bring up into the conversation when you're showing off your new ink.)
Very upfront but patient and helpful artists and employees, and a comfortable, clean environment. The nautical decor is nice and certainly appropriate in its reminiscence of the long-lost Long Beach Pike. It was neat getting a tattoo somewhere with such historical significance. It's supposedly the oldest tattoo parlor in the U.S.! The guy who pierced my ear didn't waste any time either, which was perfect. Very satisfied with what I ended up with each time.
Parking was kind of a bitch though. Make sure you have lots of quarters!
I don't understand all the Yelp reviews saying, "My tattoo artist didn't talk to me very much!" Â Or, "He hardly said 3 words!" Â These are tattoo artists! Not manicurists! Â They become tattoo artists for a reason. Â This is not a social call.
I walked in to inquire about an ankle tattoo and was given a quote and I made an appointment for the next day. Â I was asked to leave a small deposit, which I understood- I'm sure people chicken out all the time and waste that artist's time slot.
Ryan Needles was my artist. Yep, that's his name. Â And yes he was really quiet, just like I expected. Â But once I started a conversation, Â he started talking. Â He was very nice. Â I would return and ask for Ryan.
I really like the atmosphere here. Â Old wood, open, lots of light, nautical, pictures of the original Pike, and a bike rack out front. Â It's in the basement of an old building downtown, but open to a side street. Â So no foot traffic going by. Â You have to know where it is, but it is a good location for a tattoo parlor. Â They also do piercings.
A few of my friends had gotten piercings and tattoos at Outer Limits, so I figured it was my turn. About a year and a half ago, I got my nape pierced by John Johnson. I had to remove it 7 months later as it's a surface piercing and never heals (I miss it so much!). I also got 2 dermal anchors on my chest in March of 2010. John Johnson is very informative and helpful. He makes you feel very comfortable while you're there too. He walks you through step by step what he's doing and that helps ease the nerves a lot.
In October of 2010 I was toying with the idea of starting a zombie themed sleeve and figured I'd go back to Outer Limits. I looked through some portfolios and Jeremiah Barba's work was the exact style I was looking for. Needless to say, I booked a consult with him to kinda bounce ideas and he seemed excited about it. I've had about 7 sessions so far (almost done!!!) and I couldn't be happier with everything. Jeremiah has done such an amazing job on it... It's just so awesome having people come up to you and ask about it and who the artist is, etc. I couldn't have asked for a better artist! Also, all the staff at Outer Limits is always very friendly when I'm there and treat you like a person, not just a customer. I've been to a couple other tattoo shops and some artists are just very intimidating and not very approachable. Everyone at Outer Limits is warm and welcoming.
I'll always come back to Outer Limits :)
My friend has been wanting to get a tattoo for a while. I have read about Outer Limits in local publications and thought we should check it out. This business exceeded our expectations, very clean, very professional. Brian Ragusin was the gentleman that greeted us, booked the appointment and did the tattoo. I cannot not say enough good things about him. Brian put my extremely nervous friend at ease, explaining the entire process to her step by step, making us laugh the whole time. His work albeit a simple design turned out great and is healing without any complications, very thorough explanation of after care, thanks Brian!
I thought I would never do anymore work on myself but after meeting Brian seeing his work I am seriously contemplating my next tattoo.
I highly recommend this shop especially the artist Brian Ragusin. I know my friend will be seeing him again.
Recently got my 2nd tattoo here and was pleased with the experience. I went in and made an appointment, I didn't have a particular artist in mind because I knew exactly what I wanted, like I had it drawn out on stencil paper myself and just needed them to stick it on and fill it in.
Anyhow, made my appointment, put down a deposit and waited. Showed up on my appointment day only to find out my scheduled artist had gone home sick AND they'd had a computer malfunction and couldn't access the days appointments to call me to cancel. Wasted 140000 quarters in the meter and had to reschedule for the next week. It wasn't a super big deal, but it was kind of a let down, I get that these things happen, but I had to ding em a star for it.
A week later, I make it in for my real appointment. This time I park in the structure mostly because I'm out of quarters. Check in, fill out the paperwork, Laura has the stencils made and starts to lay them out. I make some adjustments, we move stuff around and when I'm satisfied, we start. An hour later, we're done and I'm happy. Tattoo looks great and I'm satisfied.
I really like the atmosphere here, it's SUPER clean and all of the tattoo artists are very friendly. They are just as friendly whether you're getting a teeny tiny tattoo on your wrist that no one will ever see, or a full sleeve. I've never gotten the too cool for you vibe from this place, whereas I've been to tattoo shops where the artists act like they're doing you a favor by allowing you to pay them for a service. So this place rocks.
I did a lot of research before getting my first tattoo and finally decided on this place. Â One, it's probably got the most history/character of any tattoo shop out there... and two, Shay.
