Like a dumbass, I decided to get a tattoo on a whim (well, sort of). I decided on Mercury - as I was underwhelmed by the price/service ratio of parlours on South Street.
I strolled in to take a look and make an appointment. I was greeted by a nice guy who told me that all the artists were booked for months, but he could do my tattoo like, right then. For all I know, he was a crackhead off the street. Like a dumbass (x2), I went for it.
I freaked out (and nearly passed out) in the chair, but my tattoo artist was super cool and offered me a soda to balance my blood sugar. After a few minutes, I was done. For a great price, I got a great tattoo that hasn't faded a bit. Despite the excruciating pain, I'm planning to go back for tattoo #2. I'll definitely be going back to Mercury. If you can make the trek to Glenside, I highly recommend Mercury.
Random: I'm somewhat comforted by Carrie E's review that mentioned someone named Brian, as I'm pretty positive that's the guy who did my tattoo.
OH! If you're cash-phobic like me, you might want to hit the ATM beforehand (there's a PNC 1 block away). They were cash only when I went.
I've gotten some great ink at Mercury! Scott is such a nice guy (no attitude whatsoever) and very talented, and Brian and Rich have great portfolios as well. Mercury also brings in awesome guest artists from time to time (I've been tattooed there by Ollie XXX from Montreal and Rob Hunt from Asheville, NC) who are just brilliant. Can you tell I love this place? It's got a cool vibe, nice artwork on the walls and big, comfy couches to hang out in while you're waiting. Book an appointment now because it's super hard to get in with these guys, but trust me - it's worth the wait.
