I have been getting tattoos at Dark Star for 7 or 8 years now. 5 in all. I see Sumer for my work and I am IN LOVE! I am scared of needles and have a low pain tolerance, but Sumer makes me feel tough :) She is an amazing cheerleader which makes the hours fly by!!!
She is down-to-earth, amazingly talented and so much fun to hang out. I will proudly display her work on my body for the rest of my life.
Her new shop, downtown is amazing! Clean, colorful and inviting. All of the people that I have talked to that work at Dark Star are super nice and helpful.
Highly recommend Dark Star
I have many tattoos. The last three tattoos have been done by Greg at Dark Star both in their old and new location. I simply cannot say enough good about the artistry, professionalism, communication skills and safety/sanitation steps that this shop has taken to completely satisfy me as a customer.
This place is the best!
Disclaimer: I did not have my tattoo done here. Please read below and you will find out why...
I went in and inquired about the price of a tattoo on my lower back. I didn't have an exact design in mind. It was just a spur of the moment kind of thing. I wanted to work with an artist to create a design I wanted and would enjoy to have on my body for the rest of my God given days.
I walked into Dark Star, and after a few minute wait, my boyfriend and I were helped by an artist. I told him that I had no other tattoos and no specific idea in mind and I wanted to create a design with my artist. At this point, the artist seemed a little perturbed. Maybe he doesn't get requests like this often? I told him roughly what I wanted and sketched out a crude drawing. It seemed like he couldn't care less since I hadn't put any money down. The picture looked alright, but the artist didn't seem genuinely interested in it or in me as a customer, so I was wary of choosing him. Then, I asked him how much it would cost. He said, at minimum, it would be $225. Additionally, depending on the time, it could go up to $300. That blew my mind since it was only a black tattoo, with no color and it wasn't very large, but at the same time I had absolutely no idea what a reasonable price would be.
Anyways, I set up an appointment to return later that evening. Later, as I was driving back, I noticed another shop. I decided to stop in and see how much he would charge. First off, he said the style that the other artist was going to use was very masculine and was typically not used on women. Additionally, he quoted me a flat rate of $125, no matter how long it took. Needless to say I was floored and I went with this artist.
Dark Star is very popular in Vancouver. I think when you get a tattoo done here, you partly paying for the name. However, I think the artist was taking advantage of my naivity. I felt he didn't care about how it would turn out or what I really wanted since the artist I went with said it was a very masculine design.
I'm very glad that I chose the artist I did. Now, I'm not saying that Dark Star doesn't tattoo amazing designs and provide quality work, because I looked at their work and it does look outstanding. I believe that if you walk in educated and firmly know how much you will pay and stick with that then you will be a satisfied customer. However, I feel I was duped and that is why I gave it a low rating.
I worked on a design for a tattoo for quite some time. I put a lot of thought in to the design as it was to reflect my Grandfather who had passed, and my two young sons I am raising on my own. I brought in my artwork for a consultation, then again for my appointment.
I was very clear in my explanation of the art. The tattoo "artist" said he clearly understood what it was I wanted. It was not a very complicated design at all. I am also a graphic designer for a living so it was a professional, clean, commercial print of what I wanted.
There was a stylized "A" and "D" in the middle of the design.
Not only did the "artist" color outside the lines like a 2nd grader on crack but he then connected the bottom part of the "A" making it look like an O.
No eye for detail, no thought or care about the fact that their customers will have this for life, Horrible service and a "Who cares?" type of attitude make Darkstar an awful choice for your tattoo!
You'd be better off paying someone on the street corner...at least they might look at what they're doing!!