During my research I came across the artwork of Shay Bredimus and it's actually what led me to Outer Limits. Â He is trained as a fine artist and represented by a gallery in west LA. Â I was really impressed by the style of his artwork and I loved the idea of a tattoo artist with roots in fine art. Â
The tattoo I wanted done was an intricate piece of artwork done by a friend of mine. Â It had a lot of spiritual significance and wasn't exactly an easy piece to get right. Â I wanted somebody who would 'get' the meaning behind the work and collaborate with me to adapt it tattoo form.
I walked in and had a chance to show Shay the artwork. Â Good vibes right away. Â He was super stoked about working on it and I felt like he understood the vision I had for the piece. Â
Aside from some challenges in setting up that first appointment (I recommend just walking in and setting it up) - everything went great. Â The piece turned out amazing - and I absolutely love it. Â I had a short time period in which to get in done (leaving Cali) - but Shay made it happen. Â He also put his own personal touch on the tattoo and adapted the face (the tattoo is of a spiritual warrior) to make it look more like a warrior of light (I was concerned it might look too 'dark'). Â
Brother did an amazing job. Â Shay is a gem of an artist and the type of guy who makes five hours of pain an enjoyable experience. Â I highly recommend getting your tattoo done with him!
Best shop period, Jeremiah Barba is an excellent artist and has been working on my leg for the past 6 months now. Parking is not bad unless your a lazy ass and don't want to walk two blocks to get your ticket validated. Stop your complaining everyone in the shop always makes my tattoo experience an awesome one.
Review Source:It's been about 2 months and I JUST realized....cbr (captive bead rings) hoop earrings are a PAIN to take off. He made it look SO easy - just apply pressure and it comes off. However I discovered otherwise...I kind of wish he gave more tips on how to take it on and off. So I will help:
- grasp the earring with your pointer and middle finger on sides of earring and your thumb on the ball of the hoop. When you apply pressure, it'll pop off (hopefully).
- when taking it out the opening might be too small. you can STRETCH OUT the hoop to make the gap bigger. yeah he never mentioned that...wish he did. Ehh...so now I'm like...3 3/4star? but since they don't have it here on yelp I'll just keep it at 4 :) good luck w/ your piercings!
A friend and I decided we wanted to get our second set of matching tattoos, it had been planned for a year, but we never had the opportunity so when the situation presented itself we we're dead set getting them done.
After searching for tattoo parlors that had time for walk-ins we stumbled on The Outer Limits Long Beach location.
Clean establishment, relaxing atmosphere, and great help from Laura Billets and Billy. Who ended up doing our tattoos in a boys vs. girls style.
Friendly conversations from both and it made the experience much more enjoyable.
I'd definitely be back for more.
Pretty typical tattoo shop with it's own twist. I went with my girlfriend to get a tattoo with Laura Bullets. I'll start off buy saying her work is amazing  and cheap too for what my girlfriend thought it would be. The place is clean, staff is okay, art work and photos around the place are really cool. The place was a little hard to find and parking sucks but besides that this place is cool. Thinking of going there for my next tattoo!
Review Source:I'm leaving this review for Kari and Chris. Kari was very instrumental in getting my artwork accomplished and if you have any doubt on the service and staff at Outer Limits then I suggest you speak with Kari. She was not only responsive but always available when I requested to speak with her about assigning an artist to enhance and old tattoo.
Chris was my artist and he was perfection. 6+ hours on the chair and the artwork came out beautiful. He hand sketched it on me, did the outline and added the shadowing. It was a long process, well worth the time and money to get it done right. See the pic that I added to their album and you can judge yourself.
Very grateful for the job and attention to detail. Thank you, thank you!!
For starters, the shop itself has heaps of character. I always feel weird going into shops that are plain and to the point. Outer Limits is like stepping back in time.
The staff was patient and un pretentious.
I had Laura Bullets work on my thigh for a grueling 3 hours. She was awesome and put up with me being a twitchy wuss. The work is top notch and Laura is a really cool kid.
Spend the money, get the quality.
J Barba is the man. Coming form an engineering background, I'm detailed oriented and  I did my research on different artists and wanted to find someone that was well known in the industry and knew what they were doing. Jeremiahs work caught my attention and I began to follow his work for about a year before I actually initiated contact to inquire about getting some work done.
Jeremiah is very professional and a really friendly and chill person.
He finished my piece in 3-4 hours with a small break in between to snack on some food and to give me a stretch break.
