I recently lost my mother to cancer, and this past year has been a tough road to travel. Soon after she passed, I decided that I wanted to honor her memory with a tattoo. I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted, so I set about finding the right studio and tattoo artist to capture my vision. I came across 2 Spirit's website and was attracted by the clean design and cool insect pictures (I write a lot about insects in my job; they are endlessly fascinating to me, so I took this as a good sign). I started going through the portfolios and was impressed by the caliber of talent that existed under one roof. Roxx, Matt, Michael, and Ben: each portfolio was striking, unique, and professional, and each showcased mad skills and mind-blowing talent. Both Matt's and Michael's work resonated with me. I finally decided on Matt because the website noted that he incorporated "flora and fauna" into his work, and I wanted to incorporate elements of nature into my tattoo.
I contacted Matt by email and he got back to me quickly and we set up a consultation appointment. When I went in, I felt immediately put at ease by his calm and kind demeanor. I was also impressed with the gorgeous shop: clean, impeccably designed (someone on Yelp mentioned that it feels more like an art gallery than a tattoo shop; I echo this sentiment) and the people who worked there (everyone was friendly, professional, and down-to-earth). We sat down and went through my ideas--a rose in the style of an engraving coupled with my mother's handwriting--and talked it out. Matt was very knowledgeable and I appreciated that he was upfront about what would and would not work. He said that he was concerned not only with how the tattoo would look today or a year from now, but six or ten years down the road. It was an emotional process for me because I had an exact idea in my mind of how I wanted the tattoo to look, and it was a great relief when we started talking and Matt immediately seemed to "get it."
A couple of weeks later, we met for the second consultation. I was overcome with emotion when I saw Matt's sketch because it perfectly captured my vision and was such a perfect tribute to my mother's memory. We made a couple of adjustments and then, two weeks later, I came back to get it done!
The process took about 2 hours, during which time Matt carefully and meticulously replicated his beautiful sketch on my calf. He checked in with me to make sure I was comfortable during the process, and I was able to take breaks when I needed them.
The tattoo is beautiful. I have already received so many compliments. But most importantly, I am able look at it every day and be reminded of my mom and her beautiful spirit. I am indebted to Matt and 2 Spirit Tattoo for playing an integral role in this process that is grief and healing.
About 2 weeks ago, I went into 2 Spirit tattoo for my first piece. I had 2 consultations prior to the actual session where the work met my skin. Since I've been thinking about a tattoo for a very long period of time, I wanted to make sure everything was right and would be comfortable with the experience from the beginning. I got that feeling when walking into the space, but especially in working with Matt Matik.
Let me also say the space was amazing. It was open, clean, great light and reminiscent of an art gallery (with better people). When I went into the space for the first time, every artist was friendly. This made the experience less intimidating for a first timer.
Matt Matik was great in my first interactions over email, but then even better in person. I was upfront that this would be my first piece, but pretty vague about the style. From the get go, Matt explained the process from consultation to post ink work.
As I said, I was a bit vague in my design requirements, but Matt was spot on after listening to the junk that was coming out of my mouth. Â I knew what I wanted in my head, but had difficulty explaining in full detail and wanted Matt to come up with something. He definitely hit the target after being patient. I knew the experience was going to be great because Matt was excited to do the design and the work. This set me at ease and I know everything was going to be great.
The day came for the ink work. Once again, Matt explained what was going to happen and during the work he always made sure I was alright and comfortable. 2 hours later the work was complete. The tattoo was exactly what I wanted and where I wanted. Placement was perfect.
In the end, I was very happy and my friends family loved the work as well, saying the design was meticulous. Â I am definitely planning on going back to 2 Spirit Tattoo again for more work and I would recommend anyone go here as well.
6 Stars? I would if I could. I just got a tattoo with Matt Matik last week. Â I was really excited about the design that Matt put together, but I super nervous about getting the actual tattoo. I have a few tattoos already and one particular experience with a DB that has me a little traumatized. Anyway, Matt is very calm and down to earth. Matt has 'light hands' and I think at one point I nearly drifted off getting the tattoo. One hour later and I had a tattoo that made me really happy with crisp lines. Everyone at the store is very professional and the place is impeccably clean. My only regret was that I didn't leave a bigger tip.
Review Source:After searching long and hard for the best place in San Francisco to get my third tattoo I finally stumbled upon 2 Spirit. I sent them an email about what I was looking for and Cats got back to me within a day. I told her what I wanted and she designed something so much better then anything I couldn't ever dreamt up. She was very friendly and funny and professional during the whole ordeal. She also didn't man handle my arm like some tattoo artists have.
The best tattoo experience I've ever had. If you're looking for a place to get your next tattoo, look no further then Cats.
Last week I had an appointment with Matt Matik to get my second tattoo. This was my first experience at 2 Spirit, and I would definitely go back.
I emailed Matt a design I wanted, with a few notes about how I wanted it tweaked. I did not schedule a consultation since it takes me an hour to get SF from where I live/work. When I got to the tattoo appointment we went over the design and sizing, then Matt made the changes. He was very accommodating, and even scheduled in a break so I could move my car from the 2hr limit metered spot I parked in.
After two hours in the chair I had a beautiful, crisp, clean piece of art on my shoulder blade. I've only had it for a week now and keep getting compliments on it. I'm sure it will look even better after a few weeks when it's 100% healed.
Amazing experience! I had my first piece done by Matt about a week ago. But before that, we had spent nearly two months going over ideas again and again, building a custom design from scratch and improving it over time. I was really picky and hard to satisfy, but Matt was patient with me and encouraged me to come again and not rush my decision to choose a design. The finished work is quite amazing, and I'm impressed with not only the quality of the work, but also with Matt's speed and precision. All in all, a comprehensively satisfying experience!
Review Source:Came in for my first piece. Â The whole experience, from start to finish, was incredible. Â First, Â I went to about 6 shops in San Francisco to meet with artists to decide on who to get my first piece done by. Â Once I met with Michael at 2 Spirit, I knew it'd be the right shop.
The space itself is amazing. Â It's like an art gallery, very cool energy.
Michael B. is one of the most talented people I've ever met. Â My custom piece turned out amazing. Â I'm incredibly pleased with his work, and excited to have his be part of my life. Â I'll definitely work with him again in the future.
After moving to the Bay Area, I was ready for my second tattoo. Being the picky person I am, I wanted to find the best tattoo shop. I just happened to stumble upon 2 spirit while searching Yelp. I looked at the artists and their work and I was hooked. This was the perfect place for me! My husband and I both wanted new ink, so one day while we were in the city, we stopped in to make an appt. We both book an appt with Matt who seem super eager to do a good job and do what we wanted. Let me tell you, we were not disappointed! He did a fantastic job with both of our tats! We were there for 3 hours and my husband had to go back for a 1 hour touch up session which was covered by our deposit. Will definitely be going back to this shop for our next ones! They care about you, and are determined to do the best job they can. The shop is super clean and awesome too!
Review Source:Because I am used to traditional tattoo shops, I wasn't sure what to think of 2Spirit. However, Roxx and everyone else working there (from other tattooers to the shop helper) were so nice and so on point I was quickly won over.
I don't typically write Yelp reviews for tattoo shops because I think it is up to the client to learn about and gain an understanding of tattoos/shops. As this shop probably caters to a clientele not as familiar with "traditional" shops... It looks like a cross between a new age dentist's office and a hair salon, but in a way that I would like my house to look. They do have kombucha on tap and played great goth music when I was in there. Never have I seen a shop so organized and easy to work with. They really do care about the comfort and experience of the client (which sounds silly unless you compare it to the average tattoo experience).
