I am visiting a friend in Portland, and decided to get some work done as I have not gotten a tattoo in Portland yet.  I called and spoke to Ryan Jacob Smith and was able to accommodate me as a walk-in.  He was very pleasant and did a great job with the lines and making sure everything was symmetrical.  2 GREAT things about Ryan:

    1.  Does not charge a "minimum amount"  for tattoos and does not go "per hour".  My tattoo only took 45 minutes and he charged me $80!  Hello $20 tip!!

    2.  I designed my own tattoo and he was able to print it off after I emailed it to him.  Some artists want control over the design and want to do the tattoo their way.  Ryan respected the fact that this was my design and did not push me to get something that he wanted to do.  VERY valuable in this day and age.  I have had some bad experiences with other artists that disagreed with my designs i wanted.

Overall, it was a great experience.  The work area was very clean and conversation was pleasant.  This shop is close to downtown Portland and a 15 minute bus-ride.   I highly recommend Ryan and definitely hit this place up if you want to get some ink while in Portland.

I came here yesterday to get a tattoo from Alice.  I'd had a few ideas of what I thought I'd like, and just asked her to come up with something that would incorporate my ideas but stay true to her style.  I am so happy with the final result, and it was really pleasant chatting with her for four hours while she worked.  Go here!

Please refrain from getting a tattoo from jared hunter. He is stubborn and will not listening to what you have to say. I wanted a long feather with details and i ended up with a blunt looking feather that looks like a 5 year old drew it. I also wanted lettering done, i told jared i want this font i brought the paper and showed him exactly what i wanted he said that tattoos wont and cant look like that. What a dissapoinment. I am now going to have to get a complete cover up on my arm. Thank you anatomy tattoo for wasting my time. Not to mention the other tattoo artists think they are so hard core they wont even talk to you. do not go there. jareds tattoo's look cheap

Been meaning to write a review for a while! I don't Yelp much anymore, but I do write reviews when I think reviews are due.

Justin Dion has done my leg, entire full sleeve on my right arm and a half sleeve on my left arm and they are amazing! I constantly get stopped on the street with people looking at my tattoos. It's almost gotten to the point where I want to wear long sleeves so I don't get harassed! Haha! But, they are beautiful and I am proud to wear them for life.

I did stray from Justin once and go to another shop, and now I'm having him re-do the other tattoo because I know he will make it look a billion times better. His line work is insanely clean, straight and his colors are so bold and bright. I have had some of his work for about 3 years and it looks brand new. I constantly get asked if I JUST got it.

The other artists in this shop are so nice, too. It's such a comfortable environment to get tattooed in. I know there are dozens of shops in Portland. But if you want to go somewhere that is unpretentious, cool, and has great artists, you should definitely check this place out.

On a recent trip to Portland, my husband and I were looking to get tattooed. We visited one shop, Icon, and were told they didn't have any openings. The nice women at Icon recommended we check out Anatomy. They were even kind enough to call over to make appointments on our behalf.

Upon arrival at Anatomy, we were greeted by several guys and then introduced to our artist. My husband and I were both tattooed by Justin. He was extremely friendly and easy going. After some discussion over our reference photos, Justin began sketching our tattoos, all the while having a friendly discussion with us. The end result was fantastic. I couldn't be happier with my visit to Anatomy. Justin is quick, precise and light handed.

Several of my tattoos were done here by a guy named Ed. Ed sadly no longer works at Anatomy but all of the artists are great. I highly recommend coming in and taking a look at the different portfolios especially if you are looking for artists that specialize in "old school" looking tattoos.

The prices are fair and of course my tattoos look fantastic. I have had my half sleve and back tattoo for about 7 years now and the color still looks great!

Who knew pineapples could rock so hard?
My guy and I recently got hitched and took our honeymoon in Maui - to commemorate the event we decided to get matching pineapple tattoos. I have been to Anatomy before and loved my experience, so it was natural to go back for the new artwork. We thought a request for matching pineapple tattoos would be met with an eye-roll and "wow, that's lame" - however - Jared was super excited to do them for us, and its always fun to get a tattoo from someone who actually wants to be giving you that tattoo. As was my impression before, the shop is not intimidating, the artist are friendly and helpful. Last time I had Lucky (awesome), this time we had Jared who was funny, conversational, considerate, and talented. We didn't give him much to go on - just that we wanted pineapples - based on the other tattoos I have he came up with a colorful, fun, old school design that we could not be happier with. Not to mention, if you have a big - seemingly- random pineapple tattooed to your arm, people notice. Its been a day and I have already gotten tons of compliments on it. Thanks Anatomy, and Jared especially - you made all of my pineapple/tattoo dreams come true.

I've been going to Anatomy for over 3 years and have received close to a dozen tattoos from Adam at this point. I have plans made to get many, many more from the anatomy artists.

You wont find a friendlier or more talented group of people.

since i had such a wonderful experience getting pierced here i decided to have some additional work done. i've had tattoos done by both jared and the owner adam, all of which are extraordinary and i get complimented on them regularly. though i love my artwork, the employees are what really make this shop. each of them (a whole 4!) are genuine, non.pretentious, generous individuals. the shop recently donated $300 to a charaity event for the american cancer society a friend of my mine put together. i often stop in just to say hi when i'm in the neighborhood and i always feel welcome, no matter how busy they are. but seriously, i can not say enough about how much i love these guys!

Just got my tattoo from Adam and it's the most amazing tattoo ever.  I will be back soon to add more and complete my full sleeve (then will be doing my other one) and I will ONLY be having Adam do it.  He's amazing!  Going to see if I can add my photo... you gotta see it, it's really amazing!  Mindy

I'm a big weenie... and deathly afraid of needles.  A few years back, I got a recommendation for Painless Steel (now Anatomy) from a friend and made an appointment with Ed.  From that first tattoo, Ed has been my guy.  He designed my sleeve, and helped me save a lot of money on the work.  He also shares my hatred for frat boy tribal bands, so you know he's money.

I have been getting tattoos from Lucky, who now works at Anatomy for the past 10 years. He is great and I highly recommend him.

I chose Anatomy Tattoo because it used to be Painless Steel and I'd had good luck with their shop in Missoula, MT.  I was a little disappointed to learn it wasn't Painless anymore, but looked at Ed's portfolio, talked to him about the design I wanted, and felt that he would be a good artist regardless of what the shop was called.  So I made my appt and left a crude mock-up of my idea for a tattoo.  We talked a little about possible designs, but I was very open to his ideas about how the end product would look as long as it incorporated 3 elements.  At my appt he showed me the design.  I was so impressed--- I was amazed.  His design was so much better looking than I could have imagined.  At that point I knew I'd found a good artist and the right one for my tattoo that I'd been wanting/planning for almost a year.
I had a 4-hour appt but he ended up only going for 2 hours, which was plenty.  He finished the outline of the entire thing and I'll go back for the shading in a week to 10 days.
I know it's hard for smaller, less known shops to get customers in a business where word of mouth is the best advertising, so I want people to know that if you go to Anatomy Tattoo you will be very happy with the tattoo you get.  Ed was my artist and I will definitely be going back for any future tattoos.
