I'll preface this review by saying I did not get a tattoo here. This review is based solely on customer service.
I ended up here one night with a friend. Both of us were interested in tatoos but didn't have a clear idea. We went in and started looking through their folders. Meanwhile, the guy at the front desk helped other people... if you can call it that.
As we lingered for about 30 minutes, I saw him berate one customer and telling her that her tattoo would look like shit in a couple of years and that he would have never done it. This other guy was asking for input on a design, but he was so busy being an asshole to other customers, that he up and left.
When we finally talked to him, my friend had picked out a design from one of the books and he gave us a price quote. I joked that she wouldn't get one unless I did at which point he replied that he coudn't care less whether or not she got a tattoo. We didn't bother asking any more questions.
I have several tattoos and I've gone into a ton of tattoo places just to chat or get some ideas and have never been treated so badly or watched other people get treated so badly in such a short time span. If you have a stick up your ass, then I'm not interested in what you're selling.
There are plenty of places that are clean and have talented artists that are not run by rude assholes. Go there for your body art!
One of the cleanest tattoo parlors I've ever been to. Everyone was very nice and accommodating to our requests. Got a simple tattoo. It literally took about 5 minutes and didn't hurt as much as I was expecting it to.
Very reasonable pricing. Friendly and professional staff. Would recommend to anyone wanting to get a tattoo in NOLA. They accept credit cards but prefer cash!
Since I had a fantastic experience during my last visit back in July, I decided to arrange an appointment with Ed to get another tattoo done. Ed is a great artist and it really shows with his passion and pride in making every tattoo he works on a beautiful masterpiece. I went in for a consultation with him to go over my next tattoo, which was a beautiful looking opera singer in wardrobe to dedicate to my Grandmother who was an opera singer for over 30 years. I wanted to get it on my left arm. Nonetheless, he had a lot of ideas to make it look even better than the sketch.
After the consultation, I went back in a week later to get it done. After about four hours of detailed work, he got most of it done, but recommended that I come back in to get the rest of it finished. Unfortunately, my arm didn't heal as quickly as I'd hoped and there was some scars that came from it. The way that the human body responds is unpredictable, but hey, that's life : ).
I came back in a couple times once I healed to get pieces of the tattoo touched up. Ed understood that the healing can be a bitch sometimes and put me at ease that the scars would not be an issue to clear up. After these visits, I walked out with a gorgeous looking opera singer tattoo on my arm : ). Went back to New York and my Grandmother was so pleased that she couldn't help but shed some tears. Music and singing is an important part of my life and also important to my family. I've gotten tons and tons of compliments on it and have recommended Ed to everyone that is thinking about getting a tattoo.
I realize that I'm exceeding this review, but I wanted to let anyone who may read this know that this tattoo shop is very professional in their approach and have fantastic customer service. Louie (I think I have his spelling right) was great with getting in touch with me as well and working out the appointments and consultations. It's a real pleasure to get work done with these guys. I look forward to getting more work done in the future.
Thanks Ed and ELT.
I was super excited to get a tattoo here...unfortunately it did not turn out well at all. Of course I was on vacay in NOLA with a girlfriend and we decided to get the tattoo that we had been talking about getting for months while we were here. It would kill 2 birds with 1 stone...get the tattoo we had been wanting and commemorate the fun vacay. The shop was clean, the people were nice, BUT the biggest and most permanent thing..the tattoo turned out less than desirable. Â After voicing my concern and thoughts Ed, the owner of the shop went above and beyond to make things right. He really cares about his shop and the people who come there to get their ink. So, although the first experiences end result isn't what we would've imagined...Ed has done all he can, plus more to change that. I really appreciate his thought and concern for the entire situation!!!! Â Thankful people like Ed still exist!
Review Source:Every birthday for the last ten years I talk it up to convince myself to get my first tattoo. I go back to the same image of Yoshitomo Nara's Missing in Action girl, but always chicken out. Â It's my 31st birthday today AND I'm in NOLA. My bf surprises me with a well-researched proposition to finally get the tattoo of my dreams at Electric Ladyland. I get there and the shop is beautiful and pristine. Angi greets me immediately with enthusiasm and sweetness. I show her what I want and she sets me up with Scott. I ask to come back in 45 mins to get lunch. No problem. I come back and Scott gives me the details and sketch he did while I was gone. His description assures me that he really did some serious research while I was gone. Everyone here is exceptionally professional, super nice and the place is immaculate. Best birthday EVER and such a memorable first tattoo experience! The tattoo is so detailed in color and shading. It came out better than I could have ever imagined. Nara would approve for sure! Thanks Scott!!!