They specialize in (exclusively?) black/grey work and Roxx does amazing larger pieces... but you should know that if you are looking into checking 2Spirit out.
Can't recommend this place highly enough. Went in for my first tattoo and want to go back for every single one I have planned in the future! Ben was so friendly, welcoming, reassuring and professional. Took his time over the design and talked everything through with me over email a few weeks in advance. All the artists do such individual, different, beautiful art. Can't say enough good things! Worth every penny and more. THANK YOU!
Review Source:I can not begin to tell you what an amazing experince getting my first Tattoo at 2 spirit by a fantastic artist Matt ! from consultation to my first two Tattoo's that I got TONIGHT!!
my experience was smooth, caring , professional, calming, sweet, and the work is FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!! I can not wait to take off the wraper and wear it out! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it...and it did not hurt, it came out so pretty so dlicate so lovely I am so excited!
Roxx is the owner and she is sweet and lovey...and her other artist are simply LOVELY..the shop feels much more like a hair salon a NICE one its windows and glass and wooden floors with a BEAUTIFULLY designed front door..no one was snoby or ego driven everyone is KIND, humbel and sweet and Matt is as calm as con be he puts you at ease immidiately..he is  VERY talented ...I brought in an idea and he turned my idea into a simple clean beauiful art! I can not believe that I did not do this sooner...and I loved this experience so much I am already thinking about the next one and this one isnt even un rapped!!!!!!i feel so LUCKY that I LOVE my tattoo and that I LOVED the experience...the shop is clean, modern, light filled not cluttered very prstine with out being over the top... My tattoo was finished very quiclkly and very painlessly....Roxx has an amazing shop...and her art is like none other that I have ever seen ever... and Matt... OMG what a sweet sweet man very professional
and VERY talented..the whole experience was simply AMAZING!!!!!!!
Thank you Matt!!
This place is top notch. The process and environment are just as much about quality as the work itself. I had a great time just shootin' the breeze with Matt and Michael, talking about anything from car restoration to sub-genres of blackwork to weird Costco drinks we had growing up (remember Squeeze Its??).
At the same time, the place is super clean and professional. I had full confidence in Matt throughout the process and my tattoo turned out great. Whether you're a crafty veteran or a first-timer, I highly recommend 2Spirit.
I got my first tattoo by Roxx. I'm a little overdue in posting this and I don't usually write online reviews but feel compelled to do so, to share my incredibly positive experience with others.
I had wanted a tattoo for a very long time and I searched on and off for years, trying to find the right artist. I stumbled across Roxx online and was immediately attracted to her striking and unique designs. Â Her mix of tribal and geometric line work is stunningly beautiful. I called Roxx and made an appointment. Â She was gracious and friendly on the phone and took time to explain her approach. Â I got the immediate feeling I was in very good hands.
During my first meeting with Roxx, we simply chatted. Â She took the time to understand who I was, my background, my heritage, what's important to me. Â She then created a unique design that reflected who I am and we refined it over a couple of meetings. Â She made it clear that we could go through as much iteration as I wanted until we came up with the perfect design. Â I felt very comfortable asking for changes and tweaks. Â Not that we needed many because she created an exceptionally beautiful design pretty damn quickly.
My big badass tattoo is now finished. Â It took 4 sessions over a period of 6 months; about 2-3 hours per session. Â Roxx is warm, friendly, professional, and the most incredibly talented artist. Â She exudes creativity and perfectionism in her tattoo work. Â I'd been told by others that getting my ribs tattooed would not be a walk in the park but Roxx was highly in tune with my pain level throughout the process and because of her sensitivity, it was not nearly as bad as I anticipated. Â What Roxx designed for me is better than I ever imagined and my tattoo feels like it's been part of me forever.
Roxx and her crew deserve a gold medal for customer service. On every visit, I was greeted warmly at the door and offered tea or water. Ben and Matt exude the same degree of professionalism and friendliness as Roxx. Roxx and her team truly understand that tattooing is an intimate experience and they certainly take customer satisfaction very seriously.
The studio, which feels a lot like an art gallery, is impeccably clean. Modern, glass-top tables, iMacs, gleaming wooden floors, spotless with no clutter. Â The energy is relaxed, comfortable, totally chill.
It's been an amazing journey and I could not be any happier with the final result. Â No-one except Roxx will put a drop of ink on my body. Â And if you go see her, take cupcakes.
A lot has been covered by other reviewers. Â Not wanting to be repetitive, I want to bring out a few points about the experience of getting your ink done at 2 Spirit that deserve special attention.
First, 2 Spirit has a great stable of artists (Matt, Michael, Ben) doing all sorts of different work. Â What I want to speak to specifically here is the experience of looking for (and finding) a world-class black work artist - Roxx. Â
IT IS VERY DIFFICULT at this point in tattoo history to develop truly original work. Â As a browse through her work illustrates, Roxx has spent a long-time honing a black work style that - while pulling elements from a number of traditions - has its own very distinct flavor. Â What strikes most people the hardest is the cleanness and precision of her lines and the uniformity of blackness which she is able to achieve even in very large format pieces. Â
It's like combining the best of indigenous tattoo traditions (particularly Kalanga) with a modern, graphic design sensibility and execution. Â There is also a huge emphasis on having tattoo design follow and co-operate with anatomy (in the era of technical tattooing, one thing I see far too often is a highly detailed piece that looks "slapped on" a body part with no regard for the overall relationship with the human body). Â Â
As with any form of distinct and powerful artwork, Roxx seems to have spawned an army of people imitating various aspects of her work. Â This leads me to my second point - why you should come to this studio specifically to get work done. Â
Put simply, if you are going to invest your time, energy and financial resources in high-end tattooing, the environment you are getting work in should reflect this commitment. Â It is kind of pathetic how rarely this happens (paying 200/hour for shitty music, dirty-ass bathrooms, uncomfortable chairs, etc.). Â 2 Spirit itself - as a space - is a work of art. Â The actual FEELING of the space and the people in it makes you want to spend time there. Â This is CRITICAL because tattooing TAKES TIME. Â
Finally, a note on customer service and professionalism. Â All the artists and staff @ 2 Spirit are adults - e.g. they are not emotional children with no clue about how to run a business, communicate clearly, etc. Â Their clear commitment to running a tight ship comes through in everything they do and is one of the reasons they've become such a popular shop in SF (not an easy feet as SF is such a major competitive hub for tattooing).
What more can I say that hasn't already been said? Â I was going mention how amazing the shop, the atmosphere, the artists and the artistry is here but it looks like all that has been covered many times over by other reviews. Â
I'm so grateful I am that Roxx took my very basic idea of a lotus flower and turned into something really unique and special. Â It's the kind of custom piece that makes me smile every time I catch a glance of it in the mirror. Â It was probably a bit outside of her usual aesthetic (not quite as geometrical or black, but more art noveau/mendhi inspired) and she was so meticulous about each and every little detail. Â
The vibe at 2Spirit is really calm, warm and welcoming too, something I love after being in a few "grittier" tattoo shops. Â
It is expensive but you get what you pay for. Â I'll be starting a 2Spirit savings fund very soon. :)
An amazing experience all round!!
Some friends and I decided to get tattoos done to commemorate our year abroad in SF, and we went to Matt for advice!
Although our tattoos were quite small, and were very different designs, Matt managed to deal with us all personally, and made us feel excited and comfortable about our fist ever tattoos!!
After our consultation, he gave us his email in case we had any questions or changes to the designs.
He managed to fit us all in on the same day, and as just really nice and sweet!
The tattoos look great, really clean and concise!! And the studio is a really lovely space; clean and stylish!
It was just really great, and I would recommend it to anyone!
