Interesting shop. Have driven past it for years buy never went in. It's a nice ideal location in downtown by TRAX and the library.
I went there for my fifth tattoo since the artist I wanted at another shop was booked. It was Friday at 5:30 pm and I was a walk in. They had a few walk in artist and a few appointment artists. The shop was cool and clean. Had lots of art on the walks and several chairs and beds for people getting tattoos. A few shop guys wandering around and talking. I did fill out the form, but didn't get IDed.
The artist, CJ, was a nice relaxed guy. I showed him the moon I got and said I wanted a sun to match it's style. He came up with something real quick and we went to it. Spent twenty minutes trying not to move my foot and cursing and he was a champ, telling me all the stages as he was going. It was a little more pricey than I'm used to $100 min but it looks great now even three weeks later, don't need a touch up! Highly recommend!
Cathedral is amazing! All of the guys here are gentlemanly and the shop is very classy. They are always pleasant to their clients, whether they are regulars, are interested in a new tattoo, or are getting their first tattoo.
I just got my third tattoo there, all done by CJ. He's an amazing artist and an all around rad guy. He is genuinely passionate about tattoo history and technique. I trusted him to work his artistic magic for a cover up, and he delivered a piece beyond my expectations. I can't wait to let him add to it.
While getting tattooed, I've seen the other boys at work. They are all amazing artists and put their all into their art. I'd trust any of them to tattoo me.
This shop is easily the classiest, nicest and all around professional shop in Salt Lake City. This shop is super clean and the artists made me feel totally welcome. I went in for a small tattoo and even though all of the artists that day were booked solid, they managed to squeeze me in. They were polite and didn't seem put out in the least (even though he was staying late). Jake tattooed me but I would recommend anybody in this shop. I'll definitely be back.
Review Source:i was recently tattooed by michael. Â he did a great job and i was impressed with how quickly and methodically he knocked out my tattoo. Â the detail was great and the colors set up perfectly. Â i don't have experience with any other artists there but i would definitely recommend michael.
Review Source:I followed Jake Miller from Eleventh Street (his previous shop) to Cathedral when they opened it. I have collected an array of Jake Miller tattoos and absolutely love every one of them. I get compliments on my tattoos by Jake daily. Jake is a very professional, well rounded artist who has an uncanny ability to take an idea, expand on it, and really bring it to life. He takes tattooing very seriously and his knowledge of tattoo history, technique and, different tattoo styles are extremely impressive. The tattoos Jake makes are beautiful, clean, and will stand the test of time. Â I have been nothing but impressed with Jake as an artist and I have absolutely no hesitation sending any and everyone I know to Jake or any of the guys at Cathedral.
The shop is clean and the atmosphere is friendly. You feel like you've known the guys forever, they take the somewhat uncomfortable/painful situation of getting tattooed and make it an enjoyable experience. They are a group of really easy going guys that are fun to be around. I have been really impressed with their involvement in the community. They host art shows with works by local artist nearly every month. They have hosted benefits for charities as well as donating their time and talents to raise money for other charities. Cathedral tattoo is great and I will continue to get tattooed here for years to come.
If you haven't stumbled on it yet, check out the shop blog to get an idea of the talent in the shop: <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcathedraltattoo.tumblr.com%2F&s=af61a581ef34bf863261c30c482948f61c39f6584182a98bf3a32478b6dbb608" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://cathedraltattoo.t…</a>
EDIT: 7/13/12
I hate to edit my review but I feel obligated and think others should be aware.
