Two things about me: I have a hard time spending a lot of money on my hair, and I don't trust most people to cut my hair. It makes for a difficult time finding a good beautician. About a year and a half ago (I think) I scheduled an appointment with Elyse to chop my middle of my back length hair off. She cut it into a cute bob, which was great for a while, but then I went ahead and got a pixie, which is really what looks best on me. Shortly after I got a cut that requires a lot of up-keep, Elyse said she was moving to another state, and not as in Vancouver, WA. She recommended that Jessica take over my hair-cut requirements, and she was absolutely right. Jessica pays attention to my round face shape and listens to my whims, but at this point I just let her do whatever she thinks will look good, because she's always right. She's friendly and makes sure that all the details are right on. Plus she understands my under-lying cheapness and cuts my hair in a way that I don't need to get a cut every 4 weeks which is really great of her. The shop itself is very cute; lots of funky pictures and a great location. They also use all vegan products - big plus. The prices are reasonable, too.
Review Source:I love The Parlour. I've come here off and on over the years (when I moved out of St. John's I was going somewhere else for a while). I made an appointment a few weeks ago for a cut and color and was assigned to Caitlin, who was very attentive and asked a lot of questions about what I wanted. I think it can be challenging to find a stylist who really pays attention, and Caitlin was a great listener. The color she gave me was perfect - seriously, the best professional color I've ever had (and I've had my hair colored a lot over the years). Not only was the color exactly what I wanted, but the product she used was so gentle that my hair is softer and more manageable now than it was before the color process. I am looking forward to going back when I need a touch-up. :)
Review Source:This place is perfect. I went on a Monday morning, so I got some serious one-on-one time. My stylist, Bethany, is wonderful. I say 'is' because I know that I'll go back and request her when the time comes for a touch up or trim. I went from long-long hair to a chin-length bob and Bethany did a perfect job, even while I was chatting her up on Isabel Allende. Composure + professionalism + skills = best hair cut ever.
Review Source:I cannot remember a better haircut experience.
I was greeted with an offer of a beer - Session pale ale.
I then had a very professional cut that included a shampoo/rinse and a quick scalp massage.
Overall - very relaxing, excellent haircut (i.e. my wife likes it), great service. Â
I will definitely go back and highly recommend it to others.
I used Yelp to find this salon, so now I'm writing my first Yelp review! Bethany was fantastic. You could tell she really listened and worked hard to get your hair the way you want it. I have long, thick, course, curly red hair (not dyed but damaged from flat ironing). She did the impossible and gave me bangs that actually work for my hair! (and face shape). She managed exactly what I wanted and I'm so pleased with the results. I love my hair! Tons of compliments already. And only $50! I'll probably go back here for my first tattoo. :) Thanks, Bethany!
Review Source:Went as a walk in. They were very busy, always a good sign. Never had met Elyse before, didn't have an appointment but she offered to squeeze me in and I didn't need much done. She listened to what I wanted and did it perfectly, charged me accordingly. Was impressed how friendly and easy going she was in such a busy environment. Â There's also a cool Cure song with her name in it, added bonus. Will definitely go back when needed.
Review Source:I no longer live in Portland, but when I did I got my hair cut here a few times and I miss it now. I remember my hair smelling AMAZING after leaving each time. Does anyone know what products they use? If I can't get my hair cut here anymore I would at least like to use the same great-smelling products they use.
Review Source:Admittedly I'm a guy that normally cuts my own hair. I put the clippers on level 6 and don't stop until it's all even. Earlier this year after getting out of a long term relationship I decided what the hell, I'm gonna go get a big boy haircut. I'm 38 and could probably stand to look like a grown man from time to time.
Jessica gave me my first real haircut in over a decade, and she was amazing! I like my hair short. Really short. But she took the time to use real scissors and a variety of other trimming accoutrements that I had never seen before to make me look dare I say.....fine. She even trimmed my beard! Never had that before. Won't be living without it now.
Jessica was personable, professional, and really damn good at cutting my hair. And dare I say.....fine. Thanks much to lady Jess for helping me get my sexy back. Keep a monthly Friday afternoon spot open for me if you would be so kind.
I have to admit that Shannon has been cutting my curly hair for about 10 years now so this review will definitely be biased. I recently tried to mix things up a bit and get my hair cut by another friend. While she did a fine job, I just didn't get the usual tons of compliments from strangers afterwards. When it comes to hair it's really hard to dive into the unknown. I will say that I am proud of myself for trying something new even if it was just to remind me of what an artist Shannon is. This space is also by far my favorite that she has ever occupied as a stylist. I highly recommend.
Review Source:I went in with the intention of going back to my natural blonde hair color...except what i got was a fried frizz ball for hair and a brown in most spots blonde in other spots color. After freaking out I Â asked for my money back, they were very gracious and i went back to get my refund except i was only refunded the price of the "color" which was 50$! For the total hair fiasco i paid 115$. To fix all the horrible damage that was done to my hair is probably going to cost me even more! I at least expected to get a total refund. They were nice enough people but i will not be going back.
