I have had two tattoos done here by Mike Lucena. I first connected with him for a piece of scripture on my leg. I heard he was the best for script, and he did not disappoint. The first tattoo is on my right thigh, from my hip, to about 2 inches above my knee. It took two sessions, around 3 hours each.  I could not have been happier with the result. My  script looks great, and it healed very nicely.  I got my second tattoo done here a few weeks ago with my fiance. I absolutely love it, and the colors are bright and vibrant.
This is not a cheap tattoo shop. A tattoo is with you for life, Paying  top dollar for your tattoo is worth it, and Mike is worth every penny.
I got my sleeve done by Mike Lucena at Flyrite. Â He's the man. Â I probably had a total of 8 appointments because he worked on a huge piece of mine. Â My sleeve is all black and grey, and Mike did a great job. Â He was meticulous, and asked me how I was doing every time I would flinch. Â
The sleeve turned out awesome. Â I get compliments all the time. He was also a pleasure to work with and fun to chat with. Â He also fixed the tattoos I have on my knuckles during my sleeve appointment because I kept complaining about the crappy job some other artist did at a different shop.
I would definitely go back to Mike again!
Just got a tattoo today from Mike. It was a walk-in and he was able to do my tattoo right away. He's a pretty cool guy, laid back and funny. I was considering getting a complete white ink tattoo but he dissuaded me saying it wouldn't look the way I expect. So it's only partially white ink but i definitely like it anyways. He did a great job and hopefully when it heals completely it looks even more awesome. The price was a big hefty for the simplicity and small size of the tattoo but if you don't mind dropping some mullah on a tattoo you really want, I definitely recommend this place.
Review Source:My poor rating is mainly due to the artist, rather than the shop itself. I looked at the work in the shop and online and was told good things about Flyrite, so I decided to make an appointment. First off, this place is CASH ONLY, which wasn't too convenient, as the ATM at the diner down the street gave me 3 surcharges in all to obtain the cash for the deposit/tattoo itself. That aside, the artist I booked my appointment with was a few days away from moving to California, and wasn't concerned at all with gaining loyal customers in NYC apparently. He did not introduce himself, and was pretty much silent the entire time he tattooed me. I honestly don't care too much about him being impolite, but the biggest problem was his failure to produce a tattoo that I was happy with. My idea was very simple, and he would not listen to the things I wanted changed. The icing on the cake was that he over charged the hell out of me, not because I was rude to him, but simply because he knew he wouldn't be seeing me again (because he was moving). Bad karma for him. Long story short, Flyrite has a slew of great tattoo artists, I simply picked the worst one to tattoo me. Now i paid WAY too much money for a tattoo that I am not happy with, which is partly my fault for not doing enough research but mainly the artists fault for blowing it and not giving a shit. Cheap tattoos arent good, and good tattoos arent cheap, but bad tattoos that arent cheap....thats just fucked up. I will not be going back to Flyrite.
Review Source:For my first tattoo, I chose this spot because of the good reviews and I felt like it would be less pretentious than tge tattoo shops in the city, especially since I was such a newb.
The receptionist was helpful in letting me know I can walk in anytime to talk to any of the tattoo artists for a consultation. I had a very specific idea of what I wanted: a phrase in script on my back.
1st visit: I spoke to Jeb about what I wanted and he asked me about location/size/script style/color. I also wanted to give him some freedom as the artist to play with the lettering. Put down a deposit.
2nd visit: Saw the sketch and it was EXACTLY what I had wanted, if not even nicer. Made appointment to come back to get it done.
3rd visit: Jeb was patient because he had to place the tracing of the tattoo on my back about 4 times before I was happy with the placement. He got me a pillow to lay on my side. The entire process was 1 1/2 hr. After he was finished, he covered it up and gave me a sheet of instructions on how to care for it.
4 months after: My tattoo has healed beautifully and after following the instructions (especially applying sunblock on it during beach vacations), the lettering is still crisp and clear and dark. No irritation, no bumps, no bleeding of the ink.
I was very happy with the entire process and final product. But for my next tattoo, I would be more selective in picking an artist who specializes in what I want, especially if it was a graphic.
