I called one day to see if I could come in ASAP to retouch a small star tattoo on my wrist, the girl had me come in one hour. (Totally happy to be able to get in quickly!) however I have been wanting to get something added to my wrist area. I met Stephanie there and I showed her a small little owl I wanted to make fit on my wrist. She took her time drawing out a picture I had and shrink it, she tried twice until it was to my satisfaction:) she was very helpful making sure it would look good and that the size and color was to my taste. Although it hurt like hell (to be expected) the tattoo came out spectacular!!! The fact that she took her time and never rushed me made me a happy customer:) the tattoo came out to my liking very much!!! And the price fair for the work she put in. I did my research prior to coming to this tattoo parlor and I chose this location based on its great reviews. I'm glad it proved right!!! Thanks guys!!
Review Source:This is the worst tattoo shop that I have ever experienced. I have several tattoos, but am new to the Chicago area, so I came to Deluxe Tattoo based on the reviews. I wouldn't give it any stars if that was an option.
I emailed with the owner, Ben, what I wanted done prior to coming in. I wanted this simple, symbolic drawing of a phoenix (I sent the actual drawing) and some words above it. He didn't have availability to see me soon (no big deal), so I asked to be referred to someone in his shop with good lettering. He forwarded his email to Stephanie, and she was going to be ready for me when I came in today.
When I got to the shop today, Stephanie showed me that she had taken the liberty to add shading and "girliness" to the phoenix. It actually made it look scarier and changed the presentation. I was a little annoyed as I was clear that I wanted what I sent. Then, she not only didn't have any lettering samples for me, but she was like "oh, you want the lettering, too?" That made me even more annoyed, because I had specifically asked for ideas about the lettering. Why would she focus on the part that I knew I wanted and complete ignore the other part of the tattoo? Once she started to provide her (unsolicited) opinion that it had to be bigger, I was done.
I found Stephanie to be standoffish, and I definitely was not comfortable trusting her to do work on my body. I decided to not get my tattoo with her, and asked to talk to Ben (the owner) as he has specifically recommended Stephanie to me for her competence.
Ben was argumentative and snide about the situation. Now, I am not a customer who normally complains, and I wasn't looking for handouts. I simply was looking for a little humility about the situation and some understanding as to why it was frustrating for me.
I took half of my Friday off and wasted $50 on a deposit for a place that doesn't pay attention to detail (i.e. read emails thoroughly) and has zero customer service.
I've had about 15 hours of work done at this shop and in that time have always been treated with kindness and respect. The prices are standard for the quality and I have at no time ever felt over charged. The work heals perfectly and the color lasts if taken care of. I have one piece that is two years old and people still ask me if its new due to the color.
At one point while getting tattooed the owner went on a drink run and asked if I would like a drink, that's respect for your customers, and something they remember. Thanks Ben.
Just got tattooed by Miles a few days ago and was very happy with what he did. I had a mess of ideas in my head and he was able to make a tattoo out of it. I expected to pay more but was happy with such a reasonable price. He is a quiet guy but very friendly and I was comfortable with him. I definitely found my tattoo guy and will be back in the near future for a cover up of a different tat and a portrait. Hopefully next time I won't be running down the highway in heels after a stray dog 20 minutes before my appointment!
Review Source:You have to appreciate an artist who refuses to do a stupid tattoo. I walked in here with a tattoo that I wanted covered up and a "super awesome" idea of getting a big black star over it. Zach Stuka thought it was a bad idea. The whole shop thought it was a bad idea. Sometimes, what you think is a great idea is actually a really bad idea.
Don't fight it. Be brave, take a deep breath, and trust your friendly tattoo artist to let them work their magic. A flower design was suggested and Zach drew it right on my leg and it was gorgeous. I went with it and I am so glad I did. I walked out with some spontaneous inspired artwork that doesn't look like a coverup rather than well, a big black star.
Have been a customer for the past few years.
Ben Wahhh has done all of my work.
I have always considered it an honor and privilege to get tattooed by him.
I would never get my work done anywhere else.
Great shop, great artists, great atmosphere!
I have never had a bad experience.
Each tattoo i get is better than the last!
Satisfaction 100% guaranteed!
One of my best friends led to me to this wonderful shop where everyone is pleasant, helpful, knowledgeable, and bad a$$ tattoo artists. I'm greeted every time I walk into the shop and they're excellent about keeping appointments. I went last night to have a tattoo done by the great BEN WAHH and he's killer. For years my friend told me to come here, but for some reason I thought the shop was out of my league since I'm not an experienced tattooee (I only have 3 other small ones). Ben Wahh made me feel comfortable, he gives great advice on tattoos in general, and the dude is super quick, efficient, and crazy talented.
GO TO THIS SHOP IF YOU'RE GOING TO GET A TATTOO!!!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!
Brought my wife in for her first tattoo on St. Pattys day 2012, Shop was clean. The girl who greeted us was friendly. But the artist Zach maybe not sure of the name this was over a year ago but he had a long straggly red beard and was a jerk. His work was ok at best. It was my wife's first tattoo she was a little nervous and the artist was real short and impatient, which seems to be a common complaint for this guy, and on top of his bad attitude then he refused to let me come back and sit with her while she was getting the work done. This wouldn't of been so upsetting if this so called "shop rule" would of applied to everybody but Other people getting work done had friends, spouses etc.. sitting around but the jerk (red head guy with long red scraggly beard) tattooing my wife wouldn't let me come back? Really dude WTF? We also got severally ripped off! We got charged $250. for a small anklet tattoo. Ridiculous! Now that we have been to other shops we now see how we where takin advantage of, miss treated and honestly ripped off we would of never paid so much knowing what we know now. Ex specially for the low quality of workmanship and artistry and complete lack of respect and customer service. Â
***I'd be more then happy to show anybody a example of a $120. tattoo from another shop that shows true skill and talent compared to the s@&t job that we got charged $250. for from deluxe. ***Just check out our profile for the comparison pics***!!!
Shout out to Adrian. He did a great job turning my mediocre tattoo into a much better looking piece. He was sure to make the drawing and placement exactly as I wanted it. I felt comfortable explaining my ideas and changes along the way. He was flexible and understanding when I suggested any changes to his work. He outperformed my expectations greatly.
Very highly recommended.
WOW! Â Had my first tattoo experience here at deluxe after hearing many good things from friends (with wide a lot of tattoo experience). Â Dustin was my artist, and could not have been more friendly, or comforting for a first-time tattoo. Â He got exactly what I wanted, and was very helpful in fleshing out my basic idea into a full piece of art. Â The service was very friendly, mellow, and laid back... very comforting. Â No one was snobby or stand-offish or whatever one might expect from a tattoo shop. Â I will be returning for sure, as I discussed the possibility of adding on to my tattoo and he was very open to hearing whatever ideas I had. Â Could not possibly have had a better experience and I highly recommend Deluxe, and definitely Dustin.
If your thinking about deluxe, DO IT!
Hannah = bomb. Very friendly and personable conversation. Not afraid to share her opinions on things to make the time pass with a lot more fun than the typical "so why are you getting this tattoo" or blasting music of the artists choice making your head hurt.
As far as her talent, it needs no explanation. Few even compare.
We will be back to see her for sure and it's our go to shop for Chicago.