Review Source:I'm used to going to Supercuts or Great clips for haircuts because i didn't believe that hair should be an expensive thing to maintain. The Parlour St. Johns taught me the value of a pricey haircut, but for not that much money. I'm utterly in love with this place.
Getting an appointment was no trouble at all. Bethany ended up doing my hair, she was so friendly and helpful and she gave me exactly what I wanted, and even just the way she introduced herself made me feel really welcome and at home. The ambiance is really cool and laid back, their website is well put together and extremely professional, and I was just really really satisfied overall.
I don't think I'll be getting a haircut anywhere else soon.
I crave constant change, which proved to be difficult after deciding to grow out my hair.
One way to remedy this was switching hair salons to get a new perspective on an ever-changing vision.
"I'm growing it out, so keep the length... But make it look cool, and layer the hell out of it!"
Heather has been nothing short of pleasant to work with.
She has always been in a good mood and doesn't rush my indecisive self.
Prices are average haircut range: about $30-$40.
Plenty of 1-2 hour parking spots in the neighborhood.
Atmosphere is open and inviting, and the walls are full of interesting art.
I spontaneously made an after work appointment out if desperation. My hair and I have not been getting along for a long while. I was booked with Elyse. I felt nervous like. I was on a first date. Having a new person mess with my hair kinda spins me out. (i have trust issues with folks using sharp implements around my body).
I stammered a vague description of what I hoped would be a good style for me, all the while feeling ridiculous that I could not explain it very well. Elyse was great. She listened, asked a couple of questions and put me at ease that she "got it."
Bottom line: I like my hair again which means I have one less body issue  f*cking with me for at least a little while, and honey, I need all the breaks from self-loathing that I can get. I give 5 stars for that kind of hair magic!!
***Two weeks later postscript: Â I continue to have the BEST hair days! Â Even took my 18y old daughter in. Elyse was off so I booked her with Bethany. She did a great job and now my teen daughter is enjoying having stylish cut to play with after being bored with her hair for months. Â We will be coming back! Definitely worth paying a bit more....and be sure to check out their coffee table books. Â Awkward Family Photos is the best, funny laugh-outloud waiting area reading EVER. Â If you are waiting for your turn or a family member, take time to read it page by page. Def adds to the whole artsy, creative vibe of The Parlour which I instantly loved!
I went in on Easter (totally forgot it was Easter...) to chop my hair off. Elyse had a broken wrist and a broken ankle, so I immediately felt bad for making her work. However, she was upbeat and insisted that she really wanted to be back and was happy to be there. I had a couple of pictures and she went to town. I look amazing! My hair was super long, dead at the ends, and boring. I have it shorter in the back and longer in the front now; Elyse also showed me how to use a diffuser to bring out the wave in my hair. I never knew my hair could do this! I'm always nervous to get my hair cut short because, although it looks really great on me, some people can't cut my fine hair around my round face without making me look ridiculous. I will definitely be back and I may just run upstairs for a tattoo...
Review Source:I went in for a highlight from Jasmine on Monday. Â I LOVE the color of my new hair!!! She is fabulous. Â She had a very warm, confident and relaxed attitude. Â She took her time and made me feel very welcome. Â The decor of the studio is very cool as well. Â I would definitely recommend her to my friends.
Review Source:Thank God for the curly-haired community here in Portland! Â I was 8 months overdue for a haircut and didn't want to entrust my fluffy head to just anyone. Â Of course, I came to Yelp to find a savior and came across The Parlour. Â After searching for the curly-specific reviews, I decided I'd give Shannon a call. Â I was looking for a change and had been considering bangs but was terrified -- everyone who has ever cut my hair has strongly advised against getting bangs because "they NEVER look good" if your hair is curly.
The space itself is very cute: lots of art and adorable animal pictures on the walls...Portland, you know. Â Everyone seemed friendly, which surprised me a bit as I was expecting an edge of hipster attitude. Â Within minutes of arriving, Shannon came over to introduce herself and offered me drinks before starting to ask about my neglected curls. Â I noticed a variety of patrons in the salon, so that definitely put me at ease regarding my own nerditude and also the mad skills of the stylists.
Shannon and I chit-chatted like old friends as she got rid of my gross ends, and when I divulged my secret desire for bangs to her, she completely assuaged my fears. Â I'm so glad she convinced me to go for it because I've never been happier with a haircut! Â She totally captured the style I was picturing for myself, and even as my bangs have grown out, they haven't given me too much sass. Â And of course, the rest of my cut was also absolutely perfect. Â I will definitely continue to use Shannon as my stylist from now on.
