Great artists, clean shop and worth the money. Will go back for more work.

Have had all 4 of my tattoos done here, all by Nick Rodin.
My wife has had like 7 by him as well.
Excellent artist, super chill, extremely easy to relate design ideas to, great at realizing what you want on your skin.
My first tat i was super anxious but his easy-going yet professional demeanor put me at ease.
definitely getting allot more done by him.
all the other artists there seem really cool too.

It was my first time getting a tattoo.  It's a pretty expensive place, with an $80 minimum but completely worth it.  Cody did a fantastic job on mine.  He was very friendly, walked me through all the steps really well, answered all my stupid first timer questions.  If you value cheap over quality don't go here.

When I was shopping for my first tattoo, I went to a LOT of shops and I had a LOT of questions. I went to Black Heart because a friend recommended an artist who works there. Granted, his portfolio had some great work.

So I pop in their shop, and they were playing the same kind of heavy metal music I used to listen to in High School in the early 1990's very LOUDLY. Didn't seem conducive towards my being relaxed for my first tattoo.

Some guy came to help me and seemed a bit dismissive when I told him this would be my first tattoo. I asked for the artist my friend recommended, who came to meet me after a few minutes. I think he was stoned. He didn't really take time to answer many of my questions and he suggested that he would free-hand the tattoo onto me instead of letting me review a draft of what the art would look like before needle meets skin. It did not inspire confidence.

I ended up choosing War Horse Tattoo in Berkeley to do my artwork and I don't regret that decision one bit.

I worked with Kathy, who is not listed on their site (but should be). She was super nice, the tattoo is absolutely beautiful and when I wanted a tiny touch up on one of the lines, she was more than accommodating. She did it in about 5 minutes and didn't charge me for it. I get so many compliments and every time I look at my arm, I'm so thankful that I met her and trusted her work. I would highly highly recommend her to anyone.

Scott is AMAZE BALLS!!!! He created a one of a kind tattoo that exceeded my expectations. I just can't stop staring at it. Plus the guys in the shop are really down to earth and fun to be around.

Just had a great experience with Cody! A group of 4 of us wanted to get a very small tattoo done all together. With me (and the rest of the group) calling the shop multiple times trying to coordinate everything I can see how a shop would get frustrated, not Black Heart! They were patient with us and very accommodating. Cody was great at juggling our group and making us feel welcome. Our tattoo design was simple and small but he took it seriously. Lots of laughs were had and we all left feeling very happy with our tats and the experience! Cody will be at the top of my list when I want my next tattoo!

One year after having a large portrait done by Cody, the tattoo looks as good as the day I got it, if not better. It required absolutely no touch-ups, but even if it did, touch-up work is free. Great, long-lasting tattoo.

    Thanks Blackheart.

Juan is the shit. I lost a friend in a climbing accident at the beginning of the year. I wanted to get a top, tied in a figure 8, around my forearm. But I wanted it to be extremely detailed and realistic. The first person I went to (Who specialized in realism at a different shop) told me it wasn't possible.

A friend recommended Juan. I told him what I wanted and he had no doubt. And he killed it. Its perfect. If I go two days without getting a compliment on how beautiful it is, or how real it looks, its because I must have been wearing a sweatshirt.

A friend and I were looking to get tats together, and we saw Cody's art and knew he could do both my intricate and small wording as well as the kind of shading she wanted for her rose.  Cody was so easy going and quick, and we had a lot of laughs during the 2 hours we were there.  My friend's tattoo took just over an hour to create a beautiful rose about 5x6 with four colors.  We were amazed.
The shop is pretty standard, a little warm, but being right next to zeitgeist was such a bonus afterwards when we wanted some cool air and tasty beer.  I already have friends asking who the artist was, and I am happy to tell them.  I will be back as well, when that peculiar itch needs to be scratched.

Nick Rodin is one of the most professional and talented artists I have ever gotten work done from! I received his information from my brother in law who had also had work done and if I can give any advice it would be to go get some work done from him. I came in looking for a back piece and wanted a peacock and he made magic happen. I ended up getting the nape of my neck down to the bottom of my butt cheek. It took 30 hours and 6 sessions but it is the most amazing work I have ever seen - and it's on me! :) Not only to mention he covered up 3 horrible tattoos in the process. I was completely topless (and sometimes bottomless) and he made me feel very comfortable and in no way akward which is a difficult task for me.

The shop itself is very clean - the front desk is friendly and informative. From what I can see from other work at the shop all the artists are very talented too. Take my advice and have a consult with him. Check out his work and you will see exactly what I am talking about!

These guys know what they're doing. I got my first tattoo from Juan. My design was simple but included one long straight line. The tattoo came out beautifully (I have gotten a number of genuine compliments). Additionally, Juan is a nice guy and talked to me through the tattoo, which helped take my mind off of it.

Great final product and a friendly staff. I highly recommend the parlor and Juan. I'll be coming back for any future tattoo endeavors.

I just couldn't stay away from Black Heart.

A few months after Cody completed my left sleeve, I came back to get a large-ish koi fish and waves on my right torso, along the ribs and obliques.  This piece only took 2 sessions and a little over 2.5 hours under the needles.  Sure, it hurt like hell but the end result makes it all worth it!  Cody knocks it out of the park.....again!

I don't know when I'll get my next piece but I can tell you two things:  I'll be back at Black Heart and I won't be getting inked along my ribs again.

