After years of untaming and self-groom failures, I decided to look for a brow guru who has reasonable prices. Â AND THANK GOD, I DIDN'T HAVE TO LOOK FAR.
-Literally, she has a very good location: She's on the corner of King and Ke'eaumoku.
-Her pricing is probably the best I've seen.
-She's very sweet and nice. Â She makes your experience very comfortable and personable.
Lastly but more importantly, HER WORK IS AMAZING. Â She gave me what I wanted and more! Â She knew exactly what I had wanted!
I'm gonna go to her for years, I know it.
I'm writing this because I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HER!
Drop your current esthetician and go to HER! Â AMAZING!
There's plenty of misconceptions about us Koreans:
- we all love spicy food
- we have very short tempers
- Americans have to ask if we/our relatives come from the North OR South (SMH)
- we have a parent, uncle/aunty, or some kind of relative who owns a convenience store, a restaurant, or some kind of biz on Koreanmoku
- we have a halmoni (grandma), eemo (aunty), and/or umma (mom), or know of another Korean female, who's had her eyebrows and eyeliner permanently tattooed 10-20 years ago and the ink has since changed from black or dark brown to an intriguing dark aqua blue-greyish color that would make Picasso cringe
I'm only-half Korean, by the way, but 4/5 are true for me (I have no Korean relatives on O'ahu). Â My umma (mom) originally got her eyebrows & eyeliner tattooed permanently in South Korea back in the '80's ... cue to '98/'99, we both went back to visit relatives and she opted to get her 'brows refilled since they were dark aqua blue. Â
Cost: $40+ USD and the artist who worked on her looks to have had a visual impairment or slight case of epilepsy. Â Maybe both.
Result: thin, severely arched 'brows that look like a mix of chola/"Mi Vida Loca" movie 'brows vs. drag queen review kine. Â
Umma had offered me the opportunity to get my 'brows done, and I'm so happy I refused! Â Fast forward 10+ years later, I'm about to get married and I'm tired of my thin, anorexic, badly-in-need-of-Rogaine-or-a-hair-transplant Asian eyebrows ... look on Yelp seeking out some kind of "permanent" fix ... look through at least half a dozen artists and their reviews ... and come across Mary D. and Beauty Bliss!
I started off with an eyebrow waxing to get a grasp of her talents, was very satisfied and went back a few months later for a free consultation! :)
Here's the stuff I love about her ....
MARY D.
She's so easygoing, laid-back, and so personable! Â This combo makes you feel right at home from the start. Â Mary manages to make me feel like I've known her for 10 or 20 years when, in truth, it's only been about less than a year. Â If you're nervous, she somehow manages to help put you at ease --- whether it's waxing your brows or taming the pubic monster downstairs. Â
TALENT
She worked at Paul Brown salon in Ward for over 10+ years doing facials and waxing (esp. browns & Brazilians) before moving on to establish her own biz & get certified in permanent makeup. Â She DEFINITELY knows 'brows and what kind of style, arch, and length will complement your face ... I can't emphasize this enough. Â She won't give you eyebrows befit for a stripper or drag queen like some other places will fool you into getting into (nothing wrong w/those kind of 'brows, but 99% of women can't carry the look). Â Mary will give you her professional opinion of what she feels looks best and, at the same time, she's open to hear about what your preferences are & balance them together.
When I went in for my permanent 'brow consultation, I had it in my head that I wanted a more prominent arch ... even after Mary recommended against it, I still wanted it, so she patiently took the time to explain her reasons why based on my particular face, how my eyebrows grew, etc., and also drew it in to show me what I was describing to her. Â To put it this way, what I imagine and what was reality didn't jive (I looked like a tranny version of myself), so I went with her advice & have no regrets going back.
SPECIALTY
'Brows, Brazilians, and permanent cosmeticmakeup* (*permanent = colored pigments that are inserted into the skin; lasts up to several years)
LOCATION
Located at the corner of S. King St. and Koreanmoku (Ke'eaumoku) in the same building as Sushi Sasabune, Paris Station, etc. & near Club 939. Â Parking is free & available in back of building w/entrance on King. & entrance/exit on Koreanmoku. Â
PRICES: VERY REASONABLE!
I paid $275 back in Jan. 2013 for my permanent 'brows and this included a free consultation, the appointment to get it done, AND a free follow-up/touch-up 6 weeks after the initial procedure. Â It's been raised to $300, but she is still worth every single penny! Â I've gotten numerous compliments on my brows from my fiance (well, duh, he bettah since he paid fo' it!), classmates, friends, and even acquaintances. Â

REVIEW #233
Mary is THEEEEE most amazing wax genius --- EVER!