I just moved here from the Bay Area a couple weeks ago. Found The Parlour on Yelp! and liked that they are so vegan friendly. I had my hair trimmed by Elyse the day before my first day at a new job and boy did it look like a million bucks. Elyse was great to talk to and totally understood what I wanted even though I am not so good at describing. I will be back in a few weeks for a touch up. Also thinking about getting a tattoo there...... we'll see!
Review Source:Sometimes I think about how far I'd travel to continue to have Shannon cut and color my hair if she moved out of state... I'd go as far as I needed to.
She is without a doubt the best colorist who has ever touched my hair-- and the sophisticated, dramatic, and beautiful multicolor creations she does are amazing. She has made me look the absolute best way I was ever meant to look.
My hair stylist recently moved, so I have been trying to find a new one. Based on YELP reviews, I wanted to try The Parlour. I thought the cut was nice when I left and I was very enthusiastic about having a shorter, summer-ready cut. At home, I realized there were sections that were long, particularly in the back. After five days, I now feel that my hair needs to be cut once again. To their credit, my hair is not the easiest and I am sure that daily they have many, many satisfied customers. I am bummed to not be able to give them 5 stars.
Review Source:I met with Elyse today for my first hair cut @ The Parlour. What an easy experience! I have thick, curly hair, and after reading the fabulous reviews for Elyse managing that hair type, decided to make an appointment yesterday. What a personal experience! Elyse is an active listener and was patient as I explained how I typically manage and style my curls. She then told me exactly what she planned to do based on my concerns from recent "scary" haircuts. I felt completely comfortable after that. The layers are looking great, and I have new life to my previous limp/dry/unmanageable hair.
The price for the hour plus Elyse spent on my hair was more than reasonable, allowing me to leave a little extra for tip. Thanks Elyse! I'll be back!
hey shannon. Â saw you monday? cut off like 10 inches. yeah, me. Â i LOVE my haircut.
i was a little scared. Â not to cut off the length, but i usually ask for precision haircuts, no point cutting, no razor cutting. Â this time i just let shannon do what it is she wanted to do to give me the haircut i asked for. Â at first i thought it looked a little johnny depp. which is great for johnny depp, but not so much for me. Â but i trusted, let go, and it's perfect! Â i've gotten lots of compliments, but i don't even care--the point is i love it and feel great. Â
so thanks!
After reading some great reviews I made an appointment with Elyse. Â I walked in with a vague idea of what I wanted and left with a great low-maintenance haircut 'cuz I'm a low-maintenance chick. Â I had been straightening the life out of my hair, but she cut and styled it in a way that shows off my natural curls (she complimented it, too, and Lordess knows I'm a sucker for complements).
The overall vibe of the place was pleasant and relatively casual, the decor was cool (a lot of the art was done by staff) and I got zero 'hipper than thou' attitude, which is rare in this town.
Oh, and she gave me wine. A+
I had Elysse cut and color my hair, and when I left the salon, I loved the color, so I thought I was happy. However, a few days later, I tried to straighten my usually curly hair and realized she had totally cut it very uneven. One side had a section that was more than an inch longer than the pieces around it and it was completely uneven in the back. My husband said I shouldn't wear it straight, that's how bad it looked. Very disappointing.
UPDATE: Â Shortly after I posted this, the owner contacted me to offer a refund or to fix the cut. Â I didn't need either one, as I mentioned, she did a great job on the color, so as long as I wear my hair curly and pulled back, it is ok. But, I did appreciate this follow-up and the concern, that scores huge points in my book, so I'm changing my review from a 2 to a 3.
I just got the best hair cut I have ever had from Heather at The Parlour. Â Thank you Heather for taking your time and for being a true artist at your craft. Â Also, two months ago I had an awesome hi light from Nikolos. Â These people are true professionals. Â I highly recommend The Parlour.
Review Source:My hair is a bit of a ratking and I came in to get my ratking untangled and trimmed by Nikolos. Â Who gave me a cute simple do that looked like the better end of Mariska Hargitay's haircut roller coaster. Â
I don't do it justice and wear it up a lot and I still don't brush it. Â Sorry.
Comfy place mostly because of the people element. Â The walls could use some editing, but the natural light couldn't get better in this place.
I was extremely disappointed in my haircut outcome here, since there were so many positive reviews. I thought it would be a sure thing.
Everyone was very friendly, no problem there. The problem was the haircut I left with.
I booked my appointment with Elyse. I was open to her suggestions on a style to go with. I mentioned that I didn't want a chin-length bob. Unfortunately, that's what I ended up with. When I got home and really checked out my haircut, the back was much shorter than the front and looked like chunks were taken out. The sides were uneven and it looked like I had one haircut in the back and an entirely different haircut in the front. There was no connection between the front and the back.
I thought about going back for damage control, but was too nervous to try it again! I went to another salon and spent more money to repair the damage. I also ended up getting a lot more length removed in an effort to fix the bad cut.
UPDATE 2/5/11: I received a very nice phonecall from Heather apologizing for my experience and offered to refund the money for my haircut. I thought it was a very nice gesture on her part. Received a check in the mail yesterday.
