Go see Alex! She is amazing - a total miracle worker. Seriously. Call her.
My fiance and I have been seeing Alex since she was at Salon Blanc, although her latest home at Etch Salon is probably our favorite location so far. Convenient location, has its own parking lot, great overall.
I have really really difficult hair to cut - it's insanely thick and has a mind of its own. As you can imagine, I had many many years of bad haircuts before finally finding Alex. When I tell most stylists that I have thick hair, they say "oh, no problem." But they don't take the time to understand my hair, and I end up looking awful.
But Alex understands my hair! She spends as much time as it takes (which is close to 90 minutes) and does a phenomenal job. We start with the standard shampoo and conditioning, then Alex does the initial cut of my hair. After cutting off whatever length I want gone, she blow dries and flat irons my hair before continuing the cut. (This is where most stylists go wrong with my hair - they think they can handle the thickness and cut it while it's wet, but then it looks horrible and choppy when it dries.) Once my hair is dry and tamed, Alex takes her time cutting my layers and thinning out the exceptionally thick spots. Her attention to detail is fantastic, and I am ecstatic with my haircut every time I see her.
Never in my life has my hair been so cooperative, easy to style, and healthy and happy overall. This is all thanks to Alex! She is an incredible stylist, and I recommend her at every opportunity.
My friend recommending Joy after I had a very bad experience at another salon. Â Joy was friendly, professional, listened-well and made some awesome recommendations for my hair color. I have fine, blonde and short hair and she took great care in keeping it healthy and shiny. Â I love my new color and cut. Â I will be going back to her from now on.
Review Source:Finding the right hairdresser is like finding your soulmate, so when you finally find "the one" you stick with 'em. Â A couple of years ago my former hairdresser moved to the mainland and I spent over two years wandering around to different people and different salons, trying to find someone who understood me, my style, and what I wanted. Â When I got engaged I was desperate to find a good hairdresser so that my hair would look good on my wedding day, so I did what every normal Yelper would... I read the reviews. ;D Â Everyone seemed to comment about this one hairdresser named Alex, so I decided to give her a try. Â After our first meeting I knew... she...was...the...ONE (cue jumping up and down and yelling huray)!!
I have been seeing Alex for about a year and a half now and she is by far the best hairdresser I've ever seen. Â She moved to Etch Salon and I, of course, followed. Â What makes her so good? Â She is very knowledgeable about hair and is passionate about doing things right, while making your hair stay healthy. Â For example, when I first saw her (like I said, I was pretty desperate) my hair was a mess, all sorts of different colors from past dye jobs. Â She, of course, fixed it, but when I asked for highlights she told me I had to wait because my hair was corse and it needed to get healthy first.
She's also very meticulous in her work. Â She will spend the time needed to make sure you come out of that chair looking fab-u-lous! Â She's constantly measuring your hair strands on each side to make sure it's even. Â I've never seen anyone do that before, but being someone who's who's had her hair cut with one strand longer than the other, I could appreciate this method that she uses.
And then finally, I LOVE the EXTENSIONS that she uses on me. Â I don't put extensions in my hair all the time since my hair is thin and she doesn't want my hair thinning out even more, but when I do, I get tons of positive comments. Â This time around she tried a new type of extension. Â She always intertwines my real hair with the extensions, crocheting it and then clipping them at various places on my head, but this time she used a long strand of hair and the extensions started from all the way at the bottom of my hair to the middle of my head (I've uploaded pics so you can see what I mean). Â This allowed me to have even longer hair and because the extensions were all over you can't tell they're extensions, it just looks like I have layered locks. Â Even my co-workers who know I'm wearing extensions (since my hair couldn't grow that long overnight. lol) commented how the extensions she used this time around was much more real looking. Â And of course, I get to curl my hair and rock it like I'm Kim K. The extensions are light on your head, you can wash your hair and brush it without fear that the clips will fall off and as long as you take good care of it, it will last for a long time (you just need to go in to re-tighten it about once a month).