Continuing my tour of recommended tattoo parlors in the Bay Area, I was told this was the best tattoo parlor in SF. It was a cool shop but kinda gave off the impression that it was trying really hard to be. I don't remember the guy's name who tattooed me - he was forgettable. Really heavy handed and my piece scabbed up like no other tattoo I have and needs touch-up where it peeled off. I overpaid big time as well. I just don't think anyone should pay more than $150 hour for a tattoo and they were charging $180 for the new guy.

Just got my first tattoo done by Cody Miller at Black Heart Tattoo. He took a fairly simple design and did an awesome job giving it dimension and shading.

Would highly recommend his work, as well as Black Heart in general. Price wasn't bad and it was totally worth the money.

After a ton of research, following several less than satisfactory tats [at other parlors] I've decided against this place.  I don't mean to speak ill of their work; their vintage tats are beyond compare.

However they clearly lack formal training in the arts.  It's not a bad thing if you don't mind outlines, inattention to reflected light, focal point, negative space and contrast.  But photo realism and fine art are not their game.

I've given them five stars because I don't want to sully their wonderful reputation or affect their Yelp ranking.  I'd just hate know someone might go here expecting something they may not get.  TATTOOS ARE A LIFE TIME COMMITMENT.

These people are clearly committed.  I've been to their shop and I have decided I against using them for my requirements.  It by not means means you should!  I highly recommend perusing their online library.  There is clearly a tremendous amount of talent here.

I just wish it was for me!

I am in San Francisco for 5-weeks on an internship with a company called <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffav.tv&s=140ff0901c812e7ef7f4139dd9cca65600140857a85fceb0146e09bb141dd237" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://fav.tv</a> -- I have a few tattoos and recently just got my sleeve started. I thought it would be awesome to get some of my sleeve done whilst I was here, so I looked up a few places. I noticed that BlackHeart Tattoo was only a bus journey away and that it had an awesome artist called Cody.

I took in what I wanted and got it priced up. Cody delivered with perfect line work and made my tattoo really stand out.

The only real negative I got from going to Blackheart was the receptionist. He was very vague with information about the quote and interupted Cody whilst he was tattooing me a couple of times.

    Overall experience was excellent!

Getting a tattoo from a world-renowned shop like Black Heart can certainly be a daunting experience.

I'm not a stranger to ink, but compared to the volume of art that the artists wear on their skin it's easy to get the feeling that you are a novice - a poseur within hallowed walls of half-nakey pinups and skulls with flames coming out of the eye sockets.

Regardless of all that, my experience at Black Heart is one I won't forget. I somehow, miraculously, booked two appointments with Nick Rodin within a month of my initial call. The first appointment was a super quick 10 minute consult where I told Nick how I hoped to augment my existing sugar skull - he was polite and friendly, listened, asked a couple of questions, and said see you tomorrow. Who am I to doubt a pro?

When I arrived the next day Nick was ready with a stencil that he rubbed onto my arm. The design was undoubtedly gorgeous but extended down my arm in a way that I wasn't ready to commit to, and said as much to him - and with a smile, he wiped that part off, and said "you can add more on later, but you can't take any off!"

For the next two hours Nick drew away on my arm with precision and care, let me take a breather when I needed to and finished with a flourish. He asked my opinion often and seemed really pleased with my piece when he was finished which felt great - because there's no one in the world who is as attached to your piece as you as your artist, you know?

I should mention that I am in AWE of the art on my arm, he blended his design in with a design that was already there and it looks so seamless, when my friends saw it later on they remarked that it didn't even look like two tattoos, but one big beautiful piece.

I had a first-class experience with Black Heart and Nick Rodin and I will break my multi-city tattoo regime and go back to him again. Get an appointment with him, if it's the only thing you do in San Francisco.

When I was looking for my tattoo artist, I already knew the style I wanted. More old school and bold colors. After searching google/yelp, I came across Black Heart and found Nick. It took me a good 5 or so months to muster up the courage to make an appointment. I walked in on a Thursday and the shop is really nice, clean, and has a good atmosphere. I talked to the receptionist for a bit and he was really cool. I explained to him what I wanted and then Nick and I talked. They were both really nice and friendly.
After talking to Nick, I made an appointment, and after reading all the reviews I was expecting to wait a couple weeks at the least. However, I got a Monday appointment. Stoked and terrified. They also take a $80 deposit at the time of scheduling and take it out of the cost of your tattoo.
I came in at 12:30pm for my appointment but the actually tattooing didn't start until about 1:30pm because Nick had to make some changes to my sketch and fix things I didn't like. I did the lines, shading, and color in one sitting and it's about six inches long and three inches wide. There are a ton of awesome and bold colors in my tattoo that blend together perfectly. Nick did a super awesome job and it only took 2 hours for the actual tattoo. My end price was $400, although the hourly rate is $180 and my tattoo should've been about $360. That didn't bug me too much though, I mean you pay the quality of your tattoo, and he did a GREAT job and it came out exactly how I pictured it and better.
Whenever people ask me where I got my tattoo and I tell them about Black Heart, I've gotten a handful of "whoa, you got an appointment there? probably one of the best tattoo shops in SF.", which makes me even more stoked on my decision to come here.

Overall I had a great experience. Everyone was friendly and Nick was awesome. I definitely plan on coming back here in the near future.

I called today to see if I could come in within a couple of hours to get my feet tattooed. Cody was available (score!) and took great care of me. I never got that anyone had a "bad attitude" or any other negative vibe that some others have left reviews about. This was the case both when I called and when I was at the shop. Everyone there was really friendly, the shop was squeaky-clean and I had a great experience.

There's some great talent at this shop. Don't let a few bad reviews from people with bruised egos deter you.

