After spending days researching for a safe environment to get my daughters ear pierced (in a place that was NOT the mall with their guns) my husband and I finally settled on Koi.  The shop was clean and professional.  Patrick was amazing.  Yes, to a  6 1/2 year old the piercings hurt badly but he had her calmed down and laughing in mere moments.  She was giggling as we left the studio and still talks about how funny he was almost a month later. Â
Her ears look fantastic. Â He took the time to make sure that the hole was properly placed and looked even. Â They are healing beautifully with no infection. Â I would definitely send anyone there for piercings. Â Especially those with kids who want their ears pierced.
This was the first place I went to get pierced over two years ago when I got gauges. Loved it ever since! All the people are super nice and it's a really clean place.
I've gone there for almost all my piercings and to the same piercer. They are really good and telling you when to expect the initial pain and breathing, they don't trick you. I like that they use hollow needles and are always sterilizing and changing gloves for everything. I've never felt unsafe in there.
The price is a little high end for SLC. They are comparable with other piercing studios and a littler higher for tattoo/piercing places. They're jewelry is a little expensive but they have the coolest stuff and a large variety and selection, more so than most places
I went to KOI to get pierced after reading reviews on yelp, I drove an hour to get there, and I am very happy I did. The shop is clean, the rooms private, and all the employees were super nice and helpful! DJ answered all my random questions with a smile and my industrial turned out great. I will be back, and will tell everyone to get their piercings at KOI!!
Review Source:I've had my earlobe pierced (second piercing on earlobe) and an industrial piercing done here. I was surprised at how painless they both were! I believe the girl who did mine was Jenn, she was very good.
The place is very clean and the rooms are very private. My only con is the price. Piercings are expensive! I spent around $90 to get them done, sheesh! But I guess that's standard. I would recommend family and friends here.
Koi is AMAZING. It's the only place I have had piercings done in SLC and I really don't feel the need to even look into other studios. The people working the front desk have been very helpful and friendly both times I've gone in, the tribal decor is very cool, and the glass cases of beautiful, unique jewelry provide plenty of visual entertainment while you are waiting. There was somewhat of a long wait both times I was in, but I totally understand...it's a very busy body art studio with limited piercers. I feel much better about waiting for a bit knowing that the employees are taking the utmost care than if people getting pierced were just in and out super fast, perhaps with sub-par work. The first time I was in was to get my lip jewelry switched from a ring to a stud- the lady who did it was very gentle and advised me that wearing a stud in it would reduce the swelling and help it fully heal faster because wearing a ring introduces more bacteria to the piercing. The second time I went in was to get my left nostril pierced, I'd had the other side pierced before at a different studio and had to take it out because I got a huge ugly bump next to it that would not go away and the piercing never healed...but at Koi the experience was significantly less painful and it healed normally and quickly... an experienced, professional piercer makes all the difference!!! The guy who did it (wish I could remember his name, he had some lines tattooed on his nose) was kind and easy to talk to, we joked around a little and it was a great experience overall. Koi is a clean, friendly, awesome place to get pierced. I wouldn't go anywhere else.
Review Source:I'd heard good things about Koi for years. I finally decided to find out for myself when I decided to have my right nostril pierced a few months ago.
Walking in, I felt right at home. Portraits of tribes across the world hung on the walls, an ode to the history of body modification. The 2 staff members at the front desk were friendly and helpful. I was asked for my I.D. and signed the paperwork. While waiting (there was a group of girls ahead of me, which is typical for a Friday evening), I took some time to check out their merchandise.
There are 5 glass cases, all filled with beautiful jewelry, most of it being for stretched earlobes. Upon asking one of the employees about the material of a few pieces, he told me everything I wanted to know and even took them out of the case for me to hold.
I see many reviews written by people who were pierced by Patrick, but I believe my piercer's name was Jen.
The piercing itself took less time than my wait. Jen took the time to see where the stud would look best for my nose shape, and marked the spot with what looked like a toothpick. She asked whether I liked the spot, which I did. When the needle went through, my eyes watered, but it wasn't too painful. Putting in the stud was a little rougher, though. She handed me a hand mirror so that I could admire my new body mod. I thanked her and was on my way!
I paid about 65 for the piercing and jewelry and tipped her 25. I went home, feeling like a rockstar.
A week or so later I went to a party, and after a few too many Jager Bombs, I woke up the next morning with a closed nostril piercing and the stud had disappeared. I called the studio and they gave me some advice, which was to wait a few weeks and then to come and have it done again. Money down the drain, yes, but a mistake I won't make again.
So, after a few months, I went in and Jen did it a second time. Just as well, and this time with a different kind (one less likely to fall out).
If I have ever have another piercing I'd like done, this will be the place. Clean, professional, and the kind of place I feel at home.
ALSO, they're honest! While picking out my jewelry the second time, I pointed to a pretty piece that I liked. The girl at the counter let me know that it was 78 dollars, and I was quick to choose a cheaper piece.
Alright, I caved. Don't you go judging me!
I wanted to get my upper ear lobe pierced since I've already gaged my ears. I originally wanted to go to Iris, because I had sworn off Koi years ago. My dad told me that he knew a piercer at Koi, and that I should check him out. I was appalled that my dad knew what Koi was. He continued to tell me about this piercer, who turned out to be DeeJ. I caved and went to Koi, just to get my dad off my back. My dad came along so he could talk to DeeJ while I was getting pierced.
DeeJ was incredibly nice, and was meticulous while piercing me. He double, then triple checked everything he did. He didn't care that I cried a little bit, and he remained professional the whole time.
Koi was out of the diamond that I picked, but he promised that he'd order it and have it to me in a week. He was super cool!