I would recommend anyone to Alex, I even got my mother-in-law to start going to her. Â I don't know if I want the word to get out about her, though... then that means I'll have to wait longer to get an appointment with her. ;)
Don't judge Etch from the outside, you'll never go in otherwise. If you are a fan of my hair; and believe me you should be (I keeeed!), you know I've been going to see Khoi for the last 4-5ish years. Once again, he's moved salons.
Etch is a tiny salon with a strange parking lot. The salon itself is small, no frills, and definitely not pretentious. Of course, I am biased to say that Khoi is the super-ultimate-does-no-wrong stylist (and he is, for me.) but I have seen the talent inside that salon and it's awesome. Richie also does great work.
What matters most is that you leave Etch feeling sharp, looking good, and your money's worth.
I LOVE Khoi and Richie!!!
Richie cut my hair + gave me highlights and they're the best. Richie's haircuts are grow out wonderfully. He's really skilled with scissors and knows the intricacies of the hair follicle and how hair falls in general. What an artist.
Khoi does my boyfriend's hair and it makes me wanna jump him, he always ends up looking so good.
Khoi ALSO did my hair for a recent modeling session I was in, I have honestly never looked so good. He's VERY detail oriented when it comes to cuts/styling so he's ALWAYS a good man to call. I will never let any one else style my hair...or touch my boyfriend's hair.
I've been going to see Kristen at Etch for about a year, and I absolutely love how she cuts my hair! The salon is brightly lit, and really cute, and everyone working there is super friendly, even if you're not there to see them. I was compelled to finally write a review after my cut this week - I LOVE IT! I can't stop touching my hair and playing with it. I'm required to wear my hair up at work, and I've been so sad all week that I couldn't keep it down to show off how great it looks.
The prices are totally reasonable (I think it depends on the stylist, from looking at other reviews...but Kristen is 100% reasonable on her pricing) and the quality and service are fabulous. Even better, for those of us who love to text and hate calling on an actual phone, I've made all my appointments directly with Kristen over text message - super convenient. Â Can't say enough good things :)
I've been having my hair done by  Richie from his days at Chop and now to Etch and he is absolutely FABULOUS!!  I've got tons of hair and have tried numerous salons and no one could give me any suggestions, let alone cut my hair until I found Richie.  He took the time to actually look at and feel my hair, then asked questions about hair maintenance, if I had any ideas about what I was looking to do and then he gave me his opinion on what he thought would work best for me.  Everytime I go in to see him he does the same thing..looks at hair, asks questions then proceeds with giving me the most  marvelous hair cuts.  I had my hair done this afternoon and once again he gave me the most amazing and sassy hair cut. Â
Richie is always professional, good natured, trendy and is up to date on cutting techniques and hair trends. Â He does charge a premium rate for his hair cuts but I am more than happy to pay him for it because he works miracles with my hair. Â
Etch's location had me stumped for a bit (been off-island for a bit) but I finally found it. Â It's located on the same side of the street as Wal-Mart on Keeamoku toward the mountains. Â There is parking in front and around Etch but the parking area is pretty rough. Â Richie is pretty busy, so make an appointment.
Helen is fantastic, professional and always on time. I am on the mainland half the time and everyone always wants to know who did my eye liner. Helen is simply amazing. When it comes time to have it re-done I would not have anyone else do it.
I have partial lashes done and always have people complementing my gorgeous lashes. Her work is the best.
It's been just over a week since getting my hair cut by Richie at Etch Salon. Â After the first night (after washing) i could tell that he cut it 'right" so that it would fall to the right. Â Usually after a haircut my bangs are completely shocked and the next day they look like wana needles.
What I especially liked was the consultation prior to anything being done. Â Richie explained what he thought would be a great haircut for me after asking me about how I usually wear my hair, how much styling I do, how much time I spend on styling, etc.
