The ink looks like a it was a first time tattoo. I am scarred in multiple areas. Almost all the lines are raised. This was a upper- to mid back  tattoo with plenty of meat, not on an area that is easy to scar like your foot or hand or finger .The fact that he runs Sailor Jerry's historical Tattoo shop implies that he must be talented. I  wanted a tattoo of a whale. Simple sketch outline, nothing extensive. 300$ not including tip.
I now I have a huge whale that is raised and scarred, some areas are just pink raw skin, The detail of the whale is Completely messed up. The small whale was freehanded and looks like a small child drew it. I'm not sure why he had a carbon copy to follow on. I texted him a picture of a few inches (the best I could do myself w a camera phone, hardly showing much at all, but so he could get the idea. He said use vitamin E. I had a deeper look at my back and realized how messed up the design was. the lines were blown out, and all meshed together. I texted him that it was a mess and I was scared and wanted him to look at it. His first response was Good luck with your move , I am sorry your dissatisfied, take care. I called him and had to convince him to meet up with me. He didn't even want to take a look for himself he just said I believe you, what do you want me to do about it?  Of course my reply was "look at it!" "It is your work, I want your professional opinion." Even though after the 14 tattoos I have, I knew it was not fixable. He looked at it in broad daylight. Downplayed the whole thing. All he said and did was use vitamin E,shrug his shoulders, and told me "Art is Relative" sorry you don't like it. I expressed I was concerned with my scarred skin, not aesthetics,(altho thats mesed up as well}  he just kept repeating himself. "Art is Relative".
I told him I wanted a refund and started crying because My back was scarred for life and I was going to have to pay to have it fixed and or removed. I don't make a lot of money, this was a whole weeks paycheck for me.  He said he could not refund me because it was his time spent. I  tried to reason with him in tears, clearly emotional and he had nothing to say really.  I said it isn't about relativity, it is about my skin and back being physically scarred, and it is improper application. I only wanted one color light grey, and he used a darker grey in the middle of a light grey outline? I know I could cover it with black but It will have scarred skin and grey mush underneath it.,and it would have to be a even bigger tattoo to fix the warped design.  The actual tattoo looks like someone who just started practicing tattooing. It was just flat out a bad tattoo.
A few hours later I got home to look at his business page on FB, and he removed my "fresh ink" photo from ihis album and defriended me. Clearly doesn't want to be related to this catastrophe or recognized for it.  I had several artists look at it. I'm scarred, I can go over it but has to be larger and wont look exactly the way it is supposed to.
I feel violated. I gave him a chance to make it right. He just said "cheers" and walked away finally. Its been a few months and i still have some soreness, especially when i bend over.
Sailor Jerry is a legend, and the fact that someone is in his shop, producing such bad work is a disgrace. I later found out that he has a reputation for "scratching" people up. I also was told he only started doing ink because the tattoo world was upset that the historical shop was only being used for Piercing, and not ink.  Look at the pictures yourself and make your own decision. = - (  Not to mention compare the baby whale that is on my back with the actual photo. I write this long review in hopes that I will save someone from having a permanent scar as I do.

There are 3 men in my life I am willing to have ruin my makeup.
My Daddy, Dr. Jon Yoshimura dds and Dan.

Dan impressed me so much with his good energy, professionalism and walking awesomeness when I came in for my first piercings that when it came for my septum piercing, there was no question who I would trust to do it.

    I also missed Poota :)

He walked and talked me through the whole process, answered all my questions, made sure I was doing ok through the piercing process. His aftercare is superior, and doesn't rush you. He also has a great pamphlet for the care and feeding of your piercings and tattoos.

Dan is so generous with jewelry too. You can tell that Dan really cares about the fine art of body modification.

    T h a n k   y o u, Dan! You are the BEST!!!

I first came to this shop when I first turned 18. Now I'm 24 and Dan's been the only one to tattoo and pierce me. He always seems to know how to put a smile on your face even when you've had the roughest day and is always available when I need him. I love you Dan!

First met Dan at the honolulu club he's an awesome  fella and a hell of an artist ,
He help me do makeover on one of my tatts and it was fast, accurate , and priced very well.
Few years later I saw Dan an he mention that if there's any thing that he need to redo on mine I should come in and he won't charge me for it , but , there was nothing to redo, the ink held and healed well and the lines stayed sharp.
    Thanks Dan .

Dan is one of the most sophisticate artist I've ever met. He's done two back pieces  n the details are so accurate its flawless how he does things. Plus he makes every visit comfortable and relaxing. So if you want a tattoo that is original and colorful and not like anyone else out there. Check Dan out.

I first met Dan when I moved on island because my best friend had started going to him for alot of her tattoo work.  For the record, she is now completely covered (Chest, arms, entire backpiece, stomach, sides, etc.) with Dan's artwork and it all looks great.

I also have three tattoos by "Danimal" as I lovingly call him and I have referred many of my friends here for tattoos and piercings of all kinds.  He is truly a genuinely awesome guy and is a total blast to be around, so he really puts you at ease for the painful process.

His shop has a lot of history, being Sailor Jerry's old shop, and Dan stays loyal to the salty sailor's "vintage" style. All of his equipment is top notch and he is extremely sanitary.  Just check his reviews- the stars don't lie.

