Always wanted to try this since I'm too practical and too chicken to get an actual tattoo!

Kona Henna Studio is professional, friendly and helpful.  My tattoo artist (I'm sorry I didn't get her name, shaved head with long braids) was so nice and totally got what I wanted!  She gave me a price quote and time estimate before starting.  She worked fast and clean and my henna was AWESOME from wrist to forefinger!  I was so happy with the design and the outcome!  Next time I'm going to do more!

Definitely recommend Kona Henna Studio for great work, great artistry, collaboration with the customer, great suggestions, fast work, and kamaaina discount!

And you get really nice henna art. I told the artist  generally what shape I wanted. And have her free range for the overall design. And she did a beautiful design for me!! Thank you Kona henna!! Sad I'm on Oahu...id go back for more henna!

The artists are both talented and personable. Make this a stop on your Hawaiian vacation.

My husband and I got some henna tattoos on our legs done by Mindy. I got some plumeria flowers which she stenciled in and she did some freehand swirls. My husband got some tribal art. We both loved how they turned out and I am getting tons of compliments on how beautiful it looks.

Mindy is an amazing artist and so sweet! My husband had a lot of questions about what some of the tribal designs meant and she was very knowledgeable. She didn't mind sticking around for about half an hour after they were closed to finish us up. She even put a stencil of a turtle on my 3-year-old son's knee, per his request, so he could match us.

It a great souvenir to remind us of Hawaii even weeks after we were there :)

After waiting patiently with my daughters for the woman doing the henna  to complete two people in front of me.  I noticed a haole man who walked in after us.  He flipped through the books of designs picked one and paid for it.  The woman doing the designs had already told me that there was one person in front, and that was the woman she was working on.  After she completed the woman, she asked my daughters what designs they wanted, and they told her.  My oldest daughter went up into the chair to get her design done.  The woman cleaned the area to begin the design and then abruptly stopped.

She was then told my daughter that the haole man who walked in after us was going to get his done first.  My daughter got down and employee began working on his design.  I was flabbergasted.  This type of behavior went out in the 50's.  By making my daughters wait, they lost not two people, they lost three as I was going to get one done also.  We walked out.  Horrible customer service.  The woman ran after us out of the store...all apologetic.  I would never recommend anyone to ever patronize their store, no matter how good they are.  Any store which practices this type of business practice during this day and time should not be in business.  There are multiple other places to have a henna done in Hawai'i.  I would never go back there again.

I've gotten henna tattoos a few times from Kona Henna Studio.  The earlier ones were small designs taken from their catalogue of patterns.  This week, however, I asked for something more complex -- a large Polynesian-style tattoo covering most of my upper arm.  After I referred to a photo on the store web site, Robin did a beautiful job of applying the henna freehand in the spirit of the photograph, but modified somewhat and customized to the shape of my arm.  A large custom tattoo takes quite a while to apply, but it was amazing to watch the pattern come to life under Robin's skillful hands.  The second interesting part of the process comes a few hours later when the henna paste comes off.  At first, the tattoo looks pale orange and rather unimpressive, but it darkens substantially in just a few more hours, and becomes a rich brown after one or two days.  (Of course, the details depend on one's skin and the part of the body on which the henna is applied.)

Henna creates a perfect tattoo for people who don't want a real one, because it fades after two to four weeks -- the fun of a tattoo without the commitment.

I was hesitant to get my first henna tattoo because I had read some horror stories about allergic reactions.  It turns out that the bad reactions come from something called "black henna," which is not henna at all.  You should never allow anybody to apply black henna to your skin; but Kona Henna Studio uses natural henna, which has a long history of safe use.

I love their work; I've gone a couple of times when I was in town and have been very happy w/ the results.  I like the traditional Indian patterns and love watching them free-hand the design.  I get so many compliments when I'm back on Oahu.  Let's hope they set up shop here soon!

The experience was fun. There were five of us and picking the Right one out then watching as they applied it was cool. I think that is really the best part. the result is just okay. Mine was barely noticeable and the others were better. They last about a week.

I got a great tattoo here on my vacation. The lady who did it was a good artist. I just told her how much I wanted to spend, gave her a general description of what I liked and showed her some pictures out of the book, she took it from there. She was great with taking feedback and direction while she was working too. I have had the tattoo for a week now and it's still going strong.

