I came here to get a coverup. The dude refused. He stated he can only give me something "black or dark blue" or nothing at all. Glad I didn't listen to him as there are far better artists than him. My boyfriend, unfortunately, got a coverup done by him. It was the simplest tattoo without any detail and he managed to screw it up. Pft. He even had the nerve to pump his own head prior to the session saying he's one of the best, his work is "rad" and that he refuses to do poor work. Sucks for my boyfriend. BEWARE!!!!!
Review Source:I really enjoyed my experience in getting my tattoo. Â I wasn't totally sure what I wanted. Â I just had some ideas floating around. Â Todd had me send him my ideas via email and the week before my appointment, he combined my ideas into one amazing tattoo. Â I even had to go back for a touch-up--FREE OF CHARGE. Â Again, great guy and nice, clean establishment!
Review Source:I refuse to go anywhere else! Todd, the owner, is my go to tattoo artist! My brother referred me here before he started his full sleeve. So I tagged along with my brother to see the sketch Todd had created. I was so impressed with his work that I decided that I'd schedule an appt as well for my second tattoo. I was able to tell him what I wanted and he worked his magic. It's a very large piece on my rib area and have had to come back for a few sessions.
Today I called Todd to schedule another appt. for another tattoo. He is always helpful and provided some suggestions and I look forward to meeting back up with him prior to my appt. in a couple weeks. Todd's appt. fill up quickly and getting in to see him may result in a little wait but I don't mind.
The shop is clean and all the artists are friendly and professional! I know people always look for cheap but I wouldn't risk cheap for quality of work that this shop provides. I want my artwork to last and be admired, which it has. I love my tattoos and look forward to my next piece!
Anyone who is looking for quality work from an experienced professional please consider Todd Heying, the owner of Aces High Tattoo. Â He is an extremely patient and diligent artist that approaches each piece as your own custom art that you will wear forever. On my first visit one of the things that stood out was him telling me that until we're both 100% certain that we have the sketch down, he will NOT attempt to tattoo. This built confidence and trust, making me realize his approach is an artists' opposed to someone trying to make a quick buck. Saying that I am happy with the results is an understatement. I would say stoked! I just started on my second piece from Todd and it already has exceeded my expectations.
As for the rest of the shop, I must add that everyone is approachable and the environment is extemely clean. You can tell they take sterilization very serious.
Good music, good company, great talented artists... can't go wrong!
I would love to say I was the proud owner of a tattoo from an artist from Aces High, unfortunately I went in on a Tuesday afternoon to look at each artists book and ask some questions and was basically ignored. There was a young man sitting behind the counter TOTALLY immersed in some video on the computer.....finally one of the artist (who was working on a client) came over to help me. He was very nice but obviously very busy. I think it would have been nice to get some work done there as I am a collector but alas.....they don't seem to be interested (BTW there were other artists not working that could of helped me)
Review Source:4.5 stars
I came here in September to get my first tattoo for my 25th bday. Because Todd wasn't available for several weeks, I decided to book with Keith. I brought in the font that I wanted & they were able to work with it. The day of I was extremely nervous... I asked Todd (because he is the Manager/owner) to show me how everything works & he was happy to do so. He was very thorough and super nice about everything. While getting my tat done, I was definitely shaking & asked if I could take a breather. Keith kept saying "I'm almost done" ... I was also a bit surprised that he didn't put down anything over his chair/workspace (like saran wrap or something), I dunno. I thought it was extremely painful, probably because I had it done on my side (ribs).
While my tat came out nicely, I wasn't 100% satisfied with the finished product after the healing process.
Although Keith had been my artist, I decided to get it touched up with Todd. Honestly, he was amazing. Literally night & day experience. While I'm sure Keith is a good artist, I just felt more at ease with Todd & felt a greater sense of rapport. Minimal pain, mainly just tried to keep still so he could go over my lettering.
Cost me $100, Tipped $20 or $25 each.
I have nothing but positive things to say about Todd. He even threw in some matchbooks, stickers and a t-shirt. If I do end up getting more ink done, he's the guy I'll be going to!!!
