Dropped by this place on a whim when I was getting donuts at VG's. I had an older tattoo that I wanted to get re-colored. I checked the Yelp reviews and saw a lot of very satisfied customers, so I went over and asked about costs and so on. Dennis was free, so I set up an appointment for later in the day and came back a bit later. Dennis did a fabulous job of not only recoloring the tattoo, but also giving it a more modern look with a 3D look to it. It came out awesome, and really popped out more than it had ever done so in the past. Dennis was great, very personable and really applied his talent to making it look great. I will definitely be back to get some more tattoo at this place. I highly recommend both Dennis and Even Tide.
Review Source:Just have to say that Hagen is awesome!  Pretty much just walked in off the street and decided to get a tat here.  Was on vacation and wanted to permanently document my fabulous time in San Diego.  Took a risk for sure by not knowing anything about the shop or artist.  Was blown away by Hagen's knowledge of the art, his experience,  his professionalism, his dedication, and willingness to stay an extra 45 minutes past closing time to finish up my tat.  Plus, he was very engaging and had an excellent sense of humor.  Loved his interesting stories!  I requested an odd tattoo design, so Hagen gave me lots of good advice and helped me flesh it out...a panda chillin' under a palm tree on my right shoulder blade.  Not something seen in the wild ever!  But, I think of pandas and palms when I think of San Diego.  The best vacation tattoo!  Will always remember my time in San Diego!  And, I'm already planning another trip to SD, and I will certainly drop by to get more work done by  Hagen at Eventide!  Thanks Hagen!

Cool little shop with a killer view of the ocean, if you're fortunate enough to be in Billy's chair. Â Prices are super reasonable, too.
Billy's a good dude, easy to talk to and super patient. Â I will absolutely be back in the future for more work.
Oh, and if you do end up in the first chair, don't be too alarmed at the throngs of window shoppers that come and go, looking into the window and watching you get your work done. Â It's weird at first, but eventually you get used to it -- much like a cat at a pet store waiting to be adopted.
I first went it to Even Tide Tattoo a few weeks ago to see if someone there was willing to finish the half hearted celtic cross nightmare tattoo I had on my back. I had gone to another store off Rosecrans years ago and had an artist half heartedly begin my tattoo. For over seven years I have gone to different shops from IB to orange county in the hopes of finding an artist that I would feel both comfortable with but also an artist who wanted to tackle this project. When I went to Even Tide Tattoo, I knew I had found the right place. Upon walking through the door I was greeted warmly by an artist named Billy (who I found out later is also the shop owner). Â What a great first impression. The shop was clean and all the artists were very friendly, a far cry from most shops I had visited before. Setting up a consultation with Billy was easy and after conferring with him on some design ideas, we set up a date to get started. Needless to say, after four hours under the needle, I was f@#$ing THRILLED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He took a haphazard tattoo and made it a work of art that I am proud of. This man takes great pride in his work! I cant thank Billy and Hagen enough for being such upstanding indivduals and artists, they are both true professionals. If you are looking for a place with great artists that greet you with a smile and a hello, then check out Even Tide Tattoo. If you want to see the before and after, ask Billy and you will be amazed!!!

Billy knows exactly whats he doing, he has so much experience and such and amazing talent! Billy was recommended to us by one of our best friends who got a sleeve. He is GREAT with everything my husband got a HUGE tattoo on his leg to honor his dad and it had so many different elements and also had a Portrait of his dad which obviously is so hard to do but billy made the portrait better than we could ever imagine! I went to billy shortly after and got my last name on the top of my right foot and again billed nailed it! Even Tide is by far the best spot to get your tattoo work done. Â Scheduling time can be a little bit of an issue, but they work with you as much as possible.
I met with a dozen tattoo artists from almost as many shops before I selected Billy to start working on my tat idea. Â I envisioned a large project and it will take a lot of artistic talent and patience to pull it off. Â Most everyone I talked to elsewhere was too intimidated or wouldn't buy into the fusion of photorealism and traditional Japanese designs I was going for... but Billy was both professional and accomodating. Â And his artistic skills are unsurpassed. Â
For my first piece with him, I emailed him a number of pictures of the species of fish I wanted to portray. Â Billy did an absolutely fantastic job of fitting the fish to the space available, and creating a realistic looking impression of the actual species used as a model for the piece. Â We took a few artistic liberties with some aspects, but he discussed them with me first to make sure I was OK with his recommendations. Â He was right, of course, and his changes make the piece "pop" as a tattoo, whereas a truly photorealistic rendition would have lost those tiny details in the darker ink of the overall piece. Â In the end, I couldn't have been happier.
I will definitely be back to Even Tide for more tat work in the future! Â My only regret is that I live so far away (Northern CA) and can only get work done here once in a while. Â But I'll make it a point to visit San Diego just so I can get work done by Billy at Even Tide.

I wanted a tattoo for years in honor of my mom, but I never had a specific design in mind. Â I went to Billy first a few years ago at 454 Tattoo and gave him an idea of what I was looking for -- all the details about it I knew I wanted. Â The next time I saw him, he had come up with a beautiful tattoo that was perfect, and I am amazed he was able to design something from my vague description that I fell in love with. Â
With the design, he also managed to fix a smaller black-lined tattoo I had gotten years ago that I had been dissapointed with. Â He was able to make it fit into the picture without anyone knowing it had been a different tattoo. Â I also recently hunted Billy down at Even Tide so that I could get an addition to the tattoo in honor of my dad who passed away recently as well. Â Again, what he came up with somehow turned out to be exactly what I wanted and fit in with the previous design very well. Â Â
The place has a great vibe and Billy is a good person. Â I was impressed by the setup and Billy's awareness of keeping sanitary conditions. Â He would change his gloves every time he had to touch something besides his tools (such as shaking a leaving customer's hand) and used tons of paper towels during the process to keep everything clean. Â
Furthermore, the prices here are VERY fair and I am actually shocked they are not higher.
Billy has a great eye for artistic expression. Â He even continues to explore different forms of art in the time he spends away from his business because his art is a true passion. Â He is brilliant in what he does!
I have been wanting to get a tattoo since the day I turned 18 and was able to. I saw the reviews from people on here and my tattoo wasn't to complicated so I figured I could get it done by anyone really. I was a walk in and Hagen was willing to do my tattoo idea. I just got a quote on my left upper shoulder blade. I am so happy with the results. The lines are perfect. Everything is perfect. I'm in love with it. Thank you Hagen! Definitely coming back to get more tattoos in the future :)
Review Source:Billy has been  my tattooist for years. He is probably the nicest tattooist that I've ever worked with, for starters. He's mellow and respectful, as well as honest. He is also a brilliant tattooist, a real artist. I've given him drawings that I've wanted done exactly, I've given him rough sketches, we even designed one of my tattoos over the phone. In each case he knew exactly what I was going for, and made it perfect. I always carry around Billy's cards to hand out, because so many people ask me who did my beautiful tattoos. I even have friends from out of state (one even out of the country) that come here to get tattoos by Billy.

I had been looking for a special tattoo for awhile but things didn't work out with a couple other artists. I walked in told him what I wanted and he sketched something amazing right away.