Granted it was my first tattoo and the only shop I've been to, it was a great time, every time. I had a full back piece done by Steven Huie and have nothing but praise for his work. The man is an artist and a true professional. Not only will he listen to your ideas/opinions, but he will put forth his own.
The rest of the staff is great as well. Friendly and welcoming.
The spot itself is well-kept and clean. I nice reminder the week before your appointment (I'm extremely forgetful) and you can even call and they'll be happy to oblige to your inquiries.
I will be back for my next epic piece...
Let me say up front that I don't normally post bad reviews on Yelp (only in the most egregious circumstances), but because tattoos are a big deal for the person getting one, I have to post a warning about Flyrite here.
Let me also say that any of the following aspects of my experience, on their own, would not have let me to post a bad review. Ultimately, if my tattoo had turned out to be high-quality, I'd have let it all go. But I'm really disappointed with what I ended up with, and in retrospect, all the elements really added up to a negative experience that would prevent me from going back and from recommending Flyrite to anyone else.
The set-up: My friend was in town visiting for the weekend. We'd been talking about getting matching tattoos (an image from our favorite movie) for a long time. It was a pretty simple design, and we didn't want to do a whole lot of planning ahead of time, so we went to Flyrite since we knew they take walk-ins. When we got there, the receptionist was very nice and professional, asked us about our design idea and then said she'd find someone who could do it for us that day. She found an artist in the back who was free in an hour and we were all set. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there.
The artist never came out to the front to talk to us about our design, so basically we had to rely on however the receptionist explained it to him. When he came out to show us his drawing, it looked alright, but was lacking some of the key details (for example, the main element of the image was a bee, which the artist had drawn as a bird - dunno how you mix that up unless you hardly paid attention to the original design...) We pointed out a few of the tweaks we wanted, which required going back to the original photo. Unfortunately, *someone* had already crumpled up the image we brought and thrown it in the trash.
(You might be wondering why I haven't mentioned the artist by name at this point -- that's because he never told it to us. No introduction, no handshake. In retrospect maybe that was a smart strategic choice, as now I can't tell anyone which artist to avoid...)
Before he started the tattoo, the artist was having a little trouble with his machine. He realized the one he had was broken, so he had to get a different one. He mentioned it to the receptionist, who said something like, "oh yeah, there's a bad one around here, everyone keeps moving it to someone else's station." Pretty funny, guys, unless you happen to be the client who hears it's about to be used on you...
When it came time to start inking, things seemed ok. Even though I have several tattoos on my upper body, I'd never gotten one on my ankle before, so I wasn't prepared for my leg to be twitchy under the needle. Unfortunately, neither was the tattoo artist. He didn't hold my leg down to stabilize it, which led to the needle jumping quite a bit while he was doing the tattoo. At one point he snapped at me for this -- I'm not sure how I could have helped the nerves in my leg responding to a needle poking under the skin a thousand times. My bad I guess.
While he was doing the tattoo a friend came through the shop and stopped to chat. I get that maybe that's part of tattoo shop culture, but it feels unprofessional to me. Like, I didn't invite this random dude to come stand over me while I lie on a table... can you schedule your chat for later? Maybe it would have been different if I was confident enough in my guy's skills to know he wouldn't be distracted, but I didn't really have anything to reassure me on that point.
When the tattoo was finished and I checked it out, it looked alright enough. He pointed out that there were a few fucked up spots, but that was because I had moved my leg while he was tattooing. Hey, I'm willing to accept that, and a couple little mistakes on an ankle tattoo is no big deal to me. All part of the charm. But it's 2 weeks later now and my tat is healed, and it's not just a couple little mistakes. The line weight isn't consistent, there are blotchy starts and stops in the lines, and some of the black filled in areas look like they were done by a kid with a marker who had a leeeettle trouble staying inside the lines. And this is all on a tattoo that's about 2 inches big and not very complex. I could see being ok with it if I got it for free from an apprentice or something, but not for $120. (My friend got his on his arm - I only hope his looks better than mine since it's in a more visible spot!)