After my piercing was complete I went out to pay him, and he refused my money. A piercing at Koi costs $15, and the jewelry can go from $32 to $75. He gave me all of that for free, and even included a bottle of cleaning solution.
I highly recommend DeeJ to everyone who wants to get pierced. We'll just say that my original review was for Patrick, and that this one is for DeeJ.
I can't believe I let almost a year go by before I reviewed Koi!
I had my ears pierced at 18 by someplace in the mall like Piercing Pagoda. The holes came out uneven, lopsided and whatever cheap-ass earrings they used...my ears refused to "take" earrings. When I wore hoop earrings, they stuck straight out! Needless to say, I really did my research before going to get my helix pierced. Because of all the great reviews, I picked Koi.
Unfortunately, the day I went to get my piercing, a big group of teenage girls also picked Koi. They were really annoying and took up all the room in the small{ish} waiting room. After selecting a little labret, Patrick took me to a very clean room and pierced my ear.
I told him I was disappointed it didn't hurt as much as I thought it would. I'd waited a long time to get this piercing done and really pumped myself up and...it took about 30 seconds and I didn't feel a thing! My ear was a little sore until about now, but my ears really just don't like piercings and helix piercings take a very long time to heal due to the comparative lack of blood flow.
At one point, my piercing site was pretty irritated and I called Koi back to ask them what was wrong. They told me to stop touching it and it would go away. How did they know I was constantly playing with it? I followed their advice and lo and behold...my earring looks great, feels great and I'm seriously contemplating another piercing when I get back in the States.
The only piercing shop I trust. Everyone there is FANTASTIC, but my loyalty lies with Patrick. Every piercing/stretch he has done has healed perfectly, even the one he had to re-pierce for me (I strayed once, NEVER AGAIN). Great jewelry selection, great staff, great prices. They'll order anything possible in for you. Very clean and comfortable. They are not at all snooty to n00bs in the piercing world :D
Review Source:Went back to Koi to pick out a second pair of earrings for my daughter. Â DJ was there (much to my daughter's delight) to help us out. Â He explained how to change the jewelry and then proceeded to do it...for free! Â We of course tipped him, but the fact that Koi doesn't charge for its follow-up services. Â It is just another reason to love Koi (in addition to the fact that my daughter's ears were never infected...not once). Â Then to go even further, DJ let us know to come back right away if I had any trouble putting the earrings back in after my daughter's soccer games. Â Koi is still (and most likely always will be) worth every penny.
Review Source:Okay... I'm not into piercings. In fact, I don't have any piercings (unless you count the one earring hole that never closed from 20 years ago). That being said, If I were into being pierced, I would get pierced at Koi.
The store is clean and cozy. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. Their selection of guages, earrings and other body jewelry is large and varied. There is lots of cool stuff and the prices are quite reasonable.
Okay I am weird but oddly enough (heh heh) I am not the most "alternative" sorts of people. All I got are ear piercings-no tats, no nipple rings, no horn implants in my skull. I like to keep it simple. So with all that being said, going into this place to get just a couple extra holes in my ears, with my skin looking so virginal and fresh I could have gotten the vibe that I was in unfriendly territory and come away feeling like a total square. Not a chance. This place has got "cool" and "friendly" in spades and was absolutely inviting. Most informative, enthusiastic, and damn helpful staff EVER! The selection of jewelry is gorgeous and intriguing and comprehensive. I got my 4 extra pierces without anesthesia-which was interesting-but my piercer (an out of towner friend covering for one of the staff) was totally professional, calm, and cool. And about a week or two later I got a follow-up call from one of the staff who wanted to check up on me and how my new little holes were doing! See? Damn helpful. Fantastic experience and amazing place. Should I ever decide to poke some holes in other body parts I'm totally checkin in here again!
Review Source:I've had 4 piercings (2 ears, 2 body) done at Koi and every experience was extremely satisfying to me. They are clean and friendly. The jewelry selection is more than adequate for me. They are knowledgeable in what they do as this is the only thing they do. This is particularly important to me because I'm very worried about infections and rejected piercings. I would highly recommend this business.
Review Source:In conservative Salt Lake City, Koi is the perfect place to experience a little counter culture served up with a lot of class and good karma. The array of exotic wooden African and other ethnic piercing accoutrements is gorgeous stuff--even if a little extreme for most. Since my wife was going for a playful navel piercing, they made our first time experience professional, helpful, clean, informative and friendly--not only a great experience from the cool staffers, but also the various nice customers populating the shop, eager to talk about what piercings they've had done. (Wow! Nice to meet people so unguarded and friendly.)
When shopping around for a piercing studio, everyone we talked to said Koi is the only place to consider (even employees at other places selling piercing jewelry). The rates are fair for the piercing itself, but the jewelry is a touch on the pricey side. (Total navel piercing, after tip, was a little over $100.) Considering how well stocked, and nice of ambiance the place has, it's worth it to buy the jewelry to make sure these owners stay in business. Â We're told they stand behind the quality of their jewelry, something not every studio does.
While we're a bit too middle class to join the ranks as frequent piercing customers, I'd add our experience to the many other hearty word-of-mouth reviews we received: if you're getting a piercing, and you're anywhere you can make the trip in to Salt Lake, choose Koi. The parking is not the greatest, and they don't take credit cards without a surcharge, but you'll enjoy caring and professional service, a cool and eclectic bunch of customers, and, if you leave a tip for your piercer, you'll walk away with a bit of good karma, too. (I didn't know karma is for sale, but hey, I appreciated the playful atmosphere anyway.)
Take THAT, stuffy Utah mainstream culture!