I was seeking a tattoo parlor that could help me design a memorial tattoo after facing a hard loss. Also, I knew I wanted to incorporate crematory ashes into the design and I had read online that finding an artist willing to use ashes is not an easy feat. Â
2Spirit is the place to go! Â If you have an image or a design, with true meaning to your message, you get what you pay for and you should put your heart, soul, and body into the hands of someone who grabs the essence of your mental image and emotional message. Â
This review is in two parts: for the shop and for Matt Matik.
Shop:
I would almost refrain from calling this a shop and instead call it a studio. These individuals are artists first and foremost.
No neon signs or hanging boards of designs you can pick out of a box here! Â
I found 2Spirit on Yelp. I emailed the main info email address and got an immediate, friendly reply from Blake. He was super helpful and then pointed me to Matt. The shop is clean, well lit, modern, and gorgeous. Â As soon as you walk in, staff greet you. I came to the shop 3 times and each time at least 1 staff person (if not more) greeted me.
While I sat for my tattoo, as far as I could see, every staff member was on hand and happy that whole time. I feel like this is a family, people who truly love one another and love what they do. Â They take their time, they don't rush, and they get the essence of your message just right. Â Every artist was professional, friendly, laughing and happy. Â From my assumptions, every client seemed to be a return customer and there were also other people just stopping in to say hi and show off their past work the 2Spirit folks had done. This is a shop that fosters relationships.
My upper half was on full display over 4 hours; nothing left to the imagination unfortunately. Everyone handled it so graciously and professionally and while it wasn't my finest moment, they were polite about it.
As an aside, the shop has the most beautiful front door you will ever see (Matt made this door!). Â
Now for the good stuff.... Matt Matik!
I just had a loss and I knew I wanted to have a memorial tattoo done with ashes. Blake emailed his reply and said any artist at 2Spirit would be open to using ashes! He asked who I wanted and I said Matt. When I had looked through Matt's art, it really resonated with me.
From there, I emailed with Matt and we set up a consult.
I went to Matt, sat down, gave him some photos, told him some of my feelings and he began drawing. Â I felt like I had 15 different ideas and messages I wanted to capture and Matt was able to do so in that very first meeting. He built on it to make it even more perfect; I felt like Matt got it. It mattered a lot to me that I could sit there and say what I felt so openly and Matt could draw that. Â I would have been lucky enough to meet Matt in life, but I am so fortunate to have had Matt give me this permanent gift.
I met with Matt once more to go over the sketch and then came the actual date. 3 total meetings and every time Matt took his time, was patient and a great listener.
Matt is really informative about his advice regarding body placement/location, size, color schemes, etc. He is honest and gives you constructive information.
Matt was polite, considerate, friendly, and just an all-around awesome person. He took his time, considered my needs for breaks, etc. and was way more considerate about my public flashing than I was.
He made a comment that I can't really remember verbatim, but it summarizes my experience with him. I don't have his permission to quote him, but the general gist of his comment was that he tries to imagine feeling what that person is feeling when they are describing and designing this tattoo; he thinks about what he would want if it was his tattoo. Â This IS how it felt meeting with him for the first consult; he took my words and my emotions and gave me a memorial tattoo that captures forever my loss; both the happiness for the time I had and the sadness for the time I lost.
I know I want to go to Matt again for my other ideas. And I know I would recommend Matt, or any 2Spirit artist.
Wow! I had the best time with Roxx and her crew. I came to 2 Spirit Tattoo as a referral from another tattoo studio. And so glad I did! Roxx sat me down and we discussed what I wanted and we planned and collaborated so well together. She let me take my time deciding on a design and let me do a fair amount of pre-designing too!
All of the staff at 2 Spirit Tattoo are great folks. Mr. Ben Volt also helped in the designing process and took great care while putting the stencil on me. Blake did a good job of handling appointments and making sure I had tea while I was there. After care was pretty good too. These guys are professional!
Roxx herself during the ink sessions is great. She used a rotary gun which was quiet and noticeably less painful. Her lines are impeccable and her fills are solid. She is also very personable, finding your comfort levels with chit-chat, music likes/dislikes and over all puts you at ease.
The studio itself is clean, well lit and welcoming. It is a work of art really.
If you are looking to get some new ink I highly recommend 2 Spirit Tattoo, and any of the artists that work there.
What can I say that hasn't been said below? Just read the reviews. Matt. Is. The. Man.
Sit down, talk music, talk the history of charcuterie. Learn that Matt has helped build this polished studio you are sitting in. Before you know it you have the tattoo you wanted and you just hung out with this rad guy for a couple hours. That was my experience.
As for the studio, 2 Spirit is super clean, and as creative and approachable as the people who work there. This studio is at the top of the game.
well well, the reviews are TRUE!
just finished two tattoos with matt matik today, and he's freakin awesome! so friendly and sweet. very knowledgeable and listens to your concerns. great attention to detail as well.
the entire staff is very friendly too and the shop is so clean. i will definitely return and i recommend!
I really can't say enough good things about my experience at 2Spirit and Matt Matik. The shop is immaculate and everyone is super welcoming. Matt saw my vision right away, came up with a beautiful design that worked with my body and covered up the old tattoo I was looking to never see again. He was super patient through the whole process and the end result is a beautiful piece of art on my body that I love. His work speaks for itself!
It is as good as the other reviews say.
This was my second trip to 2 Spirit. Had my first tat done by Ben (kind of a hunk, if that matters) and my second by Matt (a total sweetheart in his own right).
This is a studio of real artists. Both Matt and Ben worked with me to create unique designs that expressed exactly the nuance and intention I wanted, translating my verbal descriptions into designs that fulfilled and surpassed my expectations. Both had great "bedside manner," keeping me as comfortable and happy as possible through the process.
The studio is bright, clean, and stylish. Everyone working there is personable, witty, and professional. They enjoy being inspired by their clients' ideas. It's a great place to get inked. I'm theirs for life.
First I want to say I have never written a yelp review, but had such a possitive experience at 2 Spirit that I felt it really important to say something, even though I'm writing this a bit late. I went in a couple months ago and must say I was REALLY nervous. It was my first tattoo in a couple years and I was getting it on my upper rib cage/side, which I had heard from numerous people hurts a lot. Immediately upon walking in to 2 Spirit I knew I was in the right place. Everyone was extremely welcoming, inviting, and professional.
I just want to say MATT MATIK instantly put my nervs at ease! Besides being an amazing tattoo artist, his energy was truly calming. He, and everyone in the shop, made me feel so comfortable which really helped me get through the 2.5hrs of work. My only complaint would be that I wish I had gotten  it a bit larger! :-) I will be going back in to get a few more leaves added and some of the ink touched up. THANK YOU Matt for my beautiful tattoo and for making the experience such a positive one!!!
AMAZING! Just got my first tattoo done by Ben Volt. He was awesome...he made me feel comfortable and was patient! Loved how he gave honest feedback on what would look best and what wouldn't. Â I LOVE how it turned out and definitely will go to him in the future!
Overall, a clean and amazing space that feels like you're in an art gallery/studio! I highly recommend Ben Volt and 2 Spirit Tattoo!
Another great find in this city!
It's time for a tattoo and the timing is right (the stars are aligned and the world didn't end). I searched around for a shop that felt right for my idea, and THIS IS THE SHOP! I contacted them because of their black work (top notch!), and their website and shop are very clean, neat, and stylish.
I walked in asking for Ben or Matt based on other reviews, and have been working with Ben. Dude is right on with his experience! Solid black work, and applying it correctly to the body. I finished a 2.5 session around my leg and turns out, I'm gonna need about 4 sessions for the final result, but I cannot be happier already! I could see doing a body piece here with every artist in collaboration.