I'm sure there are great, seasoned artists at Flyrite. But I shouldn't have to pay the shop minimum at a decent shop for a substandard tattoo. An unprofessional tattoo experience is one thing, but an unprofessional experience that results in an unprofessional looking tattoo is another. I would never spend my money here again!
I'll be going back to Saved around the block, thanks.
I went to Flyrite because of all the the great reviews. I was unsure of which tattoo artist to choose because I have dark skin and really wanted to get color. I wanted to talk to someone who had experience with dark skin; someone who would give me an honest opinion. I talked to Jordan who was manning the desk at the time and she directed me to Fernando. Fernando was really great and patient with me. It took a couple of runs but we finally decided on a perfect stencil and decided black was best for the type of tattoo. The process went smoothly from beginning to end and if I need another tattoo in the future I'll look up Flyrite! (I posted the picture under Flyrite; it's the caduceus/ staff of Hermes.)
Review Source:I really only took a star off because I had to wait for a while (a full hour), even though I had made an appointment a week in advance. It was a tad frustrating, but the gentleman at the front desk was very apologetic, as was Jeb.
Having said that, it was well worth the wait. Jeb did an INCREDIBLE tattoo for me, and it exceeded my expectations by leaps and bounds. In addition to the absolutely remarkable work he did for me, he was a pleasure to chat with for almost 3 hours. He was patient when I started to get tender and needed a little break, AND he gave me a slice of pizza!
I would absolutely visit Flyrite and Jeb again.
after calling to see if i could be squeezed for the day, I took a 40 minute trip from Harlem to Williamsburg to get tatted. Once I get there, the girl at the front desk had a really nasty attitude and made it seems like i was lying about calling before i got there. She told me that it was too late! -___- what a waste of fucking time!! NOT going back there again.
Review Source:I have gotten all four of my tattoos done by the artists at Fly Rite and I have never had a bad experience. They have all been very clean, professional and friendly. The studio is very convenitenly located to the "L" train Lorimer stop station. Â I will be going back for a fifth one to celebrate my new life as a married woman very soon. :) HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Review Source:How do you celebrate the birth of your first god daughter...you get her name tattooed on your chest.
After reading the yelp reviews for Flyrite, I made the trip to Brooklyn this afternoon to get a new tat listing the names of my nieces and nephew over my heart. The shop is ultra clean and Fernando is a talented artist that helped me refine my idea into a design that looks really good. I don't need any more tats for now, but if I decide that I do at a later date, I'll head back.
Important to note that they only take cash and walk ins are welcome.
Initially when I first came in, I was not impressed. For one, no one seemed to be manning the counter or paying any attention to new customers coming in. We stood at the counter for a good 10 minutes before anyone cared to talk to us. The clerk at the front seemed a bit overwhelmed and apathetic at the same time.
While we were waiting patiently, a man comes from the back and walks toward the counter. He greets us and is extremely friendly. I got a good vibe from him. And with things like body art, it is important to feel a good vibe. I told him what I wanted, and he immediately said it was no problem. In fact, he was also working on a similar symbol for another client. We agreed to an appointment for the next day.
The next day arrives and we show up as soon as they open. It did take awhile before my appointment actually got started, but I am OK with that. This isn't a dentist's office.
All I can say is Jeb Maykut is awesome, artistic, warm and professional. Jeb made sure to tell me that he was a licensed body artist and also that the store met all regulations for body art, which includes an infection control course and a licensing exam. He also made me feel right at home. It was extremely comfortable to work with Jeb and the 2 hours flew by. He was extremly considerate to his clients and asked what music they wanted to listen to while he did his work. I was OK with anything, but he put on Ladytron. Score! He even gave me a nice discount. This was a birthday present to myself. Jeb also offered touch-up for free once everything healed.
I also learned that Jeb likes to do Japanese art design with a mystical twist. We chatted extensively about his interests and he wants to go to Japan to study with a body artist there.
Please check out his artwork:

A clean and fun studio that is professional and at the same time friendly and serious about their work. Only in Brooklyn baby, only in Brooklyn.