Review Source:I'm surprised I haven't written a review for Electric Ladyland yet as I first got tattooed here 4 years ago.
When people ask for shop recommendations in New Orleans, I always direct them here. The shop is immaculate and all of the employees are friendly and seem to really love their craft. The tattoo prices are reasonable and they do free touch-ups on tattoos you got there on weekdays (something I have yet to take advantage of but need to).
I did find their piercing prices to be a little steep. I went there to get my ears pierced a few weeks ago and it was $40 per earring for teensy tiny studs and then an additional $20 for the piercing itself. $100 before tip for getting my ears pierced?! I always give people flack for not wanting to pay for something that will be on/in your body permenantly, especially when cleanliness and quality is of the utmost importance, but $100 just seemed crazy pricey.
The shop is right at the heart of Frenchmen St with only street parking available so prepare yourself for a crowd and traffic if you go at night. My suggestion would be to stop in on a weekday.
I was what in many tattoo shops would probably be considered a nightmare scenario. Â Virgin Canvas, from out of State, with limited time to schedule, wanting a relatively small piece, but very specific about what I wanted.
The process of scheduling my appointment was a bit more difficult than I suspect it should have been, but this may have been because it was during the time of the transition to ownership. Â It took a false start or two before I could get my price estimate and get an appointment and make the deposit.
A minor inconvenience overall, and only worth noting because everything else was so top notch that I am sort of surprised that it seemed disorganized.
From then on out, everything was simply a fantastic experience. Â The shop is clean, well lit, and welcoming. Â For those that accept any level of artistry or are used to getting flash tattoos, the price at first may seem a bit steep, but in reality it is about the same as other quality shops.
My tattoo was done by Scott Barbier, and from start to finish, I am nothing less than thrilled. Â I didn't get the look of disdain about being a first timer, he made the process simple, his artwork is fantastic even taking my idea and offering some suggestions on tweaks that I loved. Â He was patient, explained everything to this newbie and set my mind at ease which probably made me relaxed enough that it is about as close to a painfree experience as you can get with a tattoo.
If there is one drawback, and this is a personal one, it is that I got my first tattoo at a shop 1300 miles away, and since I don't know that I want to go anywhere else, it is going to be one heck of a trek back to get my next one.
I wouldn't hesitate recommending Scott and/or Electric Ladyland to anyone considering a tattoo.
super professional + clean clean clean = great place to permanently mark your body :-)
Came in here the other day to get tattoos with some friends of mine. Â It was super easy and well priced and we all left really happy with our new tattoos. Â I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking!
Took a trip from Los Angeles to NOLA for my 30th bday back in October. My boyfriend and I are both heavily tattooed and don't typically get tattooed on a whim, by an artist we aren't familiar with. But it was my birthday and NOLA is a special place for us so we thought it would be fun to get some Fleur De Lis tattoos at 10pm on a Monday night. We had heard of Electirc Ladyland before so thought this was our best bet.
We took a pedi-cab over and were greeted by the counter dude, who was really friendly and helpful. He gave us all the books for the 3 artists that were working that night. After looking through of them, we both agreed that we wanted Lester to tattoo the both of us. His line work seemed the cleanest, and since we were just getting small outlines, that was really important to us.
The guy at the counter told us that Lester had some place to be soon, so he could only take one of us and that the other would have to see another artist. We were really bummed because we wanted our tattoos to be by the same person and we didn't want to be tattooed in separate rooms so we couldn't be with each other at the time of the tattoos. But the counter dude went and explained the situation to Lester and Lester agreed to squeeze us both in. We were psyched that he was flexible and willing to do both of us right then and there.
Lester was really friendly and didn't even get weirded out when my boyfriend blacked out for about a minute due to his fear of needles. Hahaha.
