My boyfriend won't write this so I will.
DO NOT GO TO CHRIS.
We go in for a drop in around 9 pm at night, no one is there. Whatever. Luckily a woman working in a nearby shop is taking her trash out and says that they are probably getting food. We wait. Chris comes meandering back, and can't take my boyfriend that night. No problem there, we expected that. We set up an appointment for the following day.
We get there just on time, and NO ONE IS IN THE SHOP AGAIN! It's locked, lights out. We call the front desk twice, hang around for ten minutes and are about to leave when Chris comes and unlocks the door. He was "going to the bathroom".
So we go inside and he tells us to wait while he sets up shop. This takes about 30 minutes. Shouldn't you do that BEFORE you have an appointment? By this time is is 12:40 and our appointment was at 12:00. We are the only ones in the shop btw. I have looked at every tattoo on the while twice by now.
He finally comes back out and asks what my boyfriend wants. Boyfriend already has it sketched but explains that he wants it a certain size, so the guy goes and draws it. Takes forever, but I get that those things can take a while. Comes back, has drawn it too big, so boyfriend asks him to draw it smaller. He's kind of grouchy about that. Quotes something outlandish, I am taken aback, but my it's my boyfriend's first tattoo and he figures he can talk to him after. He just didn't want to keep pissing off Mr. Sensitive.
Finally comes back again and all is good with the drawing, so he lets us go sit in the chair while he goes and TAKES A SMOKE BREAK. The appointment was at 12:00, it's now probably 1:20.
He comes back and tattoos my boyfriend, doesn't speak the entire time. Doesn't ask him how it feels, if he is okay, nothing. I try to make small talk or joke around 1 or 2 times but he's straight faced.
To put it in perspective, the tattoo is a five pointed star (not filled) inside of a two circles (also not filled in) with one tiny symbol (smaller than my pinky nail) between each of the star's points. It's about the size of an apple. It took him 40 minutes, (which it should) to tattoo and he wanted $120 for it. His best friend went to the same shop, but Liz tattooed him, for half the price (even though the tattoo was about 1.5 times as big, shaded, and colored). Basically 5 straight lines, 2 circles, and 5 small symbols.
The website says the hourly rate is $60/hour and I brought this up and he mumbles something about "straight lines being hard to do" and "that was a different artist's hourly rate". Bullshit. It would say that on the website if they all have hourly rates that are different because each artist has their own page. But there was nothing we could do.
I really doubt your hourly rate or store minimum is $120/hr, unless you were charging us while you took your smoke break? Unprofessional and just plain rude.
And my boyfriend STILL tipped him.
CHRIS:
- rude
- dismissive
- rips you off
- unwelcoming
- late
- lies
Go to Liz.
Wonderful shop! All of my tattoos were done by Liz and I WILL be going back in the future. Most importantly, they are extremely clean and really seem to make that a priority. Everything in the shop is well-done, included the framing and hanging of artwork on the walls and all the signs inside and out.
Liz did tattoos on four of us in the same day, and they were fantastic. Each was personalized in little ways that left us with pieces that go together but aren't the exact same thing. She is fantastic about adding little touches that no one else thinks of (Does your pin-up tattoo have toenail polish on? Didn't think so!).
Over-all, everyone there is awesome and so is the shop itself.
Came to Relentless for my first tattoo and couldn't be more pleased. Liz was amazing, accommodating, extremely professional and polite. The shop is super clean and comfortable. My sister, aunt and I all came in together and Liz drew the perfect tattoo for each of us. I would recommend this shop to anyone, and frankly I can't wait to visit again!!!
Review Source:I got 3 tattoos done there unfortunately. Never going back. The first one I got there I was very happy with. It was small with not a lot of detail so kinda hard to mess up (done by Liz) then second one there done by big chuck and it wasn't bad I but he has a heavy hand and it hurt much more than it should have.
Third one was a DISASTER. It was a coverup so bad to begin with. I was talking with Liz about what to get over the old ugly work and we came up with a rose which I was happy with. I wanted the rose purple because that is my favorite color and she all but refused to do it purple, she wanted it blue. So I got it blue and you could still see the underlying work. Since then I have added to it and the other work is now hidden completely. When I told her I was unhappy that I could still see the other work she said that other people can't see it so its ok!! Seriously?!?! I can see it!! That's what matters is that I like it because its on my body!! Gerr.
Last thing that I am unhappy with about at that shop And what ultimately made me seek another artist was I went in there for a very meaningful family piece that I have been wanting for a while. It was originally  drawn for my thigh but I wanted to put it on my upper arm and Liz said that the amount of detail I wanted (the sun from the sublime, 40 oz to freedom album) could not be done on my arm, so I found someone who was capable of intricate detail that Liz obviously isn't talented enough to do.
I switched to Troy at bonehead and he has fixed all Liz's mistakes and added my very sentimental family piece and I couldn't be happier.
I just got back from my first tattoo done at this parlor (fifth overall). Chris was my tattoo artist. I have to say, I was impressed with the place- the decor, design, clean feeling of sterility, etc.. The framed art on the walls (depicting tattoos, of course) were all perfectly spaced and level- something I noticed as being indicative of their attention to detail, which is a good thing to observe inside a tattoo parlor!