I really couldn't be happier with the work that Kit Hall did for me in October of last year. She came highly recommended by a friend, and her professionalism and work absolutely lived up to that endorsement. I want to get two more pieces in the next year, and I won't go anywhere else!
Review Source:Jason Vaughn is the man. Â He did my first tattoo back in 2007 and now I'm gearing up for my second with him in February. Â YES, you have to book months in advance. Â YES, it's pricey. Â But let's be honest, is this a service that you want fast and cheap? Â I think not. Â Jason is an unbelievably talented artist, and his designs are SO original. Â He works in his own unique style, a kind of illustrative line drawing with incredible detail and superb color. Â It's unlike anything I've ever seen. Â Your tattoo with him will truly be one of a kind. Â I've lost count of how many strangers have stopped me on the street to comment on my half sleeve, and I cannot wait to do the other arm in a few months, the anticipation is killing me!!
Review Source:Kit Hall did a vidua bird (crazy South American bird with a very long tail) piece that runs down my bicep. Â I loved her attention to detail and care that she put into my session. Â She is very personable, walks you though the process step by step, works quickly and mindfully.
I highly recommend this artist and this studio.
Kit Hall has done my only two tattoos and has done a wonderful job! I am going back to her for more work when I decide what I want.
The place is clean and neat - the people are friendly and I did not feel silly for being over 40 and getting my first tattoo.
My son is getting work done by Kit now and she does really wonderful stuff! Her talent is probobly the most hidden gem in Chicago. I cannot say enough good things about her and my expierence there.
Check her out at Deluxe Tattoo.
Had some cover-up work done by Deluxe's owner Ben a coupe of weeks ago. Â He took a crappy kitchen job from my youth and covered it seamlessly with a professional piece of amazing quality and vibrant color. Â I'm getting compliments on it daily and from this point forward there's no reason to tell anyone it was a cover-up, because nobody would ever know unless I said something. Â Top quality work that healed as fast and painlessly as I've ever had a tattoo heal.
A word about shop personality, because it was refreshing: I'm no stranger to being tattooed, and in my time in the chair at Deluxe I saw both people like me and also absolute beginners come in. Â Both were treated with an easy-going respect and a light-hearted customer-service oriented attitude. Â The tattooist next to us even obliged one first-timer's request for a post-tattoo hug, although Ben informed me I would not be receiving that same level of service :(
Everyone here is a consummate professional, and if you get tattooed here you can rest assured you're being tattooed at one of the finest shops not only in Chicago, but in the United States.
I really didn't want to write this review, but I probably should.
First and foremost, only SOME of the artists are friendly to first-timers. Although the end of this review does not bode well for Jason L., I will say that he was nonjudgmental during the initial consultation. If you want a lot of "I'm awesome because I have tattoos and you don't" attitude, talk to Zach Stuka.
I had very large tattoo on my outer right hip done by Jason L. based on the recommendation of a friend.
I brought in a photoshop of my idea, and he translated into a workable piece.
3 hours of black outline went very well-- I loved it! If you want fine line work, he's great.
3 hours of color went... very badly. There were clearly some miscommunications, and I ended up with a LOT of pink instead of what should have been mostly purple. I was too physically torn up to try to fix it then and there, so we had to wait until it healed.
I came back to try to schedule a correction session about 8 months later when I had a chance. He seemed disinterested and unwilling to make any changes to the coloring, and I'm positive he was also high. I scheduled a correction session, but was completely dreading it.
That is not acceptable.
I ended up having my tattoo corrected at Insight Studios by Ryan F., and I love it now.
I recommend skipping Deluxe and heading to Insight first.
I definitely should have done that.
My experience at Deluxe Tattoo was very pleasant! Considering I was getting my first tattoo, I did not know what to expect beyond very standard protocol. However, Deluxe made me feel very comfortable.
I chose Deluxe mostly based on positive reviews. Also, it seemed a little cleaner than several tattoo shops I had visited in Wicker Park.
Overall, I really enjoyed working with Kit. At the consultation, we clarified what I wanted my tattoo to look like and set up an official appointment. According to tattoo-ed friends, I was given a very reasonable estimate too. After finalizing the details of the tattoo via email, she came up with a design that I instantly fell in love with!
Despite being somewhat nervous, Kit guided me through the tattoo process. Five stars for taking the time to adjust the size of the design! Initially, the sketch was slightly too large for my rib cage. Kit scaled down the image several times and allowed me to find an adjusted size that was just right. Twenty minutes and one lollipop later, I had a neuron etched into the side of my body! It looked simple and clean. I was very proud to have this work of art on my body!
Very clean, accommodating, and professional!
"Deluxe" is a word referring to something luxurious, or superior, and I couldn't think of a more appropriate name for this North side, No-Nonsense house of art and awesomeness. Â
Three years ago, my friend Jim got a sleeve done by Miles. It was some of the best work I'd seen for sure, and thought I'd like to get some of that awesome sauce for myself. I called in for an appointment, and luckily, he had a cancellation, so I came in for a consultation the next day. Â
Miles is a soft-spoken, super nice guy, who is humble about his incredible talent, and easy to work with when planning out your piece. Â I brought in some reference material, and we had a chat. Â I came back the next morning, and the drawing Miles had done blew me away. Â The piece would be a 3/4 sleeve based on a Greek Myth, with dragons, and golden apples and all sorts of wonderful stuff. Â
Since this piece, I've had two other friends go to Miles for a back piece/coverup, shoulder/bicep piece, and another partial sleeve. Â
I've moved to Las Vegas, and have been tattooed a bunch of times out here. Â Every single tattoo shop I walk into, an artist asks me who did my sleeve, and offers big compliments. Â
As far as the shop goes, it's clean with lots of stuff on the walls to look at. Â If you're going to be sitting in a chair for 20-30 hours, trust me when I say that a badass Dorian Grey painting on the wall is a godsend, and enough to keep your mind entertained.
The other artists there are also way legit, and their work stands out against even the most highly awarded tattooists out there.
Truly excellent shop. My wife and I have both had work done by Kit Hall on separate occasions and we couldn't be happier.
Very professional, friendly and laidback atmosphere. Spotlessly clean as well. The location could be better since parking is a pain, but it's Chicago, what do you expect? Definitely worth it.
Pricing was a bit higher than average but given the quality of the work, I can't complain. I'd rather pay more for better quality than make compromises.
Like any shop, you should get a feel for the artists and their portfolios, then call ahead to set up an appointment. I saw a couple of walk-ins while waiting for my art to be sketched and they were able to accommodate them, but it's just better to schedule it ahead of time, especially at a busy shop like this one.
I'll definitely be back here when I'm in Chicago at some point in the not-too-distant future.
Amazing. Â Zach is a truly talented artist. Â So thank you to him.
If you aren't accustomed to perverted sense of humors, then this place will come off as a bit crude... But I think that sort of builds on to the character of this particular shop.
I discovered this place by accident. Â I needed a cover upon my arm, badly. Â I originally went to The Chicago Tattooing & Piercing shop over on Belmont and discussed with an artist what I wanted, etc. and set up my appointment!
When I arrived at my scheduled appointment the artist came up to the front desk and said "I sent you an e-mail last night explaining that I wouldn't be able to do your cover up. Â It's just not my particular style to do those kind of things." Â It blew my mind. Â YOU E-MAILED ME???? THE NIGHT BEFORE???? What a waste. If you are a tattoo artist, you should be familiar with a variety of styles, not just one.. and what the hell does that have to do with a cover up? Â Ugh... So thankfully he gave me my deposit back. Â The only good thing that came out of this mishap was his recommendation of Deluxe.