This place is pretty close to where I live, which makes it better! I got my rib tattoo here. All I wanted was script and I made an appointment in advance. I didn't really have any artist in mind, just someone who could do script because I already had exactly what I wanted in mind. It was a three word tattoo and took about 15 minutes to do the actual tattoo, 30 minutes for the whole visit. My appointment was at 6 pm and the artist had another customer, but they didn't show so he wanted to do mine first since it wouldn't take so long. He placed it exactly where I wanted, and exactly what I wanted. Granted, it doesn't take a genius to do EXACTLY what I wanted. I had the script printed out already. I was charged $100 dollars for the tattoo and I tipped $20. It was a pretty expensive tattoo, for what a short amount of time it was and not that much to do. I had the whole thing filled in, black and white so it wasn't that big of a deal. They did give me instructions on how to heal my tattoo and they do free touch-ups if I need it. Altogether the experience (for my first tattoo) was okay, I just wish it was a bit less expensive because I think that it was pretty expensive for the tattoo that I got.
Review Source:Was a little bit worried after reading the negative experiences, but...my 6th tattoo is a fact (since yesterday).
Very friendly, great service and normal prices. Also very clean while working. Nice and open atmosphere.
Also my husband got his tattoo here yesterday.
Our artist was Keith. Hard worker (it was after midnight when we left the shop !) and very friendly/helpful.
I would like to recommend the shop and artist.
went to Aces High spoke to Mike about getting tattoo w/Jay, Jay was unavailable. Mike said someone else could help me, I told him I didn't want anyone inexperienced to work on me, he assured me that everyone working there had at least 10yrs experience tattooing. I agreed to have Mike do the work with the understanding that he was a professional tattoo artist with a minimum of 10yrs experience. After the tattoo (on the back of my neck) & seeing the horrible work he did, I found out he didn't have 10yrs experience, he only had approximately 2yrs experience tattooing (if that). Being very upset I went to the owner Todd Heying & told him everything. Todd apologized, said he wanted to make it right. He offered to redo the tattoo himself, I didn't feel that would be the right move because I didn't want it to look like a cover up, I told him I wanted to get it removed with laser to at least lighten it up first because it was so dark. He agreed & said he wanted the customer (me) to be happy & that he would reimburse me the cost of removal. I went back to Todd multiple times after each tattoo removal session with receipts, before & after photos, and the estimated future costs for the multiple sessions needed to adequately lighten the tattoo. Todd asked me to give him another month because he needed to pay his taxes. A month later  I contacted Todd asking for the reimbursement & he refused, said that its not his responsibility that he only rents out the spaces to independent contractors and he was not responsible for what they say or do. They seemed nice at first but lie and go back on their word... I would NEVER let some one with hardly any experience tattoo on me... but they can just lie about their experience and get away with it... Very unhappy
Review Source:After years of trying to decide on what exactly i wanted to get for my first tattoo i finally decided on a theme that was meaningful to me and displayed something that I was in to. The problem now became of where the heck do i go to get this done. I asked my friend who has a lot of work done where he goes. He recommended me to "Big J" at Aces high.
Going in for the first time was a little nerve racking because i didn't know what to really expect. After talking to "Big J" for a few minutes my nerves went away and I felt comfortable with what he was explaining as far as what can transfer well from a photo/painting/drawing to a tattoo and what can not. I set up an appointment for a week later and the rest is really history.
I am on tattoo number 5 right now from "Big J", every piece has turned out amazing, honestly looking better than the drawing/photo i brought in to him. His creativity and color choices are phenomenal.
The shop itself is always clean and the atmosphere inside is relaxing and fun. The conversations between the guys that work there is light and makes me forget where i am at and makes me feel like i am shooting the shit with friends.
I would have to say that if you are looking to get some work done do yourself a favor and check out Aces High.
It's taken me 9 years to finally find a tattoo shop I can call my own, one I can recommend to friends and family. I finally found it!! Aces High is definitely my favorite tattoo shop. Not only is this place very clean, but it's also very friendly. I can even say I have a a favorite tattoo artist: Mike M. I know I can always count on him for advice and creative ideas for my tattoos. He's very good at making the time fly with his affable charm. I have recommended Aces High, and moreover Mike, to several friends and all have been equally satisfied with his work and personality. Do yourself a favor and check out Aces High.
Review Source:I just stopped by this place to ask if they did piercings and the guy I asked seemed really upset and offended I would ask such a thing at a tattoo parlor. I thought it was a normal question to ask, most tattoo places I've gone to always had a piercer working there.