I had  mentally checked out in the last 30 minutes of getting tattooed cause that's when my arm got really sensitive. By the time he finished, I was exhausted and speechless. I will definitely be getting more work  from Jeremiah.
i've gotten 3 of my tattoos here, but i won't be coming back anymore
1] i won't mention his name, but i got 2 of my tattoos from one person, and i really wanted him to be my go-to-ink artist, but he didn't even remember me or the work he did, WTF?! that's just sad, i really wanted to feel special, but i guess not
2] prices are on the higher end, but that doesn't matter to me as much as the service, i'm really annoyed with the service. yes they are clean, but not professional, they are very distracted with the conversations they have going with their fellow artists/phone calls/ordering food/etc. etc. if i'm going to spend $150/hour, i don't want you being distracted and spending a good 20mins elsewhere.
3] parking is shit, you have to park in the structure, and they Don't validate here, you have to walk your ass to a candy store/ Borders to get validation, ugh, buy a freaking stamp and validate your customers esp when they spend hundreds and hundreds of ink.
There are no words to express how great this place is. The staff is really chill and awesome, they are cool folks. They seemed to care about what I wanted and were very knowledgeable. Â I highly recommend this place i have three tattoos and this place exceeded my expectations (thanks Shay =)....). I got my most important piece thus far done by Shay, and i couldn't be happier with it. It is not done just yet but i am excited to go back and get it done =).
Review Source:Absolutely love this place. Got a botched tattoo fixed up here by Shay and it went from pansy to amazing. He did an amazing job with the color, especially. He's got a Master's in painting and whatnot so he knows his stuff. His work is superb and absolutely amazing. So of course, I'm having him work on my next piece, and cannot wait to have it done.
If you want a real tattoo, custom designed and inked well, this is your place. Not to mention your tattoo will have the rep of being done at the oldest tattoo shop in the US. The artists here are legit. If you want a beautiful custom tattoo that you will love forever, go here! And ask for Shay!
The main piercer knows his stuff, too. Didn't get pierced, but I have 10 piercings, including nose, face, and belly button, so I talked shop with him and he's super knowledgeable, having previously been in the medical field and knowing all the medical terms for what he's piercing. I'd trust him with a needle over all others. Plus, they have a great jewelry selection, one of the best I've seen at a tattoo shop.
To sum it up, this place rocks. It's the best shop I've seen in LA County.
Tattoo shops and gun stores usually have two things in common, bad attitudes & bad customer service.
Not this place....
Polite, helpful, clean, no looking down on my wife because it was her first tattoo and she had a lot of questions..
Chris and the other people in the shop were the best ive ever seen. All I can say, if your even thinking of getting one, come here first.
I did it. I really did it. I joined the trend of scarring my body forever. But I'm really glad I did.
Once I had my design in mind, I called to set up an appointment, only to learn I'd committed my first foul of the tattoo world - you've gotta make your appointment in person (at Outer Limits anyway). So I went in on a Saturday afternoon and got myself (and Mr Q) an appointment for the following day.
I didn't request a specific artist, which I second-guessed myself about a thousand times before going back for my appointment, but, lucky me - it all worked out swimmingly... much to my surprise.
"Much to your surprise?" Yes. Here's the thing, the tattoo artist I ended up working with... well, let's just say his english skills were sub-par. Like... really sub par. And I was super nervous and almost ready to call off the whole thing, but I looked through his book, saw that a few guys in the shop had been tattooed by him, and decided to at least see the interpretation he came up with of my design before hightailing it out of there. ...of course, him being a hot, hipstery, Brazilian dude didn't hurt - English skills or not.
But we were able to communicate, through a mix of english, sign language, and a mash-up of spanish/portuguese... and it really did all work out. I think Renan (pronounced "hena" - don't ask me, I don't get Portuguese either) is only there temporarily or something, not quite sure, but I don't think I could be happier with my tattoo.
An hour later, I had the most perfect addition to my skin I could imagine - a letter "Q" Scrabble tile on my forearm, with awesome shading and precise lines and all. With Renan's limited English, one of the other tattoo artists walked me through after care and even gave me a sample of some Aquaphor to get started. Five stars all the way.
...and, yes, I did say a scrabble tile tattoo. You'd better believe it.
I read all the reviews before deciding to have my tattoo done here and had high hopes. I WAS SORELY DISAPPOINTED! The reviews must be written by friends or the artists themselves.
I've had 10 previous tattoo experiences and never felt less impressed.
The place was not clean as advertised, I did not feel welcome or appreciated as a customer, it was hard to even get anyone's attention to get service. When an artist was finally assigned to me he didn't speak English fluently nor was he an official Outer Limits employee, he was visiting from Brazil.
I had no discussion with the artist about what I wanted, if I wanted shading or black work, what specific colors I wanted, why I was getting the tattoo, nothing. He didn't say 2 words the entire time he was working on me.
I had to fill out an consent form but they never checked my ID, not even when they took a credit card as payment.
And, there were no aftercare instructions whatsoever.
As I said, tattoo's are not new to me and I usually really enjoy the experience. This was a disappointment in every way.
Got my tats here with Brian R. He is awesome. Simply the best!
