Ment to write this a little while ago but now is better than never! My girlfriend and I decided to spontaneously go get tattoos last monday evening. Went on yelp and found several good reviews on tattoo parlors around san diego and decided to give Funhouse a call. The gentleman on the phone at the time was very helpful and said that one of the artists would be available for us to do a walk in. The place is CLEAN and bright which gives it a nice feel. They had some good music playing as well. We were lucky enough to have Markus free to tattoo us on such short notice. He is very nice and laid back. Working on my gf's tattoo first he was very patient in designing it exactly how she wanted it. After her I told him the idea I wanted and he quickly drew up exactly what I wanted. Markus is very precise with his lines and cares for his customers and their tattoos. We are extremely happy with our tattoos and plan on coming back to him in the future. As for the whole shop it is like I said very clean and the atmosphere is nice and laidback. Though we only met 2 of the artists,their staff is very nice and ofcourse talented. I would definitely recommend Funhouse tattoos to anyone of my friends, family, and/or strangers!
Review Source:Much like there are two sides of a coin and two opinions on the quality of Mumford & Sons, there are two opinions on tattoos.
Mine is simply, if you want them and you know you want them, get them.
This place is a really stand-up professional joint from my experience. In fact, it's one of the few reasons I'd venture back to the part of town known as PB.
Some of the perks are as follows:
* Cool/interesting/personally tailored booths.
* Fun Decor(heh, I suppose with a name like Funhouse that's a given)
* The entire staff is friendly. You know how when you over hear the BOH staff at a restaurant shooting the crap during the downtime rather than bickering over who's turn it is to clean the sink? It gives you a good vibe. This place has a great staff that doesn't seem pretentious or petty. They handle work like champs.
* Affordable rates for a pro shop. I got 14 letters done in less than an hour.
* The place just feels cleaner than half of the doctors offices I've been in.
* A decent soundtrack to occupy your mind while your epidermis gets pierced 100's of times a minute.
* No lingering smell of party/booze/lovin'/drugs/dead mice. No urgency, no attitudes, no problems whatsoever.
* Up-frontness. Honesty. Appointments. Comfort.
* Some seriously talented artists. Considering my stick figures look more like jail-drawn twig people, I have immense respect for folks with bonafide artistic talent.
The drawbacks:
Uhhhh, they don't have a pool table? Come to think of it, you can walk right down the street and hit up Society if your looking to shoot pool. This is a tattoo parlor, not a pool hall.
  I recently got some ink done by Markus. He was friendly, solidly cool, professional, quick(but not rushed), and spot on. Everyone has their favorites. Nonetheless, I was immensely satisfied with his attitude and the quality of work done. Looks like the letters came straight off of a printing press. Scratch that, better than most printing presses.
If you're in the market for a new guy/studio, give this place a shot. Yelp even has a special going on at the time of writing that will help out with the rates. $115 for 150 of store credit, allegedly.
HEY YELP------ MAKE SURE YOU PAY THEM!!!
Walked in yesterday on a whim to get my first tattoo. Â The place was clean and not crowded. Â I got paired up with Markus, who promptly worked out my sketch. Â Me being a first-timer, he was gentle and quick (without sacrificing quality) - not to mention a really interesting guy! Â All the while, making sure that I was perfectly happy and comfortable with the size, placement, etc. of the piece. Â I've already gotten handfuls of compliments on his beautiful line work and the price was very reasonable. Â I'll definitely be coming back here for my next tattoo!!
Review Source:I'm a perfectionist and when it comes to tattoos I'm super picky and nervous. I got my 2nd tattoo done here and all I can say is WOW. Clean, professional, chill, and can I say PROFESSIONAL?! Markus was my tattoo artist and he was awesome! I came in with an idea in mind and just told him my vision. In less than a week Markus had drawn my long awaited dream tattoo. I got it done on my right arm, a lot bigger than my first. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and it turned out PERFECT. Like the reviews before me, after you come to Funhouse you will never want to go anywhere else again. Thank you to Markus and Funhouse tattoo!
Review Source:I got my tattoo as a birthday present, but I wasn't sure which design I wanted. Luckily Paul helped me design a really cool tattoo. Â I got 2 chinese characters, an infinity loop with the word love & 4 birds. Â I LOVE MY TATTOO! I will definitely come back here for my next tattoo :)
Paul is the best!