I met her at Paul Brown 7+ years ago, and since then I have not let anyone near my eyebrows. Â Mary not only is extremely talented, but she's friendly and personable. Â She makes brazillian waxes painless and quick! Â I look forward to every appointment because I know that I'll be leaving happy and beautiful. Â Best $ spent on beauty.
mary is by far THE BEST WAXER and PERMANENT MAKEUP ARTIST that i have ever been to... i have been going to mary for the past 7-8 years. Â she always makes them look beautiful and gorgeous.
her pricing is great. Â she is very personable and sweet. Â
i would definitely recommend her to everyone. if you want amazing looking brows you should go see her.
the parking is great... and i am so glad she finally got her own place instead of working for a corporate company...
please go and support her business. Â :)
Mary is http://bomb.com!!!!! Â Wherever Mary goes I will go. Â I don't know what I would do without her. Â I would recommend Mary to everyone. Â Love! Love! Love Mary!!!!
Review Source:I have known Mary for about 5 years. Â
I started seeing Mary for eyebrow waxes...which then lend to my Brazillians...which then lead to my permanent eyebrow tattoos. Â She really is the best at all three. Â (I can say this after seeing other women for my waxes and permanent makeup.) Â
Let's start with BROWS:
Mary definitely knows how to shape ones brows so it flatters your features and face. Â She is honest and will discuss with you what you're comfortable with. Â Mary helped me re-shape my brows after having a tattoo job done by another woman who arched them slightly too much. Â Mary was able to go over the faded tattoos and give me flattering and NATURAL looking eyebrows to compliment my face shape as well as my skin color. Â I completely trust her 100%. Â My brows are not a harsh color and are not a heavy contrast to what my natural brows would look like. Â To this day, no one can tell that my brows are tattooed. Â When people find out they are in complete shock as they look so so natural. Â If you are debating getting your brows done - do it. Do them with Mary. Â You won't regret it. Â
Now onto BRAZILLIAN WAXING:
I have seen about 3 other women for Brazilians in Hawaii prior to seeing Mary; I have seen roughly 5-6 other women here in San Francisco after seeing Mary. Â So believe me when I say MARY IS THE BEST AT BRAZILIANS. Â I have seen my share of the okay...to the painfully I-don't-know-what-I'm-doing Brazilian waxers out there and everything in between. Â Mary is very thorough and knows what she is doing. Â She is able to get everything with as minimal strips as possible. Â The worst is when a waxer needs to reapply hot wax multiple times over a spot they just stripped from (that is when it gets painful) and then to go home and see that they did NOT get everything. Â I did not go through all that pain for a half-assed job. Â Mary is very thorough and quick and painless (as much as a Brazilian can be). Â She is able to remove the strips quickly and applies pressure after to ease the pain. Â Mary is also very personable and friendly and she really makes you feel comfortable through out the whole ordeal - so if it is your first time...she will definitely make you feel relaxed so you don't feel awkward. Â
I live in San Francisco now and when I come home to visit, I always make it a point to visit her for all three services.
Mary has officially moved and opened her own place: Â Beauty Bliss. Â Located on the corner of King & Keeaumoku, her shop is on the second floor above Sasabune. Â Free parking in the back (same as 939 lot) and flexible appointment scheduling.
I am so happy for her and you should be too....I have a feeling that this new venue will really allow her to unleash her inner wax-miracles and paint faces with permanent tattoo. Â She's making the world a better place- one vajayjay and caterpillar eyebrows at a time :)
Mary is my brow savior! Â She has a talent for shaping your brows to make you look your best. Â She will also help you save your brows if you over-plucked or messed up your eyebrows trying to shape them yourself in the past. Â I rarely get manis/pedis/facials/etc. but this is something I do faithfully - I think it really makes a difference for my overall appearance, plus it's reasonable!
Strangers have complimented me on my brows which is a little weird but speaks volumes for Mary's brow abilities!
MARY. Oh My God. Thank goodness... I called paul brown wanting a wax with her...but they told me that she doesn't work there anymore!! They tried to get me to schedule with them, but I KNEW BETTER.
I frantically searched my wallet for the business card she gave me, she told me that she might be quitting Paul Brown since I last saw her. Â I was so relieved to learn that she has just moved. Â I would die if I did not have her doing my brows.