3 years later and my  sleeve is finally done! (hey it's a journey right?) Tim Lehi is the best of the best! The shop is awesome and nothing I write here will be as good as you going to check out their work for yourself. When I can I will post pictures.

Be advised..... if they are busy tattoing, don't expect them to run up and help you right away. They are always busy and sometimes they can help you right away, sometimes you may sit there. Don't let that discourage you. You wouldn't want them to walk away during YOUR appointment.

I'm a tattooer from Los Angeles, and I've been getting tattooed for about 15 years.  I've been tattooed by some of the best tattooers in the world, Bob Roberts, Mike Wilson, Horiyoshi III, Chris Conn etc...

Long story short, when I wanted my neck tattooed, which everyone can see and a really simple design (easy to fuck up), I had Juan Puente do it, because I knew he would nail it.  After years of deliberation about my back, I decided to have Scott Sylvia do my back from my shoulders to my knees, which is now complete. In a nutshell, people who know what's up with modern tattooing know that this is pound for pound one of, if not THE best tattoo shop not only in the country, but maybe the world.  No shit.

If you ever feel brushed off or not taken seriously enough here or any shop, just remember that tattooing is really demanding work, and that these guys are very busy, so they might be a little distracted trying to focus on the job that's in (or about to be in) the chair.  When it's your turn, all that focus will be on you and your tattoo.  These guys are all really straightforward, so if you're having any doubts, just speak up! you're not gonna hurt their feelings.  Seriously, I have no reason to BS anyone, these guys have plenty of work.  If you want the best tattoos money can buy, head here.

Hey everybody, this place is it!

Arguably one of the best tattoo shops in the world, located in a city where there are so many fantastic places to get tattooed.  The aesthetics of the shop are cool as hell, but the number one thing you should be worried about when getting a tattoo is the tattoo itself.  The technical artists/craftsmen at Black Heart will be sure to set you right.

I've been tattooed here twice, by Jeff Rassier and Scott Sylvia, in that order.  I had to make my appointment for each tattooer several months in advance prior to getting tattooed.  Before I go any further, making an appointment will be the best way to get the artist you want AND IT IS WORTH THE WAIT!!!  The tattooers here are known for their highly unique style, so you will get a piece that is singular in nature and applied with a masterful technique.

The tattoo I got from Rassier was a tripped-out bulldog in the American traditional style, of course done in his own perspective.  A Rassier tattoo is instantly recognizable and is sure to satisfy you in the fact that it will be well-applied and creative.  Nobody can concoct art like him.  I've had the tattoo for years and I still love it.  The next comment is for the cheapskates reading this:  The tattoo cost me the same amount of money that multiple other tattooers had charged me for similar-sized pieces.  YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET RIPPED OFF AT BLACK HEART.  Just don't act like a douche, I guess.

The Scott Sylvia tattoo I got was a rendition of the Om album cover "Pilgrimage".  If there is anything I can say about Scott, it would be that his understanding of color theory and how it applies to tattooing is second to none.  (Not that he thinks of it that way, but who am I to know.)  Scott was super-quick applying the tattoo and it came out perfectly, not a dot of shading out of place or outside a line.  Amazing.

Now, the logistics of visiting this place might throw you off a little if you're vain, impatient or selfish.  I showed up on time for both of my appointments and had to wait roughly half an hour before I was seen.  Whatever - doesn't bother me.  I was so stoked to get tattooed by both of these artists that the wait was completely inconsequential.  This place is so busy, as evidenced by the necessity of advanced booking, that you may not be attended to instantly upon your arrival to the shop.  Cost was: average.  People, I'm no millionaire, hell, I don't even know if I'm middle class anymore.  I saved up, made my appointments, and took the trip.  It was worth it.  Both artists charged me fairly for the pieces I got.  Shop was clean.  I wasn't worried for an instant about contracting something.

The only, and I mean THE ONLY gripe I have is that the front lady was bitchy.  I had to talk to her a couple of times on the phone and when I went in;  I speak pretty much like I write, not aggressive, for sure, and she just rubbed me the wrong way.  I'm not a sensitive dude and that bothered me, so I could only imagine how a normal person calling or stopping by would feel.  If you end up feeling neglected by the front staff, just remember the end result will be all worth the trouble...

Because I have been burned before, and have two tattoos that basically suck cuz I was young and dumb when I got them, I did a TON of research before I made an appointment with Scott Sylvia at Blackheart.

Scott normally does Asian and Tribal, so when I gave him the pictures I wanted my tattoo based off of (one was a Georgia O'Keefe painting called Pansies, the other is the Kilklispeen Celtic Cross) I was curious to see how he would interpret and combine both of these ideas.

Needless to say I was totally blown away with his design. Both the flowers and the cross came out so perfect and so close to the reference pictures I had given him. I get so many compliments from all different types of people about the colors and the design. I always make sure to tell people exactly where I got it and who did it -so here's hoping you are getting some business out of it, Scott!

It had been so long (almost 20 years) since I had gotten a tattoo I was practically a virgin again, and was very nervous about tackling a 1/2 sleeve, but Scott was super fast and very light handed. All in all, the entire thing took 3 sittings and about 9-10 hours. Yes, it was somewhat expensive, but, HELLO!!! Permanent artwork on your body! Not something you want to cheap out on. I think the final price was about $1200 before tips. But so totally worth it.

I posted pictures of my tattoo. The black and white background just makes the entire thing pop. And I wanted bright bold colors which he totally came through on.

