I had Randy Murray at the Flying Dutchman. Â I will tell you he is honest. Â He will tell you if something won't work. I would rather him be honest than just tattoo something that will look awful. I haven't been to any other artist in this place, but I would and will definitely return to Randy. Â He has a great personality and WILL call you a wuss if you twitch! LMAO!!! Â He's great! I would refer people to him!
Review Source:The Flying Dutchman is an amazing tattoo shop! Colby and his staff of talented artists do some of the best work I've ever seen! The shop is clean, the staff is helpful and friendly and the location is excellent! Plenty of free parking in a safe, very close lot in the old-town area! Tom Furey is our personal favorite as he has done multiple work on myself, my sons and several of our friends. Do yourself a favor and come see this incredible shop and it's talented staff! You'll thank me later!
Review Source:My mom, sister and I wanted to get tattoos and didn't make an appointment (we suck). Randy did all three of ours, in between other appointments, that day. The place is very cool looking, absolutely clean, and the experience was fun and friendly. He even busted out his phone to show us a great music video and was able to connect with all three of us regardless of age.
It was my first tattoo and I was nervous and twitchy, but it came out beautifully. I left the shading choices up to the artist and it's perfect. I may not be getting another (it hurt!), but if I did I would definitely go back and see Randy.
well the time i actually went here was back in 2009 but i never got around to writing a review and i dont know if yelp existed then. but the place was nicely decorated and clean and everyone that worked there seemed to have a nice family vibe among them. i was getting a tattoo on my foot and it hurt hekka bad so i was given a lollipop by who i assume was the young apprentice. i thought, this is quality customer service. and during the session i commented on the fact that it looked good so far and the tattooer smiled and said thank you. i thought that was cool because there have been times when i complimented someone for a tattoo and they had an attitude of like, 'duh i know it looks good'. Â so i recommend this place. they seem like cool enough people that listen to what you're looking to get.
Review Source:A few months ago I brought in a photo of Snow White and had Tom look at it. Â I wanted to add onto the photo so the tattoo had more design. When I came back Tom had it drawn out perfectly! He is very clean and professional. Awesome colors and shape to her. I am in love with her, and can't wait to finish up the arm! =]
Review Source:I had an amazing experience getting my tattoo done. Tom was amazing, was very friendly and chatted with me the whole time he was doing the tattoo. The Koi turned out amazing. I will be going back to have Tom finish up my idea for the sleeve and I will come back anytime I need ink done.
The atmosphere was very chill and the place was very clean. All of the other artists were friendly and polite, even the guy at the front was cool..
5 Stars for the DUTCHMAN!
Had a great experience with the shop and Greg. My wife and I stayed in the area from out of state and wanted a commemorative matching tattoo for our trip. As late night walk-ins, he stayed late, and we worked together to come up with a great design, did us both right then and there. On top of that the shop's owners went out and brought us back something to drink on their dime.
We have a lot of tattoo experience, and been all over the country, these people are aces!!! Thanks again Greg!!!
This is my second tattoo here at flying Dutchman and both times I've been very satisfied with the work done. This time my tattoo was done by Chris I told him what I wanted done and he went and drew it out for me and I LOVED IT!!!! He was hella cool nice and super clean I will definitely come back to see Chris soon for some more work!
Review Source:Great experience at this shop.
I had a very specific idea in my head about what I wanted done and GREG really listened to me and acknowledged everything I wanted. Â When I showed up for my appointment not only did he have the transfer paper done, he also drew it up and painted it for me to keep. Â How insanely cool is that?
He was very patient with me through out the session and even put up with my chatty boyfriend. Â The tattoo came out beautifully and I could not be happier with not only the art work but my experience at the shop. Â
Great job Flying Dutchman!! Â I shall return!
My friend and I both had tattoos done by Tom a week ago. Â This was my first and the fifth for my friend. Â We met with him a week prior to discuss the designs and schedule the appointment. Â When we arrived he had the artwork sketched out and was ready to roll. Â He explained the process and got to work. Â He is amazing! Â Very quick and efficient and the work is incredible! Â I couldn't be happier! Â My friend who has been to others for her previous work has said Tom is the best artist she's ever been to. Â The healing process has been much easier and faster than I had imagined. Â A tiny bit of peeling (like from a sunburn) but that's it. Â No scabbing. Â Ditto with my friend...the easiest healing she's ever had. Â Tom was recommended by a friend and I will (and already have) recommended him to others. I will definitely go to him in the future if I decide to add on! Â Everyone else in the studio was friendly while we were there!
Review Source:I'd give this place a 2.5 or so. I came here to get my belly button pierced.
I was actually supposed to get it done with a friend of mine but she couldn't get it done because she didn't have a valid license. What's interesting is that she called them to ask if it would be okay if she used her permit instead and the person who helped her said 'yes.'
She was also told that the whole piercing job would cost $24. This seemed like a good deal to me which was why I decided to get one too. BUT everything cost about $50+...was not happy to find that out after feeling like it was too late to back out of the piercing.
The people who work there are nice enough. The guy who did my piercing seemed very chill and friendly and I liked him but he was not as professional about informing me about how to take care of my piercing as Cold Steel America (on Haight) was. He wasn't as comforting about it either. He simply did his job and told me basic things.