The place looked small when I was in there and seemed okay. Just the attitude of the guy was a little off putting. This place is a block from Cal State Fullerton so I imagine they get a lot of college students getting their first tattoo here. Maybe a new college student will come in here get some nice kanji characters, or a chick will get a nice stamp on her lower back or maybe they'll be cool and get an outline of a star. No hate coming from me, I got an outline of a star on my arm too. :)
Came here to get my second tattoo. Â Tom who originally did my back tattoo was no longer there so I made an appointment with Jay due to the fact that I really felt comfortable (service, cleanliness and price) in their shop the first time.
Jay was very nice and did a wonderful job on my sister's and I's tattoo. Â They do take many smoke breaks but if thats what gives them a steady hand keep on taking them :). Â Will be back soon for additional art on my body. Â Thank you Jay!
Best tattoo shop in SoCal. I was in Anaheim for vacation and planned on getting a tattoo. I checked out a half dozen shops before I came to Aces High. I set up an appointment with Todd and since then have made the trip from Phoenix, AZ to Fullerton, CA 5 times to get more ink. Todd's work is well worth the 6 hour drive. I highly recommend Ace's High to anyone looking to get a tattoo. Everyone there is incredibly nice and willing to help you with any questions you might have.
Review Source:Hands down, one of the best tattoo shops in SoCal. Â I have been seeing Todd, the owner of this fine establishment, for about 10 years. To say that he is an amazing artist is an understatment. Â He is talented, patient, honest, kind, and makes you feel very comfortable which can be tricky! Â Since first getting worked on him, I have had close to 30 hours of work done by him and sent him countless referrals who have all gotten gorgeous large pieces. Â Not a day goes by (if my work is showing) that strangers dont stop me in the street to ask who did my work and I've heard countless times with mine and my friend's work that they are the prettiest tattoos they have ever seen.
All of the artists in the shop are great artists and have trained with Todd. Matt, Keith, and Big Jay are all quality artists. Todd can be booked out several months, but he is happy to have you stop by to chat about ideas etc anytime. Â We also love Mike the shop assistant and budding artist. He keeps the shop in tip top shape and free of bacteria :-) Â It is a great environment to hang out in, listen to great music, and play pool too.
DONT FORGET TO TIP YOUR ARTIST AND THE SHOP ASSISTANT!!
I got my first tattoo when I was 18, after I got an "ok" from my mom. Â She owns a salon and does permanent make up, which is pretty much tattooing people's faces, so she was very adamant that I find a place that is super clean and not cheap; you get what you pay for, after all.
I've been in a lot of tattoo shops, since one of my boyfriends in high school was covered in them, and I can honestly say that this place is THE cleanest one I've ever seen. Â And then you look through the portfolios and see the amazing artwork, and you're sold! Â
My first tattoo was supposed to be 4 parts, all of the symbols of Led Zeppelin as seen in many albums, namely IV or Zoso. Â I was nervous and started out with JPJ's trinity looking symbol and swore I'd finish the rest later...I have gotten more work done and have yet to do so! Â But that first experience was awesome-I got Big J. Â He has a light touch and is pretty funny and nice. Â When I went back for a large, intricate and complicated piece, I requested him again. Â It took me a couple weeks to get in, but he was worth the wait! Â My piece turned out amazing. Â I've never had another tattoo artist, but I'll never go to anyone else! Â I might go to Todd (Tom?) the owner, since I have friends who have had work done by him-he rocks as well!!! Â But my heart belongs to Big J. Â I mean, you never forget your first, right?
I got my first and only tattoo here a few weeks ago as a birthday gift. Â I was really nervous, and did not have an appointment. Â
The guys seemed really busy, but since my tattoo wasn't really big or complicated, Big J was going to take care of it quickly before his appointment. Â
Well anyway, he kind of seemed a little annoyed and I felt kind of bad. Â I got the girliest tattoo ever, a little black heart outline. Â He was very careful and made sure it was straight on my ankle where I wanted it. Â I liked that he seemed like a perfectionist because I am one as well. Â
Well I had a good experience here, and am already planning my next tattoo...something super girly of course. :)
The guy that helped me was super nice and helpful when i went in during the summer with my friends to get something small done. He set an appointment up for us for the next day with Big J. He tattooed me and my two friends and it was something really simple and small but after it healed we all realized that he wasn't very careful with it. the color was really light on the parts that needed to be filled in a bit and it looks messed up for my two friends especially.
