First off, let me say that my review is not based on the work, but for the treatment I received here. The work is SUPERB, some of the best I've ever seen. 5 stars for the work, two stars for the shitty attitudes and unprofessionalism of some of the staff.
I met with the owner, Phillip, who was very nice and professional. I saw his book and really wanted to get a tatt from him, as he is an AMAZING artist. However, he had a waiting list of over a year long. He recommended Jessica to me and I called her to book a consult. She didn't return my call for 3 weeks. When I went in, Jessica had the sketch of what I had in mind and it was lovely. I was excited but put off by her cold, unfriendly attitude. Â She explained shop policy, that I had to put down a deposit. Okay, no problem.
I went and got the money out and came back to set up an appointment. Jessica would not tell me her availability until I signed a form stating that I was now responsible for payment regardless of whether I got serviced or not. WHAT THE HELL. When I protested, she finally told me that she would be out for 3 months and that she'd get back to me when she could. So what the hell am I paying for?! I didn't like her attitude and I totally understand having a deposit and policy so people don't flake, but she was so rude and her obvious unwillingness to work with me was downright insulting.
The artist here are truly that, but if they don't like you don't expect to be treated with respect. It's a shame because I love the work but I don't want my artist to be like, "Pay now and I'll hit you up when I feel like it." Not a great way to treat clients.
I use to have a little place called Zoey's next door and I got to know these guys. Â I got a tattoo on my inner arms from them, and it happened to be there one year anniversary. Â This is way overdo compliment, but I love this shop, loved the tattoo they gave me and LOVE their energy. Â Amazing artists. Â My cousin, sister and friends also were clients after. Â I love telling people to go there. Â I'd love to get another tattoo from them one day. Â Amazing artists!!!
Review Source:Been thinking about getting a tattoo for a while but have been a bit shy since my first and only tat I describe to people as an ankle tramp-stamp that I got in college. Â So I checked Yelp - of course - and found Old Crow. Â It's just a mile from my house so I figured why not? Â Man am I happy I did!! Â I walked in and introduced myself to the first person I saw, an artist named Chris, and I proceeded to explain to him a design that I kind of sort of had in my head but wasn't too clear about. Â He listened and worked with me and made the most amazing design ever!! Â His line work is superb and the tat came out better then I could have expected. Â I wanted primarily black and gray but didn't want him to use white to make the gray. Â I asked if he could water down his black instead and he said yes. Â His skill is amazing.
In addition to being a fantastic artist he was an exceptionally nice guy. Â Very calm and thorough in explaining to me what I need to do to care for my new art. Â Everyone that worked there seemed to get along very well and the place has very good energy.
Super friendly, professional, clean, and just an outright pleasant environment to be in. Â I'm definitely going back to get him to cover up the tat I got in college 20 years ago.
This place was amazing! I'd highly recommend it. Went here to get some additions done to an existing tattoo. Chris did the design/consultation and tattooed it on the same day. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the results :) Each artist has their own style, so if you have something in mind, you can ask in advance who would be best. The location is great too, right by the lake and very easy to get to.
Review Source:I came here soley based on the recommendations off of here. Â I saw a guy named Sean.
At first I had thought I wanted a cover up and when speaking with him, his tone showed me that he did not think this could be done. Â So we moved on to a hybrid tattoo. Â I provided the deposit and made the appointment and was ready. Â His free hand drawing seemed like it would be a great fit.
When I came back on my scheduled appointment date, I waited an hour before he acutally got me back there and began prep work. Â We had never discussed an official price, and when he told me what he wanted to charge me I was shocked. Â As most of my tattoos were three times the size and cheaper but I took this with a grain of salt as detail can cost a little more.
As I have many tattoos, I felt he had a pretty heavy hand. Â I'm not sure if he is new or not, but I think a soft touch goes a long way.
In the end the tattoo came out good....I think there are some detail issues that I will probably go to someone else to be adjusted....I also would prefer to talk money up front, so I am not shocked as sit in the chair.
I really wanted to like this place more as I have some many more ideas and tattoos I want to get. Â But I think I'll go back to one of my other guys.
Old Crow is an incredible shop. I recommend it to anyone. I design tattoos as part of my business as an independent artist, and I send people here.
I also get tattooed by Philip Milic (owner of the shop). He has a very long waiting list, and trust me, it's worth every minute of the wait. The best thing you can do is remember that tattoos are a process, and sometimes the wait is a necessary part of the process.
Each artist in the shop specializes in their style, but they also have versatility, and quality of workmanship that is pervasive. I recommend finding the artist that best fits your style.
Philip's style is beautiful, impeccable linework (thick and thin), bold designs and symbolism, with a great eye for composition and complementing the body form. He can tattoo damn near anything (he's done designs on me that other tattooers couldn't dream of pulling off), including realism and a painterly style, but given the choice he'll do the decorative linework and (old school, non-trendy, REAL) tribal designs. And with a long waiting list and amazing portfolio, he has the right and the ability to be choosy. He's also not just a technician, he's a true artist. If you give him some license with the design, he WILL make it better. He's also good about listening to what you want . Consider it a collaboration and you will get the best results. His 'bed-side' manner is excellent - considerate, professional, good conversation if you want it, thoughtful, wise, and just a warm and loving soul in general.
The day of your session, remember the whole 'it's a process, the wait is worth it thing'. Due to the nature of tattoos, things may not start when you expect them, and they may take longer than you anticipate. The worst thing you can do is be in a rush, and rush your tattooer. Chill out, clear your day/evening, and go with the flow. Then again, this is true at pretty much any shop.