Oddly enough, one of the reasons I chose Scott is because we have the same last name, which is not a very common one. We still haven't figured out if we are related, but we are probably 3rd or 4th cousins. Small world!

The shop itself is clean and cozy. Other artists dropped by from time to time to chat, which was nice cuz it can get kinda boring sitting there for 3 or 4 hours straight. Plus, afterwards you can go get a killer Bloody Mary at Zeitgiest.

I have two tattoos done by Nick Rodin from Black Heart Tattoo and I could not be more pleased with them.

The first time it was a walk-in, and I am so happy I got Nick. Although all artists seem great (seriously, just check their massive portfolio full of incredible inks while you wait), Nick was amazing throughout the process. I took him a photo I printed out off the web and he delivered art.

The second time I requested Nick specifically because I knew he would be the one who could get my vision and do it better. Again, the whole experience was 5 stars. He pays attention on what you have to say, he does his moditifications accordingly, and he delivers magic. My piece is a floral motiff inspired by a William Morris design. Aaaand, it is all done in black / shades of black. Now it is quite a different task to do a floral, full of details and perspective, using only black ink. Not easy, people!

I seriously don't get all the complaints about attitude. You are getting a tattoo done at the best tattoo shop in town. Please leave your pacifier at home, toughen it up, and enjoy the ride.

I was recommended to this place from a So Cal artist at the Tattoo Expo in Cow Palace.

I got some work done here almost a year ago. And being that life really does get in the way of things I have yet to go back to get pictures done for the artist's portfolio. I will and I very much intend to...... it's just darn life. Please don't lose faith in me yet.

My guy was awesome, my initial consultation consisted of him outlining the general area and communicating with me exactly what I wanted. I'm not so good with conveying thoughts into words but he got exactly what I was trying to say.

When my work was done it was a true piece of art. Everytime someone gets a peek of it they immediately follow with a compliment and ask where I got it done. From sweet old men at art galleries to tatted up club whore, they all take a moment to stop and stare.

I love this place and if ever I was to get another tattoo I would go here.

I got my first tattoo here about a year ago. It took me so long to Yelp about it because I've always put it off. I've finally decided that anybody's experience at any tattoo or piercing place is much, much more important in helping people decide where to go than deciding where to eat for dinner.

I expected the experience to be more personable but I can't even remember the name of my tattoo artist. I think it was Tim? Or Nick? Or something? Nor can I remember his face very well. (I tried to look him up to match him with a name, but I just can't remember).

It was my first tattoo so I expected to get a little more guidance from the tattoo artist. My "consultation" involved me standing in front of the front desk and him looking at my picture saying "okay I can do this." I asked him if he needed to keep the drawing and he just told me no. I just needed to bring the image during the actual tattoo session. I got more advice from catching another tattoo artist, Colin, at Body Manipulations during his smoke break! (And I don't know why he recommended me to Black Heart rather than just doing it himself! I kick myself about that, to this day!)

I didn't feel like anyone was particularly nice to me. The receptionist that everyone said was a sweetie always just stared at me, the way most people stare at someone when they're trying to figure out whether or not they've met them somewhere before. It was just sort of a blank look, not quite nasty or friendly. But frankly it made me feel out of place.

The tattoo came out almost exactly like the picture EXCEPT I had asked to remove a "swoosh" from the original picture during my consultation with him but he left it in. I am not completely dissatisfied with the addition, but it just showed the complete disconnect between me and the tattoo artist. He obviously forgot all the requests I had made on the tattoo during the consultation and me being more nervous about getting the tattoo completely forgot to remind him again. But should it be necessary for me to have to remind him? Shouldn't he have been more professional and had a sketch ready before the day of my actual tattoo? It just doesn't make sense.

I am not dissatisfied with my tattoo. I actually like it. The artistry is good but based on the experience I am not coming back.

Oh yeah, fyi, he charges $150/hour. It was a two hour appointment but it only took 1 hour 30-45 minutes. He still charged me the full $300. When you're charging $150 an hour, I would think charging part of the hour would suffice, but I'm not kicking myself over that. I don't quite know the tattoo-er's code on that matter.

I'd give them 6 stars if possible.  Yes, they're that good.  I've been going to Scott Sylvia & Jeff Rassier from when they were at 222 and there's not a day that goes by when I'm not complimented on my sleeves.  Incredible work, artistry and knowledge.

This is a serious tattoo shop!  Be prepared to wait for an appointment and it won't be cheap.  But do you REALLY want a cheap tattoo?

    My highest rating!

I came in here with a handful of photographs and a whole lot of ideas.  Nick turned it into ART.
When I got my one other tattoo long ago on the East Coast I came in, saw the finished design, thought "well, it's not what I was thinking, and I don't really like it, but since we're here why don't I go ahead and get it PERMANENTLY TATTOOED ON MY BODY." Yeah, young and stupid.  But at Black Heart I saw the final design and thought "well, it's not what I was thinking - it's so much BETTER!"
Seriously, who creates realistic looking wood-grain with a needle and some ink?  Nick, that's who.  He's also a really nice guy and the studio itself is gorgeous - lots of cool stuff to look at to distract yourself.
Can't recommend it enough.  Fantastic experience from start to finish.  Great tunes too!

I got my first tattoo here. Unfortunately, I don't remember the "artist"'s name, but I'm pretty sure he was still in training. I gave him a printed, very simple black design. I was put almost on the hallway, on a table in full view of everyone walking by (there was no wall). The tattoo was more painful than necessary (I've had 5 more done since, and I know when someone is heavy handed), he scarred my skin, and actually made a mistake in the tracing! There's an extra line that leads nowhere that he didn't even correct.

