I don't usually write reviews, and when I do, it's because I've had a horrible experience and feel a responsibility to warn others.

However, FU Tattoo is exceptional and at the very least deserves exceptional feedback. I've been to several tattoo shops all up and down the coast, from Oregon, Nevada, and of course, throughout Northern and Southern California. I was searching for a tattoo shop in the city I just moved to and was reminded of why I love FU and was inspired to finally write this review.

Firstly, the staff is friendly. I know that word gets thrown around a lot in reviews, but a lot of shops I've been to are simply not nice. The absence of that whole, "I'm a cool tattoo artist and don't need to be agreeable because your tattoo ideas are lame" vibe was a pleasant change from the other shops on the coast. I'm not saying that tattooers are not artists, and are not entitled to respect regardless of whether or not they return it, but it's nice to not worry about getting turned away for wanting something that doesn't fall into typical tattoo categories (I've had a tattooer tell me they wouldn't tattoo me because they're really into Japanese and Americana right now, and my tattoo idea was neither).

Secondly, they are creative geniuses, but are willing to ask each other for help when necessary. I was unfortunate and silly enough to receive a tattoo that was frankly not well thought out, and required a cover up. It took me a long while to decide where to go for the cover up, because I've seen bad tattoos turn into absolutely shitty messy blobs when people attempt to haphazardly cover them. However, the crew really pulled a team effort and literally sat and brainstormed collectively on how to tackle my piece. It is an amazing relief to look down at my body and once more be satisfied with what I see.

Lastly, they are honest. I am not an artist at all, and while I appreciate art immensely, I do not have an eye for whether or not something would make an appropriate tattoo, or what it takes to take a painting, for example, and make it jive with a tattoo idea (which is how my need for a cover up began). But these folks will not merely take your half cooked idea, slap it on your body and take your dollahs- they'll actually let you know if it's realistic and if it is not, will not shoo you away, but will work out a few ideas with you. Again, I've had some less than friendly encounters with various tattooers either telling me "no" without explanation or "yes" when they should have told me I'm being impossible.

    K, that's it.

I went under the gun here for n almost full back piece of a video game character.  They were EXTREMELY friendly and extremely helpful.  5 hours of work with one short smoke break later, I had this beautiful piece of art on my back.  I'm impressed with the service and the prices.  If you're looking for really cool guys and really wonderful work for a decent price, I recommend FU Tattoo.

I got my first (and thus far only) tattoo here a couple years ago, so I don't have other experiences to compare it with, but it was pretty awesome and I have no complaints. I didn't have to shop around long for an artist because once I looked at Hudge's portfolio I was sold. A lot of the work displayed in the shop is American old school and pin-up styles (which I can appreciate but don't want permanently on my body), so at first I thought I might not find the right person there for the art I wanted. But flipping through Hudge's work, I saw he had done a sleeve of angels and a sleeve of demons on this dude's arms and it looked like friggin Michelangelo himself decided after doing the Sistine Chapel that he'd get into the tattoo business. I thought, "if you can do that you can do anything." And Im pretty sure Hudge can.

I may have asked for Hudge at a busy time or maybe he always has a wait, Im not sure, but it took a couple weeks or up to a month to see him. I didn't mind because it gave me time to visualize and commit to the piece and for him to draw up a killer sketch.

Hudge knows what he wants as an artist so you might have to compromise with him, but he really knows what he's doing so I'd follow his lead. He wants to do justice to his work so don't ask for a small phoenix like I did at first, haha, because with some subjects you should go big or go home, and he'll pretty much tell you so.

After two sessions I had a beautiful, amazingly detailed and shaded (and to my parents' dismay, very BIG) phoenix tat. Hudge would have made it even bigger if I'd let him with lots of clouds for a background but he let me tone it down. It would have been even more epic Im sure but my parents may have disowned me.

All in all its a bunch of goofy and fairly friendly dudes who really know what they are doing. It runs $100/hr as I recall but I think thats standard for good artists...a big thumbs up for these guys!