Look em up, everything they do is custom, and no flash art on the walls!
I could not be happier with my experience with Matt Matik and 2 Spirit Tattoo. This was my first tattoo, and after reading these reviews and seeing his work, I knew Matt could create the design I was looking for. Â Matt was receptive, patient, and creative. Â His attention to detail was superb, and the tattoo is perfect. Â I have received so many compliments on its beautiful, clean design.
The entire process was a pleasure, and I will definitely be using Matt again for future work. Â I highly recommend.
First impressions of the place in a strictly VISUAL sense - clean, neat, organized, welcoming, and sheik. The design and feel of the shop itself definitely reflects the precision and care that the tattoo artists here take when doing their work.
Got tattoo work done here by Matt - couldn't be happier!!! We trusted him to interpret our initial designs with his creative eye and he surpassed our expectations in every way possible. Matt's line-work is immaculate and his attention to detail cannot be surpassed.
Not to mention, everyone who we interacted with here (staff) had a kind, friendly, open-hearted personality which made the whole experience that much better. Chairs are comfy, bathroom was clean, and in-house dog was cute as can be!! :-)
This was my fourth tattoo, but my first LARGE, time-consuming tattoo and I will DEFINITELY return here for any further work! My boyfriend was the proud recipient of his FIRST EVER tattoo here and feels the same way as I do.
To Matt and the rest of you guys at 2 Spirit - THANK YOU!! You'll be seeing us in the future!
been on a yelp hiatus... but had to write a review for 2 spirit tatttoo and MATT MATIK!!!! damn, this is the tattoo place i've always dreamed of. super clean, beautiful inside and such sweet people that work there! plus there's a frenchie named homer that chills there (ALSO SO SWEET -- i have a frenchie myself).
anyway, matt is everything you could ever want in a tattoo artist AND THEN SOME. SUPER kind, down-to-earth, and thoughtful. he tells you from experience what you should expect (and not expect). for instance, if you're looking for a clean design then you have to consider the size cuz it bleeds over the time. he can give you an idea of what to expect now and in the long run.
on top of that he's VERY talented.
anyway, the aura of the place is so relaxing, and matt is such a pro! i literally almost fell asleep 3 times during our session, i drooled at one point (no joke).
oh, did i mention his customer service skills are incredible???? and again, such a nice guy. he told me to feel free to contact him if i have any questions bc there are never any stupid questions (which made me feel so comfortable bc i am ALWAYS asking questions).
I AM SOLD FOR LIFE. found my tattoo guy, and sticking with him!
MATT YOU ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
also, everyone else i spoke to at 2 spirit was also really chill. i'm sure you're in good hands with anyone at 2 spirit tattoo.
my best friend also got his tattoo with matt the same time as me and he's just as pleased as i am. he will also be a returning customer FO SHO.
if you want a solid tatt, good conversation, total comfort -- if you want to be in good hands: matt is definitely your guy.
p.s. yelp friends -- for sharing this secret with you, i hope you don't make it too difficult for me to book with him in the future!!!! SERIOUSLY!
I found Matt and 2spirit through a friend's recommendation. It was my first tattoo so I was a little nervous, but Matt and the other guys were great. They made me very comfortable and welcome. The studio is clean and gorgeous and feels like an art gallery. Â I worked with Matt for about an hour on the design. Â He was honest about what would work well for a lasting design, and ultimately came up with just what I had envisioned. For the tattoo itself Matt did a great job making me comfortable and it hardly hurt. He has a very light touch.
I waited for a long time to get this tattoo, and had given it a lot of thought. Matt made the experience fantastic and I couldn't be happier with the result.
Anyone know if the studio is currently open for business?
I stopped by a couple of days ago to speak to an artist after multiple calls to the studio met with infinite ringing.
The door was wide open, so I peered inside and it looks like the place is currently being renovated or undergoing some sort of construction. Nobody was there to assist.
Leaving a positive rating because this is more of an inquiry, but I can't seem to get in touch with anyone who works there.
Matt did some script work on my arm, and it was quick, professional and beautifully done. He was friendly, accommodating, and honest about what would and wouldn't work, and talked me through my options till we found a way I was happy with.
Final product is great - crisp text, really finely rendered.
Everyone in the shop is friendly - even if you were a first-timer, you wouldn't feel intimidated. Shop is clean, bright, new. They don't autoclave anything that touches you - every client gets new, disposable equipment.
Went in a few days before to drop off a cash deposit - cash only, 1 hour minimum.
I went to Matt after finding his work online. Â He did an amazing job coming up with a tattoo design for me. Â It took a few different drafts, but he was easy to work with and really receptive to feedback. Â He also assured me that we could go through as many designs as we needed to come up with something I really loved. Â
The final design incorporates all the elements that I had asked for and I couldn't be happier with the end result. Â There's no question about his professionalism, talent, and attention to detail. Â His work really speaks for itself. Â The added bonus is that he's also a friendly guy. Â He would occasionally break into song during our session which was an entertaining distraction. Â
I'm definitely coming back here again! Â Thanks, Matt!
I went in with my boyfriend to his appointment with Matt. Matt did such an amazing job on his custom tattoo that it inspired me to finally have an old tattoo covered up with something new. I started to talking to the other Artists there and Ben suggested Mike. When I had my consult with Mike,I told him that I wanted some flowers and my daughter's name and within an hour he was able to draw up something so beautiful I had to get it right then and there.
It wasn't cheap, but when your getting a tattoo I've learned - cheap isn't better, so if your thinking of getting a new tattoo or covering up one - I highly recommend Mike, Matt or anyone who works at 2 Spirit Tattoo!
Roxx is an AMAZING artist (tattoo and otherwise), a sweet and sincere woman, an inspiration to many, and someone I will now call a friend forever. Â
I was referred to Roxx by another artist who due to two large, wide scars on both sides of my chest had refused to attempt to cover them with tattoo. Â Roxx on the other hand was confident in her ability to create such a masterpiece of art that the scars would not only cover, but would disappear in the design of the piece. Â
I gave Roxx a basic idea and she created my masterpiece. Â I gave her full control over the piece and I am so thankful that I did. Â Before starting my tattoo I can admit now my body issues (related to the scars) were so severe that they limited my ability to do the things I really enjoyed, and take my shirt off in public altogether. Â
After many many hours on her table, enduring some of the most excruciating pain I've ever imagined (covering my nipples black, and the entire belly button too- inside and out) I am now very proud to show off my body and artwork everywhere I go. Â The scars are solid black and the piece is beautiful. Â It draws a lot of attention wherever I go and I feel bad for accepting any compliments as they credit is all due to Roxx! Â I just had airport security in Indonesia demand I take off my shirt so they could see my tattoo before boarding my plane. Â They were very impressed.
One thing is for sure. If you're looking for a modern and completely unique, (so much so that her work is plagiarized in other countries now) tribal or black work tattoo she is the artist for you. Â Her shop is PRISTINE. Â The place is cleaner than my doctor's office, NO JOKE!
This place is great!! I got my first tattoo there this week with Matt M. and I couldn't be happier! He took the time to make sure the design was exactly how I wanted it and calmed my nerves, as I didn't know what to expect. He showed me some of his other work and he's so talented, I will most definitely go back for my next tattoo! I'm hooked :)
Review Source:2 spirit was recommended to me by a friend so I called and was referred to Matt who ultimately ended up doing my tattoo. Â From initial consult to the final session, Matt was awesome. Â He took my ideas and created a phenomenal tattoo. Â I have to say 2 spirit is no bargain, but as Matt reminded me, "good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good." Â
My girlfriend also came in and had an old tattoo covered up with a new one. Â Mike did an incredible job on hers... hopefully she'll write her own yelp review and praise what turned out to be a fantastic tattoo shop.