A friend introduced me to him years ago. He used to work in Orange that time - same company, different city.
His work is amazing. He is just great. Have 3 tattoos done by him - and everyone admires them all. The fan on my back was the best. Just great, great, great!
1st time tat! Got a sentimental tattoo to honor the passing of my wife.
Upon entering, Matt was very kind and informative as we discussed a few things. He introduced me to Shay, who was equally professional and helpful. Gave Shay my ideas and made an appointment to return for the work. Shay did a great sketch and was very kind as we discussed specifics and changed some things here and there.
I was a bit nervous; not for the pain, but for just taking the leap into getting a tattoo. Shay was great about just talking while setting up and showing me how things work and what each piece of equipment does and the safety concerns that were in place. By the time we got the stencil set and was ready to start, I was feeling pretty good.
As we got close to finishing, Shay asked if it was OK to add a bit more color to really see 'light coming through'. He had a great eye. I thought it looked good before he added the extra color, but afterward, it made a huge difference! It was great that he really wanted to make an impression with his art; not just do what was asked - he went above and beyond.
Thanks Shay!!
Don't know if I'll get another tattoo or not, but, if I do, I will not hesitate to come to Outer Limit and ask for him.
Review of Piercing Services Only...
Last June, my brother and I came here to get matching septum piercings. We even got the exact same retainer. My experience getting pierced here was fantastic. John Johnson was extremely professional. I felt totally safe in his care! He was COOL, CALM, and COMFORTING! He even had me smell some lavendar to calm my nerves. I was totally satisfied with my experience. Prices are reasonable too and they have a fair selection of jewelry.
Just last night I went in to see what they can do for a tattoo that I was looking to get very soon. Â Immediately they were interested in what I wanted as both Shay and the front desk girl (sorry I forgot her name) came up front to help. Â They took the time to understand the background of my tattoo request and worked with me to turn my vision into something even better. Â As others had said, Shay was very patient with me and my questions and never made me feel that I was out of place. Â After drawing what we decided to be the final decision, instead of waiting until Sunday, he fit me in right away. Â I can honestly say I walked out of there with a tattoo even better than I had hoped. Â Thank you to Shay and the entire Outer Limits team for your work and great atmosphere.
If I ever get another one, I'm going back there. Â Aside from that, I already have another friend that will be going within the month as well due to my referral.
Ok, so there's a first time for everything and I would have never thought a tattoo was an option for me. Needless to say, I did it with the help of Shay! He was great and really patient with me. He knew exactly how I wanted it to look like and even offered suggestions. Great work on his part... but my tattoo was fairly simple too.
Thanks Shay for being so patient. If ever I get another one, I'm definitely coming back for ya!!!
I love this place! I stopped into the shop to get a piercing and ended up getting some EXCELLENT tattoo work done!
I had been thinking about extending my half-sleeve to a full sleeve for quite sometime. I ran across Mikey Vigilante after visiting the shop for a piercing. Mikey set me up with not 1 but 2 consultations to plan out my sleeve. He was professional and really took time to ensure he understood my "wants" and helped to translate those into an incredible work of art.
The project took several sessions to complete - I was so pleased iwth the work that we are now working on the next phase - I am so glad to have met Mikey and appreciate his talent and dedication!
Got a cover-up piece from this shop today and already know I will be back. Â
Stepping in, it was already a nice atmoshpere; nice-er than a lot I've been in. Â Three of the four artists on we're busy. Â The one not working on anyone was Ryan Needles, and with a name like that your calling's already chosen, right? Â
Ryan was able to get me in right away and was quick getting set up and making the stencil. Â We sat down and got to it. Â He worked pretty fast and would have taken almost no time, but there's quite a bit of shading. Â It would have been even faster without having to take a break to feed a meter.
I would say the price range would be two-and-a-half dollar signs, as what I paid, including tip, seemed reasonable porportionate to the work done.
Before I left, I talked to Mikey about another cover up I want to get done soon and I plan on being back as soon as I can.
Walked in without an appointment and a vague idea of what I was looking for but wasn't able to find anywhere else. I was a bit hesitant to share my idea because I figured it would be "boring" for a tattoo artist, since I'm into basic black/grey line drawings ... more primitive with very little intricacy. Geary was busy working on a sketch but took time out to discuss my idea with me, sketched something right then and there, and said "Let's do it!"
I absolutely love my newest tattoo and will definitely be back.
Both my husband and myself have had work done here by artist Shawn.  Shawn Humiston paid very close attention to our requests and also provided his artistic advice for details.  He was able to provide a sketch very quickly and we are both extremely happy with our results.  My tattoo that I received healed beautifully as did my spouses 1/2 sleeve.  Our tattoos are a couple of years old and we are frequently  asked where did we get our work done.