I came in to this shop right after this incident happened and although I had to make an appointment farrr in the future, it was well worth it. Â
At my first appointment he did the basic outline and a bit of shading. Â At my second appointment a couple months later he completed it. Â I have other tattoos, but this is by far my favorite. Â You can't even tell it's a cover up, which the previous artist said was nearly impossible for him to accomplish. Â (YEAH RIGHT!)
People are constantly complimenting it and I will certainly come back when I am ready for more! Â Of course they're a bit pricey, but I learned the hard way that cheap tattoos are, well.. CHEAP! Â The shading, outlining, and design as a whole is amazing. Â Near perfect! Â I uploaded 2 photos of it, so you can check it out for yourself.
Also they play good music. Especially if you're into Ministry, and other bands of the like.
I highly recommend Zach, but I'm sure the others are super talented as well.
I had two tattoos done by Dustin back in January. I walked in without any appointment not knowing what to expect. Deluxe Tattoo came highly recommended to be my friends in the area so I figured why the hell not!
Dustin put me totally at ease and did his best to make me as comfortable as possible. My tattoos were on either side of my rib cage and Dustin took his time to resize them and move the placement a couple times until I was completely satisfied with what I was about to get done.
I would go back in a heartbeat and am super happy with my pieces!
Weeeeee!
I had a tattoo done by Zach. The space was clean and comfortable, and Zach was really comforting and willing to meet me before the actual tattoo just to talk about what I wanted.
After a lot of researching, I'm glad I decided on Deluxe, and specifically, Zach. I'd go back in a heartbeat, if I could decide what I wanted next.
Hands down the best tattoo shop in Chicago!!! Â Clean and comfortable space with good music pumping. Â Deluxe has artists that are talented, helpful and spend the time to tell you what they think will work well and what won't. Â Whether you are fixing bad work from the past (from some other shop) or getting a new piece this is the place to go!
Also there is always parking right on Irving park rd which makes it xtra convenient
So nice I liked it twice!
Went in on a friday evening and was so impressed, I came back less than a week later. Â These guys are all pros and will definitely take care of you. Â Ben W. kept me entertained while tattooing my [awfully painful] elbow and then called me a few days later to let me know that guest tattooer Ashley (from twelve28 studios in Brooklyn; scope it if you're out in NY) had a last minute cancelation and "would I like to fill the spot?" Uhhh yes please.
Both pieces are welcome and awesome additions to my arm and I will be coming back here again and again. Â Don't look any further than Deluxe if you want the best in Chicago!
Just another happy Yelper walking away from an amazing session at Deluxe. I've had a couple of bad experiences with tattoos, but I'm happy to say that I think I've finally found my go-to place and go-to artist. I was originally debating between Deluxe and another popular tattoo parlor in Chicago. However, unlike the other place, the people at Deluxe were responsive and prompt about scheduling. (The other place basically lost me as a customer because they never called me back after needing to go consult their schedule book.) I called on a Friday, went in on Saturday so they could get an outline of the old tattoo I wanted to cover up, and got an appointment on Sunday. The premises were clean and well-lit, and everyone was professional and attentive.
My tattoo artist was Dustin, who told me that he has 19 years of experience. He truly is so talented. Even though his online portfolio consists of mostly traditional-style tattoos, I wouldn't pigeonhole him in that category. He did an incredible job with the first tattoo, which was based off a traditional Chinese-style brush painting. In the same session I also got another tattoo on my ribs. He was humorous, patient, and friendly, but not overly chatty, which I actually prefer since I'm not able to carry on much conversation through my teeth which are always gritted in pain! He was able to power through both of two tattoos in just about an hour -- absolutely amazing! I can't wait to decide on another design to get just to come back here.
Will post pictures when the tats are healed up!

Update: If you are reading this, Dustin, THANK YOU! I've gotten countless compliments on my tattoo and I'm so incredibly proud to be showing it off.
5 Stars for Kit Hall!! As a Chicago expat, I've been wanting to get a little hometown pride tattooed on my arm for a while. While I was home recently I contacted Kit after taking a look at her portfolio online. Â I told her that I wanted a Chicago flag on my forearm, she said she'd come up with a design based on my request and set me up with an appointment. I was able to make an appointment with her that same week.
When I arrived on the day of my appointment, the front desk staff was super friendly and the whole vibe was pretty chill (weekday afternoon). Kit brought out the most amazing drawing! Instead of a wimpy, sad, simple flag she came up with an amazing concept! Within 90 minutes I walked out of there with a 3" x 4" full-color tattoo, and it was pretty inexpensive! Mind you, inexpensive but not cheap quality. Her line work was amazing, the shading and different tones of colors are unbelievable! You can see a picture of the fresh ink here:
http://www.kithalltattoo…
Kit was great, she took time to explain sizing issues, the elements of the design and was open to questions and suggestions. She also wasn't too chatty, which I like since I have a hard time focusing on conversation when in physical pain. Her work is so great that I referred a total stranger to her after they saw my tattoo and I'm sending my brother her way too. I'm so glad I decided to look her up and that I finally have my bad-ass Chi-city pride tattoo!
Tim B. did my right shoulder here (I think they're pictures 30 and 31 for Deluxe, take a look for yourself). Â Extremely professional work, and clearly some of the most talented tattoo artists in Chicago, if not the country. Â
I've heard some people say that Deluxe is expensive, but to be honest, if I'm paying somebody to permanently alter my body, I'm willing to pay the price for quality. Â You should, too.
First word of advice: don't get an impulsive tattoo after a beer-soaked visit to a Chicago ballpark (as though you needed to be told. common sense escapes us when we are buzzed and excitable).
Second word of advice: if you do, get it covered up.
I know some artists are not exactly thrilled to be fixing someone else's work, but if Chris Smith is one of them, I wouldn't have known it.
He drew up something to my liking when I gave him suggestions of what I would like. He was honest with me about what wouldn't work.
It took two sittings, one of 2 1/2 hrs and one of 1 1/2 hours to get it all done. Chris was really friendly and made me laugh despite the pain.
I'm very happy with how it turned out.
I just actually went in with a friend to get a touch up done by Kit Hall. She did an excellent job as well. It looks 100x better than it did.
Overall Deluxe staff are professional and friendly, and most importantly, they do great work. I'll be back eventually!
Deluxe in short: kind, professional, patient, talented, affordable. Â As good as it gets! Â
I've seen two tattoo artists at Deluxe: Â Zach Stuka and Kit Hall. Â In January, I wanted to get my second tattoo with no notice; I wanted it done that day. I went to Deluxe after reading their reviews, and Zach completed my celtic cross for me in no time. Â It's very simple and looks great. Â Thanks Zach! Â He's cute, too. Â =)
I went back the following week to have a larger piece done on my back, and I wanted a woman to do it. Â Kit Hall met with me, and over the following week, we sent each other images of what we thought might be good. Â Kit recommended some things that I wasn't sure about, but I decided to trust her expertise. Â It was a GREAT decision! Â It's exactly what I want.