Chris was great- he was very nice and inviting. I showed him what I wanted (a two-clause sentence wrapping around my forearm) and he helped me decide exactly how to get it done (re: font size, spacing, etc.). When all was said and done, it turned out exactly as I had imagined it! I put a lot of trust into the tattoo artists to really draw out exactly what I want, and their experience allows for that. Since I ended up with just what I had envisioned, it was clear Chris was very able to speak from experience and know how to get the results I wanted.
I must also point out he is great with a needle! I like to think I have a high tolerance for pain and that tattooing is a pain I'm used to, but, despite that, this was the least painful tattoo I've ever received (almost shockingly so...I practically fell asleep on the chair!). I have a tattoo exactly opposite my left forearm on the right and I remember that one hurting a LOT.
He was also very attentive to how I was feeling, asking me if I was alright during the work and reminding me it was ok to take breaks if I needed to.
Price-wise, I thought it was very reasonable. In fact, it was less than I anticipated! Chris quoted the work beforehand in a range of prices that he explained ultimately depended on how long it took. So there's no surprises when you go to pay. Â
I have been pleased by the work I had done at Urban Body, and honestly, I only chose Relentless because it was close to my house, a friend said they had gotten one there, and because Yelp showed nothing but 5-star reviews. Truth is, they do deserve five stars (and I have a feeling the other artists are also very good at what they do). And it's just another great example of the power of Yelp and recommendations! I will pretty much keep going to Chris for as long as I live in Sacramento.
Originally, I gave this shop a try because I had inherited a gift certificate that would otherwise not been used. I'm so glad that I took that chance and walked through the door. From the moment you walk in, you notice the smell. Its that unmistakable scent of sterile cleanliness. They really take the time to keep out that "scummy" atmosphere that a lot of tattoo shops fall into.
I've only ever been worked on by Chris so I can't really comment on the other artists technique or style too much. I did watch Liz work a few times and she's totally professional and talented. I've spent many hours on Chris's chair. He is exactly what I had been looking for in an artist. He doesn't waste your time by taking needless breaks. The guy can put off a smoke break like a gawd damned champ! When I bring him artwork that needs to be redrawn for tattoo purposes, he takes the time to understand what the point of the art is. He doesn't needlessly insert elements just because he feels like it. Also, very importantly, he is open to suggestions. Â
He has done both my calves from beginning to end. I've spent around 20 hours under his needle. My friends, family, and co-workers have repeatedly said they are some of the best ink work they have ever seen. Nothing but rave reviews.
Do yourself a favor and visit Relentless. If you pick Chris, you can't go wrong. Just don't take up ALL his time, I still have more work to get done.
So, after thinking about getting a tattoo for a while, a friend referred me to Relentless. Making my appointment was very reassuring --all my questions were answered, and the young lady I spoke with was extremely polite and knowledgeable. The shop itself is immaculately clean, full of all kinds of cool tattoo art. My tattoo artist was Hampton--he put me at ease and helped me out with an even better idea for a tattoo then I could have imagined! Â I've since referred several of my co-workers. Two made appointments, and they both got tattoos by Liz. They loved her, the shop and most of all were really excited how cool their tattoos turned out!
Review Source:Love this place! Went there for my first tattoo and only had a basic idea but nothing for certain. So the artist sketched out something based on my ideas and it rocked! Even though I was nervous they made sure I was confortable. Everything was very clean, every person I talked to that worked there was very nice and friendly. I read all the reviews prior to this and it seems like they must have went to a different place. THIS PLACE ROCKS!
PS: If your tat got infected, that sounds like it was from you not properly taking care of it, you can't slander that back to the shop, shame shame!
Ive been to lots of shops all over and now I always come here to get my work done .. It's by far the BEST tattoo artwork I have on my body .
Liz miller is VERY talented ... She takes my ideas and runs with it! very original style and technique.
Everywhere I go people ask where I get my tattoos done and I hand them a business card and tell them it's worth the drive ( I live about an hour away from Sacramento) that itself just shows that it's worth it .
They pride themselves in cleanliness and are very professional.
I found everyone to be great here. I am a wheelchair user so finding a shop that I could fit into and be comfortable was a big deal for me. I also came in because Brian who answered the phone was very nice and he answered all my questions and made me feel totally comfortable about coming in. Mark did my tattoo and he made me feel at ease about getting my first tattoo he even came in on his day off to do tattoos for my sister and I. I brought my service dog with me and they were very cool about her hanging out by the couch with my Mom, and friend. As you can see I really like this shop and all who work there.
Review Source:The staff is always friendly here and I have nothing but the best experience.
The shop is very clean, comfortable, and most of all, it is run by some locals who are into music, art, and keeping Sacramento alive.
I recommend strolling by to review the portfolios. Â No snobs here, just honest artists who will listen to what you have to say so they get it right.
I got a great tattoo here a few weeks ago, and I will be back very very soon.