I have never been in a friendlier or more professional shop. Â And believe me I've been in a few.
Every artist is amazing - but my personal preference is to go with Marina. Â
She's a master wielding a tattoo gun ! Â
She's quick and "light handed" ~ plus she's super sweet. Â
I am so glad that I chose this shop & artist that I'm waiting impatiently for my next sitting with her this Wednesday.
Love this place. Everyone's ridiculously talented and cool (super nice, even to a square like me!).
I've gone to Steven about 3 times and he is the absolute best. He knows his shit and turned my silly, disparate ideas into a sweet half-sleeve. I've sat for him for about 9.5 hours and every time we get started I feel comfortable and know that he's got it under control. He'd give me updates along the way and was pretty frackin' funny, too!
Of course, whenever I leave I immediately start thinking about my next tattoo. Now if only the elbow area didn't hurt so damn much...
So, what can I really say that hasn't been said about this place before? That it's great?
I've been coming to Flyrite for three years now, and each time I see a really cool shop, in a great location, get even better. The shop is now under the helm of Steven Huie, and under his wing the shop looks even more inviting than ever. (I really dig the custom saloon doors) Well, you already know the tattoos that come out of here look great, and that the artists are friendly, and professional. They work quickly, precisely, and make the experience worth the needle.
A great tattoo is about the total experience, not just the final art. And I can't think of a better place to share something so personal with...
Although the prices have went up here and has caused me to stay away it still does not change how great this place is. Clean, detail driven and super friendly. Came here twice left here with two tattoos :) love them both. Was planing on getting a sleeve next but like I said I'm not sure I'm ready for that price, perhaps when it goes back down to $50 as a starting price. If your a st. Marks kinda person stop what your doing and come here idc how expensive this place gets it's not worth stepping foot into a st.marks tattoo parlor.
Review Source:If this placed served food, I would eat there all day every day. Â But they don't serve food because they are a tattoo shop....don't be an idiot.
Anyways, I was snooping around Brooklyn, asking some questions to all the right people, if you know what I mean, and word on the street was, "flyrite is pretty good." Â But I didn't get to where I'm at by just taking people's word for it. Â I like to learn my own lessons because I'm my own man no matter what Jenna at the starbucks tells you. Â
So I went to flyrite last night and talked to a hirsute man named Mike. Â I said to Mike I said, "hey mike...we got an appointment at 6pm for an our of inking...but it may take longer than that...like two hours longer than that." Â Mike says to me he says, "No problem ::insert my name here::...I like to work." Â Then he gave me the most bitchin' Shel Silverstein tattoo you have ever seen in your stupid life. Â
The whole time he was tatting me up, He told some bad ass stories about his life on the road.  It was just like that scene in  the expendables when Mickey Rourke starts doing some work on Sly's character and then he goes into that really sad monologue about that little girl in Hanoi.  Oh man, I just remember that part where Jett Li axe kicks that dude in is face and breaks the guys head off.  And then that part where that one guy says Knives are better than bullets?  totally badass! Â
I need to watch that movie again.
so apparently, due to an injury, mike drexler no longer works at flyrite. Â this was really upsetting to me when i found out, as i had an appointment for my third tattoo with him last year -- however, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Â
i was given the chance to reschedule with marina, who turned out to be exactly the artist i was looking for to do a cameo brooch-style piece with a traditional lady head. Â not only did her work kick ass, but she actually hurt a lot less than the other artists i've been to (if that's even possible). Â she was really friendly and was extremely conscious of my comfort level the whole time.
this shop has never disappointed me and i've since referred it to several of my friends looking to get more tattoos. Â i'm holding off on getting another one for now but when i finally do, there's no doubt i'll be going back to flyrite.
UGH. So much attitude. I was willing to make the trek to Williamsburg because there were so many good reviews, but after the attitude and sky-high prices of Flyrite (f*ck them) and other shops, I was so glad to find someplace else that was willing to work with my vision. This place had hardly any appointments available, and so I trekked out to put down the required $80 deposit (they charge $180 an hour, which deposit goes towards).... but the artist she recommended wasn't available til Jan. When I showed my drawing she looked at me like crazy and didn't even seem remotely interested in trying to understand where I was going with it. Then she showed me books with "traditional" tattoos I would never get. Snobbery!!! I ended up going to Third Eye Tattoo in Park Slope -- they were awesome.