This review is for Roxx who is my official full body artist :)
I first got my arm pieces guitar done in 2010, I loved it so much I had another huge two arm tribal honeycomb done in 2011. Â And two more in 2012... Let us just say, she is the best at black & white modern tribals
I am already planning my shoulder blade piece in 2013.
I will go here for the rest of my life.
It took me about 6 months to search endlessly in the city for a tattoo shop I would be comfortable with for my first tattoo (Persian calligraphy piece on my inner bicep). I am so happy I didn't rush into this process, or else I wouldn't have found this gem :)
Everyone here was kind, goofy and just made me feel as if I was getting the tattoo in the comfort of my own room at home. The vibe is very relaxed (not to mention CLEAN), and not intimidating/pretentious like the stereotypical tattoo shop.
I highly recommend Micheal, I chose him after stalking his work online and could not be happier. He made time for a thorough consultation , adn was able to book me just a week after. He is REALLY talented, and best of all professional. He held convo with me and my friend who had came with me for support, and basically just made the experience enjoyable.
Thanks 2 Spirit Tattoo! will definitely recommend to all my friends.
After procrastinating for 29 years to get a tattoo, I finally committed to my first tattoo. After a bit of research, I came to the conclusion that I would be getting my work done at 2 Spirit. I had a consultation with Matt Matik, setup a time and he did it. I have to say that Matt was completely professional and had a good bedside (tableside?) manner. Not only that but his work was perfect. I'm going back. Soon. Thanks Matt!
Review Source:WHATTA GEM!
in a city filled with tattoo shops a newbie like myself could have a hard time picking which one is right for them, so i thank yelp for leading me to 2 Spirit!
I called about 40 minutes before i went in to ask if they were taking walk-ins that day.
a guy named Blake answered, was super friendly and invited me to come on in!
I got to the shop, which had a super chill vibe, (very clean and minimalistic) and checked in with Blake. he told me MIKE B. would be working on me today, which i was stoked about because i loved the pictures of the work he had on the shop website. Soon enough i was laying down in that seat getting inked. Mike is so talented! not only because he made my piece look sick, but because he knows how to hold a casual convo, and made my first tattoo experience the best! I recommend Mike! and dont be afraid to be open to any of his creative suggestions on your tattoo... you WILL NOT regret it.
So thank you Mike! you're RAD and i will cherish and love first my tattoo forever! :3
"Puttin' 5 karrots in mah baby girls ears!"
roxxxxx is one of the most amazing people ive ever known.. and the work she does is beautiful!
for me part of getting tattooed is not only the best work i can find.. but the best people.. roxxxxx truly provides the best of both worlds.
i love you roxx.. and your work.. and your beautiful shop.
anyone going to get work done by this amazing person will thank themselves and roxx for a long time to come.
all my support and love.
These folks are some of the kindest in the SF tattoo game. I came in for a consult, Blake, their lovely beekeeper, offered me a drink. First off, the homie actually acknowledged me. Everybody in the shop looks like a bunch of artistic badasses.
I met with Matt 'ill" Matik to craft a bunch of straight lines, interrupted by some squiggly ones on my upper, right forearm--a seismograph of the '89 SF Loma Prieta quake--11 thin ass red lines and a bunch of squiggles modeled after the 7.1 magnitude seismograph. Most shops would turn me down. Shut up, you know it's true. Who likes inking thin, straight lines, let alone red ones?
Truthfully, there is no other shop in the city that handles inkwork with such meticulous detail. Seriously, check out their portfolio. I'm a super anal (you have a dirty mind) designer when it comes to detail and Matt was the perfect dude to work with. Not only is his highly collaborative and full of fresh ideas, he's a master of his craft--paying attention to as much detail as possible from drawing up a grid, paying mind to the proportions and relationship of line weight, ink coverage, size and contrast... all the fundamental design principles most people tend to miss. My arm was a blank page for him to layout a piece of his craftwork. Well not true. I have an existing red "JACKLIN" tattoo on my upper arm. iLL Matik made sure the two pieces would sex each other. JACKLIN and my earthquake lines are definitely shaking the bed.
Now I have this itch (aside from fresh ink) to collect more 2SPIRIT ink,
2Spirit Tattoo is amazing and super professional: All the tattoo artists, Roxx, Matt and everyone is super helpful, patience and rock with their tattoo talents.
With a deposit, Matt helped me design my tattoos and then went ahead. You gave me the biggest gifts for my body to re-own my body..
The interior design of 2Spirit Tattoo as a space is aestheticially , clean and not something I have experienced anywhere. I am always being respected and welcomed. Thanks Matt!!! Love to you Roxx and everyone.
I really appreciate it being welcomed and accepted for who i am as a transgender/ genderqueer individual of color. 2Spirit Tattoo has mad respect for me and I do not experience that a lot.. I will refer everyone to 2Spirit Tattoo the rest of my life..
Thanks Matt!!! You are supercool, professional and lovely to work with, so much appreciation... Love to you Roxx and everyone as well!!
I had been planning a tattoo for more than 8 years, and I had always been looking for the right artist to get it done. When I discovered 2SPIRIT here on Yelp, I immediately knew this was the place - I always intend on following my gut instincts and so far they've never failed me.
I looked through online portfolios, and instantly called and set up a consultation with Matt Matik. When I entered the store, I was immediately greeted with the feeling of knowing this was the place I was meant to come, and a very nice man asking if I wanted water or tea.
The shop is elegantly minimal, and has a very unique feel to it. There are many pictures on the walls that are quite beautiful,
I sat down with Matt, and he we chatted for a bit - he showed me his newest additions to his portfolio, and right there I set up a date for my own tattoo with him. I gave him my idea, sent him some pictures, and a week later he drew up something beautiful. The tattoo idea was a Circuit Board that splintered into veins, and the veins would fade into my actual veins. One key bit of information is that the circuit board idea was one I had been sitting on for several years, but the veins idea was very new. I'll return to that when it becomes more important.
Matt's attention to detail and desire for perfection is exactly what I was hoping for. We measured my arm and put the stencil of the design on over and over until it was exactly perfect, not even a millimeter off. We then proceed to tattoo the design on, and a couple hours later it's there on me, and beautiful - the black is dark and eerie (and a month later after a lot of healing, it's still just as beautifully black).
So now the Circuit board is tattooed on, and the next part was the veins. Instead of stenciling the veins, we decided to draw them on to see how they looked. Quite frankly, they looked wonderful. I was very much happy with how that was going to look, but I wasn't 100% on that. The circuit board was exactly how I wanted it, but the veins being such a new idea to a tattoo I'd been planning for years, I wanted to sit on the idea a while longer - and Matt could sense that without me even really saying anything. With that, he told me "You can always add more on later, but you can't take it away" - and even though it's pretty obvious, it struck a chord with me. It immediately put me at ease, and helped me understand that he wants just what I want - to make art.
With all that being said, you can expect to see me back - and I'm more than willing to make the trip from NYC to San Francisco, as I have new ideas for tattoos that I honestly don't think anyone else would be able to bring to life with such elegance as Matt. Thank you 2SPIRIT.
Easily one of my favorite shops in San Francisco. Roxx is fantastic and an incredible artist.
However, I'm going to talk about a new artist that recently started working at 2Spirit, Dillon Forte. I've known Dillon for over a year, and we decided he would be doing my whole right arm sleeve. It looks exceptional so far, and I can't wait to see how the progress goes.
Hes a great artist, a good dude, funny, and takes tattooing very seriously. I am happy to have his work on me. Down to earth, and loves what he does.
If you're looking to get mandala blackwork, Dillon's your guy. Every time he has worked on me, it has been a positive experience.