I've wanted to get a Henna tattoo for a while, but was always wary of street vendors.  I mean, what can you do if something goes wrong?  I liked the idea of Kona Henna because it's an actual establishment that's been in business fora long time.

My husband and I walked by Kona Henna a few times and saw the quality of work that Robin was doing.  My husband was the first to commit to the idea; he wanted a tribal arm band.  After a little hemming and hawing I decided to go for it, too; I decided on an orchid, since we were on the "Orchid Isle."  Robin came up with a design even more beautiful than I imagined!

Robin and Keelee are knowledgeable and friendly.  If you're hesitant, Kona Henna is just the place to make you feel at ease.

I'm so happy to have my little reminder of Kailua Town and I can't wait to get back to Kona Henna (as well as the rest of the Big Island)!!!

Love this place, I wish I lived nearer so I could get one more often!

Before you go, think about where are you getting the paste applied.  Dress accordingly, you'll need to keep the paste on for at least and half hour and preferably longer.  Also, no swimming for 3-4 hours, so plan ahead.

While visiting Hawaii me and my mom decided to get Henna Tattoos! This place is by far the best Henna Studio i have seen in the area, not only are the prices reasonable for a very touristy area, the artist Maria does AMAZING work. If you go on her website all the pictures are done by her, she is a true artist i got henna done on the palm of my hand but not only is it holding up and has gotten pretty dark it looks beautiful! Definitely come try this place out!

I was there with my daughter and we both got a tatoo. After that everybody was looking at it and asking where I got it! Thank you so much for such a quality work!

Ok, so although it can seem super cheesy, henna tattoos and plumeria flowers in your hair (plastic ones from the ABC store are perfectly acceptable) are standard practice for a tourist in Hawaii.  Who am I to screw with the status quo?

While vacationing on the big Island, friends and I walked past this place a few times before one of us finally admitted that we wanted a tattoo. At that point it was on.

I went for the modest foot tatoo of a bee buzzing around some flowers, (partially my own design) friends went for a turtle design and a tramp stamp.

The shop is run by Maria and Robin, both friendly and knowledgeable. Our designs were done free hand and we were in and out of the chair within minutes. The procedure is painless and last about a month if you care for it correctly. For me that meant not washing the top of my foot...I know, too much information but just in case you were wondering. Only 4 stars this time, because I also got a cute little gekco on my shoulder that didn't take, even though I did everything I was directed to do.

Kona is a very chill town and if you happen to visit, give these girls a holler...I saw a lot of guys in there too, so it's not only for women.

    Aloha!

Let's be honest - I'm a tattoo sissy.  While I want one, I don't really, and I wish they made 2 year tattoos as I look back in time at the tattoos I would have got, and see that all choices would have been bad ones.

That said, my son (4) and I on vacation rocked henna shark tattoos from Kona Henna Studio on the main drag, and had a blast as a result.  Let's mention that
1 - it takes only minutes to get one
2 - it's on the main drag and better than the junk shops
3 - Maria is super nice

    Do it.

Henna is a fun thing to try if you are considering a real tattoo (or if you would NEVER consider a real tattoo for that matter) since it gives you the same effect in a safe, painless, temporary way.  Henna feels really good and smells nice- it cools the skin which is a pleasant spa-like treat in warm Kailua-Kona.  Maria & Kili are really talented artists who can draw anything you can dream up.
I love having my hands painted.
You will also find lots of great hemp products from plantable stationary to clothing and jewelry to candles and lip balms.  They also sell the most wonderful lavendar oil for scenting your home.
I really like their cute skirts and children's clothes.
They can also educate you on the difference between hemp and marijuana.  The Hemp used for their products is not used for narcotic purposes but rather is a bamboo/grass that is a fast regenerating renewable resource that can be used for just about anything we can use tree or cotton products for.  It creates environmentally friendly and high quality products that most people are not familiar with.
I think most people think of hemp fabric as being rough like burlap but many of their clothing pieces are smooth like cashmere and breathe better than cotton- most men won't go back to cotton after experiencing a hemp t-shirt because it just feels so much nicer.  So check them out and give it a try.
Going out for henna tattoos makes a fun and different activity to do with a group of friends- they will even stay open late for you if you make an appointment.  There is a hang-out area with a comfy futon where everyone can hang out while taking turns with the henna artist.
