I'm not entirely sure how or why Warlocks has been around for so many years to be quite honest. The staff is incredibly rude and unprofessional. I have spent nearly 5 hours and hundreds of dollars having a tattoo fixed that was done at Warlocks by an "artist". Just because you have a license to tattoo doesn't mean you're an artist.
Review Source:My boyfriend and I went here last year on my birthday to get the conch of my ear pierced and the employees were so rude, we had to leave. We arrived an hour before they were supposed to close when I said I would like to get my ear pierced. All five of the employees were standing around, then the fat one (probably the owner of the place) spoke up and essentially yelled "My piercer went home an hour ago!" So not a single one of his remaining crew could have poked a needle through my ear properly? Pathetic. We felt terribly unwelcome, so we left.
Go to Blue Flame instead. It is a world of difference in terms of caliber of staff.
Warlock's is great! I've had most of my tats done there and most of those were done by Rich. The staff is professional and polite and thorough. The waiting area is clean and I appreciate that they don't allow cell phones while inside. I've taken in several drawings or paintings, etc., and (usually Rich) the artist will work on it with you to make it "yours." You can also just tell them what you'd like to have drawn and they can do that as well. I have three of my tats that are just text. The artists were very helpful in sitting down at the computer with me to work on the font size, style, placement, etc.
I would advise making an appointment with one of the artists so that you don't have to wait a long time to be seen - especially if it's during one of their "rush hours."
If you're used to walking into a tattoo shop and being greeted by a dark, grungy place with questionable sanitation standards, you've never been to Warlock's. This is the oldest shop in Raleigh, and for good reason. The artists are talented and every one I've ever met is very friendly, even to a first-timer (although I'd have to think any tattoo artist scorns that guy that comes in for the barbed wire arm tattoo). The prices were comparable to other shops in the area, although our artist cut us a little bit of a deal. We were both very pleased with the work that was done and are planning to go back very soon for more ink.
Review Source:This place has been around for longer than any other body art shop in Raleigh, and there's good reason for that. The artists provide great work, and they have enough artists that no matter what style of tattoo it is you're looking for, chances are someone has it covered.
While I haven't seen the quality of work here surpass that of Blue Flame, I'm still often impressed by the pieces I see on people around. My experience with Byron has been great, and I would definitely recommend choosing him if you're looking for black and grey work or something more traditional.
All in all, a solid, clean shop with tons of options and experienced artists.
