The artists here are amazing, but whoever is running the desk is special needs. I have yet to make an appointment without something getting screwed up; the day, the time, or how much time is needed, and messages left on the even present voicemail are neither returned nor acknowledged. It's super frustrating and overshadows the great work coming out of this shop.
Review Source:chris fox & mike emmet have both done great work for me...
Customer service complaints & one star reviews are BS on here. Â I have news, this isn't Walmart, its a business where a bunch of artists are working. Â Who is going to look at great art and get turned off because of the counter service? People who probably wouldn't appreciate Depot Town.
Got tattooed there last April. Went in as a walk in with my own incredibly simple traditional design. I never filled out any paper work or signed anything which I thought was odd considering Ive had to do it for all my other tattoos. I don't remember the artist's name that tattooed me but he was incredibly rude and tattooed as if I was an inconvenience. Some lines on my tattoo go outside the design and while he rushed my shading, he went outside the outline, leaving me with flecks of black around my tattoo.
Just surprised by the attitude and quality of work from such a highly recommended tattoo shop. Also, $80 for a relatively small tattoo featuring black and one color seems a little pricey.
I visited the shop today to get a feel for their work and the atmosphere of the environment. I had not been to Yelp first, so I was just walking in. Turns out, the customer service aspect is unfortunately true.
I walked in and skimmed the various artists' albums. At that point, someone came over and asked if I needed help. I explained that I was getting an idea of the style and artist I wanted to choose. He said cool.
I spent 15 minutes going thru the books carefully. I'm no tattoo novice-- I have 4-- and was considering coming in for a cover up. When I finished looking at the books, I stood up and approached the counter.
The others working there weren't working on people. I stood there for a good 6 minutes. Seriously. In a regular business, approaching the counter = I need help. I had questions abt some work I had seen.
Suffice to say, even after artists approached others standing near the counter, it was clear to me that this was clearly NOT the place for me.
I have no problem with shelling out good money for good work. But not for poor service.
I've gotten tattooed by Dawn a few times, even before she opened Depot Town, and by Mike once. Â My boyfriend has also been tattooed by Dawn. We both get complimented on their work all the time, and couldn't be happier with our tattoos. Dawn &Mike are both fantastic tattooers &awesome people. I recommend Depot Town to anyone I know who is looking to get a tattoo. Super clean shop &great artists.. well worth it!
Review Source:I love Depot Town Tattoo!! All of the people that work there are super nice, and its a really chilled and laid back place. I've seen Jon Larson for my last few tattoos and he does an amazing job. Hes very nice and makes you feel very comfortable. Everyone that works there is amazing at what they do and I would let any of them tattoo me. I recommend this place to everyone!
Review Source:Last Tuesday, my sister and I decided to get matching sugar skull tattoos on the back of the calf instead of buying Festivus gifts. Â I went up to Depot Town a week before and dropped off the inspiration photo to Mike and told him that we just liked the shape of the head and the teeth and we needed a spider, honey bees, and orchids somewhere in there. Â I told him, you're the artist, do what you want. So we got there early and made sure we liked the design and we didn't have to make any changes. It was gorgeous!
Now, dear readers, this was my very first tattoo ever! My baby sister took me to get my first tattoo just like I took her to get her first piercing forever ago. I was scared to death until I got there, and then everything was fine! I felt very comfortable and it was easy to relax once I plopped myself down on the table.
Bill did my tattoo while Mike did my sister's. Â It was a lovely bonding experience for my sis and I: watching each other cringe and pain while giggling about it.
The shop is clean and everyone is friendly. Just don't ask Mike to allow you to listen to The Smiths while you get inked: "I hate Morrissey, that is where I draw the line." I couldn't help but laugh.
I want to go back and get my other leg done now!
I had Dawn ink a tattoo that I had designed. She rendered it beautifully, first by stencil, then in ink. Her help and suggestions on how to best execute the design really worked out well. Â It's good to have a competent and friendly artist on your side! The shop was clean and pleasant and the other employees we nice to meet as well.
Review Source:Depot Town Tattoo is a new business but its two primary artists are well-established. Dawn Cooke and Mike Emmett, both veterans of Jeff Zuck's "Name Brand" studio in Ann Arbor, have credibility. Â Dawn's known for her Japanese, Mike for his American, and either of them will tattoo you expertly. Â The upside to the shop is that they do great work. Â There are now several artists in addition to the two founders.
The downside to the shop is customer service. Â Rarely does anyone answer the phone, and they've never returned any of my phone calls or emails, hence the 3-star instead of 4-star rating. Â Walk-ins can be ignored for a few minutes because the artists hang out in the office with loud music on. Â For some, this is part of the atmosphere of a tattoo parlour, but to me it's aloof and borderline disrespectful not to return calls or e-mail.
There's ample free parking in Depot Town and the shop is clean and comfortable. Â I didn't see any thing other than the waiting area and the main (open) tattooing floor, but the windows are tinted so privacy isn't an issue.
Bottom line: Probably hosts the best tattoo artists in Ypsilanti, but with Spiral a few miles away and Name Brand and Lucky Monkey in Downtown Ann Arbor, this shop isn't yet one of the big dogs in the area.