The shop is clean, top notch and very professional. Â Sadly enough for his loving clients Shawn has since retired from tattooing and has moved onto paint vs. ink. Â His whimsical sense of color and use of symbols are a feast for the eyes. Â Â :)
I had just recently got my nose pierced again at some store with a piercing gun  since they only charged me $25 (i should of known better from the first time) and after the second day, the stud on my nose was sinking further into my skin making a bigger hole!!  i was freaking out!  i was randomly searching for a professional piercing store in the southbay area, and i found Outer Limits.  I went there the same day, and John Johnson (the piercer)  was able to take out the stud for me...at no charge! He was very friendly, explained everything to me thoroughly.......and i learned my lesson NOT to ever get a nose piercing with a gun!  I'm definitely going back soon to get my nose repierced ...3rd time is always a charmer.  Great selection of piercing jewelry to choose from,  facility is big, very clean, staff is friendly, and i def recommend to anyone for tatt's or piercings.
Review Source:Great shop with great folks! Â I got a couple piercings by John Johnson and a couple tattoos by Mikey Vigilante. Â I've had my share of negative experiences when it comes to tattoo/piercing shops and the folks working their but Outer Limits far outshines all of them. Â
The BFF (since kindergarten hehe) came to visit from NY so we made our way to Outer Limits to get our second tattoos together to hold true to what's become somewhat of a tradition. Â Mikey was very patient and helpful when it came to catering to our desires despite the fact that they were close to closing time. Â The BFF and I were extremely pleased with our experience especially after being somewhat traumatized from getting our first tattoos together. Â Once both our pieces were finished, we decided to come back the next morning and get our third tattoos together. Â We came in with just very rough outlines of what we wanted and he took much of his time to perfect it to the picture we had in mind. Â
I am incredibly pleased with his work and hospitable nature. Â The shop is also incredibly clean which is a definite must. Â Even though it was a little bit on the pricey side, I'll be back for more and I think my boyfriend will be finishing up his sleeves with Mikey as well!
Last week I finished the nine week process that is my tattoo! I had three sessions of three hours to finish this masterpiece and I owe it all to Mikey Vigilante.
I was very nervous on my first visit. I did a lot of research and asked around to find the best tattoo artist in Long Beach for the job. I really liked Mikey, although his style isn't the Disney, cartoon-look I was going for. His colors were gorgeous and the reviews on Yelp were awesome. I went to Outer Limits and asked the kid behind the counter who he would recommended and showed him some images of the style I liked. He said Mikey would be the one and showed me the book of his work. Mikey wasn't there yet, so I made an appointment to come  back later that evening to meet with him.
Mikey made me feel instantly comfortable. He took pictures of my tattoo I wanted covered up, I showed him the print outs of the style I liked and went over the idea I had. He reiterated what I already knew, this wasn't his style, but he said he was excited to work on it and practice the cartoon technique. He went away for a few weeks on vacation, so I waited anxiously for his call.
When he got back, we met again to look at what he had drawn and for him to look at my current tattoo again. I made some suggestions and we tweaked it a bit, then set my first tattoo appointment for the following week.
Then, I got really excited! I couldn't wait.
The first session was really painful for me. I tried to be tough, but I hadn't had a tattoo in 10 years, so 3 hours of needles pushing ink in my arm was a little too much for me. Â Mikey made me feel so comfortable and was very sensitive. He didn't make me feel dumb or like a baby, he just agreed it was time to call it a night once it got to the point of tears :)
The second session, we hit our stride. I was really brave this time and actually told Mikey to keep going (even though I knew he was really tired!). Mikey had also made improvements to his "wiping style" by this second session and was a little more gentle than the first. This helped a LOT!
The third session was exciting because I knew it was the last! I was really happy that we were at the finish line. I ask for a few changes to the colors and Mikey was totally open to my requests and made it happen. Now it's done and so much better than I ever could have hoped. I am so proud of my new tattoo!
The bottom line is this: Mikey is an amazing artist, a good person and can make even the most nervous person feel right at home. Yes, he's also sexy. Everyone else I had the pleasure of spending time with while I was there (John Johnson, Justin Mendez, Tiffany, Shay) are all super nice and welcoming. Now go book an appointment and get tattooed.
I had my first tattoo at the tender age of 16'ish in this location way back when it was still Burt Grimm's, so I have a special fondness for the place.
The interior is nicely done as an homage to the long history of tattooing that has taken place over the years. But enough of the history lesson...
I here to sing the praises of Mikey Vigilante (insert angelic harps here).
I came across him completely by chance; my husband was getting some repair work done by another artist and I noticed Mikey had drawn up a Sugar Skull for another client. The piece was beautiful and had such a unique flair.
I spent some time looking at his portfolio and really loved his style. He answered all my questions and listened to all my ideas. He does not have the arrogance or indifferent attitude that plagues so many other tattoo artists...he is a genuinely nice, funny guy.