I would not risk it coming here. They're overpriced, snobby and you might just get the trainee of the week and end up like me. I've found an amazing artist ever since, and I will stick with him.

I got my first (and only) tattoo done here in oct of 08. I strangely can't remember the artist's name but I believe it was cody. I absolutely LOVE my tattoo and I get so many compliments on it but there are a few things that bothered me about this place.

First of all, I don't look like a girl who gets a bunch of tattoos and they treated me as such from the moment I walked in the door. But hey, I understand, everyone judges people to a certain degree, I just wish they would have seen me as a PAYING CUSTOMER, I wasn't asking to be their best friend.

Secondly, I think just about every artist in the place straight up laughed out loud at the art I was getting, ESPECIALLY the one tattooing me! Granted, it was a picture of ariel, the little mermaid, but they were quite rude about it, good thing I have thick skin.

Five stars for the work done, I really do love it, but the 3 stars for customer service bring the rating down to a 4.

I've gotten two tats here. One by Cody and one by Nick. Both did an awesome job!! I think the shop can improve on customer service, but really I don't mind because my tat is my main concern! Highly recommended! I love my tattoos Cody did a beautiful hummingbird and Nick did a star on my finger. I have no complaints on my tattoos!

P.s. I don't think Cody had a heavy hand. He was actually really gentle and  I never had to go back for a touch up.

    Okay-

So I showed up to get my tattoo.  All went fine.  Some critiques:

    1.  My artist, Cody, did good work, but was definitely the most heavy handed tattoo artist I've ever had.  I have a tattoo on my ribs.  I'm no baby--I don't flinch but it was like he was carving into stone, not flesh.

    2.  Not only  was I overcharged (I'm an awesome tipper from years as a waitress) but when I called to resolve the matter I got some 'tude over the phone over it despite leaving a nice tip, based on the wrong price! Not cool.  Definitely a shop with the "holier than thou-I'm covered in tatts and you're not mentality" even though I've got more tatts than I can count on both hands.

    3.  I didn't get much artistry, just tracing and drilling.  Thank goodness my artwork was great, but some vision might have been cool.

NEVER going back and will not recommend to friends, but I'm sure they don't care! I hope you enjoyed all the extra cash guys!

Update: My color is HORRIBLY uneven.  Going to have to pay someone else to repair the damage.  GRRRR. Worst tattoo experience ever! Run away!

I've wanted to get a tattoo for a long time, and finally decided to get it done.  After doing some research and reading the reviews on Yelp, I decided on Black Heart.

I set up an appointment with Cody Miller.  I wanted to get one of the better known artists but I didn't want to wait that long and I had an exact design that I wanted that was fairly simple, so I thought that it wouldn't matter as much.

I went in on the day of my appointment with the design I wanted (a simple black design of something my grandfather drew years ago about 8 in x 5 in big), and Cody copied it and gave me options for various sizes.  However, my friend noticed that he copied the design wrong!  I was probably too nervous/excited to pay that much attention, and thank goodness my friend was there to see the difference!  We told Cody, and he acted very casual about it, and just said, oh, I'll correct that once I transfer it to your skin.  This DID NOT make me confident about the tattoo.

After transferring the design on my leg, Cody began tattooing.  He was pretty quiet the entire time, and only talked too me when the music stopped playing briefly.  He also joked  around a bit with the other artist who was there. Just casual banter, but it made me a little nervous.  In the end, the tattoo came out perfect,  and I love it.

I'm giving this place 4 stars because the most important thing to me is the tattoo, and it came out looking fantastic.  The fact that I almost go the wrong tattoo on my leg is a little scary, but that's partially my responsibility too since I need to be the one that checks a design before getting it inked on me.

Pro - The tattoo came out fantastic looking.  Price I thought was reasonable, but probably on the high side.  Love the new tattoo I have.
Con - Cody copied down the design wrong in the beginning, and wasn't the most comforting, especially considering I was a first timer.

I came here to get my very first tattoo after getting a recommendation from an artist in SoCal. Cody Miller was great. He was all business in our consultation, and put a nice creative spin on the script I was getting done on my ribs. I was nervous about getting the tattoo in such a painful spot, so he was very honest about how much pain I would have to endure (and he was right, it hurt like crazy!) I'm sure I looked totally out of place walking into a place like this...but loved it instantly when I was greeted by Cody's adorable little dog that runs around the shop.

The actual place was spotlessly clean and there was never a doubt in my mind about the sterility of the needles they used. The other guys that work there were very informative and talked me through the whole process.

I am loving my new tattoo, and will definitely be back when it's time to get another one (I hear they're addictive!)

I recommend this place for the sake of the well known artists here, I've seen their work and it's awesome.

However, I don't recommend Cody. Man of few words, don't get to see how your tat is going to look like till he draws it on you the day of. Second, I showed him exactly what I wanted and he failed to capture the essence of it, he used thick lines instead of fine lines to outline it, and he completely missed 3 lines in the tat. Lacking attention to detail? Not to mention I waited almost an hour after my appointment time for me to go in.

I had a tattoo done here by Cody. I'm really happy with it. He did a great job and it was cheap!!!! 160 dollars for 1 hour (2 tattoos). Cody was great. he had a dry sense of humor that works when u r under pain! And was not the least bit condescending when i was being a chicken lol.
all in all i am going back there for my third and final tattoo as soon as i can!!

YES I did get ONE of my tats done at this place.