I really love this shop. The people are great, the place is clean, the artwork is good and the prices are decent. The only thing that has ever bugged me is that they have a limit of 30 min, or $60. So if youre looking for something small, maybe another place would be better. But I do still love the shop to death!

This was my first tattoo experience & I couldn't be happier with what I believe to be one of the best tattoos I've ever seen ....of course, I know I'm a bit bias....

I searched a lot of portfolios trying to find something I could relate to.  I'm very particular and I'm a girl that knows what she wants.  However, I am not an artist so I knew I had to find someone that I could relate to regarding their work and talent.

Hudge's portfolio matched my tastes and I gave him a lot of freedom in the design and placement.  I'm happy with every last bit of it.  Great fit to my body, great art to my concept, great color to my liking.  And best of all, a great experience during the entire process.

I never thought I would get a tattoo, but now I'm thinking about the next one.  I will definitely go back to Hudge.

Amanda is an amazing artist.  She is fast and efficient and most importantly her work always looks great.  I highly recommend her.  Not only is she good at what she does, but she also has a pleasant demeanor.

I met a super cool gal a few years ago who had some tats done by Nick at FU. Her tats have a sort of street fem look, just like my Lotus tat does. I have some petals added to my Lotus every 3 or 4 years and knew Nick would be perfect for this. He added my petals, made the scrolling look better than it did, and charged me a very reasonable price. Next time I need some more petals added I will be back in Nick's chair for sure.

First of all, I have no complaints of their talent; my friends tattoo turned out pretty good however the staff was not very accomadating and we sat waiting for what felt like FOREVER while they sketched which would have been ok if he were diligently working however he was goofing off and taking what sounded like personal phone calls. The service felt unprofessional and lacked customer service we expected. Not going back.

This place is super great. They're super clean, GREAT customer service, and the artists are amazing. Just got a small piece with my best friend, and Ron was the best! If you're worried about the negative reviews about him, DON'T listen. Those people are babies who need to shut the hell up. He was super helpful, super detailed and super honest (which is awesome!) I would recommend this shop to anyone, and I will rep Ron all day everyday! I WILL be going back...

    OK, First off....
Ron is off the hook... I got tatted up here 7 years ago and just moved to Capitola, so I thought my best friend and I could get our matching tattoos here. We walked in today and Ron was EXTREMELY helpful, patient and worked with us in finding the perfect place, size and design for our tats.

When we were done, he gave us some stickers, a t shirt and sent us on our way.

EXCELLENT customer Service, RON rocks, and was super hepful and it was an awesome experience!!! :)

I give FU 3 stars. I got a tattoo from a guy named Ron who lacked customer service skills and had a little bit of an attitude. Everyone there had a weird attitude...not a good kind of weird either. The tattoo turned out good but Ron kept saying I was being too nit picky...which I wasn't, I was just telling him how I wanted the tattoo. Over all just a weird vibe. Random: I found a little bag of weed on the floor in there...

If you can't stand the heat then maybe you shouldn't be getting a tattoo...

I love these guys.  They always have something funny to tell you, or gross, or maybe a little crude... but it sure takes your mind off of how much that needle really hurts. ;)  When ever I get that ever so annoying question, "Did that hurt?" I always answer "I don't know".  And I mean it!  Because the amazing music and laid back atmosphere at FU tattoo makes you forget.

This weekend a friend and I randomly wanted to get tattooed.  We jumped in the car drove down to Santa Cruz and had an appointment the next day with Freddy.  (He's a guest artist, catch him when you can.)

All the guys that work there are top notch amazing artist.  You won't be disappointed. To all those haters out there, when I say artist I mean artist, if you handle the process then go get a stick and poke from your mom! ;(...

I have gotten tattoos from several artists in Santa Cruz working out of different shops and Miki is definitely my preferred tattooist. His many years in the business shows in every step of the tattoo process and we are lucky to have him in this town. Thank you Miki for your beautiful work, I will cherish it always.

I had been recommended Miki by several people while looking for an artist for my back piece, so I took a stroll over (I used to live down the st) to check it out. I talked with Miki for a bit about my ideas, I showed him some pictures of what I wanted for my back piece, he saw what  I already had in that area to work with and said he would draw something up. A couple weeks later I go in for my appointment and see what he did- It was perfect! Exactly what I had pictured, even though I was a bit vague about it. I knew Miki was my artist.