Growing up, I had a huge port wine stain on my forearm. While I wasn't exactly ashamed of it and needed it covered, I figured it would be a good place to start and get my first (big) tattoo piece.
I went over their portfolios and decided that Paulie had great pieces, so I booked an appointment with him. We decided on this beautiful peony piece with water and wind elements along with some cherry blossoms. I have one more session to go, but every time I go it's such a great experience.
I usually come by the shop at night around 6 or 7. By this time, it's very mellow. Fun music playing even though it's not my style. You don't feel worried or scared at all since it's such a great environment and the artists are very careful about sanitation/cleanliness. My tattoo heals wonderfully every time I come back from a sesh. I just slap some aquaphor on when it starts peeling, some unscented lotion when it's healing better, and then my skin heals perfectly within the week. Don't scratch, never scratch!
Paulie is really patient and fun to talk to. I talk A LOT to keep my mind off the pain, and Paulie always is a willing victim of listening to me blab for the two hours I'm there. He's a great artist and people have been approaching me ever since I got the outline done. Now that it's mostly finished (just need to shade in the wind elements) I have people asking me where I went every time I go out in public. I now sincerely want to take the piece into a full sleeve when I have the time.
Don't waste your time wondering if you should spend the money on a tattoo. The answer is yes, it's worth it. I'm not going to any other shop! Paulie is awesome sauce and has possibly made me addicted to tattoos for life...
Used a Yelp deal here and it was well worth it.
Marcus is a cool, talented dude. He took the drawing of the shadows of a cross that I had prepared and adjusted it to make it look like paintbrush strokes. He took a moment to sketch it out. Didn't take long at all. He made sure I was confident with the tat throughout the entire time. Clean and chill atmosphere.
I heart Funhouse Tattoos!!! Everyone is so down to earth and extremely talented. Love going to their studio and everything is clean and organized... not intimidating or scary like some other tattoo shops I've been to. Each artist has a specialty so when visiting, one will most likely refer you to a master artist that will ink your unique tattoo.
Skott worked on my first (ever) tattoo and because I just loved the experience, I came back for a second tattoo and was referred to Seth. Seth is, in my opinion, the coolest tattoo artist I've ever met. He's really gentle with his hands that having my side rib tattoo'ed didn't hurt as I anticipated (but I was a bit sore a day or two later). Awesome awesome place to go for great ink!!
I have been using this shop for almost two years now and have experience with two of their amazing artists. Paulie and Roger. Both are extremely talented in tattooing and in other mediums. Paulie has done the most work for me and specializes in traditional, which I love! No matter the style you are seeking this shop has an artist that can create what you have in mind! They aren't just one of those shops where you walk-in and who ever is there inks you. They will direct you to the best person for the tattoo. If you request Polynesian they will send you to Seth. You want a portriat? Roger is your man! Marcus is amazing with surreal and realism! I've seen all these guys do amazing work during my trips to Funhouse! Highly recommend this shop and all of their artists.
Review Source:yesterday was my appointment to get a chest piece done with Daniel Thompson. I already was excited to have him for my artist because of the enthusiasm he shared with me for my tattoo at our consultation. He is such a nice guy and was genuinely excited to start working on the design, which made me all the happier! He did a beautifully detailed drawing and perfectly placed it and then went to work. I was a little nervous for the pain but he has a steady hand, and was always making sure i was comfortable. it turned out better than i could have imagined! He even spent extra time on it to get all the details the way we wanted it, and I'm glad he did. He is an  amazing artist, and incredibly nice! I'm definitely going back to him for more work.
Review Source:Just got my first tattoo tonight. Had been thinking about it for a few months but tonight's decision was spur of the moment. I'd found a pic of exactly what I wanted and Marcus helped me agree on the right size to show off the best detail. He had to tweak it a bit so it looked the best and even though it's larger than I initially wanted it really looks awesome. Â I'm glad he discussed why the bigger size was best, I don't think I'd be as happy with it as I am if it was smaller and less detailed.