I also followed Elyse (this is the third salon I've followed her to), and my favorite location so far.
Elyse is fantastic! With the most general of directions, she always cuts my wavy, funky hair perfectly. She also takes the extra time to make sure everything is perfect and lays just right. I really appreciate that attention to detail.
I initially wrote a review soon after my experience here. Â I took it down because I felt bad afterwards when the owner refunded my money due to my horrible experience. Â All of the reviews for this place are exceptional so I felt that I needed to say something for other yelp users out there that summarized my experience.
I just moved to Portland and after hearing much about this place and reading the reviews, I drove here from SE Portland to get my trimmed (on my birthday). Â I specifically scheduled my appointment with Elyse due to her experience with curly hair. Â I have curly hair that I sometimes wear straight. Â I had gone in asking for a trim to cut the dry ends on my current hair style, which I loved and didn't want to change. I even had photos in hand.
First of all, I was only scheduled for 30 mins with Elyse, when it should have been longer. We talked about curly hair as she was doing her thing. Â I walked out with curly hair, which was fine, but it wasn't until I got home and examined my hair to realize that she didn't cut the dry ends at all and there was a chunk cut out of the back. Â I was quite upset to say the least. Â After a day of debate and tears over what I wanted to do, I called the salon back and spoke to Niko.
Niko offered to have me come in that day and he would fix it up. Â Niko was very nice and seemed to know what he was doing. Â I felt confident that I was getting the trim that I initially asked for. Â With a quick inspection, I thought that my hair was fine before I left. Â But again, it wasn't til I got home and looked in the mirror that I realized that the right side was a full inch longer than the left. Â In addition, the right side was also layered while the left was all one length. Â This put me over the top. Â
Apparently the owner was there on the day that I saw Niko for damage control, but I didn't know it. Â She had called me after my initial review and apologized for the problems that I had. Â Apparently it was a unusually bad experience. Â She offered to have me come in and fix my hair a third time, which didn't make sense to me unless I wanted no hair left. Â So she offered to refund my money. Â I have since received the refund. Â But it doesn't change the fact that I had a horrible experience, which is why I felt the need to re-post something.
I thought that maybe it would start to look better after some time had passed and my hair adjusts to the cut. Â I thought that maybe I was imagining things or over-exaggerating until a few days ago when a makeup artist/hair stylist friend asks what happened to my hair and agreed that it was a shoddy job. Â And the worst part is that it's going to take several months for it to grow out so that I can have an even haircut again. Â And so much for that all-one-length hair style that I had and loved so much. Â :(
You should come out of a salon loving your hair and feeling confident. Â Well, two weeks has passed and there isn't a day that passes when I don't feel angst for this salon when I look in the mirror. Â I hate my hair.
The only reason I am giving this salon 2 stars is because everyone is friendly. Â However, I will not be going back.
Let me start off by saying, I nearly don't trust anyone with my hair. Â I was going to the same stylist for years back in Ohio, then I moved to Portland and didn't know anyone. Â I've gotten a handful of cuts from places people recommended, Dosha, some other Aveda spots; but was never truly happy until I decided to try out The Parlour's Miss Elyse. Â Elyse is a rock star at cutting hair, always consistent and fun to talk to at the same time. Â She's been doing this for years and it shows with her stellar cuts. Â I won't go anywhere else, Elyse has won my rapidly growing hairs' heart (figuratively speaking). Five stars all around =)
Review Source:I followed Elyse here from another salon. I remember calling the other salon and *freaking out* because they said she had moved on...right after I had just found her! Luckily they were nice and told me where she went. *Yay*
I have naturally curly hair and it is very hard to find someone who does curly hair right. Elyse does. She is super accommodating as well. I can be finicky about my quirky hair and she is totally patient while I futz with it...trimming as needed.
And you know how us Portanders are. 5 Miles away feels like 50. I drive to St John's from "close in" NE Portland just for a haircut.
I waited a while before writing this review because I wanted to see how my hair settled into its new cut and color, and now I feel like I can honestly say this is the best cut I've ever had. I went to Shannon, who apparently specializes in curly hair, and it shows. My hair is actually curlier with this cut than it used to be because there's none of those random straight bits anymore; somehow she cut it in just such a way as to make it all curl. The shape is fantastic and it looks good with almost no work in the morning.
One thing I really appreciated was her willingness to suggest a fairly radical change when I told her I wanted something new but didn't know what. In the past people have seemed reluctant to stray from whatever my standard is, which I can understand, but Shannon was confident enough in her abilities that she went ahead and suggested I get short, cute bangs and an unusual shape. And it paid off; I never would have thought or been brave enough to ask for a cut this different and it's the best cut I've ever had.
The color is excellent, too. Just subtle enough while still livening up my hair. And there was tons of awesome art on the walls to look at while I was waiting for it to take.