In April, we began work on a half sleeve and he is currently working on a full leg piece for my husband and we get tons of compliments on the work he has done.
This shop really is as good as it gets. Â It has a beautiful, spacious, open layout. It is sqeeky-clean, and all of the staff members are very friendly. Â I have been tattooed by several of the artists there, and all are very talented. Â The pricing is reasonable, considering the amazing value you are getting for your dollar - it's silly to pay less for inferior tattoo work somewhere else. Â Outer Limits in Long Beach is by far the best choice for your tattoo or piercing. Â I highly recommend them!
Review Source:Beautiful shop, spotless not dirty or grimy
really nice people
I'm extremely picky with tattoo artists, not only do you have to be amazing at what you do, we have to have good chemistry together.
I get my tattoos done by Tiffany, she's an amazing artist, reasonable with her prices and whenever she tattoos me i feel like we are hanging out rather than doing business
i wont go anywhere else for tattooing.
(After the last review that Mikey got, i feel like he owes this girl a drink lol )
I was prepared to write a very detailed review so i can give Mikey as much credit as i can since everybody loves the art he did on my arm BUT all i'm left to say is that the man rocks.
I went under close to 8 hours of ink in 3 separate days and i have no complaints, but what truly drove me to write this review was my very first meeting with Mikey. He sat down with me, listened carefully to all the different ideas of what i wanted done, then made a draft on my arm of what he pictured, based on what i was saying, and told me to come back in a couple of weeks. The result is awesome, to me at least. to everyone else that looks at it, its always the same comment: "your guy has a very well use of colors, i love how vivid and bright your tatt looks"
Thanks Mikey. if i give in to the pleasure again, i will be on your chair.
Had a great first tattoo experience there. Â Mikey was awesome, super patient and relaxed and make the entire process totally painless (well as much as a tattoo can be). Â Highly recommend this parlor, it's a wonderful place with a good bit of history too and has some of the best artists I've seen!
Review Source:I must say this is hands-down my favorite tattoo/piercing parlor. I haven't had any tattoos done (yet), but I've had 10 of my 16 piercings done there, and plan to go back for more.
Without saying too much, this place is extremely professional and clean, which are the most important aspects (in my opinion). They've made every piercing as painless as they possibly could be, and they've all healed wonderfully.
Although the prices may seem outrageous next to Swap Meet piercings, and others less experienced, you pay for quality, comfort, and cleanliness here. It's all worth it, especially if you're a piercing enthusiast.
Kent, John, and Justin (the apprentice), are and have been awesome in the year and a half-ish that I've been going there.
Highly recommended, even though parking sucks. I usually go on Friday or Saturday nights anyway (close to 9pm, so I don't pay as much at the meters).
Mikey Vigilante rocks my socks!
Living in Long Beach, of course I know about Outer Limits. Â My first experience there was June 13th, 2008 for my tragus piercing. Â It was a great experience.
For 2 years now I have been wanting to get a cherry blossom tattoo over my right shoulder. Â I've looked at hundreds of pictures but could never find anything really what I wanted - which is a good thing because I wanted it to be MINE.
My girlfriend and I went to the shop a week or so ago wanting tattoos - unfortunately they were booked at the moment and asked us to return later in the evening and that Mikey will be the artist. Â We took his card and I went home and researched his work. Â Fell in love with his style immediately.
We went back later on that evening but unfortunately went back later than expected as we weren't able to be seen (Friday night at 8 - they're a little busy). Â We called Outer Limits in Costa Mesa and were able to give them a heads up that we were coming so that at least my girlfriend can get her stars tattoo on the back of her neck. Â I, however, was patient and really wanted to have Mikey do my tat so I chatted with him briefly as he was pausing from another tattoo he was doing, we bumped elbows (didn't want to contaminate the person he was working on) and I quickly put down my deposit and made my appointment and counted the days down until Saturday the 16th.
...and then the day come. Â I bribed the 15 yr. old to babysit her 11 yr. old, I put on my sundress that would allow him to have access to my shoulder without exposing myself and trudged on down to the shop.
Mikey and I went over briefly what I was looking for (cherry blossom tattoo in watercolor style) and the location (up and over my right shoulder). Â He got everything all setup and then started the first phase of the drawings with one color sharpie. Â After that was approved we moved onto another color sharpie to bring out the tree branches. Â After that was approved he moved onto the final sharpie color bringing in the detail of the flowers.
Then...it began. Â It was wonderful. Â I was on such a tattoo high that I didn't even really realize the pain. LOL Â My girlfriend stopped by 1/2 hour into and stayed about an hour and chatted with me and then left. Then it was just Mikey and I chatting it up. Â He's a wonderfully soft-spoken man and extremely talented. Â Didn't hurt that I found him attractive, too...but, hey, that's because I'm a sucker for the talented. :-)
All is done and I absolutely am THRILLED with my tat. Â I've already received a few compliments from strangers and I haven't even had it 24 hours.