I don't think I would go back to this place.
So...woe is me! This tattoo sucks! It has been almost seven weeks and it still hasn't healed. It literally looks like crap. I went to two other tattoo parlors and all opinions are that I was scarred by the artist that did it. Because I didn't know any better, I thought it was great those first couple of days, but the healing (or not healing) process has been horrid. It scabbed really bad and all indications are that she went to deep. My advice: if you're not comfortable tattooing someone, just say that!
Review Source:my hubby and I have both had a couple of tattoos done here, all by Leif, the owner. He is a great guy! The atmosphere is great, it's very clean, and everyone working there treats you like an old friend. I had a custom drawing by my mom, and Leif made it into the perfect tattoo for me, looks exactly like I wanted it to. My hubby and I both got matching tattoos on our backs, which were excellent as well. Hubby had an awful tattoo on his shoulder from his young and dumb days, and Leif covered it up beautifully. I highly recommend. I also have had a couple of piercings done there, but the piercer moved away, so I have no experience with the current piercer.
Review Source:WORST PIERCING EXPERIENCE EVER.
I can't speak for the shop as a whole, but DO NOT go to 'Cheyne' to have any piercings done, or even something as BASIC as a jewelry change. You'll know him by his Twilight-themed tattoo sleeves (which, in retrospect, had I noticed BEFORE he touched me- I would've never let him touch me to begin with. Twilight fans are morons.)
That's all I went in to do, change jewelry. I was in downtown Antioch and popped into their store on a whim to check out their selection. Saw some seamless rings I liked. They didn't have my size, so they special ordered them for me, said they'd be in by the end of the week. A week goes by, no call. I call in and they say it'll be another week before my lip rings are in. I would've just said 'forget it' and gone to GenRock but I'd already thrown money down on the order. Not necessarily their fault, mail could've been slow- but it absolutely didn't help the allover shitty experience I had with them.
They never called me like they said they would, so I stopped into the store after almost 3 weeks of waiting for my jewelry. They say Yes, in fact the order did come in. I'm referred to their piercer 'Cheyne' who takes me to the back area where we'll be swapping my current 16 gauge studs out for what was SUPPOSED TO BE two seamless 16 gauge rings.
He removes the studs, then proceeds to effortlessly insert two seamless 16 gauge rings. He tells me once they're in, that the diameter is too wide- then removes the rings again, says "Hold on a moment- we're going to try something."
Then WITHOUT ASKING MY PERMISSION- proceeds to force two -14 gauge- rings through my -16 gauge- holes. It hurt like a BITCH. Then he pinched them closed with pliers and left it at that. I ask why it hurt so bad the second time he inserted the jewelry, he gave me some bullshit answer about how they were still healing. THESE WERE YEAR-OLD -HEALED- PIERCINGS, PEOPLE. This guy was a moron, and a bad liar to boot.
I asked him why the jewelry looked so big... were these a 14 gauge? He said Yes, that's what you were pierced at! And I fervently said NO, in fact- I KNOW I was pierced at a 16 gauge. This was NOT my first jewelry change, and all my other jewelry was 16 gauge. He says "No, you weren't a 16- they look great."
At this point I just said whatever, what's done is done and I'm not going to irritate my piercings more by changing the jewelry again that same day. They were quite swollen for about a week afterward, and looked like they were possibly scarring. I left the jewelry in in fear that if I removed them, my newly healing STRETCHED holes would close up and be ruined by scar tissue.
Time goes by, and I have to remove my jewelry for work, so I decide to pick up a retainer. I go straight to Generation Rock in Concord because I know and trust their piercer, Brandonious. He notes that my lip looks very irritated, and starts to bleed when he removes one of the rings. I tell him my horror story of 'Cheyne' at The Flying Dutchman, and he says- "What a douche- not only were those the wrong gauge, they weren't actually seamless rings. All he did was pop out the beads from 2 CBRs and then forced them through your holes, pinched them shut, and didn't even close them properly. The seam shifted down into your lip and swelled up, then healed... HE LEFT THE JEWELRY WITH A GAP IN IT, WHICH CAUSED YOUR PIERCING TO CLOSE UP AND HEAL INSIDE."
The asshole WRECKED my piercings. I had to remove the jewelry completely, and the only option now is to let them heal and re-pierce at a later date- COSTING ME MONEY AND WASTING MY TIME. Thanks a LOT 'Cheyne', you DOUCHEBAG.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this studio. Everyone there is helpful, funny, happy and willing to chop it up with you while you are waiting to get your work done. Â The pirate theme is fantastic and the voice mail when you call is genius!!
I get my work done by Tom there, and I absolutely LOVE his work. He has always been good to me and done an amazing job. Â My most recent piece was for my cousin that was killed overseas in Afghanistan so needless to say, the tattoo is very important to me. Â Tom is the only artist I would trust with such an important piece. Â The outline is done, and the color is going to be done within the next week.
I LOVE THIS SHOP!!! :) Thanks to everyone @ Flying Dutchman!

This shop is amazing, great artists good prices and friendly crew. When you come to the dutchman you get treated like family, no shitty attitudes here.