I was tattooed for the first time @ Old Crow and it was a great experience! I had the pleasure of working with Sean and he was so professional and made me feel really comfortable in the shop. He was also really willing to work with me & modify his design/script to accommodate my preferences.
The shop is super clean & has a rad vibe. I also LOVE my tattoo & if I ever get another one, I'll be returning to Old Crow. Highly recommend this place.
I've been getting tattoos for a long time now and have a lot of them. I have some amazing ones that I love and people compliment all the time, and some other ones that I get laughed at for but F it I love them all!!
Anywho I went into Old Crow Tattoo because I heard of their great reputation and I knew I had to try it out!! So when I looked them up online I saw that Ciara was an apprentice (which ment that she was cheaper! Bonus because she is AWESOME!!) she has really detailed lines, realistic style and specializes in black n grey (black n white? Iono whatever),but she was so super cool and so nice about all the tats I wanted to get. I got 3 tattoos from her over the course of 2 weeks one was of a black n white sugar skull that I gave her ideas of what I wanted and she went with it and F-ing nailed it to the T! Then I got (now don't laugh) a picture of a revolver on my index finger with the word 'bang'. It is awesome. She placed it perfectly and when she touched it up later it is now perfect (when it healed the first time is definitely said 'ba g'... Haha so ingot it fixed) And the last one I got was of a quote on my butt that says 'money talks bullshit walks'. Also badass and I love the font she drew.
Overall review synopsis they were all super awesome tattoos and Ciara was so nice and professional and totally had a handle on what she was doing and how it would look best on me. I would recommend her to any one! But get to her now while she's still cheap (sorry Ciara I mean it in a good way!!) because once people start recognizing her talent her prices will skyrocket because she's so Mother F-ing good!
A word of advice to all people getting tattoos in general. If u are I a rush, don't plan on getting a tattoo. You will be there either all day or at least for about 3-4 hours depending on what ur getting. So if ur in a rush it will rush ur artist and u will feel stressed which is no good combination for anyone. Know what u want, know how to communicate and understand that if u don't like what they did its ok to say no. No one wants a bad tattoo and I'm sure the artists don't want to feel like u dont like what their tattooing on u and they just won't care as much and no one wants that. So please to all those people who don't understand the concept of what tattoos and tattooing is all about just remember, treat people how u want to be treated so no one turns out to be a bitch and u get a great tattoo, OK?!
Ciara thank u for some badass tattoos that I can say are some of the best on me! I love them and will be returning to ur shop soon for some more!
Thanks sugar bugger!
I had my tattoo done by Jessica, and she is beyond amazing. Its my first tattoo ever, and she made the experience, from beginning to end, wonderful. She listened to me and went above and beyond to give me the tattoo I wanted. The shop itself is awesome. Everyone is very chill and laid back, the gallery and music is candy for the eyes and ears.
Review Source:This has become my favorite tattoo shop in Oakland, thanks to this guy name Stewart Daniel! Stewart and I go way back, when he first did my tattoo at his old shop, Telegraph tattoo. I really love my first tattoo done by him, thats why after a few months, I went back again to him for my second art. This time, it was a bit complicated tattoo because it was my own design. Stewart was very patience on how detail oriented I was. He was also very honest about if my design works or not. In the end it became a colaboration of our design. I also love all the conversation we had while he was tattooing me. It was never a dull moment! But sadly, Telegraph Tattoo had to close and Stewart and I lost our connection.
Back to Old Crow Tattoo & Gallery, sometime in 2011, my brother in law was browsing online and for some reason found picture of my tattoo online, the one i design with Stewart and it was posted on the website of Old Crow Tattoo under Stewart's Art! Since I found my favorite tattoo artist, I decided to get another tattoo from him. As usual, Stewart was very patience with my third tattoo because it was yet another complicated one. This time we did it at Old Crow.
Everyone at Old Crow is very friendly! From their reception to all the tattoo artisits! I remember when Stewart was tattooing me, every artist basically stopped by his station to say hi and chit chat a little bit. I love how everyone is flexible with their schedule and how everyone is eager to work with clients on how they want their tattoo. Recently, my best friend from NY was in town and wanted to get a matching tattoo on a random day! Honestly, we went to at least 10 shop in San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland and only Old Crow tattoo has open spots! So we drove our ass to Old Crow and got our ink done! Unfortunately, Stewart doesnt tattoo there anymore BUT i found another great guy with the name if Sean! Sean was very welcoming! He was very opened to what my crazy bestfriend wanted to get. He was also fun to talk with and he even knew my fave artist Stewart! Another great thing is, a few people even recognize me as Stewart's customer even though I havent been to the shop in forever! Great memory guys!
More amazing things about this shop? They are clean, they are located in a nice area, they have a gallery which is always fun to walk through, they have guest artist who are all awesome, and can I just reiterate, they are very flexible and willing to work with detail oriented clients!
I would totally come back here if I decided to get another ink!
My tattoo artist retired recently and Chox @ Old Crow was refereed to me. So we set up a consultation and that went really well, Chox was very easy to talk to and listened to what i wanted and said he would draw the design up and email me it within a few days, when he sent me the design it was awesome but i wanted a few changes which he was happy to do.
This week i went back to Old Crow, which is a pretty awesome Art space / Tattoo studio with lots of room for the artists to work, I think while Chox was tattooing me 3 other artists were working their magic on clients so the 'buzz' of tattoo guns was almost louder than the music playing (which i happen to love) Chox was very professional making sure i was comfortable at all times and asking if i wanted some water. when the Tattoo was finished it looked amazing and the fact it means so much to me, it was instantly my favorite tattoo. Â
Everyone I spoke to at Old Crow was friendly and cool and you can bet I will be back !
Outstanding place, clean, welcoming, with very nice people.