I had my tattoo finished yesterday, and it looks absolutely incredible. Â Kit also used vegan ink (hooray for vegans), which also added meaning to my tattoo. Â It's about 9" x 12" with over 10 colors, and took two sessions totaling over 4 hours. Â Kit charged me only $350. Â I would have paid much more for the same outcome. Â Thank you, Kit!
I went into Deluxe with hopes of adding to a lonely phoenix on my upper arm. Â I didn't know exactly what I wanted, Â I just knew I wanted something to compliment what I already had. Â After talking with Dustin for a bit, I decided we were on the same page and he was going to draw up some background images consistent with the style of my original tattoo.
He knocked the damn ball out of the park! Â When he drew out what he was thinking on my arm, I couldn't have imagined it better. Â After doing all of the outlining and shading, I really couldn't believe how incredible it turned out. Â I honestly feel like I have a killer piece of art permanently fixed to my skin. Â I can't wait to go back and get the color finished!
The shop itself is squeaky clean from the restroom, waiting area, tattoo areas, hell even the floors were spotless. Â Everyone who worked there was really cool and answered all of the questions I could throw at them. Â Deluxe definitely doesn't have that "cooler than you" aura about them, everyone is down to earth and pretty rad. Â Prices are super reasonable, especially considering the quality of the work and the cleanliness of the shop.
Deluxe Tattoo has to be the best tattoo parlor in Chicago -- hands down. I've had nothing but the best experiences here, and so many of my friends have also been tattooed here, and cannot recommend it highly enough. Their artists are insanely talented, but down-to-earth and SO nice.
It took me FOREVER to find an artist that I liked enough to want their artwork on my skin permanently. Finally, I found Jason Vaughn and fell in love with his work. He has done both of my huge upper arm/shoulder tattoos and I get compliments on them all the time. As an artist myself and having some OCD tendencies (so I tend to be very nitpicky...), I never thought I could just explain a vague idea of what I wanted and have someone else translate it to skin so perfectly, but Jason did it! I am constantly floored by how talented he is. The best part is that even with the high-quality, fine-detailed tattoos he does, Jason is amazingly FAST. I don't know about you, but I FREAKING HATE getting tattooed. So the faster it can be done with, the better, and Jason delivers!
Everyone else in the shop is awesome as well. I love talking to them when I am taking a quick break from being tattooed. They're always really friendly and easy to talk to. Actually, when I was getting my first tattoo done, Hannah Aitchison (from LA Ink) was in the shop and said it looked cool. I was totally like, "Thaaaanks...! *GLITTERY EYES*" Yes, I am a nerd like that. :P
I don't have that much experience with tattoo places. My last one I went to was in Toronto and it took 45 minutes. I would suggest going to Deluxe if you're a relative newbie because they're very professional and open. They even greet you as you walk in. Reading reviews of other places, which I will not name, I get the impression that many artists are cocky and arrogant.
I went to Deluxe for a consult with Miles because I wanted a dragon tattooed on my left arm. His custom design was fantastic and I loved it right away. It pretty big and because I'm a wuss I decided to get it done an hour at a time. It's not even half way done after my second visit, but so far it looks great.
Miles was very professional and meticulous. It took a while to get the stencil right for the outline, but it's better to get it right than screw it up and have a crippled looking dragon tattoo. He spends a lot of time cleaning and sterilizing, which is great. I don't want hepatitis.
It will probably take almost a year and a chunk of money to get this one finished, but it's so worth it if it's beautiful and you're going to carry it around for the rest of your life.
I was visiting family in Chicago and I knew I wanted a particular odd tattoo. We found Deluxe on our way around the city and stopped in. I was immediately greeted.
They had an immediate opening and the price for my Totoro tattoo was very reasonable. This was Jason's first Totoro work and I was anxious to see what he could do.
He did very detailed work and captured every little detail about my King Totoro. This anime character is easy to screw up, there are fine lines and very small details that complete his magical essence, and Jason was able to deliver.
Highly recommended if you're in the Chicago area. Clean, comfortable, and the background music is ever so relaxing.
In the last ten years of getting tattooed, I have never been as satisfied with my work as I have since I started visiting Deluxe in the last year.
Jason Longtin has done such a ridiculously amazing job with the different challenges I've presented and I believe I managed to hit a few categories. First I came with just an idea, had him draw it up and tattoo that day. Next I had a vintage postcard illustration that was so gorgeously done that last monday Jason covered up/redid the illustration on my other arm with such patience and focus that blew me away.
I've been more then a little impressed, if you couldn't tell.
Come in and make your appointment, every person there seems to be quite talented and you won't be disappointed.
I just wanted to add my voice to all of these glowing reviews... I got my very first tattoo at Deluxe this week and it was an awesome experience. The place is comfortable, not too flashy or intimidating. They worked me in on pretty short notice and were really nice about it.
Chris Smith is the artist who did my tattoo - and he was seriously fantastic to work with. He is friendly, professional, gifted, and very patient. I was nervous but his calm demeanor totally made me feel relaxed and good about what I was doing. My tattoo is EXACTLY what I wanted. My friend who came for moral support said if she ever gets another she wants it to be by Chris. He was memorably terrific - both talented and personable.
Thanks so much for a wonderful memory and all-around enjoyable time! This is the kind of thing that could be terrible so I really appreciate how positive my experience was. Not sure yet when tattoo #2 might be in my future, but it will definitely be at Deluxe.
This was my first tattoo, so I'm pretty biased. But maybe this will be helpful to other newbies...
So. One day this spring, I got up the nerve to get a tattoo I've been wanting for years. I'd heard great things about Deluxe, and boy, I wasn't let down. I showed up without an appointment, and these guys handled me in stride.
I was placed with Zach Stuka, who is something of a wizard in terms of tattoos. What I was asking for (cello f-holes on my back) was way too easy for someone like him, but he still did an amazing job sizing and placing the stencils. Especially now that I see pictures of my tattoo, I am so glad that I went with these guys! Everything about it - the shape, size, positioning - was perfect. Zach spent a lot of time making sure it was exactly what I wanted, which was great. I even feel kind of bad that it must have been a really boring tattoo for him to have done - looking at his artwork, I know he could have done much more complicated, beautiful work...
When it came to the actual tattooing - I wasn't prepared for how painful it would be. Zach respected my space and let me read a book through the first half of my tattoo. But when we took a break mid-way, we started talking, which was exactly what I needed to get through the second half of the tattoo. It felt like it lasted about a quarter of the time the first one took. So any tattoo newbies out there - make sure you go to someone who will keep you engaged! It'll feel so much better.
And oh boy, the after-care. My best friend told me that Zach's after-care advice was all wrong. She had nearly the same f-hole tattoos as I did, and told me that I would be suffering from healing tattoos on my back for at least a month an a half. Â I chose to follow Zach's after-care advice, and I swear, my tattoo was healed within a week. It still looks great months after the fact, too! I'm so glad I listened to these guys.
For excellent customer service, willingness to spend whatever time it took to get my tattoo right, friendliness, careful quality work - this place deserves an A+.
ATTENTION: This is a review from a total tattoo newbie...so there might be some bias.
My friend recommended Deluxe Tattoo to me after having a great experience with its owner, Ben Wahh. Â I sent him an e-mail for a friend and I, showing him what we wanted to get done and which tattoo artist he'd suggest. Â He directed us to Kit Hall, who was FANTASTIC.