An hour later I left the salon $100 plus tip lighter then when I walked in. Â I was shocked at the price because I had looked on their website and it listed the cuts as being $55 and I was prepared to pay that amount. Â In any event, I am satisfied with the cut and have decided that I will utilize their free bang trim service and see how long I can stretch the time before needing to get a full cut. Â Wish me luck!
I go to HELEN cause she is awesome! She has done my eyebrows and its great cause I don't feel anything pain! She has done my eyelashes. Â Every time I have done them I have gotten compliments every day. Its not expensive where you can't afford it and its not one of those cheap places that you might get a disease from. Helen is sweet, local, and very sociable so its not awkward. She is behind sometimes but this happens at every salon I go to.
Review Source:This review is about Helen over at Etch Salon (not about any of the other salon people as I did not get any service from them).
I previously had my eyeliner tattoo'd and saw a friend of mine's who's eyeliner tattoo'd was a darker black. She recommended I get them from Helen. Being from the mainland, Helen fit me into her schedule. She was very patient with me and explained to me what was going on and what to expect step-by-step. She was very professional and courteous and was empathetic when you are getting something as painful as permanent eyeliner. Which is another thing, my prior eyeliner lady took three hours and it was so stressful on my eyes that my eyes were swollen up to three days after. Not with Helen, both eyes only took about an hour and I was on the plane back to the mainland the next day with hardly any noticeable swelling.
My eyes are still in the healing process, but I can already tell that my permanent eyeliner experience with Helen is a better one. Minimal swelling, beautiful color, and she has a steady hand and will do the eyeliner that you like (I like mine thick with a flirty tail).
If you're thinking about getting permanent eyeliner done, Helen is your girl.
My stylist moved over to Etch from Chop (they closed) and I stopped by for my first visit to Etch yesterday. Â So far, everything has been great! Â The salon space is a bit smaller than other locations but everything is clean and modern. Â It can get a bit cramped (only complaint inside) and the parking lot is way too rough on the suspension. Â I cannot comment on any of the other stylists but the folks who were there with me were happy with their cuts/color. Â The staff were all friendly and fun and it was a welcoming place to go.
Review Source:i'm super bummed. i LOVE how richie does my hair buttttttt lemme break it down...
so my friend liked my new hair cut and color from richie so she made an appointment... they had to fix her color several times and richie said it was because they are not accustomed to haole hair. Â lame excuse. Â each time they charged her $$$, even though it was their mistake.
then my friend tells me that richie's assistant would NOT stop harassing her about me. Â she kept prying and asking my friend questions like: how much $ does she make? how does she afford this and that? what does she do?
um. totally inappropriate. plus, why not ask me? why pry info from my friend???? What in the world made her think my friend would just blab about me without reservation????
I always wondered how most people can afford richie since he is more expensive (at LEAST double the $) than any other salon I've ever been to in honolulu... most people in Hawaii don't really throw a four/five hundred for their hair. Â I always gritted my teeth and paid.. cause I love what he does... but now.. i'm pretty sure he's over charging me because he thinks "i can afford it"... seriously... what else am I to assume since his assistant was harassing my friend about my finances?
I've been nothing but a loyal customer, raving about my stylist.
I feel completely betrayed. and bummed. cause my roots are growing out and i need to find someone amazing but fair. Â
(1) It sucks feeling like you've been ripped off.
(2) My recommendation turned out to be embarrassing and a hassle (both time consuming and a financial inconvenience for my friend)
(3) I feel betrayed. hair stylists should reward loyal clients (I even followed him from his last salon to his new location!) not USE them. remember i've been seeing him for almost 2 1/2 years now
(4) seriously inappropriate assistant.
But my rating is ONLY for this experience from richie. Â if you don't mind the things and qualities I individually expect from my hairstylist by all means make an appt. with richie. Â he's fabulous at what he does. Â just not right for me.
i've never tried any of the other stylists, but i heard they're great. Â Someone I know went to eddie and her hair came out fab.
ughhhh im so BUMMMMMED