Sean was my artist, he did a wonderful job with my robin tattoo! He was very professional, returned my calls promptly, and seemed genuinely enthusiastic about my design.
Everyone I met at the Old Crow was helpful and courteous, I would recommend this place to anyone wanting to get work done, you definitely get a quality tattoo!
Also the art gallery in the front is always cool to look at!
I recently started my first 3/4 sleeve tattoo with Joseph Realubit and I have to say it is turning out to be an amazing work of art. Â I went with Joe since his style of work is similar to the design that I had in mind. Â Joe is an extremely creative and talented artist and his design way exceeded my expectations. Â I would highly recommend Joe for developing a unique design and his precision for applying the tattoo is flawless.....definitely 5 star work!!!
I also want to add that everyone that I've met at Old Crow has been super friendly and helpful. Â The crew there is very chill and all seem to have a great time and enjoy what they do. Â I would definitely recommend anyone looking for a tattoo in the Easy bay to visit Old Crow.
Pictures of the new tattoo will be posted when completed and I can hardly wait!!!
"Is that your Truth?" she asked me.
I just got tattooed by Ciara today.
--- hold on to your boots, it's a long one! ---
First off, I've been stopping in at Old Crow on my daily route for a few years now. I will often have a stop-and-chat with Terry, who is a lovely soul and a bomb-ass curator.
Over time, I got to talking with Ciara, asking her about her tattoos about a year or so ago (+/- a couple months.) Â Ciara's tattoos are beautiful and unique, done by Philip Milic, and as I learned at the time, Ciara was beginning her apprenticeship. I asked why she had them, and the answer I received surprised me, as I didn't really know anything about tattoo or tattoo shop culture.
She said that as an apprentice, she felt that she couldn't tattoo people without having undergone the experience herself.
That may be a super-basic "duh" for most people, but for me it was very thought-provoking. (I'm sure there may be more to her tattoos, but that is her story, not mine.)
In June of 2012, I started wanting a swallow on my arm.
I had an idea of how I wanted the design to look, but not quite.
I started encountering Ciara's art more, and I was charmed by her feminine style and use of fine lines, as that aesthetic appeals to me.
Ciara and I started speaking and encountering each other more frequently, and in January, I proposed this project to her - a fine-lined swallow, to show movement, to be feminine and elegant, to show dynamic energy, to be decently faithful to the main points that I love in the long-tailed swallows - the long tails, the wings sweeping back with long tips, but to avoid the potentially awkward moment that occurs in the  head/breast area of the bird. Also, I didn't want shading or color, and I wanted stippling to create texture.
Yes, I am a Virgo, why do you ask?
Ciara started nailing it right out of the gate. She drafted a few designs, which we discussed, what I liked, what I didn't, what I wanted changed, and by the third drawing, I said "I want this on my body!!!"
Here is what impresses me about Ciara:
She has got old soul wisdom in her youth.
She also has a sense of humor, well-applied. Â
She is skilled at communicating about art, her needs, the client's needs, what needs to happen.
She is professional.
She is patient. I had her re-draw the design more than just 3 times. We were at 6 or 7 re-draws before I settled on what was to be my tattoo (which for the record, was drawing no. 3). Â
She is still patient! I had her place the design more than 7 times today, to get it just right. There was one placement that was almost perfect, but not quite. Â My desire for the design was that it be hidden when my arms were at neutral. A tiny bit was poking out and I could see it. I didn't like the effect.
We had been placing and erasing for at least half an hour. Â My skin was tired. Ciara was probably sick of my persnickety precision. Â But she was cool, calm, and professional throughout it all, doing her level best to explain the process and the art of it to me. Â
"Is that your Truth?" she asked me, when I expressed my desire to have it be totally hidden.
I said yes, and she nodded. Ok, she got it. She'll do what needs to be done.
From January start to February finish, Ciara gave me her opinion on the drawing and the placement, what she could do or not do, and how it would affect the look of the tattoo. In other words, she brought her experience to bear throughout our meetings, and as I am not a tattoo artist, nor anatomist, I damn well appreciated it.
Once I was on the table, Ciara's bedside manner was calm and concerned. Her touch is light and she knew that I was going through pain. Â She checked in with me about my pain and energy levels. She consulted me on how the tattoo was looking.
All in all, it was a very professional, interactive, collaborative process from start to finish. Â
I recommend Ciara totally.
I have a beautiful piece of art on my skin, my body, the most personal thing I own, for all time, and I am totally comfortable with it.
Thank you Ciara!
---
Yes, the studio is super-clean, everyone is super-gloved (changing them often, as needed), and the massage tables one lies upon or the chairs one sits in are quite comfy.
Ciara also does unique flash, will take walk-ins, and I'm sure that lots of people can get work done a lot quicker than I had it move forward!
Contacted this place on 11/23/12 to see if they can do a tattoo w/ vegan inks.
Received this reply on 11/28/12:" yessss we do. thanks for the interest, feel free to leave us a description of the tattoo your looking for and I can recommend some folks for the work. Terry"
The same day, I reply saying I want some art deco flowers.
Terry replies the same day she can put me on Philip's waiting list, then recommends Jessica and asks for my phone number. I reply the same day and don't get a reply until I email again asking what's up on Jan. 13. On the 19th, I get a reply from Terry saying Philip's wait list is 10-13 months long. I ask what Jessica's is and am told on 1/21: "Jessica's wait is much less at about a month or soo. But she'll get you in for a consultation within a week  or sooo.Lemme know if you'd like me to have her calll you otherwise your on the list. Thanks again Terry"
On Jan. 30th, I ask to be put on Terry's wait list only to receive this email on 2/13/2013:
"sorry but Jessica really isn't interested in doing a vegan ink only tattoo. she very specific on how her tattoo's look and her material choices in applying them.