She contacted us as soon as she could and started talking about our designs. Â His was very specific whereas mine was still up in the air. Â We set our appointments to 3 weeks from the day of our call and just waited it out.
The day of our appointment, we got there a little bit early--around 11:30 AM and started talking to her right away. Â The shop has a very cool vibe with no feelings of pretentiousness, everyone just seemed super chill. Â No judgment--my favorite.
She came and talked to both of us and showed her a drawing she had worked up for mine, and I liked it, but wanted to integrate a little bit more to it. Â She listened to my needs, made a few suggestions regarding size, etc. (this is my first tattoo) and gave me some time to think about exactly what I wanted while she worked on my friend.
After working on my friend, she redrew a design for me and I LOVED it. Â She was really set on making my tattoo customized as opposed to the original photos I sent her, and it certainly was. Â Since it was my first tattoo (and I was getting it on my ribs/side), I was yelling obscenities for the first 15-20 minutes. Â Yes, I'm a wuss. Â But she let me yell, and ended up getting me to relax throughout the rest of the hour.
The tattoo turned out really great and she even took a picture to add to her portfolio! Â You know it turned out well when...
She made it a point to explain aftercare instructions and answer all of our questions--really knew what she was doing and made it a point to provide a great service. Â I would definitely come back for any tattoos I get in the future and recommend this place to friends.
My only tip is that you make an appointment if it's on something you really want. Â Walk-ins are fine, but don't expect to get in whenever you want to. Â Depending on the artist and the timing, you may not get anything. Â My friend had to wait 2 months to get hers done from Ben...but it's worth it!
The shop is bright and clean and the open layout is really nice - you get the feeling that everybody there really enjoys where they are and what they're doing (nothing worse than getting tattoo'd by a cranky artist).
Zach was super friendly and very patient with me (I tend to let the needles get to me) and did an AMAZING job. Â Totally cannot wait to go back.
I love this place. I've seen four of the artists here, but the piece I'm currently working on is being done by Zach Stuka and I couldn't be happier. I started what was just going to be a single tattoo on my arm, a peacock in honor of my mother's favorite animal. I brought my ideas in, and Zach was the first to greet me, so I went with it. Not only did his sketches exceed my expectations, but I even went back after finishing it to add more and turn the piece into a half sleeve. It's still in progress, but it is turning out to be one of the most beautiful pieces of work I've ever seen.
As for all the reviews about the "attitude", I disagree. I'd rather honesty and real life humor than fake smiles and even faker courtesy. Deluxe is the place to go if you're looking for geunine art by even more genuine people.
It's a bit unfair to give a shop 5 stars based on my experience with one artist, but...
Jason Vaughn is a great artist who has done extensive work on me, and I plan on going back soon. Whenever anyone asks me where they should go for tattoos in this city, I recommend Deluxe. Â
The layout is quite open, which allows for banter between artists - i've been to shops that are more closed off for each artist, which means you kind of have to fend for yourself (i'm not much of a talker while getting tatooed). It's a welcome reprieve, especially with some of the characters in there.
Be prepared to wait, as with most tattoo shops, if you need a consultation or to even book an appointment. I respect the artist's time, and am pretty flexible myself, but not everyone is like that. Â Just an FYI in general. Â Jason books months in advance, which is frustrating but worth the wait.
They also take cards, which is unique, although i don't recommend paying for tattoos in credit cards (cash is king baby). Â Walk-ins are allowed, but again, you should probably at least call ahead to see if it's worth the trek.
I usually find parking on the other side of ashland and walk east, it's pretty easy. but beware during the summer, some of the streets around there are Cubs-regulated signs.
I was down since I didn't get the gold stamp of Yelp Elite (alas if there was Yelp Nerd Herd, I'd be in there like swimwear) and to drive my rejection from my mind, made a wager with some of my gambling cronies. Lost my bet and they said there be one way to work off my debt.
Not that, dirty reader, but to do something something remotely embarrassing like get a silly tattoo or wear pants. Naturally, I chose the first. I haven't owned pants for many years and am a badass, thus the prospect pleased.
We had an appointment at Deluxe Tattoo. I met my artist and she was remarkably kind and patient. I asked for a tat on my lower back of a skull and cross bones with a halo above it. She looked up Chris Breezy's online, enlarged it, and combined that with her artistic rendering, for something befitting a feminine style and anatomy. Me likee.
She explained the process and got to work. I must admit it hurt, even for someone made of win, but I cowboyed up, and she was very gentle and did her best to make me comfortable. It went fast for the size (5 inches by 3 inches?) and shading entailed for the work. PICS Posted in my pic gallery.
She was so friendly and patient when working on the drawing, explaining things and answering questions, and when I winced during the process. It went great! I appreciated her professionalism and artistic talent. I highly recommend Deluxe Tattoo; not so sure they'd recommend me as a customer!
No gold stamp from Yelp. Beautiful Tramp Stamp from Deluxe Tattoo. The wheel in the sky keeps on turning.
I chose Deluxe after asking around and doing my own internet investigations. Â After I emailed the shop with a picture of the inspiration for my new tattoo and a few details about what I wanted someone responded right away and recommended two of their artists to preview their portfolios and chose. I decided to go with Jason Vaughn. Â
Jason too, responded immediately to the personal email I sent him. It took me over a month to get an appointment. However, I viewed that as a good sign. Because of the professionalism of the shop, I felt comfortable allowing the artist to use the art I provided as inspiration...not an exact guideline.
The work came out beautifully and would recommend Deluxe to anyone looking for real artists doing professional work.
There's a reason there are so many 5 star reviews for this place. Â They rock!
I'm currently working on a piece for my back (not the entire back but darn near enough!) with Hannah and I really couldn't be happier with her or the shop. Â Most people who know even the slightest bit about tattooing know Hannah from LA Ink. Â I was a little nervous that she would be snobby or full of herself but she is soooo not! Â She's very chill and laid back and got a kick out of creating my tattoo. Â It was a custom design that she made out of some vague ramblings I gave her via email. Â It is going to kick serious butt when it's finished.
The shop itself is really cool. Â It's not fancy but it's clean and friendly. Â Ben Wahhh was there and he's a really cool guy. Â I made sure to peek around at what everyone was working on and ALL of the work was amazing. Â There was a black and grey of Stevie Ray Vaughn that looked like a freaking photograph. Â
The artists here all range in prices. Â I'm assuming Hannah and Ben are the most expensive but I think I overheard someone say they charge $100-150/hour. Â And that guy was putting out some kick-ass work.
While I *think* this large piece is my last for awhile, I suspect that mindset won't last long and I'll be back again. Â I can say with 100% certainty that it will only be at Deluxe!
Surprise, surprise... another five star review for Deluxe Tattoo..
Not that my input is really needed when it is clear that the consensus is this place rocks, but I will say that it is very different from any other tattoo studio/shop/parlor.. or whatever you deem correct.. that I have ever been to. That it closes at 8pm, rather than the typical 2am, should be an indicator that Deluxe is professional and has standards. Everybody was friendly, the place is very clean, and there is surely an artist to fit your tattooing needs.
After viewing portfolios online, I decided to go to Jason Vaughn because of his unique style and excellent use of color. I was lucky to get an appointment within less than two weeks because of a cancellation, normally the wait is a couple of months. So, if you just want a small, simple tattoo or are very impatient (I've been there before) you should probably go to another shop. But really... Deluxe is so much more worth it. For what I got, the price was very reasonable and probably less or equal to what it would cost at other Chicago places.