I was really satisfied with the experience still and was about to go back 3-4 weeks ago to get 2 more done. I called in to see if they would take walk-ins and the guy said that they were booked and wrote down what i wanted to get and my name and number and said he would call me back if they had a time open up. I call back a few days later and he says im first on the list if they get an opening and how mine wouldnt take long so the would definitely give me a call. After almost a week i decided to just call gold rush and they took me right away.
also, btw Aces still hasn't called me back since then.
First of all, trust the other reviews about this place. Let's just say I was VERY satisfied with my tattoo - this is my 3rd. I didn't have an appointment either, just walked in - I got lucky b/c they are usually packed. When you first walk in they greet you. They weren't  BSing around, chopping it up, or just watching T.V., they were friendly, and conducted business professionally.
Mike got all the information and gave me a gist of how it was going to go. Then he handed it to a tattoo artist. Tom was available and I got him as my artist. Because I already had brought in a picture, he just had to just resize it. He made sure it was the correct size and also the Chinese characters were correct. He was very detail oriented and made sure everything was perfect. He even did extra work to transpose it because the design was facing the wrong way. He was patient and did not give attitude, he was calm and super nice. I am SOOOO glad I got Tom as my artist. He doesn't talk much, but he has a cool/gentle swagger to him - not to mention he man handled my leg which was great - such a turn on (beside the point). He wasn't like "could you please move this way or put your leg like this please" nope... he just grabbed my leg and was like "come HERE!!" OoOo HOT! :) haha I'm just saying.
Heads up - you are going to spend money, so don't expect to be spending $$ for something really nice. Mine was really detailed and had to be filled in a lot so i spent $$$ - but i must say it was worth it, he did an amazing job. Definitely going back to him and having him redue my other ones. I recommend Tom, he's quiet, but really nice. (esp b/c I am a female and walking into a tattoo shop is a little intimidating). He makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. I'm pretty sure the other guys are bomb ass artists as well, but I prefer him.
BTW - if you want to see my tat that Tom did... it is in my pictures.
I have been going to this shop for over 10 years and have invested thousands of dollars in this shop and referred many, many people to this spot all of whom have been extremely pleased with their work. I would never dream of going anywhere else and I even brave the hour long drive (without traffic) to get my work there. Apparently International Tattoo Art magazine also liked their work because they featured me in a 3 page spread a few years ago.
Full disclosure my ex-husband works here and despite our history I would refer anyone there in a heartbeat. I also adopted Matt's unexpected puppy (the quewtest widdle doggy in the whole wide world, yes she is!) and both him and his wife are fabulous, down to earth people. Todd Heying, my artist, is a stand up guy and someone I would trust with just about anything.
I already had a few tattoos the first time I went in and I was wearing clothes that covered all of them. They had no idea if I was a looky loo or what yet they treated me like a real human being and answered all my questions. I definitely cannot say this for other shops that seem to be too cool to give me the time of day. The guys here are the absolute epitome of professionalism which is hard to find in the tattoo world and even harder to find when artists are dealing with women. A special note to the ladies - all of the gents here are family guys and know how to treat a lady with respect. They will keep the jackassery to a minimum, at least until they get to know you. ;-)
Their pricing is about industry average at around $100 an hour and considering their work is far above average it is a great bargain. If you frequent the shop you may be able to negotiate a repeat offender discount. If you're new to the inked world you should know that with tattoos you tend to get what you pay for so good work ain't cheap and cheap work ain't good. Â If pricing is an issue for you, you should seriously rethink getting a tattoo since this is an investment in art that will be with you until you're worm food. You don't want to skimp on something that will be with you forever.
I can't speak for all the artists but Todd has an insanely long waitlist. Believe me, this is a testament to his work. If you're like the rest of So Cal and you want him to work on you, you will be waiting. Make your appointment asap. Todd also does amazing custom work. Just tell him what you have in mind and he'll be able to design something great. I usually give him a general idea of what I want and half the time what he draws wasn't exactly what I had in mind but it turns out much better because he knows what will translate on the skin. That's why he's the artist and not me. I should also point out that Todd's tattoos tend to be about 50% larger than what I had in mind. Now this could just be the relationship I have with him since he knows I'm not afraid to go big but don't be surprised if what he draws for you is much larger than what you first had in mind.