I also had him do a cover up for me, which I love! I had already been coming to him for over a year at the time, and had seen a ton of his work, so I knew it would be great- he basically drew it on me and winged it based on the ideas I threw at him, and it also came out exactly as I had pictured it.  This guy is good! He has done a good majority of my full back piece so far, a cover up and I already have plans for lots of other things, and I'm sure Miki will be doing all of them! He is really versatile and always willing to try out different things. He's not limited to one style, and that is really admirable in a profession of people that only want to do Day of the Dead skulls or whatever they feel like they are into at that moment.

I mean come on people, their name is F*U. You gotta have a certain level of expectation when you walk into the place. If you want some stupid looking flash or have some unreasonable request, then yeah they will shoot you down-but usually offer some alternative suggestion- unless you are rude, a dick, or just plain dumb. It's not the kind of place where they have a $20 tramp stamp special on flash.

If you want some real art, something unique and really awesome, well then you should definitely check out FU.

They are cash only, just a heads up- but theres and ATM at the liquor store and also at the coffee shop across the street.

My tattoo artist was this tiny little man with a pretty big attitude. I had a printout of what I wanted so it really did not take a lot of planning or interaction with the tattoo artist (forgot his name, couldn't care less) before we started. He placed the stencil a little to high for where I would've liked, but when I suggested to move it he started rambling some nonsense about how taking too long to set it up will make him want to do it less. UHMMM why would you say something like that to a potential customer?? From the looks of it, they don't treat you well unless you are covered in tats or until they find out you are looking for a $500+ piece and mines was only one bill. I'm still puzzled at myself as to why I even went through with it here, and did I mentioned I tipped?? On top of that, my friends started saying it looked like it was fading... less than 6 months after I got it done! Not coming here for my next one that's for sure, F U fools that work there!!

I would never recommend this place. I guess their name says it all: F U!
I went in with a friend to get his first tattoo, all he wanted was a small chinese character of his last name. The "artist", Ron, was would not trace the tattoo from another friend's back and was rude about the design. He told us "don't worry, when I tattoo this, it will look different."
Tell me Ron, why the hell would you sketch out an example if you are just going to 'wing it'  on the PERMANENT design??
He wanted to add his own style to the design, but its just a chinese name, with his flare, it could end up saying "bung-hole" instead of Chiang.
In the end we walked out because you should never get a tattoo from someone with attitude.

All I have to say is... HUDGE! The man crushes. I was referred to him from a friend who had numerous pieces done by him, all with perfect line work and shading. I've had 2 pieces done by him of 2 of my favorite artists... USUGROW and Mike Giant.

I brought in an USUGROW drawing to have done on the top of my fore arm. Because it didn't really look right symmetrically, he added his own take and added a couple additional rose's with vines it make it look perfect on my arm. the line work was as good as it gets and the shading was perfect... You know its a good piece when people that know his work will stop me in the street and tell me... Nice USUGROW piece! Who did that?

The second was a Mike Giant piece on the inside fore arm. It was a typical Mike Giant lady with a tattoo of a victorian house on her back. When I showed it to Hudge, he was so pumped to do it. (He's a fan of Mike Giant's work... He has an original piece hanging in his station) The victorian house has so much intricate line work and negative space to deal with, I knew some of the detail would have to be left out... but to my surprise, not one line was left out. It is absolutely amazing how intricate this piece is.
I recently was at a Mike Giant function in the city and showed him the piece and he replied... "Fuck! I don't think I could have done a better job!"
    Now that's some shit!

I would recommend all of the artists here.  Most of my inked friends have been worked on by someone at FU, whether it was at FU or not.

Miki has worked on both of my pieces, and they are full of color and I get tons of compliments on them.

I can't wait to get another!!!

Pricing shouldn't be an issue when choosing a shop, remember this is permanent, but I feel this place is affordable for the quality you will receive.

Both of my pieces are original and I absolutely love them.