I highly recommend this shop, and specifically Lester :)
Okay. Â My daughter wanted to get a tattoo; and she was determined to get it at Electric Ladyland (being a Hendrix fan). Â We went over there with her vision. Â The guys were great about it - they explained why they didn't think it would work and tried to work with her offering variations on the idea. Â She was going to go forward, but it just wasn't what she wanted. Â I strongly encouraged her to speak up - she was unhappy and no artist wants to give someone something they do not love. Â Everyone was wonderful about it - there was no judgement. Â Louie, our greeter, was gentle and reassuring. Â We walked away and she decided to do something different - something that had come to her during our visit in the Quarter - and we returned to the parlor later that day. Â Louie shared her excitement with her new image and found her the right artist to do the work - Kenny Rice. Â AND - Â I also got a tattoo!!! Â I hadn't planned it; I had a vision while there. Â I explained to Louie what I was imagining and what it meant to me. Â He worked with me to find a photo and he found the right artist (Pete Raizis) who rendered my vision perfectly - just what I imagined!!! Â I am very happy with our total experience. Â The shop was clean, everyone was friendly, I didn't hear one curse word! Â I got my first tattoo with my first daughter about ten years ago, and now my second tattoo with my second daughter.
Review Source:Friend had recommended Scott at Electric Ladyland. Â Came from north Mississippi for the purpose of getting a tattoo done. Â I was extremely impressed with the facility as well as the professionalism, accessibility, and creativity of the staff and in no time felt as though I had known them for a very long time. Â Scott Barbier was superb and a true artist. Â Will continue to use Electric Ladyland and Scott exclusively for additional work I am wanting to have done.
Todd
Super clean, professional and friendly.
I had a small piece done over a year ago and couldnt be happier. Â The artist (who's name I'm totally drawing a blank on, my apologies) was great and while I'm sure he enjoys working on larger, more artistically creative pieces, made me feel comfortable and that my forearm's colorful pansy was just as important as some massive tattoo!
Of Note: Â I asked around the Nola area for months and even people with work done elsewhere all recommended Electric Ladyland Tattoo. Â Also, my artist was so great, I was in zero discomfort. Â At one point I was literally checked work emails with my other hand!
So Amazing!!! Â Decided on a bridal shower weekend to NOLA that I wanted to get tattoo that I'd been waiting on. Â ELT was wonderful and professional! Â Kenny, my artist, was so funny and great to work with. Â I got a fabulous tattoo and my friend got a great experience talking with Kenny! Â I'd recommend to anyone! Â You guys rock!
Review Source:My roommate Emma and I came to NOLA for Spring Break this year, so we decided to get a souvenir here at Electric Ladyland Tattoo.
BEST DECISION EVER.
We walked in right after two other people, so we had to wait about 30 minutes, but both of our tattoos only took about 40 minutes total, so we were out in a hurry. But our artist, Kenny, did a fantastic job! The price was fair, even after tip and was worth every penny. We're both more than pleased with our new tattoos, and I know that on my trip come next spring, I'll be adding to it!
Electric Ladyland, I'll be seeing you guys next spring!
This place is so awesome. Â My boyfriend went in to update his tattoo during Jazz Fest. Â They made a time for him so we wouldn't miss any of the festival. Â He gave them a $50.00 dep and the next morning he decided that being in the hot sun sweating would not be good for a new tattoo. He called them up to cancel the appointment not expecting his deposit back but without any hesitation they refunded him the $50.00. Â How cool is that. Â
Going around New Orleans we asked everyone local that had tats who they used and 99% of them said Electric Landyland Tattoo was the ONLY place to go.
New Orleaner at heart I decided to get some more ink done this visit. Â After a few beers and a Po Boy in the park I stopped into Electric Ladyland and me with Ed over a design idea. Â Having freakishly weird similarities in our lives we hit it off great in an unpretentious setting with pretty cool staff. Â A few hours later I was sitting in his room getting absolutely great artwork. Â For natives and travelers alike I highly recommend Electric Ladyland for ink and or piercings. Â Thumb through the artist portfolios to find an artist who matches your eye for design.