As much as I love this cut, I'm already excited to go back and see what she comes up with next.
Time for an update!
The Parlour is pure good-smelling awesome. Jamie has been doing my hair for over a year now, and I love her more and more every time I go in. She's patient and gentle and sweet and funny and most importantly, in this line of work, extremely talented.
The Parlour in St Johns is the kind of place that if I ever moved out of Portland (hey, it could happen) I would probably schedule my visits back around Jamie's schedule at the Parlour. Serious.
If you can't get Jamie, don't fret, everyone else is super nice and does a super job. And if you're feeling super sassy, you should probably go ahead and get a tattoo upstairs while you're here.
I found this wonderful hair place from Yelp; Elyse is very popular! Â I made an appointment with her as a new Portlander. Â I was worried about finding a person who knew exactly what I wanted, Â based on my horrible descriptions of the picture in my head of what I wanted my hair to look like. Â And I found her!! Elyse is amazing. I managed to find one grainy email of a hairstyle I liked and Elyse ran with it and made my hair look even better than the photo. Â She somehow knew how to transform my hair into a curly masterpiece, when in actuality it is sometimes frizzy, sometimes sort of straight. It even looks good when I try to style it myself! Â I am so excited about finding this gem of a place so close to Portland. And Elyse! Â She is perfectly laid back and unpretentious. She is a fellow animal lover, which is an added bonus. I can't wait for my next haircut to see what she comes up with!
Review Source:I looked this place up for my mother, and while she wasn't thrilled with its out-of-the-garage look at first, she's definitely sold on getting her haircut by Niko for the rest of her life if she can manage it. In addition, my brother (in his 20's) had been looking for an Ivy League haircut and finally found Niko to do it for him. So he was a happy camper.
Apparently Niko prefers cutting men's hair, because in his experience he used to have a really hard time finding a good haircut. All their products are vegan.
Also, they offer beer and wine while you get your hair done.
Okay, Nikos is amazing. Â The Yelpers are right. Â He listened to what I wanted, then told me about my hair and face shape and what would work, gave me the best cut I've had in 41 years, and then told me how to take care of it without having to spend a ton on stuff to put in my hair. Â Completely great.
Review Source:Oh how terrified I was of "wedding hair." Â But I also didn't want to look boring. Â Jamie created a look that was simple and me, but also really special and elegant. Â I felt beautiful and comfortable all day! Â When the night was over, my hair still looked as beautiful and effortless as it did at noon. Â So perfect!
I can't wait to go back to Jamie for my regular haircuts!
I am dude, looking for a good haircut, it is hard to find a good hair salon that is good for guys...I found Nikos...my man hair cut cost me 30 dollar....Great Hair cut by Nikos,.... he is a hair god, very friendly and helpfull and detail...I appreciate his help....
He has advance hair skill he spends his free time taking advance course in hair in Santa Monica...so this dude is up to the trend..I don't know if I should annouce this, He might get to many clients!
WOW.. This place is so different from the normal salons.. very Portland chic, earthy hip. Late 60s decor all about you.. but most important was the person doing my hair. I felt like an art project instead of a head of hair needing a cut. Â She stated she wanted to open up this part of my face and wanted to free the curls that have been hiding (my words there).. and just really gave me a good looking over. I felt extremely taken care of. It was quite the different and wonderful experience. I did not have to wait but a few days to get in either which is really amazing. My hair was cut and colored differently but so that I did not have to add a million products to it to make it look the same as when I left the salon. Â The products are vegan/green as well. According to their website they are donating their hair to the oil spill. Â Looking forward to my next appointment!
Review Source:I called into the Parlour and made an appointment with Heather. I explained what I was going for and put my trust in her, hoping that she wouldn't disappoint. And she definitely did not. Not only did she make my hair more manageable, but she cut it in such a way that requires little to no styling. I can literally wake up and go with no muss, no fuss. She was very interesting, easy to talk to, and struck me as a really cool person. The salon itself is full of visually stimulating eye candy as well. There's tons of artwork & collages on the walls to gaze upon while you're getting the snip.
My only outcry with this place is the price, hence the 4 stars. Call me cheap, but  paying 45 bucks plus a tip is just too damn much for a haircut. And if you tip well then you can add another 10 bones to that. When I can afford it, I will definitely go back and show support for this wonderful local business that reciprocated my patronage with a really snazzy new do. It's months later and I'm still satisfied with my haircut so that counts for something, it just doesn't make it any easier to afford.
i move a lot and 2nd to church shopping, i absolutely hate stylist shopping. Â i haven't had good experiences in portland finding a stylist i like, until NOW.
i figured since they had such great reviews already, i'd give them a try -- the 10% discount from yelp for elyse didn't hurt either ;) Â the atmosphere is very portland-ian with the artwork and vintage feel to the small, but cozy space. Â
all i needed was a trim to keep my long locks healthy and elyse did just that. Â no pushiness, no off-the-wall suggestions of what to do with my hair -- just what i asked for. Â the italian organic and vegan products smell amazing too... will definitely be back!