I wish they were open on Mondays when I'm off, but I guess I would be in big trouble if they were.  ;)

    Mark is the shit.

I don't understand all the bad reviews he's gotten, but he did my art work and it turned out beautifully. I'm lucky my friend got her art done there a little while ago because I got to see the amazing talent of Hudge. When I went there to get my art done, I wasn't too particular about who was going to do it because I've seen all their portfolio and each artist does amazing work. I ended up with Mark, who was totally nice and was able to draw the piece that I wanted to cover up an old tattoo.

I was there for about 4 hours, he only charged me for 3. The coloring and shading he did on my newest addition is phenomenal. I AM coming back to him to get my next tattoo. Definitely don't let the name fool you- or just don't be too sensitive.

My friend and I a while back decided it was time for another tattoo and went researching. we came across FU and went to Santa Cruz to check it out. The guys there were really cool and showed us some binders with their artwork. When we finally decided on what we wanted, we made our appointment with Hudge for a couple weeks (on a Sunday no less). We did have to have a $40 deposit but since we had back to back appointments, he charged us $40 for both instead of each!  Note: they take cash only, so bring it with you.

The day finally arrived and we went with our entourage (okay 2 other people who wanted to watch but still). At first when he showed my what he wanted to do, there was a piece I wasn't fond of but he was super cool and just removed it and showed me the new version. It was so cool to practically have the place to ourselves. They were extremely sanitary and professional. And in the end, it cost me only about $40 (including a tip) for the rest of my tat. They even got extra business when our friend decided to get a piercing. I would definitely go again and get another tattoo from them. Btw, the other pic is what I gave them as an example of what I wanted. The finished result is amazing but you're gonna have to ask to see if you're a friend, lol!

My cousin discovered Hudge when he still worked at True Art. She had gotten in some sort of fight with someone and was pissed. She went for a drive...and ended up in Santa Cruz getting a tattoo from Hudge at True Art. It was a simple enough tattoo but she was super into it.

So, from that point on...for the last six years give or take EVERYONE in my family and all of our friends have slowly started going to Hudge... who is now at FU Tattoo. Literally, myself, my husband, my brother, my cousins, my aunt and uncle, my sisters-in-law and my two best friends...all die hard Hudge fans. All of us get consistent compliments about how great his work is.

Most of the time, like Lisa J. said we roll in as a huge group and several of us get tattooed on one day. We all live in the East Bay and Peninsula. My brother even lives in Chicago! So, it's no easy trek but 100% worth it. Hudge is funny and interesting to chat with while getting tattooed. The shop is great. Fun to hang out in. Usually good music on the loud side. Hilarious stickers to look forward to every time.

He does exceptional floral work, but everything I have seen him do comes out great. That's why we now trust no one else with our ink!

    Good fucking times.

I am SO happy to see so many good reviews - especially for Nick Vargas. My husband and I have known Nick about 7 years now, and he's done 13 tattoos for us (I think... so hard to keep track these days.) We've followed him from Santa Barbara to San Francisco and now to Santa Cruz (and continue to go to him for our tattoos, even though we're living in Seattle now!) Not all tattoo artists are real "artists" in any true sense of the word... but Nick is so talented and has such great vision. And I think the most important asset for any tattoo artist is that he or she is a good listener, which Nick certainly is. He will absolutely give you his honest opinion and expert advice, but he will listen to what you want, and do everything in his power to make your vision translate to a tattoo. Besides being a great tattoo artist, Nick is just a genuinely sweet, laid-back person. He's fun to be around and even though you may be in pain, he makes the experience enjoyable.
I haven't really interacted with the other staff, so I can't say much about them... nor can I say anything about walk-ins, since we always have an appointment when we drive 13 hours to see Nick. The shop is immaculate, they have plenty of parking, and the music is always eclectic enough to keep you interested.
As long as Nick is tattooing, my husband and I will be going to him (and when he retires, we'll just come to visit!)