Sorry about that. I'm also pretty sure philip feels the say way as he uses some vegan inks (better yet inks that happen to be vegan) and some not.
thanks for you interest Terry"
Super unprofessional. How about checking with the artists first to see if they'll do a vegan ink tattoo before telling potential customers yes and then wasting 3 months going back and forth?
PS- If you're looking for a tattoo with vegan inks, try Diving Swallow instead.
My daughter knew Ciara from school so we were able to get an appointment with her for both of us (apparently because of the popularity of this place, it takes some time to get an appointment). My daughter was getting a poem on her side (ribs) and I was getting lilacs on my leg (in honor of my mother who recently passed). Ciara was amazing! She is a super talented artist and she worked with both of us to make sure the designs we each wanted were just right. And that's how they came out - the work was beautiful! Ciara was professional, very mindful of making sure everything was clean (the whole place is very clean and sanitary) and so warm and friendly. I/we will definitely be back!
Review Source:A big Thank You to Chox from Old Crow Tattoo. Chox has been inking my chest for a couple of years now and I have always been impressed with his intricate design work and attention to detail. Folks who see the Aztec designs on my chest have commented on how detailed his work is. Chox is a very professional and  easy to work with. I really appreciate that he takes his time to make sure that each piece comes out right and never feel rushed when I am getting inked by him. Most importantly I really trust Chox's artistic ability and know that I will leave every visit happy with his work.
Old Crow is a really chill and friendly place to go. The studio is very spacious and clean and they have a small waiting area. When I showed up I was greeted by someone who was working in the gallery which I thought was cool. I've been to places where folks act like your invisible. I strongly recommend for folks to check out Chox and Old Crow Tattoo.
So, I live right down the street from Old Crow but I've found that any time you spot someone in the bay with stunning art when you ask them where they got their work done, its often Old Crow.
They are not only an innovative art gallery that enriches the culture of Lake Merritt, they also are a consistently friendly and welcoming establishment. Basically they represent everything I've come to love about the East Bay.
That said, I finally got around to getting tattooed there last weekend and the experience was thoroughly enjoyable, professional and fun.
Chox, my artist, had such a light hand and his fine line work was beyond impressive. I honestly can't stop staring at my tattoo.
This is my first tattoo in the bay (I have a full upper back piece and several others from NY) and I can't imagine trusting any another artist or shop to tattoo me in the future.
Old Crow First of all very clean top to bottom Thank You!!
My very first experience with them was with the owner as a guide to recommending a tattoo artist there which lead to Sean who i will speak about with content and respect soon... cause i have spent a fair amount of money covering up shoddy work, brought on by arrogant artist who won't listen or have bad ideas that I let myself be convinced into like a schmuck.
(And everyone isn't better if they are High or tore up don't work on my body fucked up please..NO and I still have some shoddy work to prove it.)
**The GOOD~ Sean~He's professional excited about his work, talented drawer has certain artistic abilities he hi-lights like Birds..Why,movement,color,abundance of breeds. It also will cover my poor past work beautifully.
Sean has been willing to work with me I've been a Bear when it comes to detail and communication its important in any artistic venue,I will pay for what I LIke this isn't arrogance its now my experiences over time and time again of bad hurried shit work, and not researching or getting proper referral(s)
I look forward to seeing Sean soon and to give continued positive review of him and his work.
(Also this is just a note, you can be hip,fun.cool. whatever  And you still can be professional treat yourself and your clients as a business Guess what its ok.
Best. Tattoos. Ever. Â Siri and the rest have inked me and the ink gets props everyday. Â And then you add the stylin' art that is in their gallery and it just does not get any better!
I have referred two friends so far and they are lovin' their ink, too. Â I'll send anyone photos of my ink - just ask.
I went to Old Crow for my tattoo in August. Â Siri did my ink and she was awesome. Â She was super busy tattooing all the time, so I had to wait several months for an appointment with her, but it was worth the wait! I drew my own design of a mendhi style embellished Filipino flag. Â Siri perfected my design and worked on me for 4.5 hrs with minimal breaks. Â Everyone that was working there that day was cool, and one of the guys even offered to by get me a snack from the convenience store when he went out. Siri was professional and fun to talk to. Â Her work is top notch. Random people stop me on the street to compliment my tattoo. Â Tattoos at Old Crow are a bit pricey....but I'm of the opinion that with tattoos you get what you pay for. Â Mine was definitely worth the price and the 4.5 hrs of pain for a beautiful piece of body art. Â Thank you Siri and Old Crow! I'm already designing my next piece....
Review Source:This is the best tattoo I've ever had, and definitely the cleanest and most interesting (the gallery is pretty awesome). It's appointment only and there can be a lengthy wait. Also, keeping in touch with the tatt artist Jessica seemed troublesome. She lost my number and sent me an email that wasn't meant for me. A little spacey. And when I showed up for my appointment she was unprepared and took 20 min setting up (yeah, i was looking the clock--she was charging by the hour.) And I paid for two full hours but she only did one hour and a half's work, not including the set-up time. That was a bummer.
The tattoo is beautiful and I get compliments all time. But its just so expensive to pay by the hour and not be ready for the paying customer. Either way, it's worth the price but it will be awhile before I can afford to come back.