Absolutely recommend Outer Limits and Mikey and hope to go back to see him again soon for another tattoo - or perhaps I can convince him to have a drink. ;-)
Pics in my profile.
Mikey Vigilante is not only an amazing, thoughtful artist but a great guy who will do whatever it takes to provide you with the best tattoo experience. I have been to many tattoo shops in California, but I have never felt as comfortable and as much part of the process as I did with Mikey.
When I decided that I wanted a half sleeve, I wasn't sure where I was going to go. The parlor I had been going to told me that it would be at least a year before I could see them for a consult. I also decided that I wasn't just going to go anywhere, because if I'm paying that much for something that permanent on my body, I better be treated with respect and made to feel comfortable. So, I dropped in to check out the artist portfolios at Outer Limits in Long Beach. Initially, I was skeptical of Outer Limits because it is part of a chain. I'm not sure why that was a problem for me because it was a foolish idea. The artists who work in this shop are really dynamic and welcoming. For the first time, I had entered a shop where I was greeted in a friendly manner and the atmosphere was more eclectic than other shops. No speed metal, death metal, or thrash was blaring out of the speakers. It felt like anyone could walk into this shop and feel totally comfortable. In total, I spent 20 hours at this shop, and I really grew to like spending time there. It's also really awesome to be tattooed in such a historic place in Long Beach.
Then, I met Mikey. I came with several ideas that I wanted incorporated into the piece as a whole. Some of my ideas were not totally developed in my head, but as Mikey considered everything I told him, he worked with me to create something that would look best on my arm. It might've helped that I let Mikey have some freedom with how all of my ideas would come together, but he is also just that kind of guy. He isn't going to let you walk out of the shop with something you are not satisfied with. I remember the moment when I watched him freehand draw some of the ideas on paper in a rough draft and thinking that I would feel totally comfortable with him drawing on my arm.
My sessions were set up for every two weeks for five hours at a time on average, and he kept every single appointment. Mikey is eager to work and create. He will give you a quality tattoo that he has put plenty of thought into on his own.
On a personal note, if you are going to spend that much time and pain with someone, you should feel comfortable with them and almost like a good friend. We could talk about anything and everything, and during the times when I was ready to run out of the shop crying, I really appreciated the positive distraction and conversation he provided. This guy could probably be friends with anyone. Needless to say, on the day of my final appointment, I was actually bummed that it was going to be over, simply because it would be a while before my next appointment with Mikey. In fact, I almost scheduled a new tattoo appointment just so I could continue hanging out with Mikey.
It has almost been a week since my last appointment, and I am so pleased with the way my tattoo turned out. It is beautiful. He took my concept and made it so much better. I couldn't be happier about it. The color, lines, and overall organization of the tattoo is just exactly what I wanted. I really recommend Mikey for any tattoo you want. It was time, money, and blood well spent. Thanks, Mikey.
Tiffany,
You are absolutely amazing. Â Every step of the way, you had my back. Â I've been known to make impulsive decisions...
I'm not gonna lie because I totally would've gotten my tattoo on the spot during our consultation. Â Fortunately, for me, you were there. Â You advised me to think about what mattered most to me and wanted to help me find a tattoo that would be even MORE meaningful than I originally anticipated. Â
I couldn't sleep for a week straight because I was scared out of my mind, but as soon as I stepped through those doors, you put me at ease. Â Your calming personality helped me to survive my super excited, super hyper, super out of control personality during the ink process. Â
Just 2 hours later, I looked at my back and it was purely love at first sight. Â Wow. Â In fact, I think I'm still high on endorphins. Â Thanks, Tiff, for such an amazing job.
P.S. Â Thanks Waylon for the review. :)
the best tattoo parlor i've ever been in.
I've had 3 pieces done here. One by 6'6" trevor , great guy and 2 by my new favorite artist Tiffany. She's great, imaginative, patient, and oh so damn talented.
BIG THING for ink virgins... this is the shop for you. Some shops in sunset/seal/etc... won't even look at you if your not sleeved w/ a spider web on your elbow. not this place. they love newbies. they know you'll get hooked by both the inking and the service and be back again and again.
i reallyl can't say enough about this place. i really really recommened it. it's about 100-150 an hour. but people... THIS IS PERMANENT... and you get what you pay for. it's worth it.
hit up tiff. she's amazing.
-Waylon
oh and for you pierced/gauged mofo's they have a HUGE in house selection! have at it!!
Brian Ragusin is one amazing artist. Â
I went to him with an idea for a leg piece... Japanese style birds and cherry blossoms. Â He took my paintings I brought for examples, jotted down some of my requests, and a month later I go in to see a drawing that blew me away. Â
I wanted it to look like a piece of art, with brush strokes in the wings and blended colors like an oil painting. Â
My tattoo is beautiful (check it out for yourself in my pics). Â He really exceeded my expectations and gave me a piece that I love.