Review Source:After getting a recommendation from a friend, my girls and I wandered into this tiny little shop on Frenchmen St. to get some piercings. Â I got my tragus pierced, my friend got her nipple pierced, and another friend got her ears stretched and then came back to get a tattoo too. Â Some things I was a HUGE fan of: Â Caleb, the piercer, was awesome. Â He was so nice, knowledgeable, outgoing, and good at what he does. Â He was quick and caring and answered a ton of questions. Â I wish I had all my piercings done by him because he is so professional and sweet. Â When it's time to get the other tragus done, I will seriously come all the way back to this shop to get it done. Â The tattoo artist, Matty, was also really nice. Â It was my friend's first tat and he was really accommodating even though she was super vague about what she envisioned. Â He was really nice and did great work. Â His lines were good and his shading was awesome too. Â It was really nice work. Â
All of the staff here seem really accommodating and nice (even though they probably have to put up with a lot of shit in NOLA so it's even more refreshing to see that they are not jaded by idiot tourists). Â The only tips I can offer is that it is cash only for tats, you need cash to tip for piercings, and you can charge the piercing and jewelry.
TAT TAT TATTED UP!
We were in NOLA for Mardi Gras and my friend had always wanted to get a tattoo. So on a rainy afternoon, we decided hey why not now? We asked our waiter at brunch where he recommended and he pointed us to ELT. I read the Yelp reviews (obvyyy) before trotting over to Frenchmen and saw some not so great reviews and was a tad bit nervous before going...but that wasn't the case at all! The people there were all SUPER friendly and accommodating - my friend had sooo many questions as it was her first tattoo. Everyone answered her questions and did not seem impatient with her at all. They say tattoos are cash only but we didn't have enough cash so they even let her use her card.
The entire process was fun and painless (for the most part..haha) and my friend left LOVING her tattoo. Actually we spent about 3 hours here because she got double ear piercings from Caleb as well.
Definitely a clean, professional, and safe place to get a tattoo or piercing! Highly recommend!
Excellent service and work. I have the outline of a bunch of flowers on my back and unfortunately, the artist that started them is deceased so I went in to have some color/shading etc. filled in and finished. Lester was awesome, did an excellent job, and obviously takes his art and craft very seriously. I highly recommend him. Of course I was nervous but he made me very comfortable and just seemed super chill. The people working there were also super professional, friendly and helpful when I was looking through the artists' books. I love it.
Review Source:You know the tattoo artist attitude? I.e., that if you don't have a full sleeve you don't even deserve to breath the air inside the shop? Â Yeah, that does not exist here.
My brother and I had a wonderful experience at ELT. Price was right, work was superb. Ed did two small pieces on my shoulder and I will definitely ask for him again. Smart and funny guy, we had a great convo the whole time. This shop is great, best in the city.
Electric Ladyland is the only place I get my work done now. Â They've done 2 pieces for me plus an addition to one of them. Â Both Ed & Jason are great artists and I'm constantly getting complimented on my pieces they've done.
I've also got a nose piercing done here from Caleb. Â I was hesitant at first because I had one done in Key West before and it ended up being a disaster. Â Caleb was great, eased my mind and literally it was done in seconds and not nearly as painful as when I had it done before.
This shop is very clean, very professional and also extremely friendly, I recommend people to come here all the time. Â Great place, great artists!
I got my first tattoo from this place from a guy name Larry and he did an okay job not to my standards but i came back and got Henry to do my tattoo again and boy i like the way it turned out. A couple of my friends had theirs tattoo done by Annette and thats who i hope to do my next tattoo.
Review Source:I love electric lady land. Â I'll say it.
I've been nowhere else since I started getting work done. Â And yes, they are more pricey than other places. Â But every piece I've had done has been done by a friendly and professional artist. Â And they are artists.
I am most recently absolutely thrilled by the piece I am having done with henry. Â I have seen him tatoo my sister and my cousin as well as seen the work he has done on several of my friends. Â He understands what will look good on someone's body as well as what you want when you just come in with an idea. Â He's not necessarily chatty, but the fact is he's very very good at what he does.
The facility is also always clean and professional with a wide selection of available flash and artists. Â They can altar almost any design you have and love to do original work as well. Â I've never been peirced there, but I have seen many people come out happy and the jewelry looks awesome. Â Everyone here has experience and they know what they're doing. Â Super important.