Another plus...Hes not really heavy handed, I was relaxed enough the last time he worked on my arm, that I got kinda sleepy and almost napped.
Like I said. He's your guy.
Not that these guys need another 5-star review, but DAMN they're good. I can't recommend them highly enough. This was my first tattoo and I came in with a fairly good idea of what I wanted. Matt and Roxx both had some amazing ideas on how to make it way better and I couldn't be happier with the result. Everyone at the shop was extremely welcoming and instantly put this tattoo noob at ease.
On to Matt... This guy is ridiculous. He's got an amazing eye, is extremely meticulous (Matticulous?) and is a true artist. He's very gentle (I almost fell asleep at one point) and let me know exactly what he was doing every step of the way.
Thank you 2SPIRIT!
The best experience I could ask for for my first tattoo. Matt took the idea I had in mind and turned it into an awesome work of art; he did such an amazing job, my tattoo looks like it's been stamped on my shoulder, which is commendable considering the art piece is surrounded by a perfect circle. Not to mention, he made me feel really comfortable--he was very open; he actually listened to what I wanted; he didn't mind resetting the stencil 3,4,5 times to get it right; he explained what he was doing as he was tattooing me (which tempered the shock of going from the outline to the coloring in). Everyone in the shop was super friendly, making sure both my boyfriend and I were comfortable during the initial 3 hour session and again during the 1 hour touch-up session. I would highly recommend this place & Matt to anyone in the Bay Area. I'll definitely be going back for future pieces.
Review Source:Absolutely stellar experience. That's all there is to say as a bystander, really. I've been in the shop a few times, and despite not being the one getting the awesome tattoo (although I have to admit, I'm a bit jealous of my boyfriend), Roxx, Ben, Matt and crew made me feel incredibly welcome and comfortable there. It's clear the shop is run like their own home, they each take pride in the way it looks and how its run.
Walking in, it really feels like a house of Art, and a labor of love. Although Roxx's talent already puts her a MAJOR cut above the rest, she stays grounded and humble about her work and treats everyone (even me, random yuppie asian chick in yoga pants and clogs) with respect. As an artist, I appreciate her no-BS honesty and integrity in her work- she doesn't compromise her style but will give you honest feedback, not just what you want to hear. Â I've met so many tattoo artists who either treat you as 1. a stain and insult to their talent, or 2. a way to make rent. Roxx is neither of those things. Her style is distinct, timeless, and elegant, and all her pieces stand alone. Come if you want a piece of Art, as opposed to some crappy insignia you'll get sick of in a few years.
2Spirit Tattoo already has a place in Tattoo history (her booth was next to Shige's at the tattoo convention!), but I never once felt a sense of pretentiousness or snobbery there. All in all, a class act- and when I become a famous artist (or just an up and coming one!) I'm definitely getting a whole sleeve done there. The work is truly stunning.
Just a quick warning. They DO charge for touchups. My mistake for not asking on the phone first, but after talking to some of my tattoo artist friends they too were surprised to find that this studio charged for the type of touch up I went in to get.
After my tattoo peeled and healed there were two letters closer to my wrist that were not as dark as the others. The outline of the text was dark but the fill of the text was a lighter color. Apparently the wrist is a problem area since there is so much movement of the skin during normal motion. Being OCD, I wanted that fixed, and thought it would take at MOST ten minutes and be free, since this studio charges a higher base rate.
Matt ended up having to charge me half an hour ($80 more) to spend 10 minutes (maybe less?) fixing those two letters. He explained to me that they typically didn't even do half hour increments (minimum is an hour) but was making an exception. He did use up the rest of the 30 minutes to touch up other spots on my tattoo, but I really honestly just wanted to jump in and out quickly for two letters and was disappointed to find out they charged. It wasn't like I was complaining about something that was part of the design that I didn't end up liking...it was literally just fading that had occurred during the healing process that needed to be filled in.
That being said, everything was still handled in a professional matter, and I would still recommend the studio (and have been) to my friends. I was a little unhappy about the policy, but it was because I wasn't aware of it and now I know. Just posting another review as a heads up/FYI to anyone who was wondering.
***Edit: I have since been contacted by 2Spirit via Yelp (after I posted the review) and offered my $80 back in exchange for a 5 star review. Thank you guys for the offer, it means a lot that you're trying to make the customer happy. I *am* still quite happy with the studio (I still keep on trying to refer all my friends), I love my tattoo and I don't want my money back. This review was put here and will remain here to point out the communication hiccup with the touch up. Again, I'll admit I was a tattoo newb, but some things I felt should've been explained to me because of that reason.
I feel a little weird now because I know that they will have put two and two together (review and the touchup incident) by now and they know who I am. I hope they will still like me when I go back for another tattoo :(
For 20 years I've been searching for the right tattoo and the right artiest to make it happen. Â I finally narrowed it down to a couple of things, but still couldn't make up my mind. I was searching the web for something totally unrelated to my tattoo when I saw this amazing photo of a guy with a tattoo, it wasn't a tattoo but art and I was drawn to it. The link directed me to 2SPIRIT and after reading reviews I knew this was the place.
I called and Matt called me back; we had a brief conversation on what I wanted and made an appointment for a consultation. Â I was torn on a couple of different thing and brought as much information as possible, photos, imagines and thoughts to the table and Matt listened and made suggestions and was really into what I wanted. Not only was Matt into it, but Roxx and Ben were interested also and it just felt right.
I have to say Matt was super patient with me, he made so many sketches and was trying to incorporate everything I wanted, but it wasn't working. I kept apologizing to him, but his attitude was amazing, he didn't care, he wanted me to be completely happy. Â I was thinking that maybe this wasn't right and sent him off one more time.. When I return, I was blown away, he captured what I wanted and then some. He made a temp tattoo and placed on my calf and it felt right and looked amazing, I wanted to get right then and there.
When the day came I was super excited and nervous, but once I got there, I was put at easy by Roxx, Ben and Matt. Not only are they super professional but they are friendly and just great people. I couldn't believe I was there for 3 hours. Matt is super gentle and totally put me at ease, he made sure I was ok during the process and gave me great instruction on taking care of my tattoo afterwards. Ben even took photos for me.
I cant say enough about 2SPIRIT. If you want a piece of art then go see them.
Already planning my next one.
I had been meditating on a new tattoo idea for a couple years and then finally decided to hit up 2SPIRIT on a whim to see if they might be the right folks to make it happen. As soon as I walked in the door, Matt greeted me with the warmest welcome and I immediately knew this place was right.
Matt was very attentive and took legitimate time listening to what I wanted/needed. He asked questions and seemed excited about my tattoo, which made me extra pumped.
I came in the following day and left with the most beautiful tattoo possible! Ah, so, so nice. He was great at keeping me relaxed and entertained. The vibe in the studio is super chill and the music is perfect for putting tense muscles at ease.
My tattoo is beautifully detailed and looks exactly how I had imagined-- like a fresh ink sketch every morning, ah!, perfect. The care he took to make each little dot and shade line really makes it pop. It healed in excellent condition thanks to Matt's care recommendations.
So. Big high five to Matt. And the rest of the 2SPIRIT tattoo crew. They're super sweet-- and they like cookies. Bringing your artist a treat is always a good idea :)
After unexpectedly losing my Frenchie to a sudden and severe illness, I felt that I had to do something to commemorate her, since she brought so much happiness to not only my life but so many other people's lives. Â The idea of getting a tattoo portrait of her was the only thing that felt right and made me happy in the midst of my grief.