Old Crow is the bomb diggity! Â I feel blessed to live in Oakland where such a dynamic and unique art space exists. Â The owner Philip Milic is super nice & an incredible artist, though I have yet to go under the needle. Â The art curator and manager Terry is an all around awesome guy who is very knowledgable about all the artists he represents and his enthusiasm for them and their artwork is truly infectious. Â Whether you need a tattoo consultation or want to learn more about the ever-changing art gallery, Terry is warm & personable, eager to engage you, making for a very welcoming.visit. Â I would have to say this.is my favorite artspace in the bay & you will never get bored because Old Crow keeps it super fresh. Â With the awesome energy created every month by the different art, as well as the community who is drawn to it, Old Crow's friendly & intelligent staff who are clearly passionate about what they do keep you wanting to come back for more. Â If you haven't already checked out this Oakland gem, you are in for a real treat.
Review Source:Hands down, best tattooing experience I've had... and I've had quite a few.
Miah completed the first half of my large pelican tattoo yesterday. He worked with me to create the perfect piece and he did an incredible job. He is a very talented artist that has clearly gained from his many years of tattooing experience.
The shop is clean, comfortable and totally chill. There is plenty of gorgeous art  to look at while you're getting tattooed. Everyone was super friendly and not stuck up or snooty, as I've experienced with many other shops. I absolutely enjoyed my three-hour experience at Old Crow.
This is a high-end shop with really amazing artists... The work doesn't come cheap but is worth every penny. If you want a shop with a bunch of wall panels of prefabbed art for your next drunk tat, keep on movin' - this ain't what you're looking for. But if you want a kick-@$$ custom done by a real artist, this is definitely your spot.
Miah did my most recent tat, and hit the ball way out of the park. I waited a month or so for an appointment with him (well worth it-this one was hella important to me to get just right) but according to him there are also some younger/ less well-known artists in the shop who have a shorter wait time, if you've got an urgent need to scratch that itch to be inked.
Ok, I love Old Crow.
To be honest, I have never been inked there (YET!), but all the folks who are a part of this RAD Gallery/Tattoo Parlor are just Great. Philip Milic took his dream and created it for all of us to enjoy...
As far as the ink goes, it it absolutely top notch. I have had more friends then I can remember get work done here, and they are always super pleased with what comes out.
(I am plotting to get something done with Dana this year)
And the arts? Terry does great things with the front room (Gallery space) time and time again.
It's not uptight or pretentious like many galleries you may have visited in the past. It's one of the best things happening in the east bay.
+ I just moved over by Lake Merritt, so I will be visiting more often.
BIG UP! ;)
I live a few blocks from Old Crow. They've been open for a couple years, but this was my first time with them, mainly because it took me a long time to figure out what I wanted. I had my design printed out and I decided on a whim to walk down, unsure if drop-ins were encouraged or not. I've seen a few places before that prefer appointments; either way, I wasn't in a huge rush, so no big deal.
Anyways, Sean took care of me on the spot. My design was small and sorta basic, so I spent only about 90 minutes there. Very nice guy, clean facility and the price was reasonable and what I expected. I'll definitely be back and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Old Crow and Sean to anybody I know.
Lastly, they are cash only, so be prepared. I didn't realize this and I had to go to the ATM in the liquor store across the street.
Chill People, Great Artists, and overall good experience. I received my first tattoo here, and now they did such a good job, I go there a lot. They have four different artists who do custom tattoos. Personally, I like to roll with my man Stewie. But anyways, talk to Terry in the front, and he'll for sure hook you up with a date or answer any questions you have. I went in there like 3 times before I finally decided to get my tatt. Terry was so cool that he made me feel more comfortable about going through with it. Anyways, great tattoo shop next to the lake.
Review Source:This place has been open for 2 years now. Good people, great artists. Philip has done both of my tattoo's. He took the plunge and opened his own tattoo studio and gallery as so was born "Old Crow Tattoo". Great job, its welcoming, friendly and he has really good artists. Its like family style, open and sharing. Philip has good ethics around his work, and puts a lot of time and energy into his art. I can't imagine getting ink from anyone else. We get to tell stories and laugh while the work is being created. Old crow has a good ambience and great art on the walls. Go check it out, you wont be disappointed.
I read some of the reviews on old crow and laughed. One thing I like to do on yelp is review the reviewers. I think yelp reviews can really hurt a business and some of the comments on old crow are downright nutty and out of place.
Jo M.
Oakland, CA Â you gave 1 star because they got your appointment mixed up, shit it happens, make another Im sure they would work it out for you. its a permanent work of art on you, chill out.
Albus D.
If I don't love it, I don't swallow.
Martinez, CA
After reading your review, I would never of tattooed your ass for free. You made him nervous alright, sounds like an understatement. I ask why you got your tattoo, you say a tattoo without a story is worthless. I say a nasty put down is no story its a negative imprint that you will wear for life. Yeah and he has a snappy bitch of a chihuahua, and I hope Lula snaps your ankles if you ever return.
My girl friend is having Miah tattoo the most beautiful tattoo I've ever seen. Â She has a beautiful phoenix on her back, which is almost finished! Â Old Crow has some amazing artists. Â I can't imagine going anywhere else to get inked up.
Also, in this week's yelp email newsletter my "Oaklandish" tattoo was featured with a shout out to Old Crow!!! Love it!
Just got home from getting my tattoo, and I love it. Â When I went in to schedule and chat about design, everyone was really sweet. Â Had the art done by Siri, and she does great work...a gentle hand with the outlines (nothing can help the pain on filling in color).
I'd been thinking about getting this tattoo (my second) for several years, and this was a great place to finally do it. Â The shop has a nice laid-back vibe to it, everyone was friendly, and the art gallery in the front of the shop gives you something to look at and calm the nerves if you have to wait a bit.
I had wanted to get my Grandma's name tattooed on my arm for some time. My friend alerted to me a group-on for Old Crow. After checking out their reviews, I took the plunge and bought one. Honestly, I was a little nervous because I did not know anyone personally who had been tattooed here before.