I had thought about possibly going somehwere else for my next piece based on some friends' reviews. Â But I think that once this mother of a tat is done that I'm going to go back to henry. Â I think I've just found my artist.
Boooring very old news. Im new to yelp ,not Nola. I wasn't rude til I they were rude to me. I was told 2 hours later it was a no go. I like I said I have my knuckles done already with small tattoos anyway(and many more elswhere) so I have some knowledge of what can and cant be done. Its really nothing personal. Ive met cool people that have worked there. But to say the best around? I just dont think so. thats what reviews are for anyway. its wierd that you would respond tho, that was fun.
Review Source:My husband and I just got our first tattoos at Electric Ladyland.
I'm not in my early 20's and I have never before been to a tattoo parlor - SO I was definitely turned off by the profane language used by the employees while I was getting tattooed. This is the only reason why I didn't add that last star. Â
Everything else was great. We traveled from out-of-town and set up an appointment before we arrived to New Orleans. Once we arrived for our consultation we were scheduled for our first session two days later. Our appointments started on time and the charge was within the range we had been quoted a few days before.
The BEST part was the QUALITY of the artists. Our tattoos look amazing. The shading I got on my tattoo is the best I have ever seen. Â Â
We're going back to add in the color in February and looking forward to it - pain and all.
This was my first tattoo experience, and the people here were awesome. Henry did a tat for both me and my new husband - a fleur de lis customized with a heart instead of a band at the bottom. He was quick, professional, and made a real effort to make us comfortable since it was a first for us both. it was a truly wonderful experience, and I would definitely go back if I was in the city and wanted to get something done.
Review Source:Annette I think your response is why I won't be doing business with your shop. The fact that I have another white tattoo which in fact is gorgeous makes me quite confident I know how the work will turn out on my body. (Aside from the 20 other tats I have on me.) If you don't trust your own staff then that is your issue. Berating California tattoo artists as a whole is pretty sad on your part when we've seen bad tattoos come out of your own shop. I wish you yourself had seen my other tat so that you were more well informed before responding with your defensive little rant. Good luck, I'm sure your customers all appreciate being called ignorant. I'll happily go back to my local shop here in California but it's sad I can't help support a business in my home town. As you wish.
Review Source:I cannot say enough about how wonderful my entire experience was!! I emailed the shop on Jazzfest weekend to see about getting a Fleur de Lis before I left town. Annette emailed me back super promptly and asked I call for my appt time. She had requested I also email the image I liked to the shop to get things started. When I got there, they were all ready for me! I got my work done by Larry Bone and he is just fantastic! Took extra time with me to make sure it was just perfect. I have never had a tattoo experience exceed my expectations the way Larry, Annette and the rest of the crew did! I will definitely be back next time I come to town!
Review Source:While on a recent trip to NOLA I had the pleasure of being tattooed by Larry Bone. The staff there was great and larry did a great job. THe staff was also accommodating to my friend who was getting her first tattoo and they made sure that not only was she comfortable but that I could be there while she got it done. I would recommend them to anyone.
Review Source:Ed Dieringer is a great artist and ELII is an incredible studio. Â I had a chance to talk extensively with both Annette and Ed and they are professionals in a line of business that is filled with amateurs. Â If you're a drunk 19-year old who wants a 2" black Fleur de Lis, this probably isn't the place for you.
Review Source:annette wrote me a response to my review so to be fair, i'm going to upload a picture of my ex's tat taken *immediately* after. Â it's a thing of beauty to this day. Â in fact, the only thing that stopped me from taking it with me when we split was my belief in pacifism. Â okay, that's a lie, it was my belief i'd get my @ss thrown in jail and he just didn't seem worth it.