Review Source:Got a pretty simple tattoo (circle around my lower arm--a pain in the ass for any tattoo artist to do) that took about an hour and a half, and Jeb was friggin' amazing. He was so professional, fun, and was determined to do an awesome job, at which he succeeded. I will definitely go back here for my next tattoo!
One note: cash only!
Came here for my first tattoo. Chose my wrist despite hearing people say how it's one of the more sensitive places because I knew 1) my tattoo would be quick & on the small side and 2) I wanted it where I can look at it every day since it was really a reminder to myself and I want never to forget it...but could also be hid with jewelry.
I had a great experience! Very friendly, down to earth people who seem to be doing it because they genuinely love to do it. I can't express how much I envy that! I got assigned to Jeb Maycut who did a great job of engaging me in conversation to ease my nervousness and bear through the pain. He was covered in tattoos, well from what I could see, so I knew I was in good hands. We got to chat about Lisbon, Portugal and honestly I couldn't even tell you what else because half of my mind was trying to cope with the pain and the other half of my mind was spitting out words in possibly the wrong order. I thought it was fitting considering how much Lisbon was a life changing time for me.
My thoughts...
Did it hurt? F@*# ya. I know I have sensitive skin and not the best pain tolerance but it hurt more than I thought. However, it was not unbearable or excrutiating.
Do I regret it? Not at all. Maybe 10, 20, 30 years from now, if I'm still alive, who really knows. But I DO know that if I did NOT get it done, I would definitely have regretted it. When the opportunity presents itself, you just gotta leap.
Am I happy? Absolutely. It looks gorgeous. I'm sure it was simple for Jeb but I'm amazed at tattoo artists abilities.
Will I get another tattoo? Possibly. But I need to let the memory of this pain subside first...
All in all had a great experience, some laughs, some pain and a great tattoo that means so much to me...what more can you ask for, really?
I just got my first tattoo (a pretty ambitious endeavor) at Flyrite with Mike Lucena. I got a decent sized, very detailed sugar skull on my side ribcage. Mike was a little hesitant at first because of the location since it was my first tattoo, but I ended up having a high threshold for pain (and painful it was).
The studio is very clean and in a great location. However, I think I put too much emphasis on the "experience" of getting my first tattoo and not enough on the actual process. I was a little intimidated because I didn't have a specific design in mind, just a concept, when I first showed up. After a few trips back to the drawing board, Mike suggested I go back and design it myself. That made me a little nervous. But I'd put a deposit down, and didn't want to lose my money.
After picking out a specific design I went back and Mike helped me get it just right. He was super professional, and ended up doing an AMAZING job, I can't stress that enough. He was SUPER quick (only an hour) and his detail was immaculate. But since I had some trouble getting the design just right, I wish I'd been a little more vocal about what I wanted (in terms of shading).
My advice to others would be to speak up at all stages of the process, and don't be intimidated. But I love the end result, and would definitely suggest Mike if you have a very specific design in mind.
STEVEN HUIE, STEVEN HUIE, STEVEN HUIE!!!

It is inevitable that I relate life decisions and experiences to mathematical formulas and completely unaware of it at times, can be quite a distraction. However, I've come to terms and accepted that about myself. Yes, I am in finance and tattoos? Yes I know, in my mind that involves, and very much related to risk.
Hmmm..Let's relate getting a tattoo to statistical risk for example (I will just go through this briefly). This involves:
A- probability of an undesirable event - receiving a bad tattoo
B- Assess the expected harm and combined with desirable scenario - I can consult with the tattoo artist thoroughly, probe until we have agreed on the desired outcome. Speak on how to care for the tattoo.etc. I don't want to bore you...
Despite all this, did I still want a tattoo? The answer is YES. I will take the risk. Besides, the most successful people in the world are known to be risk takers.