I finally worked the courage up to call. Terri (I think the studio manager) answered. He was so kind and helpful. I came down to the studio and met with Dana. I showed him a photo of the type of calligraphy I wanted. He took a copy of the photo and my Grandma's name and created the most beautiful tattoo.
I adore my tattoo! Thanks Old Crow! Thanks Dana!
p.s. they have a really cool gallery.
p.p.s in the future, it would be great if Old Crow gave a handout for how to care for your new tattoo - and to clarify if we are allowed to come in and get touch-ups.
Old Crow is the place but Miah is the man. I had a NASTY old tattoo that was over twenty years old. I had talked to a couple artists who were thinking they could do a cover. The old Tat was so bad people were like "What is that... a raisin ? An octopus, an eagle ? I let one of them start on it and they mangled me so bad I had to have a couple bouts of removal before Miah could attempt his cover. Suffice it to say the cover is EXCELLENT and I couldn't be happier. This cover was about a third of my entire back so it was a BIG job. Miah Rocks, accept no substitutes.
Review Source:I had been searching for a while to find the right person to give me a wrap around tribal piece for my forearm and biceps. I had the concept in my mind but not the specific design. A long path lead me to Miah at Old Crow. After our first meeting he came up with the perfect vision, which truly exceeded my expectation. I highly recommend him. He works very fast but maintains a light touch. The atmosphere of Old Crow is artsy, professional, clean and very chill.
Review Source:My first tattoo was possible thanks to a Groupon AND most of all Stewart, artist at Old Crow. I went in for an initial consultation appointment, followed by a date set for getting the tattoo. As is their practice, Stewart was extremely patient, generous and detailed in answering my various questions and concerns. Â And here it is, his art, his work, my intentions with this tattoo in me for life.
Review Source:I recently purchased a Groupon for a tattoo at Old Crow. Â As a newbie, I was nervous about getting inked for the first time. Â
Miah was wonderful, helped to talk through my design idea, and to alleviate my jitters about going under the needle. Â When I first met him, I was charmed by the fake stencils he was applying to his daughter's arm, a heart that said "Dad". Â I was so impressed by the picture he drew, which truly encapsulated what I wanted. Â
Now, I'm thinking about a bigger piece, maybe a half sleeve. Â Thank you, Miah, and all the wonderful folks at Old Crow. Â Oh, and they have gorgeous art work in the front retail space.
So much love for the crew at Old Crow. Â I first met Philip before the shop was officially open, and was immediately blown over by his demeanor and amazing skill. Â So much so, that I booked an appointment stat. Â Philip worked with me to develop the perfect Oaklandish tree of life, which has graced my arm for over a year now. Â
Great people, beautiful artwork, fantastic gallery shows.
i ended up at old crow because my artist (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dillonforte.com&s=7a6dd15c7fbdfc3b911a380ac2033268d2ac42615ae455d7d1f72bded9887291" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.dillonforte.c…</a>) was a guest artist. he moved to LA and happened to be in town so i had to get work done while he was here.
i had heard about old crow when i use to live in Oakland, but due to my commitment to my artist i never ventured in, even though i was only around the corner.
upon walking in you're greeted by an open layout with the walls plastered with local art work. from what i was told, the art is always in rotation so it'd be worth while to pop in from time to time to see the new stuff. i have been to many tattoo shops whether it was with friends, dropping in or my artist was sitting in and i have to say, this is one awesome group of guys. we were laughing the whole time, cracking jokes and they treat you as a welcomed guest; which is extremely important.
getting tattoo work done is an intimate experience, so its important that there is a good vibe and you enjoy yourself as opposed to feeling like you're annoying someone whilst asking questions/making suggestions. my session was +/- 5 hours and we had fun the entire time.
props to an awesome and unique art gallery, a talented team of tattoo artists and overall really nice guys. if you're in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and pop in to check out the art or even just to hangout.
there needs to definitely be more shops like this.
& props to Dillon Forte!
I got my first tattoos at Old Crow and it was a very pleasant experience.
Small wrist tattoos by Andre, I believe was his name... might be off.
He did a great job determining sizing and making sure I wasn't freaking out. I have a high pain tolerance so it wasn't an issue at all.
The reason why there's one less star than awesome, is because everyone I've talked to says I was ripped off. Said it was way too much money to pay for what I got done. That left a bad taste with me. Seemed like I got taken advantage of a little bit.
but I'm very happy with the tattoos and I love the gallery set up in the front half of the shop. Layout wise, its one of the hottest shops I've been in.
and of course, CLEAN and PROFESSIONAL.
These are some pretty nice ... and very cool folks ... who are doing some amazing art on the bodies of their clientele ... in an art gallery. Pretty cool, huh? Miah Babajee hooked up my om mani padme hum/sunyata tattoo on my forearm and I'm completely satisfied with work that he did.
I don't know about other places, but ... this is as good as it gets.
Word.
My first tattoo and it won't be my last.
Went there after sending Terry an email to see whether I can walk in to get a "P" tattooed on my wrist. Â No problem. Â Since it wasn't anything fancy or delicate, I didn't go in asking for a particular artist. Â But I did do my research and was very pleased with all the artists' work there. Â
Went there on a late Thursday afternoon and Andre (artist) was there to help me out. Â I brought him the "P" in the font I wanted and he drew it out and added a bit of his own twist. Â
The place is nice and spacious. Â I really like the fact that they are really about art and not about flipping through a bunch of folders to select your tattoo. Â
They made my first experience quick, easy, and not intimidating.