Do yourself a favor and go see Nikolos. Â He's amazing.
I love getting haircuts. Â It's probably one of my favorite hobbies in the whole word. Â However, since moving to Portland a few years ago, I've been getting bad haircuts-- and I mean bad. Â I've gone on yelp and picked highly rated fancy salons thinking they must be able to give a good precision cut. Â Nope. Â I came out with early '90s dye jobs and weed whacked fringe. Â I would stop people on the street and ask where they got their haircut and it was always a bust. Â I polled my fellow SF to Portland transplants thinking they, of all people in this town of frump, would understand my criteria for a good hairstylist, but to no avail. Â It got to the point where I was cutting my own hair and that can never be good. Â So I was a little scared when I made an appointment to see Nikolos at The Parlor...sight unseen...to get all my hair chopped off. Â Thank you fellow yelpsters for FINALLY leading me to an AMAZING HAIR STYLIST!!!
Nikolos was incredible. Â He took my boring straight, long 'do and gave me a super hip Karen O-esque asymmetrical bob. Â Now, you might be thinking, oh dear, I don't want that...but you have to understand that someone who, within 45 minutes, can conjure up an avant-garde yet still manageable style for someone who hates having to do anything more than hop out of bed in the morning has some pretty refined razor/scissor skills. Â He took his time, made sure I was happy with his vision, and made the whole experience really fun! Â Plus, he has excellent taste in music.
If you don't believe me, Â check out his blog:

Are ya searching for a creative and knowledgeable colorist/stylist that will work WITH you to create the perfect look EVERY time? Â Just ask for NIKOLOS...he's your man! Â He's not satisfied until you are with creating and maintaining the look that fits your style, even as it changes! Â Thanks NIKOLOS!! Â See you in a few weeks and let's see what mood I'm in =)
Review Source:I realize some people may be a little thrown off by my recent spate of five star reviews. Never fear - I haven't lost my edge, I've just been lucky to have found a slew of wonderful places I'd previously missed.
I recently turned 25 and, in the name of special occasions and having one day a year where I get to be the center of attention (which forcing it), wanted to fix my well-cultivated sheepdog aesthetic, meaning I had to see a hair stylist and FAST. Unfortunately, the lovely girl who usually cuts my hair was booked until after the eve of my festivities. Thanks to recommendations from Janessa P. and Lid C., I called the Parlour and got a perfectly timed appointment.
The parlor itself, while a bit difficult to locate (St. John's - at least that one intersection - totally stumps me), is adorable. Small but well-laid out. I was frazzled when I got there after working late, fighting traffic, and running through a deluge. But my stress melted away when I stepped inside and was greeted warmly and handed a beer. Please and thank you!
The next 45 minutes were a complete joy! My stylist, Nik, listened carefully to my detailed instructions ("not TOO short in front and less mullet-like, please!") and gave me a haircut that yielded a night of being nearly assaulted by compliments and frequently manhandled (by friends! Never fear!) Nik might be the most adorable boy in the world, too - and it never hurts when your mane is in the capable hands of a fellow Taurus who relocated to Portland from the midwest.
Although it's a little far from my apartment, I can't shake the residual glow (and buzz?) that I had from my appointment. I'll be back again and again for more delightful conversations with Nik and significantly reduced chances of being mistaken for your favorite sheep-herding canine.
Ok. Â I feel like I can finally review this place. I didn't want to immediately give it a lot of stars then want to take it back after a day as I did with my Bishop's experience.
I have had a haircut and a bang trim and my girlfriend has went in for a haircut as well.
People in Portland have issues with calling me back (jobs, hair salons, etc). After being recommended here by Lid C., I decided to make the trek all the way out to St. Johns. Â I e-mailed and received an appointment that same day. Â I arrived frazzled after 2 buses, but it was worth it.
Shannon was my stylist and she is great. Â We chit chatted about life and my hair, and I left with a haircut that I love. Shannon suggested that we cut my hair in this way that worked for me the first time so that she as more acquainted with my hair the next time. Â I appreciate the honesty (my hair was growing out from a BAD cut and I didn't know exactly what I wanted). My bangs lay VERY well and some folks seem to have difficulty with them. Â I went back for my free bang trim at the same time my girlfriend went in for her hair. Â Again, she was friendly and accommodating and did a great job.
Shannon is great with bangs AND curly hair!! My girlfriend's hair is short and very curly and people really have a difficult time with it. Not Shannon. Â She is amazing! Â She was able to complete the funky hairstyle that my girlfriend has asked for in both Portland and San Francisco salons. My girlfriend looked cute and was very happy with herself when it was over for 40 bucks.
Thanks Shannon for being friendly, loving your job, and for displaying that you can cut a variety of hairstyles! Â We will be back. Â I also have enough confidence in you to recommend you to everyone.
