The owner is extremely rude and makes you uncomfortable about asking questions. He answers in a way that makes you feel stupid, and only shows a hint of friendliness after you have handed him your money and started heading for the door.
I got my first holes done here about a year ago and there were no problems, so I went back recently for the second holes. He marked the spots on my ear and asked me to look in the mirror. I did, then asked him for confirmation that the holes were in the right spots because I couldn't really tell. In this absolutely disinterested voice, he said all ears were different and that he had tailored the positions specifically for mine. It was only after I went home that I realized my right ear looked absolutely ridiculous. The piercing was too close to my first hole, and I had to take it out and let it close.
My second hole closed up, but with scarring. Now I can forever remember the mediocre, unpleasant service I received, and the fact that I was cheap enough to go there. It's high-quality needles for me and actual professionals who give a shit from now on. Screw these dingy corridors in Flushing.
He gets two stars because the first holes didn't suck.
The jewelry is reasonably priced, and the apprentice is friendly and helpful. As for Sam himself, he is, as one reviewer said, "kind of a jerk." I don't know how this place has such good reviews - Sam was rude and didn't want to even tell me the details of how to care for my piercing until he was sure I paid. The claim that "no one has ever gotten an infection," is absolutely ludicrous for a few reasons  - my boyfriend got a piercing there which got infected, and it's impossible to prove that with all the people he's pierced (probably tricked into going from these reviews). Not that it's Sam's fault, but to claim such a thing is so stupid that it's almost funny. A place I would definitely not come back to for any other piercings.
Review Source:This dude's really rude and impatient. He doesn't take kindly to basic questions, and makes you feel as if you're stupid for asking them in the first place.. I came here to get cartilage piercings, and had the nastiest, most painful infection of my life. Black pus spewed out when I finally took off the piercings due to the unbearable pain.
AVOID HERE AT ALL COSTS!
BEWARE!
I am absolutely fed up with Silver Image
I've gotten a number of piercings done from Sam
Recently I got my snake eyes done here.
Snake eyes are not an easy piercing and I warned him beforehand that I had gotten it done before and it went terribly wrong because the piercer put a bar that was too small
He confidently told me that if I listened to his instructions nothing would go wrong.
He messed up the first time and I had to be pierced twice (ouch) The second time he was trying to put the ball on and was clearly having some difficulty. He yelled "shit" a few times (very professional) and then finally managed to get it on. The piercing was a bit crooked, but I couldn't deal with the pain of getting it redone a third time so I just decide to live with it. Right after, the piercing looked fine and everything. I sucked on ice just like he told me to.
I followed all of his rules and avoided hard foods, processed foods, used listerine after eating anything, etc. The next day my tongue swelled up and the bar was feeling tight and uncomfortable. I assumed that it would get better if I just gave it some time. The day after that the area around the balls were red and looked extremely irritated. The area was bleeding and I could taste blood in my mouth.
I could barely eat anything because of the pain, so I went back that day to ask him to replace my bar with a longer one. (I've done this at other piercing places before and the piercer would gladly change the jewelry for me free of charge). I came all the way from manhattan and all I got from Sam was a big attitude.
He insisted that it was normal and part of the healing process. Actually, he yelled it at me. I explained to him that I had gotten a fair share of piercings before and this looked far from normal. He asked if I had been sucking on ice and very rudely said "imagine if you didn't?"
I told him "this doesnt look normal"
"everyone heals differently, WHAT are you from mars or something you're not human?"
..Rude.
He told he that tongue piercings take a week or two to heal and that I should wait that long. I said "fine, i'll wait a week and if it still looks like this I'll come back" and furiously walked out. I was determined to keep it in there a week and then demand my money back.
The same day at night, I woke up in pain and found my tongue profusely bleeding so I was forced to take it out. There are still two purple bumps on my tongue where the piercing was.
It seems sam is just obsessed with his reputation and does not know when to admit that he is wrong and gets very angry and mean when you try to challenge that.
Silver Image is okay for ear piercings and small stuff like that, but for difficult piercings STAY AWAY.
His prices are not that great either.
I'm sorry to say that Sam was kind of a jerk. Â Enticed by the glowing reviews, I went in to look for titanium captive bead rings (for existing piercings) and was prepared to get another piercing here if I liked the place. But I was met with nothing but 'tude. Â
Me: Do you carry titanium jewelry?
Sam: What, belly ring?
Me: No, just a standard bead ring. Â
Sam: What KIND. What's the PIERCING. I have to know what KIND!