Moving on..I've come to Flyrite with the help of other Yelpers. I already have a tattoo I wanted to add to. It symbolized a very deep experience in my life that I did not want to resurrect, but celebrate because it made me who I am today. Steven Huie fit more of the style I was searching for and the wait was approximately a month and a week. I was persistent like a motherfucker and lucky enough to take a canceled appointment by one of his clients.
I allowed him to practice his creativity and he was extremely patient with me regarding the tattoo configuration, colors and he created a masterpiece on my shoulder. Steven is a GENIUS. He was also chill and relaxed - got him on a good day after some acupuncture. It was a long and painful process with those needles and I am glad Flyrite was clean, and with sterilized needles of course. (See photos of my experience)
So what was all this talk about risk you ask? With Steven Huie there were no risks calculated in my mathematical mind. The only risk is the decision to get the tattoo that you really want.
So go for it already!
finally got my second tattoo done about a month ago. and i got nick caruso again.
no complaints here. he is the best, quickest and still pays attention to every single detail. he fit me in the same day when he didn't have to. he dropped the original price because he shrank the design. he's super friendly.
again i TOTALLY recommend nick. he's amazing.
went back to Mike Lucena for my 2nd tattoo, and he was awesome, as always. I wanted it on my ribs and at first he wasn't going to agree to it because he thought it was my first tattoo, but when I told him he did my other one and he remembered, he agreed to it. It says a lot that he was more concerned about me being able to handle the pain than him making money! He works extremely fast! Will be going back to him again this year
Review Source:After two of my friends got their tattoos at Flyrite, I decided to trek out to Williamsburg for mine, despite the conveniently located tattoo parlor practically across the street from my apartment. I'd gone with my friend Lauren S. to get her tattoo at Flyrite, and was extremely impressed with their professionalism, cleanliness, and friendliness.
My experience was no different. I went in to make an appointment and pay my deposit (unfortunately, they won't make appointments over the phone). I REALLY needed a Saturday appointment (this was on a Thursday) because a friend of mine was coming in from out of town to be with me when I got my tattoo. The girl told me there was nothing on Saturday, but I begged her, and finally she squeezed me in, which was really cool. Came back Saturday, and told Marina which font I wanted (I was just getting three words tattooed on my leg). She quickly drew up the stencil and went to work.
The tattoo took no more than 8 minutes. I was shocked! I was expecting much longer. Marina worked very fast and very beautifully. My tattoo came out perfectly, exactly like I wanted it.
It hurt quite a bit while getting it, but I admit I have a pretty low tolerance for pain. However, the healing process was such a breeze! I followed the simple instructions provided, and I never had any problems whatsoever. In fact, my tattoo never even really raised up. No scabbing, no peeling, nothing. It's now settled into the skin perfectly and looks wonderful. I'd definitely come back in the future should I decide to get another tattoo.
I absolutely loved this place.  I got my first tattoo on Saturday from Mike Lucena, who was really friendly, funny and gave a new definition to the word  "cool."  I got an outline of a saxophone player on my arm.  Mike was patient in working with me on the design, guiding me through the process, and  the results exceeded my expectations. It's located off the Lorimer stop in Williamsburg- I don't hang out here that often, as I live in Sunnyside, but I will definitely come back here for my second inking.  I went in the day before for a consultation and spoke to Clementine, the sweetest girl on the planet, about my design. We scheduled an appt for the following day.  I came in and the whole process took about 45 min.  The backroom reminded me of a pleasant and spotless morgue.  Nothing morbid about it.  and, ironically, they're playing swing music from the 1930s and 40s, the owners whistling and humming to each tune.  These guys (and gals) know what they're doing and have the balls to back it up. I would recommend to anyone.
Review Source:I am so happy I went to Fly Rite! I got a tattoo from a children's book with a lot of detail and it turned out so amazing. The staff are all so friendly and funny, and they seemed genuinely excited about the design. Everyone here is really kind and not pretentious at all.
I was a little nervous going in as I was getting the tattoo done on my left butt cheek, but it was no big deal just sitting in the middle of the shop with my pants down, these guys are real pros!