I feel so lucky to have found 2SPIRIT Tattoo. Roxx and everyone else at the studio have such a great energy about them. I immediately felt comfortable when I came in for my consultation, and when Roxx told me Jean-Paul Gaultier is one of her favorite designers ( also my other Frenchie's name), Â I knew it was meant to be. Â Plus, Gaultier got to come and hang out too.
On the actual tattoo day (which coincidentally happened to be Dia de los Muertos), Â I was really nervous because this would be my biggest tattoo, and I'm extremely squeamish and very sensitive to pain. Sensitive as in: I will pass out if something hurts a lot or I see blood. Â But thanks to the beautiful surroundings, chill music, very comfortable memory-foam bed, my doggie and the positive energy around me, once Roxx started, I actually felt relaxed. Â In fact, Â I didn't even feel so much as slightly nauseous during the whole process. Â And to my amazement, two and a half hours just flew by. Â That's saying a lot coming from someone who is pain-intolerant. Â Roxx is a very gentle tatoo artist not to mention, an amazing person.
The portrait of my frenchie is beautiful right down to every single one of her adorable wrinkles. The immediate reaction from most of my friends has been "It looks just like her!" and a few of them even teared up. I think that says it all.
After living in the city for 7 years, I finally succumbed to the need to get some ink on my body. Of course, there was a pretty big leap from deciding to do it and actually finding the right artist to go with. What made it more complicated was that I had a very specific motif in mind, and while I can sketch it on a paper napkin, an artist I am not.
Enter Matt. He took my ideas and came up with a great place to put it. He then designed it and went over several iterations with me, all the while encouraging me to change whatever didn't feel right. He certainly took his time about it, and my OCD about getting it just right for my first piece of ink ensured that the process took a while.
But hell it was worth it. When I finally got the design done, it was clear that this was exactly what I was looking for. Matt's got a light hand, and he got them lines straight and the ink dark. I love what he did, and most importantly its a unique, personal and meaningful design for me. Thanks Matt!
I'm not high-maintenance, but this ink is going to go everywhere with me, for the rest of my life. Â And so yes, it took me eight years to find an artist who;
1. Â Was talented enough to pull-off my very different tattoo (took it from a flat, dead image and transformed it into an integrated and beautiful part of my body). Â
I could stop here, but I wont...
2. Â Was excited about the work (easier said than done).
3. Â Had experience with geometric work (almost impossible to find)
4. Â Had class and style (Her cup runneth over)
5. Â Had a fantastic reputation (Skull and Sword couldn't say nicer things)
6. Â Doesn't try to make tattoo virgins feel un-cool
7. Â Ran a Gorgeous Shop! (Seriously an art gallery)
8. Â Had a great team that makes you feel like you're part of the family.
(Important because you're going to be spending a lot of time together. Â Ben and Matt are really good people.)
9. Â Kicks ass!
10. Â Kicks ass!
11. Â Kicks ass!
Roxx- You're the best.
Not your ordinary tattoo shop. This place is awesome! So awesome in fact, that I HAD to get a yelp account for the sole reason to rate this place. No, I don't personally know the owner or anyone who works here.
I walk in, and right away notice the cleanliness and level of sanitation in the shop-- immaculate! I am greeted in a very uplifting manner! I ask if I can get a consultation-- based on the design I provided, I was introduced to Matt. He dropped what it was he was doing to tend to my needs. Sat down with me, and provided me with a very clear consultation of my soon to be new ink! I proceeded to make an appointment for later in the week. When that time came around, there were much more clients and artists there than my earlier visit. This gave me a chance to see the shop vibe and energy. EVERYONE, and I mean when I say EVERYONE who works here is VERY friendly, super nice, and entertaining!
Matt had everything prepared for me and was even very accommodating when I had made a change in my original design. His work, amazing! His attitude, uplifting. His hand, barely felt the needle.
I wasn't planning on getting another tattoo, but I enjoyed my experience here so much that I wish to re-live it!
Matt, thank you for my new ink! I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
2spirit Tattoo is an amazing shop!! Â I just got my first tattoo done there by Matt Blakk, an awesome artist and super down to earth guy. Â He was very helpful and patient in helping me find the exact design for what I wanted.
He did a superb job on my tattoo, really taking his time to make sure it was perfect. I would definitely recommend Matt, and I plan on going back to the shop for future tattoos. Â
A truly wonderful experience, great staff, and beautiful custom work. Â Check it out...Boom!
As a professional artist myself, I continue going back to Roxx/2Spirit Tattoo bc I trust their vision, professionalism, and all around appreciation of their craft. This place is the best of the best. It's not for a joke tattoo, or a meaningless piece of flash you found online. This is where you go when you're ready to invest in a piece of Fine Art.
The studio is spotless, full of a creative energy found rarely in tattoo shops, and you feel welcome the moment you walk in. If you're ready for a serious piece of tattoo art, there's really nowhere else you should be looking.
Plus, maybe you'll get a visit from Sumo while you're on the table. Pitbulls and tattoos = dreamy.
Do I really have to rate 2spirit? 2spirit Tattoo is soo above it, I just don't know where to begin.
Roxx asked me during session, what does this mean to you? Well, I'm getting it w/my partner and to me it represents us. Â As she finished, I had somewhat of a revelation. Â The process gave it substance and meaning that will forever remind me of what Roxx exemplifies.
I'll start w my search for an artist. I have gone to all the best artist in the Bay and they all gave me the same answer: it's impossible. I respected that and they all wanted to give me a variation of my original idea. Â It felt like they were changing my principle and I had to compromise because I was asking for too much.
Thank God! Roxx called me back - an hour before I made another mistake - and said it was possible! I scheduled a consultation a month out and trust me, for her...... patience is definitely a virtue.
Walking in, we were immediately greeted by an artist and asked if we wanted something to drink. It was so intimate yet professional that it kind of felt like meeting the love of your life and they go above and beyond just to impress you.
Our tattoo will always remind us of Roxx and her qualities. Something to stride for in our relationship and in every aspect of our life: Â
- be patient and beautiful things will happen
- work hard and you'll be rewarded
- love the challenge and you'll grow to be a master at your craft.
...just like Roxx! :)
In THE CITY for tattoos (so many shops, so many legendary artists, so many tattoos on people, EVERYWHERE), 2SPIRIT holds its own as one of the premiere shops in the city.
The space is gorgeous and spotless, no riffraff wandering in, they take walk-ins, but it is mostly a by-appt. shop. Â Everyone I interacted with was incredibly gracious and friendly. Â I could not be happier with my piece. Â Roxx clearly spares no expense in having a luxury tattoo parlor. Â Far and away the most comfortable tattooing experience I have ever had (memory foam tattoo tables, WTF?, awesome!), important when you think about it - because holding those awkward poses forever is not cute.
Roxx is the bomb. Â Super friendly, mad style, incredibly talented. She has been tattooing for over 20 years, has had shops in Scotland, Amsterdam and the U.S. Â She works FAST, her hand is LIGHT, and her prices reflect her experience, speed and talent - Â i.e. you get what you pay for. Â Roxx is VERY detailed oriented, and is SUPER patient in working out the tattoo technicalities to your desire.
Other things to consider: Â This place is queer friendly, one of the best places in the world to get detailed line work, black/gray tattoos, and tribal work (and no not tribal arm-bands, think mind-blowing non-specific indigenous artwork that draws from Inuit, Egyptian, American Indian, Maori, Masai, Mayan and Henna like patterns.)
Your mind will be blown. Â too bad I live in NYC and have to fly out or hope that Roxx does guest spots out here.
p.s. anyone who tells you tattoos don't hurt is either lying or has a oxycodone connection.
Got my first tattoo here!
it was pleasing and almost relaxing and therapeutic
and that I also had really good skin, the ink took well.
it looks so good, Blingbling Roxx and I collaborated on a design.