Short & simple... Siri rocks! Â My name's DJ Luna & so I figured I'd get a tattoo of a fairy sitting on the moon. Found a pic online, showed it to her & she came up with a bad ass version of it. Â Check out the pic. Â I would definately reccommend Siri. Â She's super chill, down to earth, does great work, and is cute too. Â ;) Â Hey, had to at least add that in there. Â lol.
Review Source:Old crow is ossum!
I've only been tattooed by Siri there, but from hanging out around the shop the rest of the gang are rad! All of their artwork is amazing- from the ones that are painted to the ones that are tattooed. And everyone that works there is super down to earth and easy to talk to.
The space itself is very open and comfortable, giving clients room to chat with one another as well with other tattoo artists.
I'm definitely getting more work done by Siri in the future, and hopefully some by Philip (the owner) as well.
Plus! And I don't know if I'm the only one who geeks out over this- but the wood furniture in there is amazing! Hoorah! Awesome furniture!
I have other tattoo's but nothing so nicely done that made me cry. The color and just everything about it was just.....AWESOME!!!!!! The artist were very nice and friendly. I have 2 more that I want done and most you bet I will be going back to this place! Â HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!! Siri and Patrick thank you! You guys rock!!
Review Source:This place is incredible, all of the artists are extremely talented, it is VERY clean, and there is ALWAYS an awesome new art gallery being put up for another show.
I got my first major piece done by Andre Malcom, I told him what I wanted and he drew up an amazing and unique piece for me. Â The colors are so vibrant and beautiful that I get compliments numerous times a day. Â He is extremely quick and precise, as well as very friendly and I didn't feel uncomfortable asking him to fix something that I didn't like or wanted changed. Â I came in to get the color redone once more after the first 5 hour session and he made time for me and was very flexible with my schedule (because without a car coming from the city it can be a pain in the ass!)
I have been to many different tattoo shops and not one can compare in the talented and friendly artists, or the peaceful and colorful environment you get while you're getting inked. Â
Also, as a vegetarian, it's pretty cool that there's a no meat rule! Â So if you bring something to eat make sure you respect that the shop is a meat free haven.
Love this place, and I will gladly drive up from LA (just moved back) for any of my next tattoos!
Like many people, I come to Old Crow for the artistic attentions of owner Philip Milic. In the eight hours or so I've been worked on to date, I've been delighted to meet artists, guests, clients, and friends, all of whom made me feel comfortable and at-home despite being top-nude and stuck with needles for hours on end. Every time I pass through the front gallery area, the art is different, but always excellent and interesting.
Philip's art is truly striking. Aside from being a veritable mind-reader in turning my rather vague concept into incredible art, he's exacting, artistic and sympathetic all at once when it comes to actually wielding the needle. I've had a couple smaller tattoos before working with Philip, but Old Crow is the first place I've actually wanted to come back to.
EVERYONE SHOULD GET TATTOOED HERE!!! Such a welcoming and friendly staff, amazing people and amazing artists, ALWAYS clean and sanitary, really open and doesn't feel like a cramped tattoo shop with weird little rooms. so many good things i could say about this place and not enough time! also, the promotion and support of so many different artists is a great representation of the love for amazing art and the community that these people have :) amazing amazing shop.
Review Source:I came here with my boyfriend so he could get a tattoo done. This place is very clean, and the staff is very friendly. The art gallery displayed in front is very imaginative and demonstrates many unique talents.
My boyfriend's tattoo is a work in progress, which requires a tattoo artist that is both experienced and detailed, with a creative mindset. He went to Siri (pronounced 'sear-i) to brainstorm ideas to best put into a tattoo that is going on his right shoulder . She is creating the most inventive, inspiring ideas that just blew both our minds. I sat watching her work, and I was very impressed with her demeanor. She is extremely talented, friendly and professional, and I recommend her to everyone  who wants good quality tattoo work!! The tattoo my boyfriend has is a work of art in-progress. What Siri has come up with is nothing short of pure talent. She is truly gifted. If you are picky with who you get your tattoos from (as you should be, you are dealing with needles), and want quality work, this is the place to go!! Ask for Siri!
Old Crow Tattoo is such an amazing place... The Gallery walls are filled with some of the Bay Area's Best. Â Same with the Tattoo Shop, Philip's work is show stopping and the rest of the crew is crackinnn as well. After kicking it over there with during an art opening, I knew this was a place to visit again ang again.
Review Source:I've been getting work done from Phillip for over 4 years and have had the opportunity to see Old Crow come to fruition. Not only is Phillip an incredible and unique artist but Old Crow is a great community space that practices what it preaches. Definately, if you are hoping to get work done, check out Old Crow.
Review Source:When I walked in to Old Crow, I felt instantly comfortable. The space has been beautifully redone and feels open and relaxing; it's a great setting for getting tattooed or taking in the art on the walls (which changes often and is always fun to check out).
My girlfriend and I got tattoos from Philip Milic who is a consummate tattoo artist and a personable, down-to-earth guy. In the process of being in the shop for about 9 hours, we also got a chance to meet some of the other artists (all were very friendly and approachable) and see some of their work which was impressive. Â
While Philip works by appointment only, the three other folks who operate out of Old Crow, take walk-ins and this is one of the few tattoo shops I would actually walk into (just remember to bring cash).
Overall, our experience was exceptional and I would (and have) happily recommend(ed) Old Crow to friends and relatives. I'm already looking forward to the next tattoo!
What a great experience I had at Old Crow. I'd been thinking of getting a specific tattoo for awhile but wasn't sure where to go. I was riding my bike to work one day and noticed Old Crow. After taking a look at Phillip's work on his website, I knew it was the shop for me. Check out his website-his work is phenomenal. When I walked in to get a consultation, I met Andrew and talked to him about the piece I wanted--a tarot card. Andrew and I chatted about the merits of doing a literal interpretation and he decided he would like to try his own interpretation. He was patient and informative during all communication. When I came back to check out his design--I was blown away. It was beautiful and a really serene portrait. Â The tattoo took 2 sittings--it seemed very quick and it was a pleasure to be in the shop. It has a great mix of neighborhood rambunctiousness and urban temple.