The staff is wonderful. Â All of the artists hired by Kari Barba are some of the greatest in So Cal, I would recommend any of them in a heartbeat. Â I really had a great time in my 12+ hours at the shop, joking around with people and having some good conversation. Â We even watched Night of the Living Dead 2 during one of my sittings.
I visited Outer Limits hoping to get my ears pierced. I walked into the pristine shop and was greeted by the nicest boy. (Tall, thin, sweet- I wish I knew his name- he was awesome and super helpful.) He escorted my boyfriend and me to the back of the shop and began the paperwork process. He patiently answered all of my jewelry questions and made sure we were taken care of before he went back to the front of the store.
And, oh, the piercing... If I could give Kent 10 stars, I would. He made the piercing process quick, (nearly) painless, and extremely enjoyable. His demeanor is very relaxed and immediately, I felt comfortable. Kent is very knowledgeable and very well spoken. He explains the piercing process and aftercare in great depth. The piercing itself was over so quickly and is healing fabulously. Kent is my favorite! Â
Should you decide to stop by Outer Limits, take a look at Kent's portfolio. If there are any questions in your mind, they will be silenced by the amazing photos of his clients. His work speaks for itself.
...And apparently, so do I...
I got my first non-earlobe piercing at Outer Limits (ear cartilage!) and it was an amazing experience. I was visibly nervous and could only think of "this is going to hurt", but Kurt told me to just breathe. It's amazing how one man can make a process that was infamously painful be fast and painless! And I can't stand pain (I tear up when people wash my hair at haircuts).
So happy I made my dream come true there at Outer Limits, my piercing is great and I can't wait to do another one! Cheap too, 25 dollars! I'm definitely doing one more.
The downside is the parking, but the remedy for it is to get your work done, then go to dinner. Voila, validation!
Some months ago I finally made the choice to get an old tattoo covered up and improved upon. Â Years ago I had known someone who had work done at the Outer Limits in Anaheim and loved their art, then Kari set up shop locally. Â A few friends had recommended I go there, but for a while I was apprehensive because I had heard the wait for Kari was forever, not to mention what the cost might be. Â I was also apprehensive because the work I was planning to get was personally important on a lot of levels and I wanted an artist who would work with me and not make me feel stupid when I walked in. Â On top of that, as a girl, I've found the male staff pleasant and polite, as well as extremely professional. Â Of the people I've interacted with that rock: Â Brian, Justin, Kevin, Trevor, Tiffany, and two more who's names escape me. Â Piercer's are cool even if you're not getting pierced.
So one day after work I walked on in to the shop where I spoke to this really nice guy about what I had in mind. Â He asked me if I had an artist in mind and I told him "not really." Â It was great because he encouraged me to take my time, sit and look through the books of all the artists' books to make a decision. Â I strolled through all of them, liked Kari's and one other artist a lot. Â After another review of the two books, I decided to go with Brian Ragusin, who happened to be the guy I initially spoke with. Â I really liked his style and felt that he could best capture exactly what I wanted. Â We took some time talking together to get a clear understanding of what I wanted. Â He invited me behind the counter, spoke really casually with me, offered feedback and suggestions and overall made me feel very welcomed to the shop.
I was a little worried about getting my sketch when I didn't hear from him for over a month and had already, eagerly, put down my $100 deposit. Â Finally the call came and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw what he came up with. Â It was (is) perfect. Â It had all the elements I wanted and more. Â I am currently in the process of working on this very tattoo and have been pleased both sessions.
Everyone in the shop is professional, approachable and friendly. Â During the first session, Brian even let me play my own IPod since the shop was pretty empty. Â Despite the desolation there on a Monday night, he has always put screens up to ensure my privacy while the work is being done. Â Last I knew they were working to get wi-fi for people to be able to use their computers... which comes in handy for that friend you ask to sit with you while you whine and moan. Â The shop is VERY clean and really nicely decorated. Â
I've been tattooed by three other artists at two different shops when I was much younger. Â Back then I didn't know what the process was like, what I wanted or how to look for it. Â All I knew was that I was intimidated, but not at Outer Limits. Â Make sure you have a clear understanding that the artists here are good and so, yeah, you're going to pay some high prices. Â It's all worth it to become a walking canvas though.
Beware of the crappy parking situation. Â All the surrounding streets are metered until 9pm or there is structured parking which can be expensive and doesn't close down until 12pm. Â I've paid $12 both times for about 3-4 hours in the parking structure, so I would say head there and then move your car to the meters after 9pm. Â The shop doesn't offer validation because they aren't recognized as part of the the Pike downtown... but that's a whole other story in its' self.