Anyway, the drawing Jason came up with was fairly different from the original drawing I gave him as a basis... so I was a little nervous. However, I agreed to go with it because I came to Deluxe for a custom design and their expertise and talent. Obviously your tattoo has to fit your tastes and personality, but if I wanted an exact replica of something and no input, I could have gone to someone that just traces well, not a real artist.
So, it's a week later and I love my new tattoo. I love the design, the colors, the exact way in which he placed it, and it even healed quicker than any other I've gotten (it's significantly bigger and I was always sleeping on it, so I didn't expect that). I will never go to another tattoo shop in Chicago. There's really no reason to.
I find tattoo shop reviews to be very difficult. Â The product you get is completely conditional on the artist, but the atmosphere is conditional on the establishment. Â I will try to cover more of the establishment as a business with some mentioning of the artists.
I should mention I followed Chris Smith here with a work in progress. Â I had been to Taylor St. for a few sesssions with him and had to finish my piece here when they brought him on the team.
In my experience, Chicago loves their tattoo's and it's a thriving business. Â This also leads me to the conclusion that most Chicago tattoo parlors, although extremely talented, are overpriced. Â This place has a hourly rate from what I was told, which was an upset because if you know how meticulous Chris is, you will be paying big time. Â I was sitting there watching the other artists pound out these masterpieces in an hour. Â I heard from a few other sources that Nick is fast, and I saw it first hand. Â Another big fear I had is that the fame and attention of Hanna was going to make the shop awkward. Â It did not. Â She really didn't put herself on a pedestal (besides that they put her station in the front window) and was like any other artist.
The thing I really noticed about this place was the professionalism. Â The whole place is extremely clean, but not to the point that it makes a sterile atmosphere. Â Most of the veteran artists were extremely efficient. Â The staff is very friendly. Â I have a feeling the rules of the establishment are well enforced, because most tatoo artists in my opinion are flakey and cancel or take breaks on a regualar basis. Â This place keeps their staff in check. Â When Chris went out for a smoke, he extracted that time from the bill.
I would love to go back, but it's just so damn expensive. Â Worth the quality if you don't want to leave the area. Â Personally, I know an excellent artist in Indiana that gives you a straight price and has his share of award winning pieces for half the price. Â Then again, I like to travel.
I will confess, right now, that I am 100% biased. Â My mother is one of the artists at Deluxe, and because of this, I obviously am going to have a swayed opinion. Â
Having said this, I adore Deluxe and all of its artists. Â I've had work done by only one at this point (my mum!), but I have been acquainted with most of the artists. Â Ben's talent is legendary around Chicago, Harlan is amazing, Miles is just fantastic, Tim has a waiting list three days long... I could go on. Â I have a very discerning eye with regard to tattooing (and art in general) and I would absolutely let any one of these amazing artists doodle on my skin, any day of the week. Â
The quality of the shop is undeniable. Â Ben takes great care to have the best possible staff, and he is incredibly helpful. Â (I tend to observe his behavior with clients/potential clients when I'm in the shop.) Â There is some limited flash on the wall, if that's what you're really after, but these guys are just amazing with custom work.
By all means, check the shop out if you're looking for any ink.
After a bit of research on Yelp I decided that my friend and I would get our first tattoos at Deluxe. It definitely deserves 5 stars and it lived up to all the awesome reviews.
I had a lot of fears coming into the experience, surprisingly pain wasn't one of them. I was hoping I'd get an artist who would understand what I wanted and wouldn't push me to get something I didn't want. I was also afraid of getting one of those horror story 'artists' or being judged or getting those "you don't belong here" vibes.
I honestly should not have been afraid of any of that-- the moment we stepped into Deluxe we were greeted by one of the artists and he called over the person who puts together the appointments (she was also very friendly).
It turned out that all the artists' time slots were booked but after going over with us what we wanted they were super accommodating and had us come back an hour later to see if they could possibly squeeze us in.
Ben was available for me when we came back and he was very thorough in planning out my tattoo. He kept encouraging me to have my friends check out the process to make sure they approved which I thought was really considerate and patient of him. He answered all my questions and spoke about any concerns I might have before I even had them. Plus, it was surprisingly almost pain free.
Not once did I feel like I was being judged by any of the staff nor did I get any "you don't belong here" vibes. Everyone was very friendly and professional. It was just an overall awesome experience. I'd definitely recommend Deluxe to anyone.
I decided to get my first tattoo a year ago, and set about to do research on all of the tattoo shops in Chicago. After looking around I decided on Deluxe.
I walked in and talked to an artist that was standing at the "desk". He was very patient with me and talked through the design I was thinking about and made an appointment. He even called during the week to discuss some problems he thought might arise with the design and placement I had chosen.
I changed my mind on the design (to do it right it would have been too large for the place I wanted it), I brought in the new artwork to my appointment. He was great about it, and got right to work. He also spent time explaining about what he was going to do and about what it would feel like.
In the end my tattoo is very simple black ink tattoo, it is perfect and only took 15 minutes! It is a delicate lined piece and my artist was able to preserve that delicacy. It healed beautifully and expertly done.
I highly recommend this shop!
I'm new to Chicago, I've only been here for about 6 months and was referred to Deluxe by a friend from work. After going through all of the employees porfolios online I decided to have Tim Biedron give me a full sleeve after my grandma passed away last October.
He gave me the BEST tattoo (so far just the outline) I could EVER ask for. The lines are so perfect, its as if they came out with machines or something that do everything flawless. And the detail...? UNBELIEVABLE. I said to one of the other employees that came over to check it out when it was done, "I couldnt ask for anything better..." He replied, "Well you could.. but you may not get it!" That is sooo true. I can't wait for it to be done, when you're getting a piece like this done and it costs $150 an hour its hard to make it in when I haven't been to work in about 10 weeks due to a shoulder surgery.... but DEFINITELY go to Deluxe if you're thinking about having any work done soon! I'll probably never have anyone work on me but Tim ever again.
While you usually have to book well in advance, depending on who you see, deluxe is the only place I will go for ink in Chicago.
Two years ago I found Miles' work and contacted him about a tattoo I was designing and surprising my boyfriend with. We met several times to discuss the style and price so I could be ready to pay for it when I brought my boyfriend in. His artwork was spot on what we wanted. The fade he put in the letter forms gets compliments to this day.
Last December I went back to Miles for my first real tattoo covering the top of my right foot; his drawing was again, spot on and with small changes it was perfect. He put up with my fidgeting and ticklish foot and the end result is gorgeous. I've already made another appointment with Miles for a new project.
Everyone at the shop is easy going and friendly and the pricing is on point for the level of artistry and skill I have experienced. I'm looking forward to my next appt...
Chris tattooed two beautiful hummingbirds on my shoulders last week; he did a fantastic job cleaning up and finalizing the design I brought in, and I'm very pleased indeed by how fast and meticulous he was on the actual day of my appointment (he spent a good 20 minutes just placing the stencils he'd drawn so that they were absolutely symmetrical).
But mostly I just want to say how much I appreciate the fact that every single interaction I had with Deluxe artists, whether on the phone or in person, was positive. They are cheerful, friendly, and helpful, and there is absolutely no cooler-than-thou vibe here.