Review Source:It is unfortunate that the only place they mention accepting cash only for tattoos is buried at the bottom of the FAQ page of their website. I was recommended to this shop by a good friend of the owner some years ago, but only recently decided it was time to start getting my new pieces done for financial reasons. When I looked the shop up on the internet, every single advertisement (citysearch, yelp, yellowpages, etc) says they accept credit cards. Upon coming into the shop the first time I was met with indifference, and did not really feel like anybody there was particularly interested in doing my tattoo. I was already beginning to wonder about getting my work done there. I was then informed that they were only accepting cash. I assumed that since everything I saw indicated they did in fact accept credit cards, that they were having an issue with the machine or something of that nature. no big deal, I'm a local and will come back later. I was back in the Quarter for Carnival, and decided to stop in again. Since I do not generally walk around the Marigny or the Quarter with several hundred dollars in my pocket, I asked if they were accepting credit cards again yet. I was told no, they only accept cash for tattoos. I mentioned that they might want to adjust their online presence accordingly. This suggestion was met with such an attitude that I will never give this shop my money, no matter how good the work. I was informed with no shortage of pissy demeanor that "it says tattoos are cash only online, I did the website myself" by an employee. I must admit, their website does say cash only for tattoos, but only buried at the bottom of a FAQ page that is most likely only read by people looking to get their first tattoo (or me, searching to find where it was stated on the site). It is really a shame that the employees feel the need to be so damn rude to a local who very well could have brought them a lot more future business. I am sure they get enough tourists and walk-ins that they don't care about losing my business, and I am sure they treat the celebs that they boast about on their website better, but it would be beneficial to remember that it is us everyday locals that people ask for advise about things like were to find a "good" tattoo shop.
Edited to add update: Â Annette responded to the copy of this review I emailed to the shop directly. Â I believe she is earnest in her desire to remedy the situation, and has updated the website to indicate that they only accept cash for tattoos. Â I am not sure if they understand that that was not the source of my irratation, that I was unhappy with the attitude of the staff, even given the fact that they were busy and I, according to her, should have known better than to expect good service during Carnival. Â I agreed that I would be willing to give them another chance (let's face it, they have some quality artists, even if they lack good customer relations), and if it apears that she has made it clear to the staff that they need to impove the way they interact with customers, I will adjust this star rating of this review accordingly.
Annette,
Nice spin on the facts. Â Where did you get "you knew the apprentice was tattooing you for a discount"??? Â You remember me clearly from the HOUR I spent there FIVE YEARS ago? Â Really? Â Maybe you remember me clearly because you made a few hundred dollars for a crappy piece of work. Â How exactly is $300 for half an hour of work a DISCOUNT? Â And if you remember me so clearly, why DIDN'T you fire PJ on the spot that day? Â Because you thought you got away with it because I didn't get a good look at it? Â Do you even remember where on my body it was? Â You don't care if crap work goes on at your shop, as long as you get away with it?
The whole point of my review was that I DID NOT AGREE TO AN APPRENTICE! Â I was led to believe that I was getting an artist I had requested. Â As stated in my review, I discovered who PJ was (including his name) WELL after the fact. Â
What do you mean "fancy up?!? Â The tattoo looked NOTHING like the design! Â It looks like a child's coloring book version of it, at best! Â What little detail is there is wrong, it's crooked, and seriously looks like a kid scribbled it on. Â You cannot "fancy up" when you can't even get the basic image right.
As far as "speaking with you" Â if you haven't noticed, I do not live there. Â By the time I returned, I'd already taken care of the problem and chalked it up to a learning experience. Â Apparently you also did not notice that I STILL recommended your establishment , even after all that. Â The description of a two-star review, according to Yelp, is "meh, I've experienced better", which perfectly describes my experience with you. Â
Thanks for the offer to "fix or remove" but as I already stated in my review, it's been covered up, by a very reputable artist who took one look at it and said "Uhh... I can't fix that". Â Or maybe he's just not a "fancying up" kind of guy? Â If you'd like to send me a refund instead, I'd gladly accept it!
I was still recommending you, but after your attitude, forget it. This is http://yelp.com, not http://cryontheinternet.… as you seem to think. People are supposed to state their experiences, good or bad. Not every review can be five stars, and when you let people leave your shop with bad work, sorry, eventually word will get out. I stand by everything I said in my original review. Your shop was clean, people were pleasant enough, I've seen some great work come out of there, but I'll never be back.
I had my first up to my 6th tattoo fro Electric Ladyland. They 2 were done by Terry, one was a visiting artist, one by Annette, and one by Cameron. Â I also had my nose pierced there. They are clean and knowledgeable. I have folks admiring my ink all the time. Even little old ladies like it. We are moving back to New Orleans this weekend and I know right were I'm headed.