Nick Vargas is the best tattoo artist--quite possibly in the world! my bf goes to him religiously to touch up his tattoos and to get new ones. my bf's been quite committed to Nick, only going to him for all his tattoo needs. Nick also paints and is quite the artist (the canvas and pastel kind, in addition to the tattoo kind); check out his work on his walls. Nick is just a really nice guy, sharing his love of Freddy Krueger with us and his personal life. he always recommends good places to eat in Santa Cruz and my bf always look forward to seeing him.

FU tattoo's artist Nick has officially opened up the floodgates for me and now I want more tattoos (Well, I already made an appointment 3 weeks ago for a session with Clifton Carter at Tattoo City in SF in late august) because I sort of impulsively made an appointment with Nick last week after my roommate got a tattoo done by him and after watching her get it done, I felt the tingly sensation of envy and wanted one for myself STAT!

I've been toying with the idea of having a gun (oldschool revolver) tattoo somewhere on me for a while now and finally decided having it on the inside of my right forearm. I discussed the design with Nick when I booked my appointment and waited impatiently a week later to come in and get it done.

Atmosphere-wise, F U Tattoo is pretty small, red walls, loud music (they were playing an Iron Maiden cd during my session--wooo!) lots of tattoo binders to look through.

Nick is very cool, friendly and very laid back and fun to talk to (we talked about everything almost). He makes you feel really comfortable (and said if I needed to go get a drink to relax, that's perfectly fine...but I didn't need to) and he knows what he's doing and makes sure you're happy with placement and size because after all, it's gonna be stuck there permanently. I was initially nervous (I admit) before the needle(s) hit my skin because it's been 8 years since I've gotten my first tat but he eased me into it by going over a small area just so I can get the feel for it and once I felt it, it wasn't too bad at all. In fact, I never grimaced once. When it came down the the shading, it felt almost like a massage and during the entire process, I never once broke conversation because it wasn't painful at all (I am aware people have different thresholds for pain and I say "no matter how much it hurts, it's not gonna hurt as much as LIFE"). The only time I broke conversation was to get my phone out of my bag to take pictures of my arm being tattooed away.

In the end, it took about an hour to do it, including set up time--so in actuality, the tattoo itself took less than an hour to do. I was actually sad that it was over so soon.

In the future, I'd like to go back to him and get something else done, but I've already reserved 2 places on my body for pieces that I already plan to do and so I have to give this one more thought but it'll happen.

Also good to know: walk ins are acceptable (my roommate walked in for hers last week) but appointments are of course, recommended and if you decide to make an appointment, there is a $40 deposit and it's CASH ONLY.

I'd seen all the positive Yelp reviews beforehand, but I just couldn't get passed the name (which I got a a cool explanation for). But I came here by recommendation, and the rest is history. All I have to say about that is effin' get past it because the people here are awesome.

It is so great to walk into a shop where everyone is like family. The vibe was so chill and there is definitely a lot to look at. Their portfolios are amazing in attention to detail and color.

When I walked in, Nick was the one to first help me with my second tattoo. Hudge and Miki were busy tattooing away, and I loved all of their work, so I had no problem working with Nick. He is such a gentleman (besides cracking jokes about how old I looked, haha) and helpful. He gave me a price range and I sped to the ATM to get it (which made me realize I don't know East Side SC like I thought I did), while he worked on my sketch.

When I got back he wasn't finished yet (due to my enthusiastic fast driving), so I chilled on the chairs, listening to a crazy random iPod playing (good stuff) and the familiar buzz of a tattoo parlour, while playing Tetris on my phone.

When the sketch was ready, it was everything I had imagined placed on paper, defined and refined. I was really excited now to see it all coming together. As we worked on the placement of the piece, I was getting more nervous as I know that I'm in for a rough spot.

And boy, my knowing is an understatement. This would have been a quick job, but man, I have a crap pain threshold. I was rather audible at some parts. Seriously, for the people who want ribcage tattoos, expect some sensitive spots and loads of vibrating. It felt like my whole body was vibrating, which my internal organs were not happy with. Also, tiny lines feel like a mile long. Okay, I'm over exaggerating a bit, but it definitely feels a lot longer than it really is. It's an intense experience.

    Key: Remember to BREATHE.