    BUT

I had set up an appointment to see the art work before the needle was going to be put to my skin, a week before I was to go in for for the work.

When I called I was told  "The ARTIST's"  does NOT do that, even though when I went initially, I was told I would be able to see the work before it was done.

I had to use my second choice for the work & he was very accomodating.

I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone that cares to SEE the work being done to them BEFORE it is done..

The EGOs are bigger than the store & no matter how talented the artists  guess who is PAYING you ME.

After looking at the other reviews on here I see Hanna A. on here had EXACTLY the same problem as I did with the place its good to know they do not discriminate ...

I have since had other work done at Gotham & other studios in the city & they all did not have a problem showing me & letting me have INPUT for what is going to be on my body for the REST OF MY LIFE.

& sorry for the 1 Star but you only get 1 chance to screw up on a tat that I have to live with.

When it comes to tattoo aficionados, everyone around the world has heard about the legends who work and own Blackheart tattoo. I was lucky enough to get acquainted with Rassier, Tim, and Scott when I knew nothing about tattoos and they've been schooling me ever since. You can absolutely not go wrong once you step into one of their work spaces.

I got my first tattoo at Blackheart and have been going back whenever I can squeeze into one of their appointment books. Those books are full usually 6 months in advanced, so if you get an appointment there, don't let anything stop you from keeping it. Nick Rodin is a reasonably new hire with extremely huge talent and sometimes slightly easier to get a session with than the three owners.

I had mines done at a chop shop. This place was recommended by a friend so I took another friend here to get his second tattoo. The wait time for an appoint was about 2 months. Waiting and waiting. Finally after initial appointment to consultation to tattooing took about 5 months.

The work was nice, great amount of detail. Just parking here is hell. Feeding the meter every so often because parking here is a biitch.

I had wanted to get a tattoo on my back for the longest time.  My friend had gotten a tattoo from Scott and I thought the line work and shadowing was really good.

During my very brief consultation, I told him the elements that I wanted and how I wanted it to be laid out.  On the day of getting my tat, he showed me the drawing he designed and it surpassed my expectations.  He completed my tat (top to bototm on my back) in 4 hours and it looks amazing!!!  I absolutely LOVE IT!

    Thanks Scott!!

Scott Sylvia did my arm and wow.  A simple concept executed as well as it could be done.  Fast (if you don't count the three month waiting period to get an appointment, which is totally worth it), easy, and looks fantastic.

Scott kicks ass.  My next tattoo will definitely be here.

    Awesome!
I got my 1/4 sleeve done by Scott Sylvia and he did an amazing job.  I took a book of butterflies for Scott to look at, because I wanted them to look realistic.  Let me tell you, he nailed it!  I have a monarch on my sholder, and it looks like it's going to fly off at any moment.  He is so talented, and listened to exactly what I wanted!

I got this done about 3 years ago and I still get compliments on it.  I moved away, but when I move back to SF, I've got to book another appointment with him.  He's so funny, and really just joked with my husband and I the whole time so I didn't even focus on the pain.

It takes about 2 months to get in, but the talent is definatly worth the wait, it is going to be on your body forever!

I did a lot of research, really its true, before getting it done. I wanted color and a lot of it. Feminine colors too, not..  I got a hold of some crayons at the Dollar Tree and scribbled on my arm color.  Spend the money, its well worth it. To be honest, its a damn steal for what your getting. I am going back..I just have to wait about 3 month to get in. I probably shouldn't have yelped him...

having so many friends who are tattoo artists makes it extremely difficult for me to go to a new shop. first, i don't know anyone there at first and knowing people in shops comes with so many benefits. tattoo shops are always like second families when you get to know the people there. second, although i hear good things about the work they do, it's always a trust factor to get something permanently etched into your skin by someone you haven't met before you're handing over an $80 non-refundable deposit.

with that said, i can comfortably say i will return to black heart. when i first walked in, on a whim as i happened to have a spare $200 i'd rather have blown on a tattoo rather than bills, and asked when the soonest i could get an appointment was, i was surprised to find out i could get in the next day. i paid my $80 deposit and dreamt that night of how awesome the newest addition to my skin would be.

i showed up to meet with nick rodin, he took the design i wanted, drew up a transfer, and we got to work. i must say, i'm extremely glad to have taken the leap of faith because i will be back to see nick for another piece very soon. the work i got had a lot of fine lines to which he stayed very true to.

overall, the shop looks very clean and i really like all the artwork up around the joint. filling a shop up with flash says one thing. creating custom art to fill the space says another. and i'd much rather trust my permanent artwork to someone of the more creative sort.

This place just makes me happy.

Scott did some amazing work for me, the kind that causes people to gasp.  He seems to be particularly adept at fitting tattoo designs into the flow and shape of a body, resulting in something that's in it's very own class.  The guy's great, I'll likely be back for more.  Oh, and he's quick.

The shop's nice.  Obviously extremely clean, each artist has his own station which he can close with curtains if that's necessary, and the folks are relatively nice considering how in demand the artists are.  But seriously, these guys are so good I'd get tattooed by them in a prison messhall.

I can't say enough about my favorite tattoo shop. Scott Sylvia has done basically all of my upper sleeves and chest and once I can make the commitment to have full sleeves, he is definitely the man for the job. I got my first tattoo from him at 222 Tattoo, then at Temple Tattoo in Oakland, and now he is partial owner of Black Heart. Not only is Black Heart an aesthetically pleasing shop, it's a clean and friendly environment. Feel like having some privacy? Every artists' area has curtains that can be drawn around it.