Absolutely, positively, the best tattoo shop in Chicago. I don't deny that there are some other phenomenal artists in the area, but not this many in one place. I personally only get inked by Tim Biedron, as his art style matches the pictures in my head exactly, but if I were looking for something in a bit different vein, I would NEVER hesistate to get inked by Ben, Harlan, or Hannah. I am not as familiar with the other artists who work here but judging by the photo books of other artists I've flipped through while waiting over the years, I am sure you'd be in good hands.
Very clean, very professional, the sterilization equipment is right in front of you so you can watch if you are concerned about that sort of thing. The prices are reasonable especially considering the quality of work you can get here.
I would never go anywhere else.
Ben has always come highly recommended by my friend Marty, but it was my husband only settling for Hannah that led us to Deluxe. She used to work on him out in the suburbs, so we made the trek into the city once she relocated to Deluxe.
The times that I have been there have always been quiet, no walk-ins or people looking at flash on the wall, not to say that the artists weren't busy, I think they just plan their appointments well. I hate that whole feeling of "Next" so this was always appreciated. The areas were all clean... really clean. Every one was professional.
It's hard to review the business as a whole when the spotlight is really on Hannah. From the first minute I met her, I was in love! And this is from someone who met her brother 20 years ago and hated him on sight (yes, I can hold quite the grudge). Hannah did 2 custom pieces for me (one was a matching anniversary tattoo for both my husband and I) and "fixed" a few more that were older and had been done by other tattooists. Her style and talent are amazing. She was a bit pricey before she got all famous, and unfortunately now, she is even pricier. We have a mortgage to pay. Sucks to be us.
This is the kind of quality establishment that will end up fixing all the crap you got messed up by going somewhere else.
From calling, to walking in, to consultation, to concept, to inking, this place is phenomenal. Â I hope they remain in business for as long as I'm alive. Â I've had three other tattoos done in the past, all in different shops, but no experience was this easy and friendly. Â It's become my new home for ink in one small tattoo (and a bonus touch up of one I had done in New Orleans).
From everything I've heard and all the work I've seen, I knew this would be the place for me. Â These artists live up to their reputations. Â Chris Smith had a great sense of humor about my geeky tattoo choice. Â He's pretty deft with the fine, sweeping lines. Â I think I've adopted him as my tattoo guru before he even finished the stencil. Â
Oh, and they are definitely reasonable on the pocket. Â For great quality work and vision, I'd say that's a steal. Â
Thanks to Melle and Mary of Urban Lift (and to the many raving Yelpers!) for the heads up on Deluxe. Â I'll probably be back there sooner than I expected.
More ink, please!
I got tattooed by Harlan, and the experience was perfect. He was really nice, accommodating and easy to get along with. I started out by emailing him, then went in for a consultation where he outlined my arm on stencil paper. Since my schedule didn't really allow me a lot of time to come into the shop to talk about design, he emailed me the tattoo design that he drew up. It was really easy, I was very comfortable in the shop and I will definitely be going back there for more tattoos in the future!
Like Teresa M., people constantly stop me when I'm out (the idiots literally GRAB me by my arm to examine it) and ask me where I got tattooed.
"So how's your burger?"
"Damn, good"
"So what do you wanna do after this?"
"I don't know, hmmm let's go get tattoos"
"Ok"
Well, after having burgers for breakfast we decided to get tattoos for dessert. I actually just wanted some 'fixing up' of a couple old ones that someone jacked up years ago, when I was too young and too naive to know any better.
This place had so many good reviews that I decided to go here. However, in my experience my tattoo artist, Jason, was really lacking a personality. However, I didn't come here for either a hug or a stimulating conversation, but for good art work...and that he provided. I guess I should cut him some slack, it was a Monday morning, and like any other job....Mondays usually suck.
All in all, I'm happy with my ink job....and laying out in that window like some sort of a disturbed display while someone sticks 7 gauge needles into your abdomen....you achieve some sort of clarity into your life. Somewhere your thoughts ricochet between the liberating feeling of your adult choices, a glimpse of your eventual demise and the irrelevance of it all.
Honestly, the place wasn't terrible but they definitely had some "tattitude".
Called ahead on a small piece a friend and I were having done. Was referred to Zach. He was really grouchy which would be tolerable considering a lot of artists are quiet/grumpy (he also mentioned having a cold), but he sort of drew a line for me when he messed up the heart in both mine and my friend's tattoo. If you can't draw lines and are sneezing/coughing, maybe you shouldn't come into work?
Yeah it was a small piece but I expect to be treated well as I'm paying for it. My friend and I also tipped him well for a 50 dollar tattoo. Everyone else seemed awesome but I didn't get the level of service I would have liked.
So, I live like 10 feet away from Deluxe and drive past it every day. Â This past February, I decided that it was time for another tattoo. Â My last tattoo was done when I was 18 (thank you fake IDs), so I hadn't really been to a shop for like 10 years and was not exactly in the know how. Â Because it was close, I decided to walk in there. Â I looked at their portfolios and looked around the place and liked what I saw.
A few weeks later, I made the decision of what I wanted, brought it to the shop and met Zack. Â Mind you, my tattoo was extremely sentimental and brings tears people's eyes everytime they see it. Â Zack was totally cool about it and completely calm and collected every step of the way. Â That was exactly what I needed...not only was I a bit uneasy emotionally, but I was also totally freaked out because I'm a pussy and I think that tattoos really hurt...bad.
On buzzes the needle and f bombs are flying out of my mouth like its going out of style, but finally we finish. Â At this point I look at it and start crying my eyes out. Â Zack steps out for a smoke...I bet he had a tear in his eye too. Â
I can honestly say that it was a great experience. Â Completely professional, completely clean, completely perfect!
I wanted a custom tattoo and let me tell you it was a long and lengthy process trying to find someone who is a real tattoo artist. I had a vision, some thoughts but I personally could not put my design on paper. Most artists I met, made me look through books or wanted to crop stencils. Now way that's not for me mate!
I finally realized with the success of the Tattoo Real Life TV phenomenon, every one these days is an 'artist'. Yeah an artist at shooting the shit. Seriously, I was getting impatient until I called Tim Biedron at Deluxe Tattoo and it dawned on me I was meant to go through all the bullshit so I could find him.
I started off the normal way of trying to contact him through email and an auto response came back stating he was fully booked. I was so frustrated I picked up the phone and lo and behold Mr. Timmy answered the phone. I told him my dilemma and he agreed to see me for a consult. Now let me just say this, I was very picky about my tattoo, it was going to cover my whole left shoulder so I was nervous to say the least.
I arrive there to talk to Tim about my ideas. He understood and right then and there he started to rough sketch a design for me. At last I found an artist who truly was one. Check out his website he is a genius. http://www.timbiedron.co…
The down side was that I had to wait 6 months for him to do it. I had already spent 6 months researching, trying to find someone. Let's just say I was more than anxious to get it done. 6 months flew by, (like he said, know all!) and his ideas were as fresh as the day I met him. He presented his final design and I expected it to be tweaked a little to my liking, but this guy was bang on with my ideas and I could not believe all my random thoughts were drawn brilliantly on paper for my tattoo.