Review Source:Went back to Funhouse two weekends ago and had another awesome experience. Â I put in 3 more hours with Paulie (i think that makes it 8+ now), got three tattoos done, and each one came out equally awesome. Â I'll never go to anyone else. Â He's top-notch. Â
The shop is clean, all of the artists are extremely friendly and talented, and everyone engages in friendly banter while working/getting worked on...just a great atmosphere all around.
If you want a tattoo, go to Funhouse. Â Thank me later!
Went with my son to get his first tattoo. Â Likes the shop, it's clean and the staff is very nice. Â His artist spent lots of time with my son to ensure his tat was the right size and exactly how he wanted it. Â However my son had one spot that didn't heal properly and the line is a bit off because of it. Â It's a very small section and not really noticeable, so not sure if he'll go back to have it touched up. Â Over all, it was a great experience. Â I would definitely go back!
Review Source:I got my 5th tattoo here a couple months ago, this being the 4th shop I've gone to. It's a clean shop and the staff are nice enough, but the most simple tattoo I have shouldn't have turned out the worst. A few spots in the lines are misshapen, the one color I have is already fading, but most importantly because it was made too deep in a few spots, there's scarring. I took care of this tattoo the same as my others, using the same potion, and it took longer to heal. I'm prettty disappointed.. I won't be back nor would I recommend this place to anyone.
Review Source:Oh my God. Once you have a tattoo here, you'll never be satisfied anywhere else. You will instantly notice how crappy everyone else's tattoos look because these guys are amazing with their details. The place is super clean and fun to hang out at. I enjoy just stopping by to chat with the artists. My wife and I have used Skott, who can recreate anything you want and also shade to perfection. His style is bold lines and comic book type drawings, which suites me. Other artists are more imaginative with colors and mythology, and they also will do paintings for commission if you ask. Skott does free touchups if your tattoo didn't heal the best.
The ambience here is so laid back and friendly, even for first-timers. Just be prepared to pay about double or triple what you might at another shop, but given the fact that tattoos last your whole life, it's better to get a beautiful one here than get it screwed up somewhere else.
From the perspective of a Fine Artist and having my work reproduced onto skin, what finer compliment is there? Seth is a talented Master at tattooing and I feel honored knowing that my work is reproduced so true to its originality. Clean, professional, great ambiance and exceptionally talented artists, all come together to form the ideal location to have some ink slung if you're considering it.
Review Source:Awesome shop, with great artist! Funhouse is clean and has a great variety, you will always have a good time when your there. I got my sleeve done by Sierra and will be getting my leg done by Alonzo. They are both great artist and Alonzo's photo realistic work is AMAZING! Highly recommended shop.
Review Source:Funhouse Tattoo's is a must. Â With years of experience and an intuitive business sense Seth has created a chilled out environment of skilled artists who you can trust to provide quality work. Â When I come down from the bay area I go to Funhouse. Â If you want your work done by talented artist's Funhouse Tattoos is it.
Review Source:Totally recommend Funhouse. I had a vision of what I wanted and Seth made it happen! I wanted a Polynesian Charger Bolt and needed it done before the 1st regular season game so he came in on his day off to accommodate my superstitions. I could not be happier and am already thinking about my next tat.
Review Source:my husband & i came here bck in 2O1O bcuz he knew a guy who knew a guy & as a perfectionist & artist myself.. let me jus say.. u shouldn't get ur tat done by someone who wears glasses.. period. (unless u want ur tat to come out all thick /: ) regardless i like how it came out & he's happy w/ it.. so i guess i can't rly complain.. altho i don't wish to go back.. at least not to the same guy. overall.. the ppl who work there do a good job ^-^
Review Source:I have been going to Skott at Funhouse Tattoos since 2006 and he has done four different tattoos for me. His work and attention to detail is exceptional. Skott is awesome and always a blast to chat with when getting inked. Totally a chill dude. He had to completely change one of his sketches for me when I went in to get the work done because it wasn't what I had in mind, but he did it lickity split and it was perfect. Basically, Skott is a great artist and I highly recommend his work.
Review Source:I am REALLY happy that I got my first tattoo done at Funhouse. Â Sierra is THE MAN! Â Super talented and cool guy, and everyone else in the shop seemed nice as well. Â I am terrified of needles, but my experience at Funhouse really got me comfortable getting tattooed. Â I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a legit ink job! :)