Looking for an amazing artist who will lay ink that you'll still appreciate ten years from now? Go to Black Heart and check out their portfolios.

I just got my first tattoo done at Black Heart, by Jeff Rassier. I did extensive research before finally choosing a place, and I was lucky enough to book an appointment only a couple of weeks after I dropped by the shop the first time. I brought in a picture and Jeff sketched up a design and made it a bit more interesting, and changed around details with no attitude or sullenness whatsoever. I would highly recommend this place, and Jeff if anyone is thinking of getting tattooed. He isn't too talkative, but very professional and friendly. I posted a picture of the cherry blossoms I got!

Everything you need in getting a tattoo.
    - Clean
    - Safe
    - Varied artistic styles in each artist
    - Enthusiastic artists
    - Experienced
    - World renowned
    - in San Francisco

This is where people should go to get a tattoo.  While not cheap, you'll never have to worry about the quality of the work.  They will work with you to design or create exactly what you are looking for, no standard flash art here.  The "artists" are more than just tattoo experts, they dabble in paints, and sketches, etc.  The whole team is relaxed and all about the work.  Appointments are necessary and worth the wait.  Chances are anyone who knows tattoos will know one of the artist from Black Heart, especially if you live in S.F.

    Now go get some ink.

    ThanX.

Someone noticed my half sleeve that was done by Tim Lehi and immediately recognized it as his work. We then went into talking about Black Heart and the guy said they are like the New York Yankees of
Bay Area tattoo shops. While I absolutely despise the Yankers, he was spot on: everyone at this shop is pretty much cream-of-the-crop. Currently I've gotten my half sleeve done by Tim, a piece on my bicep by Jeff Rassier, and 3 separate pieces done by Scott Sylvia. I'm extremely happy with each piece, I'm even going to go back to Tim for a back piece next year. I'll probably be going back to Jeff at some point too.

I could go on for hours about how awesome the work these guys all do is, but you can see testimony to that for yourself on their website. What I really like about this shop is how professional and on top of their game they are when it comes to dealing with their customers. Tattoo artists can be notorious for being major flakes and having serious attitude but I never experienced any of that at Black Heart. Both of the shop girls who have worked there since I've been going there were very friendly and helpful. They also call you to confirm appointments, and when one of my appointments with Tim was cancelled they called me a month and a half in advance to let me know, as opposed to the morning of or not at all like some shops are known to do. Obviously these guys know how many great tattoo shops there are in the Bay Area and they've done alot to make sure they stand out as one of the best.

I had a tattoo done by Scott Sylvia last Thursday.  I had waited to see him since March and it was worth the wait.  I originally had a hibiscus flower on the back of my left shoulder.  I wanted to put that hibiscus on a vine that crept over my shoulder along with more flowers.  A month ago I went in to speak with Scott about my ideas.  Although I had a few pictures and a general idea, I really wanted to see what he would come up with.  The piece I ended up with is a little more substantial than I originally thought I would get but it's absolutely gorgeous.  Although substantial it's extremely feminine which softens it.  I love it!

Scott, along with the other owners of Blackheart, are incredible artists.  Scott is a great guy.  He was very funny right off the bat telling me he doesn't like people.  But once he's working he's very talkative and fun.  Then once you're done, he's done.  Hilarious!  But what is most important is that he does beautiful work.  I am excited to have him design a tattoo I've had in my head for 7 years.  I know he will do a great job as he is a true artist.

Ok obviously if I'm going to go back and have them tattoo me again I'm going to give them five stars... cause that shit's permanent.

Anyways I went in to get some background clouds around some older work I'd had done by Sunny Buick. I picked Scott Sylvia based on numerous recommendations (he's tattoo'ed a few folks I know) and the fact that he did gorgeous american traditional and japanese work which was more up my alley. It must have been a relatively easy job for him albeit time consuming but he did a gorgeous job. Got it just the shade of lavendery blue I wanted and it compliments my older work quite well. He also added in some cherry blossoms around some older work on my chest and around the rest of the piece on my arm. He has a really nice light touch and tells some pretty funny stories.

I have a friend getting a bunch of work done right now by Tim Lehi that's amazing. I also have an ex that had work done by Jeff Rassier that's also incredible. Screw it, all the guys in there do incredible work. In my mind Blackheart is one of the best shops to get a tattoo at, if not the best. These guys have been in the business a long time and are pretty well known. The shop itself is really cool as well. They blast rockin' music and have a nice sense of style in terms of decor. I particularly dig Scott's collection of tattoo guns he has on his wall.

It also seems that they've updated their website (finally) and it's really really nice. So if you haven't been by lately take a look. And to echo someone else's review, they take credit cards which is a huge plus. They do require an $80 cash deposit to hold appts. My rate was $150.00 an hour and my total cost was very reasonable with tip. Be prepared for a long wait for an appt though. Mine was over 3 months for Scott and my boyfriend has a 6 month wait for Tim that he's still working on.

*Edit:*  My friend and I just got matching pieces done below our elbows by Scott. He did such an awesome job on the color and shading. I'm now pondering what I should get done next by him!

The staff is really nice. They made sure I felt safe and comfortable. All in all; I would say it was a great experience.

One of the perks  is the location!  After you ink is done, you can go next door to zeitgeist and elevate your endorphin high with a cold beer and a burger.

Well, it took me 46 years to get over the fact that I didn't want to be a sagging old biddy in a Posey vest strapped to a wheelchair at the old folks home, drooling into my dinner tray, yet only know as the "old lady with the tattoos".

When I am at that nursing home, I will be know as the "old lady with the DOG tattoos".

