I'm in the process of getting a piece done by Jason.  He has been receptive to my input and drew up a bitchin' custom design for me.  He knows that I was saving up for my tattoo and worked quickly and efficiently to get my outline done.  He does quality (and award-winning) work.  I did my research before settling on Freaks and Geeks, and I'm glad I did.
He put me at ease and made me feel very comfortable before we started (this is my first big piece).  I've never felt pressured to spend outside my budget or to get more than I want done.
Even when we had to reschedule once he was accommodating and quick to respond.
It's located in the awesome Alberta neighborhood with Anna Bananas conveniently located in the same building.
I highly recommend Freaks and Geeks.  I've told all my friends and family where to go for their next tattoo.
Another perk is that the wait list isn't months-long.  I've had friends that have had to wait for three to four months before starting a piece.  Jason and I got the process started in less than two weeks.

8:20pm on a Saturday, joking about getting a tattoo w/ my friend turned into "Seriously? Wait, for real? OK, let's do this!" and we called Freaks and Geeks to see if they could do two walk-ins. MAJOR PLOT POINT: F&G closes at 8pm. They said to stop by, explain what we wanted, and then come back in an hour after they finished some people. So we did. I mention the closing time because it was hella-rad of them to squeeze us in after they were technically closed and with no advance notice.

I saw Jason, the owner; my friend saw Joel. I think we both had a good experience...just way different experiences. Jason was pretty no-nonsense. He wasn't too chatty - I mean, he wanted to get outta there and enjoy his Saturday night - but seemed to know his shit. The whole experience was quick yet professional. I wish I'd pushed back a little more on the exact word placement, but after making him redraw his original design and knowing he was doing us a favor by squeezing us in after the shop was technically closed, I felt kind of guilty and didn't want to be a dick. On the other hand, tattoos are forever (duh), and I was paying him, after all. (MORAL O' STORY: book tattoo apts in the future. My bad.)

My friend, on the other hand, had a decidedly unhurried experience with Joel (we were there past midnight). He took his time and even let us play our own music and have a dorky dance party while he drew up her lettering. I know it's comparing apples to oranges, but my friend's design was GORGEOUS, and Joel's chill demeanor never made us feel like we were infringing on his weekend. I'm sure under normal circumstances, when you, YOU KNOW, make an appointment and come in during regular operating hours with a realistic idea of what you want, Jason is awesome too. Personally? I think Traci at New Rose still holds the #1 tattoo spot in my heart.

My tattoo artist left Portland and I had to ask around for a new artist.  I heard from quite a few people that Jason was amazing, and the work I saw on my friends was outstanding.  I went into the shop and discussed my plans for a sleeve and some other future ideas and he jumped right in with both feet.  So far, he has drawn up exactly what I wanted, the tattoo at this point is amazing, no scaring, no scabbing, no ink coming out and he does not talk your ear off making you feel like prisoner.  I think I have found the only artist that will be doing my work while I live in Portland.  Not to mention the shop is clean and quaint, the shop assistant is adorable and Jason is extremely professional and reasonably priced.  SOLD!

I was very pleased by the combination of professionalism and friendly service I experienced at Freaks and Geeks.  I was treated with respect, but not in a sterile way.  Rather, my opinions about the tattoo were respected and a good deal of time was spent in the 'consulting' phase - making sure my tattoo was customized exactly how I wanted it.  There was no bullshit salesmanship or attitude.

Jason (the owner) took a great personal interest in my tattoo.  I told him that another client of his recommended that I come in to have a chat.  Jason, being a smart guy who understands that a client recommendation is gold, was invested immediately.  He took notes, asked questions, confirmed his understanding of my wants and needs.  Basically, he made me confident that Freaks and Geeks was a place I would want to have work done.

    Some highlights:

    - The shop is clean, bright and welcoming.  There is a good mix of music playing at a good listening level.  The staff is friendly and banter back and forth quite a bit.  Overall, a very positive vibe.

    - Jason was extremely organized and timely in his reponses and delivery on items we discussed.  Initial tattoo drawings were completed on time, adjustments to preliminary design were completed on time.  Jason answered all my emails within a very reasonable amount of time.

    - An extreme amount of care is taken in keeping work stations to a medical grade of clean.  Everything wiped down, gloves are always worn, needles are removed from packaging and inspected with a magnifying glass.  In watching his movements and how he can easily chat/joke with me, it is clear that this level of care is second nature to Jason- which put me at ease.

    - Jason is very aware of pain levels, impacts of his work on the physiology of his clients, etc.  He employes conversation not only to be friendly, but as a means of distraction from work being done on sensitive areas.  He is comfortable with taking breaks if you need a break or continuing to work if you don't.

    - Most importantly, the quality of the work is fantastic!  Jason continued and completed a piece I had started years ago, but wasn't able to finish prior to my artist leaving the industry.  The piece is seemless, beautiful and far superior to what I had expected.

I know that there is very little chance anyone will read this review and, without knowing me, decide to just head on in to Freaks and Geeks and get some work done.  However, I do hope this review will help influence people to at least check it out.  Great shop, great people and really great work.

Freaks and Geeks is a wonderful, intimate shop to be tattooed in. Jason and Joel are two of the nicest and funniest guys. I am visiting Portland for two weeks and was glad to hear Joel could do some work for me. He came up with a design in no time at all and he worked quickly and efficiently. I'm incredibly happy with how my tattoo turned out. I highly recommend these guys :)

    I recently went here after reading a good review and went in on the trust it was a good spot in a neighborhood I love. I wanted a simple Tattoo and although my artist was really nice she missed the Boat. I was overly outlined with hard black line and it was done poorly. I was in shock. I cried and called back, though she said she would fix it I couldn't bring myself to go back. I took terrible care of it in hopes it would fade enough to cover. I recently paid an owner of a shop to cover it. it  was disappointing they didn't offer my money back or the owner never called and asked if he could fix it..The Moral of the story.. Research research research your local artist or you could end up with something that resembles a torpedo on your arm..:-{

I have been meaning to check out this shop since they opened a few months ago, as it is dangerously close to my house. I walked in last week to check out the artists' portfolios (which were all great!) and was greeted by Jason, the owner, who has to be one of the friendliest tattooers I have ever met.  Lo and behold, lucky me, I had an appointment just a few days later!
Jason is incredibly talented and knowledgeable. His background is in fine art, and it truly shows. His use of color and shading is amazing, and he has a way of expressing his opinion as an artist that I truly respect. After a grueling four hour session, I have a new piece that I am truly proud of (and Jason was a very good sport with my bitching and moaning!)
The shop itself is small and well kept, nice and clean, with a lot of great custom flash on the walls and good lighting. Throughout my session several people popped in to say to Jason, which I thought was a good sign and gave the shop a great sense of community.
I'll definitely be back. Thanks Jason and all the Freaks and Geeks!

Jason Sweet is a talented artist, a great tattooer, and has a character that makes the process of receiving a tattoo enjoyable. His studio is clean and in a great location. His tattoos are bold, colorful, and built-to-last. His portfolio has impressed people from Seattle so much that they make the drive to come see him in Portland. Congrats to Jason for being so kick-ass!

Jason Sweet, owner of Freaks and Geeks, is a first class tattoo artist . I love his use of bold lines and his eye for color. He's done two pieces on me. Both times I gave him an idea of what I wanted, along with some images, and let him know that I wanted his artistic vision incorporated into the finished work. The artwork original artwork Jason rendered did not disappoint! He gave me what I wanted and so much more. I will be getting more work from Freaks and Geeks!