When Mary moves, I move too, and so do ALL her clients. She is THAT good.
Mary gets the job done quick, fast, and painless as possible. I have not seen her for anything else other than brows but she's probably good. $20 is worth the price because you get what you pay for, and she does an amazing job.
p.s. my brows are crying right now because I am away from home most of the year. too scared to see anyone else but mary.
Mary you are a goddess of brows!!
I've been seeing Mary for 5+ years. I meet her at Paul Brown. She has great personality and soo good at what she does!! Â I always get compliments on my brows. Thanks to her!! I love it that she trims too as mention by a previous yelper. It shapes it even better. Thanks to her. She moved and now is off of Ward. There is a private lot for parking. Â Make you appointment now. You will not be disappointed. She is the best!!
THANK YOU MARY FOR DOIN WHAT YOU DO!!
Mary is the best! Â I have been going to her for my brows for probably about 4 years now. Â She's the only one that I let do my eyebrows. Â When she left Paul Brown to do her own thing and work in FaceitSalon, I had to follow her! Â I remember the first time she ever did my eyebrows, I was so nervous and asked her to please not make it too thin! Â She made it just the way I wanted and every time ever since. Â She really cares about shaping your brows the way you want.. and she's gentle! Â I recommend her to everyone. Â Thank you Mary!
Review Source:Mary is the only person I trust with my eyebrows when I come back home.
For those of you who don't know, Mary Dornan (previously Mary Phan) used to work at Paul Brown in the upstairs spa rooms before opening her own place across from Sports Authority in April.
Her new place is nice, clean and has free parking without having to go in that ward warehouse narrow-ass parking lot!
What I like best about her is that she is always consistent but doesn't make the same shape for everyone.. I should know, because my sister goes to her too. She takes her time and is sure to both TRIM TRIM TRIM those beasts as well as wax with minimal pain and utmost precision. Overall I've been very happy with her and if you know me, I am quite particular about my brows (hence my OCD about finding a good brow waxer and then sticking with them). When I went to school on the mainland, for the first 2 years away I didn't really want to trust anyone else but Mary so I would only wax my brows when I came home for winter and summer... good thing I ended up finding someone decent in LA *shudder*-- the horrors! Â Anyway, she's pretty reasonable, $20 for brows which is $1 less than Paul Brown.
She also offers eyebrow tattooing, which is one reason why she moved.
Thank you Mary for taming those unruly buggahs!
Where Mary goes I go, my family and I have been seeing her for years! She makes every appointment feel like a slumber party with the girls :) Every time I leave her I feel like a different person, a person ready to take on the world ;) If you want to have fun and look beautiful she's the one you need to see.
Review Source:I'm "low-maintenance" but want to look well-groomed.
Mary has an eye for beauty.
She gives me a natural-looking arch that flatters my eye shape. Others have given me thinner, dramatic brows (which is too high maintenance / high drama) or not enough of an arch that, though clean, doesn't define my eyes enough. This is a talent.
Mary is very professional, attentive and punctual:
She noticed I got red after waxing and changed to a wax better-suited for my sensitive skin. The pain was not intolerable but it's clear that customer comfort is important to her. Perhaps most importantly, Mary will not keep you waiting because the person before you added on extra services.
Sometimes, by looking at the aesthetician, you can sense if they can give you the kind of beauty you are striving for. Â Mary is a natural beauty. She's not covered up in makeup and tons of products.
I have seen Mary for my monthly brow waxing for about 4 continuous years now. Â I highly recommend her.
I first went to her scared and nervous for my Brazilian, but she makes you feel so comfortable and she is sooooo FUNNY that it actually goes by really quickly and less painful! Â When we were finished she took a look at my eyebrows and said we needed to fix them. LOL! (To be honest I knew they needed fixing.) Ever since then, she is the only person that touches my eyebrows!
I have a scar on one of my eyebrows, so I need to draw them in everyday. So I was very excited when she got her license to tattoo.... Still a little scared because it would be permanent, but I totally trust her with my brows. They came out AMAZING, and I am so happy that I don't need to draw them in anymore!!! I would definitely recommend her to everyone!!!!
BEST waxer around! Been getting my eyebrows done by her for 4 years now and wouldnt trust anyone else with them! I get compliments everywhere on my brows and she has always done the best job! Great location, great services, awesome prices and Mary herself is soo sweet and funny! Don't go anywhere else for any type of waxing or permanent makeup!! She's the best on the island and will always make you look fabulous!