Pricing is extremely reasonable for the Honolulu area, and he has been known to throw in little extras like a free belly button ring or other piece of jewelry if he really likes you; you just have to get past his precious pooch, Puta, the shop dog, first. ;)

Choosing a tattoo artist out of the many available on Oahu can be a very daunting task.  Hawaii rates it the top ten tattoo friendly states in America.  Going in for your first tattoo makes it all the more intimidating.   Luckily a good friend of mine introduced me to Dan at Eternal Body Art.  He explained all the procedures very thoroughly so that really put my at ease.  Dan's assistant Poota (the only dog I've ever seen with a mo-hawk) was also comforting to meet.  My first tattoo is memorial to a very close and dear friend of mine that passed away from cancer a few years back.  Dan did an excellent job on it!  Not only did I leave Eternal Body Art with a new tattoo,  I had left knowing that I made a new friend.  Since then I've only gone to his shop for all of my ink,  9 in total so far.   Among my tattoos, I have drawings that I chose online, designs that I did myself, and also designs that Dan did for me,  Dan had no problem doing any of them, and they all came out perfect!    Thank you Dan and Eternal Body Art!

also note Eternal Body Art is a personage of historical significance.  It's location in the heart of Chinatown, Honolulu was famous tattoo artist Sailor Jerry's final tatoo studio,  the only place tattoo studios were located at the time.

I checked this place out at Yelp because I really wanted another piercing ever since I got rid of my industrial :( It said it was open from 3:30 to 9 so I got there around 8 ish of maybe late 7??? cant remember, turns out the doors were locked and I was really disappointed because I thought it was closed, but then pops out a happy Dan with his cute little doggie in hand to open the door. He said he was closing because business was slow, but he said he'd make room for me (i thought that was nice because he couldve easily just said no, come back tomorrow, but he didn't which made me like Dan right off the bat).
The place is really small but really nice! I chose the kind of piercing and headed up stairs to get it done. Dan was really saintary and professional in his line of work :) He made the piercings not hurt at all, he has magic hands! I loved the piercing I got but came back the next day because they were bothering me at work. Once again, he attended me really fast and helped me changed the jewelry. Talk about great service! I do agree with another reviewer, Dan is really generous with jewelry because he gave me two free ones. And I am pretty sure I will be getting my first tattoo here. This place is a hidden gem, I recommend you go here because you will not recieve better service anywhere else. Dan, you are an awesome guy with the cutest dog, keep up the good work bruddah!

I absolutely love the convenience of this place. It's right next to my school, perfect for my spontaneous metal cravings.

I've gotten 4 piercings done by Dan and it's never rejected or caused me problems. He's very clean and sanitary, plus he has awesome bedside manner to make you feel comfortable. Especially if you're piercing in unconventional places!

I actually really like his shop. The interior is very dark and the decor really reflects his personality and individuality. He usually has his cute little poodle to greet you when you come in which also helps calms the nerves :)

He does all his work upstairs, which looks super cool by the way. I always loved that he used black gloves.

Price is reasonable, nothing to crazy. I wanna say I got my conch orbital for $60? (It's basically two piercings in one shot)

He's very generous with giving extra jewelry so be sure to tip good!

I love going to Dan for all my piercings. He pierces in the perfect spot, so it never looks crooked or off. I've brought my friends to get work done from him & all have loved it. So far he's pierced my anti-eyebrow (which was in the PERFECT spot, matched my face well), my septum (a couple times haha. Of course each time it was not crooked), & my tongue (again, not crooked). He is very friendly & makes you feel really comfortable. His shop is decorated awesome also & his dog is cute! Also, I've never had to wait more than 15 minutes. HIGHLY recommend!

I lost my tattoo virginity here, and I'm glad I did.  Great atmosphere, fantastic prices, and a rich history in this place make it THE place to get a tattoo in Honolulu.

Dan, my artist, was great.  He's got a great personality that made the whole process go by quick and as painless as possible.  His artistic talents are impressive too, and he can lay ink down like none other!

Alas, the itch for getting inked hit me hard. After a year of having that feeling dormant, I convinced a friend to get another tattoo with me. I've been wanting "Dolce Vita" as my next tattoo; meaning in Italian is sweet life and I think my life is pretty sweet. It was perfect in both representing me and being aesthetically pleasing.

As usual, I'm a stores worst nightmare, I never make appointments and hope that I'll be taken in immediately. I had several fonts printed out, so I was the first to go since my friend still needed to search for her design and print it out. Being taken upstairs, prepped and shaved, I wasn't too worried of the pain as he had tattooed my spine a year ago.

Was I wrong. It was painful! Luckily it's about an inch in height and six inches in width, so it went by pretty fast, but it was pain I don't want to endure again. So after my session, my friend found opted for a feather for her deceased duck. When my friend asked if he can shade and give it depth, he said he could. The outline trace was nice; all three were satisfied and went back up to tattoo my friend.

She dislikes it. To quote her words, "It's good, but it's not WOW". The presence of it being a feather was somewhat lacking. I liked it, but the essence was not captured; is another way to put it. She was somewhat disappointed paying 75 bucks, she actually wanted to spend more and go to another tattoo shop, but I reluctantly persuaded her to go Eternal.

If you're doing words, I would recommend going to Dan. If you're looking for shading and depth, I might recommend you try someone else.
