Steve Wetherington is unreal. Â He did my most recent and while there made 3 more appointments. Â His online portfolio at the website does not do his work justice nor give one an idea of just how incredible his artwork is. Â And being the incredible artist that he is, he is in high demand. Â So plan on making an appointment several months out into the future.
One thing that I really like about Mad Ethel's that is different than any other tattoo shop you walk into is you will not find any flash on the walls. Â None. Â Zero. Â Everything is custom. Â Sure, you can walk in with a picture and say "I want this" and thats what you will get. Â But don't do that. Â Let Steve's brain come up with the design off your ideas.
Steve also works in a fashion different that my previous ink. Â Previously a short consultation had been done, ideas kicked around and a couple basic, rough drafts of what I wanted were done up, and then a final design was ready and waiting when my appointment came. Â That isn't how Steve works.
Here is how my appointment went down. Â I came in, having not spoken a word to Steve yet in advance about what I wanted, or what my ideas where. Â He asked "What are we doing today?" Â So I said I like skulls. Â Not cartoonish, but on the realistic side, with a touch of evil. Â Something like a Pushead piece (the guy who does a lot of Metallica's artwork). Â He thought for a minute and told me to come and lay down on the table and started shaving the area.
No stencil. Â No paper drawing in advance to look at and tweak. Â Honestly, this freaked me out at first. Â After he finished shaving the area he got out some markers and just started drawing on my skin. Â Unfortunately for me, it was in a place I couldn't see, so the nerves were just amped up. Â "Whats he doing back there?" Â But my wife was with me and would walk over from time to time and take a peak. Â I finally asked her to tell me what was going on. Â All she said was "Don't even look, just let him do it and then look when he is done tattooing. Â You are going to love it." Â When he finished his marker drawing I got to look at it. Holy Sh*t! Â
I could not be happier with it. Â With my having given him very little, and I mean very little info. Â Pretty much just skull, semi evil, and Pushead he was able to know what was in my brain that I didn't have the ability to convey to him as to what I wanted. Â He nailed it. Â Perfection. Â And the little detail items in it that there was no way to know would be there from his marker mock-up are the icing on the cake. Â I keep finding little things here and there that just blow my mind. Â
If you want a killer tattoo, I suggest Steve at Mad Ethel's, and to just go in and tell him you want X, Y, and Z, let his brain connect the dots and he will produce exactly what you are wanting. Â Its spooky. Â Its like he can read your mind without you saying a word.
I can't wait for my next 3 appointments to get here. Â And I am sure more will be made while I am in the chair at those.
I just came back from getting a matching tattoo with my daughter. Â I have never gotten (or even wanted)a tattoo before, but my daughter has been asking me for three years to do this with her. Â I have also never written a review about any business, but wanted to share my experience at Mad Ethel's.
We walked in with no appointment and with a Living Social coupon and were able to get our tattoos the same day, even though they were really busy(and overheard Steve say he was booking now for end of May appointments). Steve, the owner, fit us in between his appointments since our design was pretty simple. Â He did a wonderful job with the drawing, doing exactly what we wanted. Â Best of all, after, he said the coupon we had was all we owed. Â I was shocked he didn't charge extra. Â They are very clean, friendly, very fair in pricing and best of all, wonderful artists. Â I don't plan to ever get another tattoo, but if I do, I will definitely go back to Steve
