A San Francisco treasure! Tattooist Shadow Morton, owner and tattoo artist of Painted Monkey has done 4 of my tattoo's now. He is the only one I trust  in this city. Incredibly talented and very reasonable prices. Friendly and cordial as well as very knowledgeable in all tattoo styles. I cannot praise him highly enough!

Shadow is how all tattoo artists should be. He is a great artist and he is very easy to work with. He has done two tattoos now for my wife which have both turned out amazing and she's getting her third from him soon. I went with her for the last one and his demeanor and attention to detail is tops. I can't wait to get my first from him. Keep up the great work.

I e-mailed Shadow a picture of some hyenas and a pendant I had with this cave-painting-esque neo-paganish hyena glyph on it and pretty much said "Hey man, do...um. Something."

This piece is very important to me, as it represents [INSERT A BUNCH OF PERSONAL SPIRATUALISMO ABOUT MY SOBRIETY, DEMONS, CONTROL, ACCEPTING ONE'S MONSTERS AND TAKING BACK POWER] and I wanted to leave much of the design to someone cool. Shadow hit it in one go, was so wonderful about getting ,e in, talked me through some last-minute psychoses I had about adding color and shit, and soon afterward I had a hyena loping up my forearm.

He gives good ink, knows his shit, and provided me with an excellent game plan for another small piece I need touched-up.

I felt totally welcome, at ease and well-provided for in his place, and can only saw awesome things about this awesome artist!

Plus the motherfucker looks GOOD for his age, and white people usually just don't age that well. You go, Shadow!

Perfect combination of extreme talent and excellent personality.  I'm getting my third piece from Shadow right now (a sleeve) and I'm amazed at what he comes up with.  He always puts his own little spin on things, but is very careful to make sure its what you love or better!

I really can't say enough about how awesome he and his work are.  If you value having a trusting relationship with the person placing permanent artwork onto your body, then Shadow is the guy for you.

I'd give him 10 stars if I could!

Shadow is amazing!  He's extremely patient, and VERY detail oriented - which was much needed for my newest piece which is all straight lines - an artist's nightmare!  He was insistent upon making sure that the design was perfect, the placement was perfect, and I was happy.  The space is great, the vibe is superb ... if I was getting another done, I'd not think anyplace else, I'd just call Shadow.

The following is my story entitled "The Little Tattoo That Could."

It was nearly 3 years ago that Shadow first sketched my idea for me. Later that very day I shattered my elbow (the same arm that I was to get tattooed) and had to have major surgery. The whole thing really put a damper on my tattoo hopes, not to mention my life. About a year later I went back because I was finally ready, (or so I thought) but this time I was fresh from vacation and slightly sunburned, making me impossible to work on. Some time after that, the desire was still there, but coming to the realization that I had no job and no money, it just wasn't in the cards for me, yet again.

I've been thinking about the tattoo a lot lately and I finally got around to calling Shadow earlier last week. I found out that he's no longer at Gotham and now has his own private studio. He was able to fit me in for an appointment yesterday and the little tattoo that could started to become a reality. He wasn't sure that he still had my sketch, which is completely understandable since evidently, I am very flaky. I had a feeling he might come across it though, and when I got there, he had indeed found it.

His new space is very clean with lots of natural light, and the key word for me is private. Shadow is a great guy, with equal amounts patience and knowledge. He makes the whole experience so pleasant and will make sure that you are comfortable. He gives very detailed instructions on how to care for your work afterward. I don't recall having an experience anywhere close to this when I got my first one at some random shop in San Diego.

Shadow is an artist who genuinely cares about his clients and what he does. He is not hasty and will not just rush into something merely to get it done and make money. He wants to make sure that he does it right and that it is right for you.

Although it took me forever to finally get my simple little tattoo, I'm so happy that I did and am very satisfied with it. I've grown up some in the past few years and the thought of having it on my wrist was no longer appealing, opting instead to place it a bit higher on my arm. I guess the timing worked out for the best.

The moral of my story is go see Shadow!

    The End.
