I got my first tattoo here by a guy named J. I was getting a medium sized piece on my back and since it was an original sketch made by my sister it had a lot of sentimental value so, obviously, I really wanted it to look nice. There was quite a bit of detail so he suggested we outline it first in black which I wasn't ecstatic about but I trusted his experience.
He made sure to sanitize everything in front of me, which was reassuring and he went into detail about what getting a tattoo is like so I was prepared. He was gentle and considerate, asking if I needed any breaks and it really didn't hurt at all. He even played a dvd to distract me :)
I went back again to have the color done and was disappointed. He didn't remember me at all and didn't seem to care. He said that my skin tone was strange (I'm white, not sure if that matters) and because of that the colors had to be done differently. He seemed impatient to get the work done quickly and as a result the red on my tattoo (which I thought was blood initially) just looks like two dots instead of lines. I was happy with the blues and greens but I feel like it could have been more vibrant for sure.
Things may have changed, I haven't been back since but all together I felt like he didn't love his job or his work and I didn't leave enthusiastic about the piece he did. As a result, I'm getting it redone this year at Diamonds in Renton.
Good points: Clean and affordable (touch ups at no charge)
I went in one night on a whim with a friend who was moving away, we just wanted to get a small piece each done. The experience was awkward. The artist who tattooed my friend was some what friendly, but professional. However, the artist who tatt'd me wasn't as welcoming. I think his name was Robin, but I'm not sure cause he barely spoke to me. Â I got a small tattoo on my forearm, it was not my first tat but by far the most painful. I have had several tats in places that could be considered more painful then most but this dude was diggin the needle in my arm so hard I wanted to just get up and walk out. The shading is terrible and I noticed it right away. The outline is quite a bit thicker than we discussed. Its been about 7 weeks and I still am debating whether to get it covered up or try to get it salvaged by another artist, as the scar tissue is pretty bad. I think that this artist was fairly new but didn't put that together till after the fact. That would have been helpfult to know from the get go. I won't be coming here again.
Review Source:I should start out by saying they havent done my tat yet. Ive just been in the shop alot so I felt like giving them a review.
So yeah enough time on this planet and no tats yet! Back home theres not alot of places so now that I'm out here I started to think yah about time! Ive now been to this place three times and heres the deal, there nice! Ive seen there books and they will talk as long as you want. They talked to me about my idea forever without me paying a dime for nothing yet. Thats service!
When I do get my first tat this will be the place. Taking out the worry is pretty darn nice.
I went in for a cover up tattoo. The artist available named Tor drew what my idea would look like on my arm. After seeing it I asked him if he had any books I could look at to get another idea. He was very helpful and brought be several books to look through. After I chose something to use as the cover up we went to work.
Tor was very excited about the design and the way it started to look. Which in turn got me more excited and happy with my choice. After a couple of hours the tattoo was on and I have 1 more session to complete it.
For those wondering the place was clean the people were awesome. The businesses around the area were awesome as well. I hope to have a lot of work done there for the rest of the year. I'd suggest if you don't want to get all the way up to Seattle and you live close to this place, go and talk and get to know the guys they are very friendly and helpful in ways many other tattoo places are not.
I've been going to Ancient Arts to get tattooed by Kevin for quite a while, I think over a year now. Both my partner and I are working with him on some large pieces. I confess, I knew Kevin before both he & I moved here, so I got lucky there. I haven't had any work by any of the other guys in the shop, and the piercing business is at least temporarily closed, FYI.
Here's what I have to say about the shop. Overall, I like it. It is busy, with lots of street traffic. Three artists are available to tattoo, but their schedules vary. I see a mix of people getting appointments on the same day and people scheduling for later appointments when I'm there. The artists are nice people, they've always been respectful of me and my space when getting work done. The only downer is that there's no front desk, so the artists are continually interacting with people who walk in while they're working on you. They do share the responsibility, so it's not too distracting. I've enjoyed the atmosphere, it seems to work for both/all genders. And Kevin's work is fabulous, of course! But I am biased.
The shop is street level but I don't know if you could get a wheelchair back into the stalls where the artists work.