P.S.- The salon is cute, they use vegan products, there is street parking, they offer you tea.
I hadn't cut my hair in over a year so today i decided to try out The Parlour. I was hesitant at first (it was suggested by my dad) but when I stepped inside it was extremely relaxed and full of young hip people. I had Nikolos cut my hair and I love it! I highly recommend this place to everyone. It is friendly and a nice change from the snobby, gossipy place I went before.
Review Source:Oh. My. Yes.
For anyone who knows me, they are aware of the importance of my lengthy locks- it's my signature and my attribute. I love all the long hairs on my head.. so much so I didn't cut my hair for about one year.
Last night I went to sleep feeling my hair ends and realizing- one year is just way too long. They felt fried.. almost like steel wool and scraggly.
I finally called this place and whined in a voicemail about my need for a new cut. Within an hour Elyse (who is now my her-o) called me back and I had an appointment set for 5:00pm, and I made one for my bro because his hair was just as ratty.
I walked in with tons of photos and she discussed with me everything I wanted. I realized I had to release at least an inch and a half of hair because it was just damaged.
I was in love when she washed my hair with this amazingly wonderful scented product and then whipped out the razor to finish the cut. A slight blow dry and some wonderful conversation later- I looked at myself and I loved my cut. My hair feels and looks great.
My brother was the same story, it matched the picture and he finally looked clean and wonderful... he was so happy he kept looking in the mirror on the way home and touching it. Happy teenager = good hairstylist.
Again, Elyse finally released both my brother and I's fear of stylists... (after some really really bad trips to hairstylists).. and is great, happy and observant about what you need for your hair.
Yaaay!!!
Have you guys smelled my hair? It smells *amazing*! Seriously, take a whiff. It's heaven!
I am so madly in love with The Parlour and their hair products and Jamie, my fabulous stylist, and the fact that it's all vegan and well, overall I am downright giddy to have found a salon and stylist that I LOVE! My hair looks and feels fantastic and last time it looked great for over 3 months, which is always the sign of a good haircut. I am simply thrilled to be supporting a vegan business but really it's all about looking good and feeling good and thanks to Jamie, I'm rocking both the look and the feel as I type. I'd love to write more but I gotta go smell my hair some more. So GOOD!!
I got a fabulous hairstyle and lots of compliments. I was on a short trip to Portland and decided to visit a hairstylist, and went on yelp and found the Parlour. Elise stayed late to work with my schedule as I was flying out the next morning. For $45+tip I got a cool layered cut that suits me perfectly.
The salon itself looks like a loft space with garage doors. It is next to a pizza place that was a converted gas station with old fashioned pumps outside. There is lots to look at inside the salon with all kinds of outsider art covering the walls including some works by Parlour hairstylists. They don't advertise but they keep busy all through word of mouth.
So I'm 25 and the same lady has been cutting my hair all my life. Sadly, she's in Seattle and I seem to be in Portland for the long haul...after a year and a half (and a overpriced trim at Bishop's) I decided it was time to cut off my poor overprocessed hair.
BUT WHERE TO GO!?
Oh hey Yelp, guide me please! And you did, as usual, help me to a good place - and that was the Parlour. I was able to get a next day appointment and the only thing left was the actual style I wanted. I showed up ready for Angela the next day who greeted me warmly and had me in the chair within a few minutes of walking in.
I had a picture to show her but she also discussed what I wanted and took a look at how my hair...laid or whatever to ensure the cut would actually work with my hair. She was friendly, not overly chatty and efficient. And - she cut my hair with a razor. I LOVE that, makes my hair behave loverly.
I was in there less than an hour, got a fabulous haircut and it was reasonably priced - actually about what I paid at Bishop's (with all their damned add ons, which is absurd as Bishop's is basically Fantastic Sam's with Portland hippish-ness and NOT worth it after I've gone here).
I feel like Dorothy Gale. After several unsuccessful years searching for a cool and affordable haircut, it turns out I never needed to look further than my own backyard. Shannon knew how to interpret my creative instructions *and* how to work with my curly locks. There truly is no place like home!
Review Source:Heather has never failed to be anything but awesome! She's given me tips on how to manage my super thick hair. She even talked me down from a near disaster, pregnancy-hormone-induced-get-rid-of-all-of-it hair crisis. She's easy to talk to, has great taste in music, and is just an all around swell gal! You're missing out on something great if you're not going to Parlour!
Review Source:I was visiting from out of town and needed a 'do for a filming I was doing the following day. Jamie not only accommodated my crazy schedule, but gave me an excellent hair cut and style. Her cutting style is super fantastic and the atmosphere in the salon is great. I highly recommend Jamie. Â The fact that the salon is vegan-friendly only made the experience that much better. Â If I could manage to travel to Portland every month or so to get my hair done by Jamie, I would...next time I'm in town, I'll be sure to book an appointment!