I told her more whimsical!
surprisingly enough, it didnt hurt.
it stung a little, and only 2-3 times did it feel like someone was slicing open my skin.
what was worse is the body wash + lotion application afterwards. eeeeeeek sting! to be expected of course.
by far Bling and her crew are the nicest people around, totally chill relaxed CLEAN place.
5 brilliant stars, you pay for the quality tattoo work. :D
A couple of months ago I had the brilliant idea to get feather tattoos with four other of my closest girlfriends. I knew that this would be a bonding moment that we'd remember for the rest of our lives. The problem was we are all completely different and of course wanted different feathers in different areas of our bodies...
Roxx and her team were AMAZING! We first came in for a consultation and she listened carefully to all our needs (and there were many). She then booked us all for the same day!!!
The day of our appointment Roxx took great care of us. She was patient, sincere and made us feel at home. She made sure each tattoo was perfect and that we went home happy. All of us are completely satisfied with our tats and our experience.
Roxx is a great person and talented artist. I would recommend 2Spirit to anyone wanting first quality ink work!
It may be my small-town midwestern roots showing, or just general crotchety-old-man-ness, but I'm not someone who would normally be inclined to turn the care of something as permanent and personal as a tattoo over to someone who'd allow herself to be called Bling Bling Roxx in public. Â If you're the kind of person who might think likewise, get over yourself. Â Say what you will about her nom de plume (nom de aiguille?), Roxx is a consummate professional. Â She runs a very tight ship, and the results speak for themselves. Â The space itself is immaculately clean, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Â
My work was actually done by Matt, who is an absolute perfectionist and spent the better part of an hour making sure everything was perfect before putting needle to skin. Â I want to emphasize that part: Matt absolutely will not let you walk away if anything is less than perfect. Â Like I said, these guys are professionals. Â The whole process took about three hours, however since Roxx had originally quoted me two hours the night before, two hours was all they charged me.
The prices are fair and the quality of the work is exceptional. Â When (not if) the time comes to get more ink, I'll be coming back here.
I've been getting tattooed by Roxx since 2000. She's not only a sick artist with amazing skills, but also a super chill and friendly person who's fun to hang out with and just "shoot the shit".
I'ts hard for me not to go a single day without getting a few compliments on my sleeves. "That's the nicest blackwork i've ever seen" is something I hear pretty often. People who know the art of tattooing recognize the extremely straight lines and comment on how hard that is to do.
Considering the Samoan, Marquesan and Maori style ink, people are always surprised to hear that I got this work done here in SF. No need to hop on a plane, Roxx has all the savage tribal sickness one could desire. If you want exotic, unique and quality tattooes look no further than 2spirit tattoo.
Where to begin?
I have been plotting a pair of epic geometric blackwork sleeves for a few years now, and after talking to all the best tattoo artists in the city one unanimous conclusion was reached: BLING BLING ROXX. After hunting her down on the web I stumbled across her portfolio. I was left absolutely speechless. It was like the universe handed me the PERFECT tattoo artist to help me achieve my vision. I set up an appointment immediately.
The whole journey has been AMAZING! Her process is that of a true artist. From all the time she spent initially laying out the design and lines on me, to the involved and patient tweaking of everything to laser precision. She really takes her time making sure that every piece she sculpts turns to pure gold. She is also deeply in tune with the roots of tattooing: the spirituality, transcendence and healing power that it brings, and her clients all LOVE her for the perfection she delivers!!! She has the rare gift of pulling out the inner warrior in everyone she touches.
Roxx is not just a tattoo artist, but an unbelievable visionary. Conceptual. Graphic. Bold. All this plus a warm, welcoming, comfortable, beautiful and modern art gallery of a tattoo shop. It just DOES NOT get any better than this, folks.
Ok, people. I've been to my fair share of tattoo artists. I think Fishy is the best!
Fishy did a memorial tattoo for me on my arm.  The tattoo was exactly what I wanted and the colors are absolutely gorgeous. Included  in it is a ceremonial amount of ashes in the black ink...very, very small amount is all but at least I can say I have his ashes in my tattoo. He will forever be with me.
Thank you Fishy. I'll be back in a couple months for another piece.
The perfect studio. Â Amazing Artwork. Â Great people.
Ridiculously talented artists are the norm at 2SPIRIT instead of the exception. Â Roxx is a complete genius. Â I went in with an idea and she brought it to life with her picture-perfect interpretation. Â Though internationally famous for her black work, she is also a full color rock star. Â Completely professional, competent, sanitary and supportive Roxx has exceeded my every expectation.
Ben and Matt are great company and amazing artist as well. Â I can't imagine going anywhere else.
If you like gritty, tiny, claustrophobic tattoo studios, you might want to look elsewhere. Â If however you enjoy an open beautiful vibrant space surrounded by amazing art and people... you've found your spot!!!
My friend and I spent a very long day at Mojuju Tatu with the lovely Daryle. Â She was prompt and efficient and did beautiful work. Â We each got two pieces done. Â The lines are clean and the conversation and atmosphere in the studio was conducive to good times. Â My memorial tattoo for my grandmother came out beautifully as did the text I wanted done.
Suzanne and Roxx were awesome conversationalists and just gave the entire studio a relaxed vibe. Â Couldn't have asked for a greater time or better pieces done by a fabulous artist. I know I will be back to get more art done there!
Check her out in Florida (you lucky Floridians!).
We just left Mojuju Tatu after a long day and 2 inks apiece, and we could not have asked for a better experience. Daryle was perfect (check her out in Key West) and Fishy and Roxx, while not working on either of us, added amazing vibes and conversation. Â Could not be a more fantastic studio, plan to frequent in the future.
Review Source:I seriously could not have asked for a better artist and a better space to get my last tattoo done.  I walked in with some images of what I wanted, met Daryle who not only is super sweet but very cool and helpful with making my vision come to life.  After the consultation we met about a week later and she had everything drawn out perfect!  She did an amazing job with the color and detail and I'm elated with the end result of  her work!  The sad thing is that she said she said she is  moving out of state in June.  However- The other ladies in the space are very laid back and friendly, and are equally as incredible going by their previous portfolios- and the art displayed in the studio.
By the end of my 4 hour session I felt like not only did I make a new friend, but I had my best tattoo thus far. Â Trust me when I say the space is amazing. Â It's like being in an Art Gallery... Open space, great energy, good music, Â and best of all, it's off the beaten "bridge and tunnel" path.
Go there and schedule an appt with one of the talented ladies in the studio now!
How could I not give a review of Suzanne's new studio? Â This one is much bigger than Modern Electric and the one on Haight she was at combined. Â Very nice and clean, very minimal. Â I definitely love it.
Of course Suzanne does great work and I finally got my sleeve finished.
Since Suzanne is a dog lover she got to meet Daffy and let her play and get trapped in the floor to ceiling mirror. Â Talk about hilarious.
I can't imagine Suzanne creating a better parlor than this.
Parking does suck, but doesn't it always in that neighborhood? Â There are a couple lots over on Valencia and Duboce though. Â Shouldn't be hard to get a car parked for awhile.
This is Suzanne of Modern Electric and Roxx's new studio.
SB and I got left hand ring finger tattoos together on Valentines Day (awwwww!). Mojuju is a nice bright and airy space, more like an art gallery than a tattoo parlor/studio, with amazing original art (Suzanne's) on all of the walls. The whole place has a mellow vibe.
Suzanne was sweet, professional and efficient.
We both enjoyed the overall experience and will probably go back for more work. I am super pleased with my tattoo, she took an idea and made it even better AND did a great job on my small bony finger, probably not the easiest place to work on and It came out great!