His line work is amazing, people comment on my tattoo all the time. All the staff at Deluxe are wonderful and it really does feel like a family work unit there. The artwork I saw there was above par and their colourings are amazing. They take their sanitary practices seriously here. I have never seen so many disposable gloves thrown in the garbage. I had a tattoo done at Jade Dragon years ago, because that was the place to go to at the time. Night and day that is all I can say.
Seriously if want a great job done and you can be patient, anyone of the Deluxe crew will do a great job for you. I would say Tim, Hannah and Jason are the best. Worth the wait!
I came to Deluxe Tattoo with an odd idea, and I got a couple of funny looks for it. Â I was told to call back and speak with Zach, and that maybe he could hammer out an idea with me. Â
We did, and set up an appointment for about a month and a half later. Â
Until I walked in the door the day of my appointment, I only had a vague idea of what it was going to be. Â But when I saw it, I was in awe of how perfect it was.
An hour and a half, and a lot of pain and wincing later (yes, I'm a sissy, and needles hurt when they're hitting your tendons), I have one excellent piece of art on my arm.
I cannot stress how much of a positive experience this was, and how excellent of an artist I think Zach to be. Â I took a handful of his cards to give out, and ran out of them within a few hours, because almost everyone who saw my tattoo (half obscured by a bandage and through saran wrap), asked for a card. Â
I am already bouncing ideas around in my head for my next one.
I love this place. Â A few years ago I came here to get a new tattoo and a fix up on an old one done at Tatu Tattoo. Â I had Hannah (before she got all famous) and ended up going back to her several times. Â She's super sweet and just plain fun to talk to.
Tim Biedron and Harlan are also good but I've only actually been tattooed by Hannah.
Everyone here is really nice and professional. Â QUALITY work by real artists.
I have been getting tattooed by Ben for hmmm...about 8 years now (7 tats by Ben). I have a large celtic cross that Ben did on my left upper arm and I get seriously complimented on it all the time! But more importantly, I love it! It is not just a typical celtic cross. It has massive amounts of shading and is more detailed than almost all celtic crosses the I have seen. Ben can rock out any tattoo that you can think of!
Oh yeah, he is REALLY good at cover-ups. I had some stupid tattoo that I got when I was a dumb teenager and Ben worked with me until we came up with a good idea for a cover-up and now not only can you not see the stupid tattoo underneath but the cover-up is a great tat itself!
Tim Biedron (who is booked until armageddon) is another artist responsible for the unsolicited compliments that I get from strangers. Wow! Tim is seriously an awesome artist and a way chill dude. If I had his talent I would act like I was a rockstar or something. I brought Tim a picture of my sister and I when we were little kids and a painting by an artist that I liked and he married the two ideas and created a unique and beautiful tat that I am SUPER happy with! Oh yeah, his dog Pete is super cute too!
I'm only leaving a review because Zach was adamant on a review that didn't make him look like a snappy little school girl, which he is not, most of the time. Â I actually though Zach was amazing, he made me feel comfortable and at ease, seeing how it was my first tattoo and all. Â He did a phenomenal job, and the tattoo was much more than I had imagined. Â He, along with the rest of the artists at Deluxe, were really funny and unpretentious, which is not what you'd find at other tattoo establishments. Â The artistry at Deluxe is amazing, or at least from what I observed while I was getting my tattoo done.
All-in-all it was a great experience. Â You definitely get what you pay for, Â strike that, you get more.
Deluxe is top notch, I had my work done with Miles (prev. of Taylor Street Tattoo) and his linework and detail is jaw-dropping. The shop itself is fantastic and the other artists (Harlan, Ben, Tim) I saw or knew of are stellar.
Super clean, very inviting and friendly atmosphere. A real and quality shop.
Great artists. Great shop. Great experience.
Ben Wahhh's work is what drew me to Deluxe Tattoo but while there for my half-sleeve (for 4 separate sittings - see pic in my profile) I had the pleasure of watching the other artists do incredible work with a flair and love of the craft that I'd not seen at any other Chicago shop. Everyone was really into what they were doing and that made the vibe in the shop a real pleasure to experience.
They've added a couple new artists since I was there last, but I have so much confidence in Ben and his crew that I'd get a piece from any of them just because they're at Deluxe. The shop and the artists are just that good.
Ah, Deluxe. I wish I weren't so damned broke and trying to pay off my credit card. Otherwise it would be maxed out and I would be covered in beautiful tattoos.
I'm in the process of getting a full sleeve of a Japanese geisha with Miles (formerly of Taylor Street Tattoo), he's incredibly talented, and if you're looking for traditional Japanese, he's your guy.
Hannah Aitchison is an awesome pin-up artist who was featured on the 'LA Ink' television program. Tim Biedron does beautiful full colour, detailed pieces. Essentially everyone here is a talented artist and prolific tattooer. I would not hesitate to send anyone here for a tattoo, be it something small and unfussy or some large project. You will definitely not be disappointed.
Definitely the best shop in the city. If you want the amazing artistry and detail that usually can't be expected in a tattoo, you head for this shop. Tim Biedron's line work is unparalleled and his art work (in addition to his tattoo work) really displays skill and eye that is uncommon in tattooing. Harlan does amazing traditional work with a really creative twist on color.
There isn't much I can say that isn't covered except to say the wait is really extensive. If you know you want work, plan ahead and make an appointment or at least talk to someone there about availability as soon as you can.
For instance, Tim can have a 6-month waiting period. NO KIDDING. With skill like that, it's no surprise he's popular. If your work doesn't demand that skill, and as much as people think it does when it's their body, it may not so waiting that long might be unnecessary.
The average wait for the most of their artists isn't that long, but you never know! Call ahead or drop in and talk about availability before you make a bet that you can get work done soon.
And as if I needed another reason to love this place, Chris Smith from Taylor Street is moving here.
Only place you need to go. Zack rocks but Tim is the best!! I have to mention that Zack has worked and is familiar with black and or ethnic skin before and can make a tattoo pop! Do you know how valuable that information is alone? haha
The short, they rock and the cost is a lot less than the pricer, sh*ter salons that I had the misfortune of wasting my money at. GO TO DELUXE!!!
I have been tattooed in many cities and have met many tattoo artists, been to many shops and have had many regrets. I needed to cover up those regrets and through another local artist found Deluxe and I have never been happier with a tattoo artist than I have been with Hannah. The other talents at Deluxe are amazing and if Hannah ever can not accommodate me I know that I will have great artists available.
The thing that I love most about Deluxe is that everyone here is not "too cool" like I have experienced in other shops. If you have work done or have ever been in a tattoo shop you know what I am talking about. (The indifference, the "yeah whatevers," the "yes I can write that in Chinese".) When I first went in to discuss my piece, I found that they wanted to work WITH me on my idea and took great care in how I felt and really wanted me to be happy with the piece before we ever got to the needle. (Hannah drew up my idea 3 times!)
I get stopped on the street every few minutes during short sleeve weather with questions about my work. Most are amazed and ask where I got it done. When I say I went to Deluxe most say that they have never heard of it. Well you should!
I just got my tattoo from DELUXE and it covers my whole back almost and whats cool about the tattoo it is written in my language (Assyrian) which is very hard to copy but Ben Wahhh did a exalent job on my tattoo and I never been happier I recommend all my friends to go to DELUXE tattoo for the great work and awsome prices I plan to go back soon and get another one Â
GET INKED !!!!!!!!!!!
