Dave is the best. A great artist, a very light touch, and a good personal demeanor.
He made me feel comfortable right from the first consult. I brought in my own customized artwork, and aside from a few suggestions, he did it exactly as I wanted. Unlike other artists who might impose their style on your design, Dave merely adapted it masterfully into tattoo form. He was cool and relaxed throughout, and I was surprised at how literally painless the process was... felt more like razor burn than needles. He was also cool and unfazed when I fainted early on in the process (just nodded for a few moments, not a fan of seeing my own blood).
As for his original designs and art, they're downright amazing. Very reasonably priced, too... he charged me just over half of what they were asking at a well-known place I went to on Sunset (you'd know it) for my first consult. When I started asking around for other options, I met several people who mentioned him immediately and were very happy with his work. I would echo their recommendation... and in fact, I've already talked two other friends into getting theirs done with him. And now, he's gonna be my go-to guy for future ink.
I have a lot of tattoos, (95% coverage), by lots of great artists. Dave davenport is the man I've chosen to finish most of the few spots I have left. His work exceeds my expectations every time. Plus, he's a great guy, and a pleasure to spend time with. Go see him, you won't be disappointed...
Review Source:Dave Davenport is awesome. He's done my left arm, my right calve and my chest piece...such a great guy and such awesome work. He's got a unique style that must come from his background as an illustrator and comic book artist. One thing you can say about Dave for sure is that he loves what he does and isn't happy slapping something together for a quick buck. His place is beautiful, quite, private (no getting a tattoo in a window for everyone to watch here)...it's the perfect place to get your body modification/beautification work done. Marginalized is my favorite tattoo shop.
Review Source:Over the years, I've had a fair amount of tattoo work done in both Los Angeles and New York, and I've gotta say that Dave Davenport is my all-time favorite tattoo artist, by far.
For my most recent tattoo, I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted, but I had a general idea, and I had collected a fair amount of reference materials. My man, Dave, took my materials and suggestions and distilled them into a truly beautiful final design. That alone was worth the price, but the execution of the tattoo topped even that. To say that I'm happy with the final result would be putting it mildly.
If you wanna pay an exorbitant price and be on a TV reality tattoo show or if you're into working with the "tattoo artist to the stars", there are other tattoo places you can go in this town. But if you want excellent work, fairly-priced, without any BS, Dave Davenport is your guy.
Marginalized Tattoo is the tattoo studio of Dave Davenport (aka Dogspunk). The studio occupies the area where Mr. S was before it closed. It is in the same lot as the Faultline Bar.
Obviously this review is about Dave as a tattoo artist...but Dave is also an excellent, formally trained illustrator with a background in animation. He also has published a number of comic books.
Anyway, even though I first learned of Dave on a social networking site (and got the first glimpse of his excellent portfolio) around 5 year ago,  I only met him in person when a friend of mine was getting work done the year before last. At the time I already had two full sleeves  and a chest piece  done by another artist...but was itching to expand my existing work. And, frankly, I was looking for an artist that was a little more reliable and personable then the one I was working with before.
I asked Dave to design a snake that would, essentially, go "behind" my current chest piece. Because of the nature of the existing design, I realized that there might be limitations on what could be done...well, what Dave came up with was even better than what I was expecting: I love that.
Over the next month and a half we had three sittings: an outline and two shading sessions. The finished work not only looked great, I feel it really compliments my body. And, despite the fact that my work is done by three different artists, Dave did a great job of pulling everything together into a unified whole.
During our sessions we had a wide-ranging discussion covering such (geeky) topics as contemporary comic books, H.P. Lovecraft, Â Dungeons and Dragons, werewolves and ex-boyfriends.
I recommend Dave Davenport to practically everyone I meet who is looking for an artist.
I chose Dave Davenport for my first and so far only tattoo. I first became aware of him after reading the comic book he writes and illustrates. Â I flew down to LA specifically to get a tattoo from Dave. Dave has a BA in Illustration and nine years of tattoo experience. Â My tattoo is fairly large and took about four hours to complete. Â Dave made the experience as pleasant as could be expected. Â He tried to carry on a fairly detailed, almost intellectual conversation about independent comic books while he was working on me. Â Chatting is a bit difficult at times when you are getting stuck with needles repeatedly while holding yourself in an awkward position. Â He was entertaining and it helped pass the time. Â I am very pleased with the work and did not have any complications during the healing process. Â I would definitely recommend him. Â He is currently working on sketches for a custom piece he will be tattooing on me in December.