Me: For a regular piercing, like this. (I show him my cartilage piercing. Isn't it understood that a CBR is the default piercing jewelry?)
Sam: (Rolls his eyes angrily and pulls out a piece of cardboard with baggies of CBR's pinned onto it)
Me: Oh, are all those titanium?
Sam, in a tone of voice like I'm a child who is sticking her hands in the cookie jar: No, they are not all titanium! Only this, this, and this!
So, they have literally 3 kinds of titanium bead rings in the entire shop, none of which were the size I needed.
Me, preparing to leave: OK, thanks. (They say something to try to get me to purchase, so I explain:) I was looking for titanium because I have a nickel allergy and can't wear steel. Â
At this point, Sam says something about how he's such a great piercer that I wouldn't get an allergic reaction or infection, and makes a remark about how the piercers in the booth toward the front don't wash their hands.
.....Most piercing places would advertise their cleanliness this way:
1. We use disposable needles!
2. We autoclave all the jewelry before it goes into your body!
3. We use latex gloves!
...Not "I wash my hands."
Beyond that, I get a rash if I have steel on my skin. Â Period. I'm not interested in chancing an allergic reaction. It doesn't make sense why anyone, a "piercer" no less, would declare that someone WON'T have an allergic reaction when they've just told you that they BIOLOGICALLY WILL.
?!?!!
Anyway. This is not a piercing studio. They sell body jewelry in the middle of a cramped mall (think Hong Kong). If you want something pierced, it kind of looks like you just lean over the counter while the guys behind the counter dab at you with an alcohol wipe and stick a needle in your face.
I'm sure he checks ID and all, but this booth still has the vibe of a place that high school kids undergoing identity crises would go for a rebellious hole in the tongue or belly. Â I'm sure they have a private area for "intimate" piercings but I can't imagine anyone would come here for those, considering how nasty and opposite of "welcoming" Sam was.
Despite being in Flushing, their pricing is the same as Whatever Tattoo on St. Mark's: $30 for most popular needle piercings, and $5 for piercings with a gun. (A cartilage piercing will run you $25 at Whatever Tattoo and $45-60 at fancier places.) I'm surprised someone who runs a piercing salon would use a gun on cartilage - this is NOT seen as good piercing practice. Google why.
Even if I had found the jewelry I'd wanted, is it worth coming here to get a hole in your body by someone who is rude and condescending and has dubious ideas about how hygiene works?
You can do better.
Finally made it to Sam's today after several Emails and messages that started in the winter. Sam was very patient and knowledgeable, answering all our questions and putting my mind at ease! Very reasonably priced and experienced, one can't go wrong here!
Highly recommended for all of Silver Image's services and products!
I got my nose pierced there earlier this year and it was an ok experience. He was rude and intimidating at first but got friendlier as we got working. I also hated how rough he was. The only reason i give him a 4 is because i yanked out my piercing by mistake and they were very nice about letting me in the next day so he could put back in (i put in a normal earring to keep it from closing) but again he wasn't the nicest guy.
Review Source:Since my first piercing 10 years ago, you'll still find me here several times a year gift-shopping. Why, when I was a wee bit high school student that defined coolness with the # of piercings on my body (ok, just the ears), I went on a rampage with 5 all on the left side (4 on the lobe, 1 on cartilage), and they're all still here~ Sam's piercing skills is quick, painless, clean, and need I mention cheap?
Thru-out the course of these 10 years, my "rebellious" phase has subsided, which leaves me coming here many times a year to pick up personalized and unique birthday & holiday gifts. I've gotten chains & dog tags for the boys, bracelets & rings for the girls, (earrings for myself, heh heh) and my personal favorite has got to be the engravables!
So there's your usual round or flat silver rings, which you can engrave the inner circle of (I believe purchase comes with 1 free name/word/date, and additional words costs so on). Then they have the outer circle engraving (think Lord of the Rings - the one ring to rule them all), then there's the "entire word chiseled onto the ring band" method which means if you punch someone in the face, they're gonna get an imprint of whatever's on your ring. I love gifting those as clique totems; and when my bunny passed away, I buried my name ring with it, and went to get a new one that sports my bunny's name which I wear in its memory.
On a good day, you can place your order and pick up within hours. So go shop around Flushing, grab some Kung Fu Tea next door, then come back and get ready to smile at the sight of your blinging new goodie. Their silver also does not tarnish (or takes A LOT to tarnish), and if you want to restore its shine and smoothness, just bring it back for some dip & buffer.