The tattoo was partially to commemorate my 39th birthday and also to acknowledge a spiritual journey. The shop, the artist and the tattoo were in perfect harmony with my intent. I had been nervous about getting a tattoo but everyone in the shop was hospitable and I've come away with a great appreciation for the business and the art. I've received a number of compliments and I'm already planning my next visit. Also, my husband came to visit during the process and the guys were really warm and generous with their time and he is looking forward to his own visit.
This is a long one so sit down.
My sexy man thing and I found out about this tattoo parlor/ art gallery at an art party the night of our third anniversary. They were tattooing for free (a promotional idea perhaps?) and after checking out their set up and what not we signed up to each receive a tattoo around 12:30 that night. Â When we were signing up we informed them that we needed to be done at our designated times as we had to catch the last BART home and were not dressed to spend the night on the streets of San Francisco.
At that point we had seen all there was to see in the galleries and were simply cooling our heels until midnight when we could go start waiting our turn to get inked. When midnight rolled around we meandered over to where the tattooing was being done and sat down quietly to wait our turns like good little children as everyone else drunkenly milled around. The person who had helped me get signed up informed us that they were a bit behind, but she reassured us that she would get us in. She in fact promised she would make sure we'd get in because it was our anniversary and she respected that.
So we waited, 12:30 came and went with continued reassurance that we'd get in, 1 o'clock came and went taking our last train with it, but we said fuck it, as long as our wait was worth it (we'll find an all night diner or something). Around 1:10 the artist we were sitting nearest to, Andrew Mann, turned to us and said "are you guys waiting to get tattooed?" (no, you're just so fascinating) to which we replied "yes". They then seemed to have a huddle about the schedule and we were informed we could come back on Monday and get our tattoos if we wanted them that badly, gob smacked we sputtered about how we had waited for an hour and missed our last train home and now had to find a way to pass 7 hours on the street waiting for BART to reopen et cetera. To our crest fallen gibbering Andrew Mann replied "I don't know you" and walked away.
No to be so easily defeated we went to the women running the front and asked disbelievingly if they were really calling it quits and we were informed that the artists were tired and that we could come back Monday and the tattoo would still be free. We were impatiently apologized to and told they didn't know how they got so far behind, I can tell them how at least Andrew got behind: no time  management skills. I watched him sit and chat with people when he should have just told them he was swamped and couldn't talk. The woman who had promised to make sure we got done let us know she couldn't control the artists and didn't mean to "fuck us over".  My advice to everyone is not to make promises you can't keep and if you fucked someone over and they know you didn't mean to, don't condescend to inform them.
I digress.
Disappointed we wrote our contact information down and went to spend time deciding how to get home.
Clearly we got home.  And shortly there after realized we didn't know where to go: the art gallery in San Francisco? Their parlor in Oakland? The moon? They didn't tell us. So we found their information and called to see what we should do. The first time we called the person up front told us to call back in an hour when there would be an artist in to make an appointment with. After an hour we called back, no answer... An hour and a half passes, we call back: no answer. We repeated this pattern until we finally got a hold of Andrew Mann the next day who obliged to squeeze us in on Friday at six. The cherry on top of that was when I asked my fiancé if Friday around six was good Andrew snapped into my ear "Not around six, at six".
So I made a point to stroll into Old Crow at 5:45 sharp. Some of the art was very cool, some of it was a bit garish, and there was one big god awful piece. By the way kids, art gallery + tattoo parlor is not a revolutionary concept. 6 o'clock came with no sign of Andrew, 6:30....7 o'clock...7:30(an hour and a half late? after making a point over the phone to be on time?) and finally he saunters to the front to come consult with the lowly promotional spill over.
He decided to take my fiancé back first as I apparently made him nervous and while I waited I got to talk to Philip Milic, who seemed to be a pretty cool guy even though he brings his snappy chihuahua to work with him. I can spell law suit waiting to happen, can he?
Andrew loaded his machine with out my looking, but I'll bet the money we tipped he didn't check the needle for barbs and I noticed after he started that he hadn't bagged the gun. As he already admitted I made him nervous and he was tattooing I didn't say anything for the sake of my arm but how icky and unprofessional.
In the end one may ask why I even got my tattoo and my answer is because a tattoo without a story is worthless.
Good job if you read all of this.
Old Crow Tattoo is the shit. Â I went in there and the person at the front was chill, laid back and honest. Â I am currently getting some work done with Andrew who is chill, funny, eclectic and friggin' talented. Â As someone already mentioned, book some time with him before he gets superstar status!! Hold it down Oaktown!
Review Source:Old Crow is many things...I go there for the stellar tattoo work by owner Philip Milic, but it's also a beautiful space to visit!
This space just opened about a month ago and the gallery is always filled by really amazing and unusual artwork. Photographer Ion's stylized portraits and images fill the hallway between the gallery and the back space, which is dedicated to tattoo work. I can personally attest to Philip's phenomenal talent and professional demeanor..you are in very good hands with him. His artwork is beautiful in and of itself, and you would be hard-pressed to find finer tattoo work anywhere...
...but that doesn't mean that the other artists in the space are not also amazing! Andrew Mann does really beautiful work--get an appointment with him before he blows up and you have to wait six months!
Old Crow is a great addition to the Oakland arts scene, and I can't recommend the artists enough! Go check it out for yourself!