Another thing I like about the guys here is that they trust in their ability. If they don't think they're the right guys for what you want they will refer you to someone that will do the best work for your style. This just goes to show that they're not in this purely for the money but for the love of the craft. They really want you to have good work even if it means giving the business to someone else.
I've gotten two tattoos done here, one small and simple, and one large and detailed. My first experience here was pretty good, I was getting the Om symbol done on my foot, but hadnt done much research on the design beforehand. The artist who did my tattoo (whose name I cant remember, oops), was very helpful. He helped me look up the various types of Om designs and refrained from giving me his opinion or choosing one for me which was pretty cool. All in all a good experience, a little pricey for what I got.
I felt that my larger piece was a bit better in price, and was definitely done right (by the owner Todd). I gave him a few ideas and he free drew it out and asked for my input, then revised it as I suggested. Super professional and friendly! Didn't seem pretentious or snobby at all, and listened to what I had to say. The piece turned out awesome. Also, the shop manager was cool too, offering Starbucks (for free) everytime he had to make a trip for the artists. Pretty sweet.
Bottom line:
Good Artists
Negotiable Prices
Friendly and Professional Customer Service
Welcoming!
I have three tattoos, all of which were done at three different parlors because my first two experiences were unsatisfactory. Â However, I got my most recent work done at Aces High and really feel no need to go anywhere else because these guys are amazing. Â
They are genuinely patient, meticulously clean, and do amazing custom work. Â My subject matter was very specific-- two trapeze artists in tights and striped sleeveless shirts, catching each other effortlessly in the air as a circus crowd looks on-- and Tom executed perfectly. Â
For around 5 hours of work-- which included drawing the piece as well as tattooing it (black and grey) onto the massive space that is my inner bicep, the bill turned out to be $300 (not including tip), which is *amazing* for their quality of work. Â
Last time I checked, there was a 6-month waiting period for Todd (the owner, who is brilliant), but my heart belongs to Tom-- he is soft-spoken and does fantastic portrait work, and I believe his waiting period is just four months.
Me and my Sissy Patrol.. have been deciding on a place to get our celebratory tattoo's. We've had several people tell us about this place and Big J's awesome work.
Went about a month ago gave him a run down of what the 4 of us wanted and a $40 deposit. Because man does this boy's calendar  fill up fast! Saturday Nov. 22 - D-day! I went first, and had 'La Arana' placed on my foot, and we were on our way buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... 2hrs later HOLLAH - got my new tat and looking F-ing CLEAN! My other sissy's had theirs done and everything turned out awesome! Love Big J - his suggestions to alter what needed to be altered where precise and was totally patient with all us chicks taken up his whole afternoon.
The place is very very clean! Shop apprentice Mike (I think that was his name), has the place looking immaculate, and is on cue for anything the artists need. Walls are covered with possible images to get, majority are traditional but they're all very open to what ever your wee heart desires. There's 3 artists and each had a busy chair - all work was fricken great, attitudes funny as hell... hey they've got their salty nuts on point, and love chocolate covered raisins... and if you can.. offer Mikey some cash to swallow just about anything ;o)
In a  few months I'll definitely be back - got another 3 more to go!
Ok, your 18 years old. Driving around with your sister around Fullerton. So, yes you guessed it. We just came back from the Brea Mall, we're bored as hell, and she turned to me and chimed the word: tattoo. Not, "Hey, I'm going to get a tattoo" but "Hey do YOU want to get a tattoo. Oh, and I'll pay for it." So basically I was her guinea pig. Geez, thanks...jerk....=) But the thought of a free tattoo in my young impressionable mind sounded oh so coooool. So, I took her upon her offer. And since our lame asses didn't want to drive far, we headed to Ace's High next to Fullerton Jr College, which I was attending at the time.
Anyways, long story short. Great, patient and knowledgeable staff and tattoo artists. Very soothing touch. I barely felt a thing, really I didn't! Clean atmosphere, which is VERY important!!! And reasonable prices. I have two tats, and this is the one I'm actually keeping and I don't highly regret. So, there you go...sign of a good experience with permanent ink.