Review Source:Yay, yay, yay! Yes, another 5 star review for The Parlour. I'm not sure if I stumbled upon the Parlour throug Yelp or just the general web - but when I found their site, I decided I needed to try this place. I've lived in Portland over a year now and hadn't found a place to get my hair done. Back in Tucson, a dear friend of mine was my hairdresser - so it was hard to get out there and start looking again. My appointment was with Jamie - she is wonderful! It's nice when a stylist uses their artistic vision to give you a one of a kind hair-do. Â I really am happy I decided to try out The Parlour. Â Wonderfully sweet stylists, a relaxing a non - salon feeling ambience and french guys singing Elvis over the stereo - oh, and a wonderful hair cut/color to boot! I couldn't really ask for a better experience. I have found my new salon home.
Review Source:Caveat: I haven't experienced the tatoo side of things at the Parlour yet, but I'm a huge fan of their hair cutting and styling. Jamie is absolutely fantastic--the husband and I love her work and are so glad we've found her. I think the prices are very reasonable (Jamie's $25 for a men's haircut), particularly considering the talent. The salon is, as I'm sure you've read, cruelty-free, vegan, and most of their products are Portland-made. They send hair clippings off to help clean up spills of nasty things and such. And it's a really great space--the art alone is worth checking out.
Review Source:I cannot style my way out of a paper bag. This is Portland. We spend 317 days out of the year hidden under coats and sweaters. So your head is the most distinguishing characteristic you have. It is very important to sport a killer head o' hair. So I needed something that was feminine, messy, and manageable.
Miss Heather took very special care of my very special head. She struck a perfect balance between listening to my idealistic view of what I wanted my head to look like, and working with the reality of my fine hair, cowlicks and overall style. Err. Lack-there-of. And the space she works in is completely without that creepy sterile salon feel (or the trying-too-hard-to-be-hip barbershop) The inker upstairs is an incredible artist. So the walls are covered in his pieces, as well as some from a personal collection. Oh, and no weird *unsh-unsh-unsh* tunes or elevator music. Good stuff. In fact, I think they stole my iPod.
I get so many compliments on my new coif. Housemates and coworkers dropped jaw. After a few weeks, it still wears well. I call my new style the "Joan from Mad Men, after women's lib when she quits Sterling-Cooper, moves in with Don Draper's mistress from season one and gets a job at a coffee shop in the village."
O.K. So I've been having my haircut for nearly 60 years now as I traveled from Portland to Florida, from California to Canada, to Mexico and everywhere in between. Heather is the best stylist I have encountered. I lost my hair about 4 years ago and when it came back in, it was a different color and texture than it was before. I didn't know what to do with it, which is nothing new... I've really never known what to do with my hair. Heather seems to have a sense about what works best with my lifestyle, age, hair type, etc. I would recommend her without hesitation to anyone.
Review Source:The first time Heather cut my hair, she was in the middle of splitting the business from her ex, and the business was still called "The Wandering Hare" (with the world's cutest sign). I was drawn by the sign and the artwork, as well as the location (a few blocks from my house); Heather was available for an impromptu haircut. I inadequately defined what I wanted; my hair ended up a little shorter than I was comfortable with. Heather refused to charge me. Over the next week, I got more compliments on my hair than I ever had in the past; I returned and paid Heather, over her objections. I've never looked back, as I've consistently gotten meticulously-crafted, highly-skilled haircuts; I'm better at defining what I want, these days, and Heather always achieves perfection. I'm impressed with Heather's ethics, and the test of a good haircut, I've found, is how well it grows out -- I consistently fail to show up when I should, but my hair is always great, at any length. I'm delighted that Heather's my neighbor!
Review Source:I like The Parlour! I have been to Heather 3 or 4 times in the past year for a cut for my ridiculously thick hair. I have been super stoked about the cut every single time. She is great about listening to what I want and cutting my hair to work with the way it really is... rather than trying to make it something it isn't. I'm not much of a hair styler, and I won't spend more than 15 minutes on it, shower to walking out the door, so I appreciate that she doesn't cut it into something that is going to take me an hour to style. Other bonuses: vegan products that smell good and are good for the earth, the scalp and neck massage I get in the shampoo bowl, and the tips she gives me on how to work with my new hair! I always feel a bit cooler when I leave the Parlour and get tons of "who cuts your hair??" from friends co-workers and random strangers. Good work Heather.
Review Source:I have really thick hair. Â Most stylists seem overwhelmed by all of it. Â I usually sit down in the chair to "wow, uhm... okay... so you have really thick hair." Â I've endured more bad haircuts than I care to say. Â I get edgy when I hear the word "layers". Â
When I arrived for my appointment I told Heather what I wanted and that I wouldn't do anything to style it. Â She listened to me and really understood what I wanted. Â Heather gave me the best haircut I've had in a long time! Â I had an excellent experience and would highly recommend trying Parlour.