Yep, I had Mo' (RIP) and Gus (RIP) drawn for eternity onto meself.  Tim Lehi is my master (dog) artist; he looked at photos I brought in and listened patiently as I yammered on about my dogs.  Then he sketched and etched and I walked out with these incredible tattooes!  The dogs look amazingly alive and real!  These are true portraits.

I waited two monthes for my first appointment and another six months for the second appointment----Tim is THAT booked.  I was ready to make another appointment but he does not have an appointment book for next year yet!  I still have a few more dogs that need immortalization, so this may take a while.

There are other artists in the shop and it seems as if they are all busy...to me that speaks volumes.  There are photo albums of the artists' work on the counter and the designs are incredible.  It seems loads of out-of-towner people come in to look because they have heard of Black Heart.....the last time, there were a bunch from Texas...so word of mouth must have tongues a-waggin'

Another 5 stars for these purveyors of bloody skin doodling. The overall atmosphere and location of this shop speak to the quality of work - it's clean and nice and well-appointed, and that means the artists are providing the kind of top-notch work that let's them charge more than enough to pay the rent and feed their pets.

Speaking of pets, Jeff Rassier has a cute little dog with one of the stubbiest, waggiest tails I have ever seen. Jeff has done a cover-up, touch-up, and most of the sleeve on my right arm, and his work is great. I especially appreciated his work on the touch-up and cover-up; these are generally disliked by tattooers, from what I understand, but he handled both happily. His original work on my right arm is equally delightful, with a capital rad. Personality-wise, he's not the chattiest artist in there, but he has a good sense of humor and makes one feel at ease.

One of the most important elements of a tattoo shop is the music they play; this place does not disappoint, as the music is generally loud, fast, and hard, like a screaming boner of lightning, or something to that effect. Anyway, it's the kind of music that makes sense to listen to while tattooing is involved.

If you are concerned about how much a tattoo will cost, you shouldn't come here; you should start fucking tattoo artists, as that's the only way I know of getting great tattoos cheaply.

A friend who had some amazing sleeves referred me to Tim at Black Heart. He warned me that I should book well in advance, and he was right. I went in Dec 2006 for a consultation where I brought in some images and discussed what I was going for: a 1/4 sleeve that spilled onto the right pec. I liked Tim's ideas for composition and he seemed very open and comfortable doing a pieced based on Buddhist, Thai, and Tibetan art. My first appointment would be in May 2007.

It was well worth the wait. Tim stenciled some of the elements and free-handed the rest of the pattern. With a quick and fine hand, he laid down the whole outline in just under 2.5 hours. Great execution of detail and a balanced/flowing composition. I've been getting nothing but gushing praise - and it's just the outline. I can't wait for my next appointment in June for the coloring/filling.

Great shop, and Tim Lehi is excellent at what he does.  He started a sleeve for me when he was working at another shop, and then I followed him to Blackheart when it opened.  Strangers see his work on my arm and recognize it as his; it's uncanny.  Well, this isn't a tutorial on how to choose a shop/artist, and there are of course other great ones out there (though as far as SF goes, there are few that can compete), so I'll just finish by saying I'll definitely be going back to Tim for my next piece (whenever the heck that might be...).

Writing this review almost seems redundant after reading the previous ones, but her it goes anyway.  My boss received full sleeves from Tim Lehi over the course of 2006 and they are both amazing pieces.  So when I decided to get some new work done Tim seem the logical choice.  So I set up a consultation and went with my ideas.  Tim took a look and said no problem.  Went to make an appointment and the receptionist behind the counter told me it would be 4 months.  Holy shit I thought.  When the appointment finally rolled around and the first session was over I realize that it was worth the wait.  Tim is an amazing artist and probably one of the best in the city.
I have friends who have work by others in the shop and they are all amazing at what they do!  Definitely the best shop in a heavily saturated city.

I contacted Black Heart Tattoo for a photo project I'm currently working on.  I was/am in search of models who have a considerable amount of work done, and decided to just drop in.  Scott Sylvia was awesome in allowing me to come back to the shop with all of my equipment and get some shots done.  While waiting for him to finish up a tattoo on somone, one of the other artists (Nick) modeled for me as well.  Both were gracious and helped me out big time.

I also had a lot of time to flip through the portfolios while I was sitting there, and the work is amazing.  I always thought I'd be exclusive to my artist back home on the east coast, but I'm thinking my next piece may very well be coming from Black Heart.

And for other poor college students such as myself....  they take credit cards!  Yessssssss!!!!

I just got my first tattoo from them, by Mr Whitehead.  It came out so great, like I was really apprehenisive about it, and I was worried that it would look smooshed or all screwed up, but it looks great.  Jeff pays close attention to detail, asks for your input every step of the way, does perfect linework, and is so fast!  Sweet!  This looks killer.  Maybe I'll get another...

My cousin came all the way from Brooklyn just to get a tattoo from a guy at Black Heart.

When it comes to tattoo's you shouldn't shop around for a low price (it ain't a car honey!) Go with the best artist you can find. And if  you are on the market to get some work done,  don't go any further.  Scott Silvia did my 1/2 sleeve and it is amazing. Not only is he a light/fast hand -  He did exactly what I wanted -  within reason.  He convinced me not to go to dense with the cosmic theme on my arm,  and he was totally right.  It looks magnificent.  And 'the little prince' at the center of it all is an exacting replica.  The other guys (Jeff Rassier, Jeff Whitehead, and Tim Lehi) are all amazingly talented as well.  Worth every penny.