Review Source:We didn't have anything done here, because we didn't like the information we received. Â We went looking for a piercing studio, and this is the only one nearby (yes, we're tourists, no, we don't have a rental car). Â I have my sternum pierced and my sister was interested in getting the same piercing. Â The guy at the counter said that they do not do surface piercings "because they reject". Â Okay, that's fine, of course they reject... eventually... as can belly button piercings. Â But I understand that decision. Â However, he pulled out the jewelry he said they use and it was externally threaded... a huge no-no. Â I was interested in getting a different piercing even if they couldn't pierce my sister, but after seeing the bad jewelry I didn't feel so comfortable.
Review Source:As is already established, I have a lot of tattoos. I got my 6th tattoo here in December '07. They're in a busy and touristy area of the French Quarter, which I'm sure is both a blessing and a curse. My host and I had been drinking down the street at Hookah Cafe and , I decided it would be a *great* idea to get a fleur de lis tattooed on my left wrist.
The shop itself was clean and well run. They only took cash for tattoos, but since they had taken my id, I had to send my friend to the bar next door with my ATM card to get the necessary cash. The guy working the counter was friendly and helpful. I don't recall the name of the guy who tattooed me, but he did a fine job.
I give the shop three stars because everything was just "fine". I would've appreciated it if they'd allowed me to have my id back so I could've gone and gotten the cash myself. The tattoo itself was a faithful rendering of flash, but nothing really special. The line work was a bit shaky, but not horrible. I eventually ended up having it covered up for unrelated reasons.
If you go, I'm sure you'll have a "fine" experience.
This review comes with a warning. Electric Ladyland is on Frenchman, which is part of the very busy, very touristy French Quarter. It's located between popular bars and at times, it can get insane. Bring cash and keep your wits about you (that means come in sober, comprende Amigo?). ALWAYS review portfolios and do your homework. I'm really very sad to see what happened to Stefanie W. I would think that the owner would be appalled to know, she's a stand up woman.
I did something I rarely do when I visited ELII. I got a tattoo on a whim. This was pre Katrina and I had long wanted a large Fleur di-lis, so I gifted myself with a visit to the Frenchman Street location to find Marc the Shark working and knew it was a gift from God. He managed to fit me into his busy weekend schedule and also made room for my stepdaughter to receive the same art. What a sweetie.
Electric Ladyland is pure New Orleans, even after Katrina. From the brick walls, to the colorful atmosphere, to the wonderful selection of music (thanks for playing Linzi Zaorski and Tinmen, Marc!), it's a fun, upbeat place to add to your body art. There is no lack of flash to choose from in every conceivable style and it's what this busy street shop does best. If it's custom you're interested in, the uptown location is probably a better bet, but Marc was here and I knew busting out a Fleur wasn't going to be an issue.
The tattoo space is controlled so the tourists and lookie loos can't push in and turn your experience into a sideshow act and the counter help takes the safety and privacy of it's customers very seriously. Â They deal with happy (read: inebriated) visitors every day, and walk the line between friendly and firm very well.
Although I always feel you get what you pay for when it comes to tattoos (good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good), the artists at Electric Ladyland don't take undue advantage of their largely visiting clientele. The prices are more than fair and the work, at least from the artists I've know that have tattooed there is largely solid and quite good. Of course, if you can sit down with owner Miss Larue, you're in for an old-school treat.
So even though this is located in a tourist plagued la-la land, Electric Ladyland is a good, safe bet. Just remember to LOOK AT THOSE PORTFOLIOS and don't EVER be afraid to ask questions. Cash is always best, there used to be an added charge for credit cards. And don't forget to tip 'em.
I got both of my tattoos done here, and I'm thinking about getting another one the next time I go into town, just so I can come here. The staff is Incredibly helpful, laid back and personable. The prices are decent, and plus... they have this nice salon style room where people can walk by and watch you get inked. My first experience here was great- the owner actually did my tattoo, and some freaky middle-aged man oogled me through the window as I tried not to squirm while she shoved an ink-filled needle right on top of my spine. Ah, good times....