When I first wrote my review, it was the day after I got it done and I was still high on the excitement of getting another tattoo. Unfortunately, about a day later I realized something went wrong. I noticed that the lines on my tattoo were not clear and thought maybe it was bruising. Turns out it was blowout. If you are not familiar with tattoo blowout I recommend a google search. It's a very bad thing that can happen during tattooing but something that can easily be avoided by a professional. I received my tattoo from Jake and before he got started he bragged about being fast. At the time I thought nothing of it but was surprised to see he got it done in about a third the time it should have taken. I now realize that being fast and zipping through the job is not something a real professional would brag about. It's also what led to the blowout. On top of the blowout there are patchy areas where the ink did not set in and I believe that to be associated with his speed as well. All in all, the tattoo was done poorly. I went back to discuss the tattoo but was unimpressed with our conversation. The blame was put on my skin being too thin in the tattoo area. Total horse $hit. Jake offered to do more work in an attempt to bury the blowout but I think it's unwise to go back to the same person who screwed it up to fix it.
I hate to write is review about someone and their work but I feel obligated to pass the word.
Your mileage may vary...
Cathedral Tattoo is the best! I went about a year ago for my second tattoo with a sketch I'd drawn up to give the artist (James Vincent, unfortunately he's moved to NYC and no longer works there) a general idea of what I wanted it to look like. James took my sketch and produced, in a few minutes, an amazing template that was exactly my design (which was very important to me) just improved upon in the details. There was some negative space in the middle that he recommended I choose something to fill, and after a few suggestions and minutes of deliberation, I decided on an eye. He added it in and I was SO happy with how it looked I was ready to get it on my body!
The tattoo itself took several hours which I did straight through, and the whole time James was very kind and friendly, we chatted a bit and he was sure to check periodically that I was doing OK. My tattoo turned out AMAZING, I love it, it has great personal significance to me, and I've had so many compliments on it.
A few weeks ago I went back to get it touched up- CJ Fishburn was my artist this time. When I called beforehand to make the appointment he asked me to describe my tattoo and immediately said, "Oh yeah, I remember that one," which made me feel good because they do so many per day I couldn't believe that someone who wasn't even my original artist cared enough to remember little old me. Everyone who works there really does care, they're so friendly it's just like chilling with old friends when you go in. The touchup was relatively quick, and on top of just touching up the original design CJ got my ok to change the way some of the lines looked and add some small detail to the eye which made it look even more incredible than before! They do touchups for free but I was so impressed with how great my tattoo looked and what an awesome dude CJ is that I left a nice tip... he deserved it 100%.
Cathedral is a clean, very professional place with top notch artists and great results. :]
My wife had been wanting a tattoo for years, but not pushed the issue. After seeing the place and hearing CJ on a PBS talk about tattoo history and the local tattoo culture I felt good about it. We came in after having some coffee next door. My wife talked about what she wanted. I thought they'd pull out the standard books and make suggestions. No. They said find pictures (not of tattoos) on the Internet and bring them in. She brought in 5 pictures covering what she wanted. It was a dragonfly. CJ went off for 15 minutes and came back with an amazing custom drawn template.
Everyone is really professional and classy. They really care about the history of tattoos and the art form. They did an amazing job. The price was less than I would have expected. There's some pictures attached to the review.
This place is awesome..
I wanted a half sleeve on my left arm to cover up an old tribal tattoo which I got 15 years ago. I had a few ideas of what I wanted but I wasn't set on any particular design so I let CJ get on with what he does best. The end result was so much better than I imagined so I am now slowly working on covering up the other arm.
I now live in LA and this is still the only place I will get tattooed, so it's good excuse for me to get back to SLC to see old friends and get a tattoo.
Everyone at the shop are really friendly and compared to great LA tattooists the prices are a bargain. I am planning another trip north as soon as it gets warmer up there.
Beautiful shop, professional setup, relaxed and happy vibe, plus honest and genuinely great guys who are both awesome tattooers and talented artists... what more can you ask for in a tattoo shop?!
And from what I know, these guys specialize in traditional and "Americana" styles of tattoos, but they will work with what you want and come up with the best tattoos for you. I also have a friend who recently had Jake cover up one of the tattoo he got a while back from someone else, and Jake worked with him, and helped put a beautiful owl over (on?) it... and it's one of my favorite tattoos right now.
Oh, and did I mention these guys are super nice and awesome? :D