I've always had an issue with that (this was my mantra in high school). Don't worry about messing them up, they will tell you when you do move too much (which I didn't, HA!).

It also really helped to focus on one thing. I was looking all over the place and the one thing I found to oddly alleviate my brain paying attention to the needle being dragged through my skin was this painting of a man's head that was all red, and there was a quote on top that read "We are all lost" (or something to do with being lost). Whenever I looked at it, the pain was significantly more tolerable. I toughed it out at the end after realized I kept taking breaks, and thus his time (sorry, Nick! Thanks for putting up with my chicken butt).

At the end of it, actually seeing it in the mirror, finished (which actually didn't take that long after I took it like a champ). I was half waiting for that feeling of elation that I got after my first tattoo, but I think it was curtailed by my being lightheaded (sat up kind of fast after lying down for a good hour or so), my hip being stiff, my leg falling asleep, and the slight need to vomit (which didn't happen). My body was hating me for what I put it through.

The final piece was breathtaking. It's always amazing to see something go from your brain, to paper, to reality. Upon first glance at it in the mirror, I was overwhelmed with a sense of happiness and relief.

I got bandaged up and was on my way. Blood leaking through my tank top freaked me out a bit, but after the initial wash, I realized it wasn't so bad. I took a nap before taking off the bandage. The experience, though so accomplished, was draining as eff. When washing, the soap didn't sting one bit. It was the friggin' lotion. The pain caused the vomit feeling to come back (still didn't, just lied down 'til the feeling passed).

All in all, this was a great experience. Friendly and helpful staff. Talented artists. Typically they work by appointments, but if they have a cancellation or what not, they are cool with walk-ins (like me!). I was for sure in that mood where if I didn't get it right then, I wouldn't get it at all (at least for a long time, which is what happened in the summer when I first conjured up this baby).

Since I got through this tattoo, I know that I will be fine for my back piece I've been saving up for, as this was the ultimate. I can't wait for the thing to completely heal. Pictures when it is!

This review is mostly dedicated to Hudge/Jason, but I guess also to F U Tattoo in its entirety since Hudge works there. My first and probably largest tattoo I will ever get was done by Hudge. He drew up my design within a month after I met with him to discuss what I wanted, and I couldn't have ever imagined something as beautiful as what he drew for me.

He gave me honest advice about the size and placement of my design, and so my original idea of a tattoo about 6 inches grew to cover my whole side. During the break I took during the first 4 hours of tattoing, he offered me to grab a beer or take some shots-definitely calmed my nerves!! He was also great and humored my entourage of 5 or 6 friends that came with me both times to get my piece done.

The parlor itself is your typical tattoo parlor- loud music, intense artwork covering the walls, and of course very clean and inviting! Go to F U Tattoo and at least talk to Hudge if you are considering getting some ink...or check out his portfolio on their website.

I just got my first tattoo at this place today.  Since it was my first, I can't compare it to other places but I din't think I could have asked for anything better.  I was a little off-put by the name at first but had heard good things so decided to try it out.   The artist, Nick, was fantastic.  He was pleasant...even when I had a minor freak out about the needles.  He worked with me and I ended up getting a great tattoo at a very fair price.

It was just a great experience overall, I would recommend them to anyone.

I've gotten three tats here - some dolphins on the small of my back, a ying yang on my shoulder blade and a butterfly on my ankle. They are all really cute and pretty!

    Just kidding!!!!

T"hey triedto tell me that FU stands for "Fun Unlimited", but, knowing the sarcasm of these folks, it surely means "F**k You"! Nevertheless, I wouldn't trust just anyone to create indelible images on my skin. FU Tattoo is most definitely trustworthy and reputable. These guys have been around Santa Cruz for a long time and worked hard at other reputable shops before branching off to create the glorious FU.  Miki M. is an exceptionally awesome artist with a knack for creating amazingly beautiful vibrantly colored stylized work. He's a master at covering up, repairing and camouflaging other artists poor work, as well. I don't even know how to describe Miki's work, but I know it when I see it on people around town because its vibrant and pretty damn as close to perfection as you can get!
If your looking to get a tattoo, support this shop, you won't regret it!