It has been almost 7 months and I am still obsessed with my tattoo. I just wish I hadn't promised myself that I wouldn't get anymore tattoos after this one, I want to go back.
The artists here are truly talented, and I was really surprised how wonderfully affordable it is! And then on top of all of that, it is pretty convenient. Less than a block from Metropolitan G, Lorimer L is not far, and the BQE is also right there for those of you with automobiles.
If you are in the market for a tattoo I can't recommend this place more!
I love Mike Lucena.  I recently went there for a fairy tattoo.  Initially the first drawing he did I didn't like but he went back and drew what I liked to my specifications. He brought me  in the back and started his magic.  He had me cracking up the entire time I was there.  I was in pain and laughing at the same time!!! I am still in love with the tattoo as I am writing this a month later.  If I could I would go back for more I would.
The staff is so friendly!! Â The receptionist Clementine is a sweetheart. I cannot say enough nice things about the people in there. Â While I was waiting for Mike to finish up working on another client one of the other tattoo artists walked by me and came back to see if I was okay ( I went by myself and I guess I looked nervous).
I went to the shop because of the reviews here on Yelp. I PROMISE you will not be disappointed. GO TO FLYRITE TATTOO!! I wish I went there before I got my two previous tattoos. Â I must re-iterate...I AM IN LOVE WITH MIKE LUCENA!!! He is easy on the eyes ( a real cutie), HILARIOUS, Â and a AMAZING ARTIST!!!
I only have a two tattoos, my friends on the other hand, have sleeves and insane backpieces and chestpeices. Â Needless to say, I've visited and hung out in a good amount of tattoo shops over the past 4 years. Â I came to check out Fly Rite on a Friday because I was in the area and had heard good things. Â My friend and I went in to see the vibe of the shop and check out some artist portfolios and flash. Â From the minute I walked in, the atmosphere was clean and extreme authentic. Â There was a woman behind the desk who greeted us and was extremely sweet and friendly who invited us to stay as long as we want and look around. Â This is the first time I've felt so welcome in a tattoo shop, let alone a place that doesn't have to be. Â What i mean by that is these guys have been around for a while and have the clientele and popularity that says they're the best around. Â If you go to any other tattoo shop that has these credentials, they know it, and they don't care much about how you feel. Â they will still have wait lists. Â
A few days later, I had decided to call on my lunch break and see if I could still get what I wanted, which was just a quick wrist tattoo. Â I had called them up and told them I was in Friday. Â They notified me that they cant make appointments over the phone and they needed a deposit, so I'd have to come down and maybe do it next week.. Â 10 minutes later, he called me back and told me to just come down since it was a slow day, it was small, and he'd be able to get me in. Â This was such a cool and unexpected gesture. Â No other shop would do something like this. Â
I went in after work and met my artist, Nick Caruso. Â I've seen his work and I knew he'd do a great job, but I expected the intimidation and ego that tattoo artists that are this established usually have. Â I met Nick in the shop and he was extremely friendly and even though I'm positive he's done small, basic tattoos like this 5 million times, he seemed genuinely interested in doing it and getting me happy with it. Â There was no ego at all and he even showed me some of his own tattoos to get the font right that I wanted. Â I feel like this is very rare, most tattoo artists I've met have an aura in their shop that they're better than you, even if its very subtle. Â Their own tattoos on them are their own and I feel like they try to keep it that way, and refer to flash rather than their own personal tattoos to help you out. Â For some reason, this really stuck with me. Â
He drew it up, was totally cool when I asked him to redraw it, and we went for it. Â He was a very nice dude and a genuine guy. Â He did the tattoo really quick and he has a light hand. Â After about 5 minutes, I didn't even feel much and started to doze off a bit. Â He did a great job and even charged me less than I thought. Â I will absolutely recommend this guy and in the future wont go anywhere else.
Mike Lucena is boss.
I was recommended Flyrite by a buddy up in providence, who made the trek down to NYC to get stuff touched up. He got his done by Nick, but told me everyone is great there...This I don't doubt.
Got my first tat last week, and if I ever decided to get another I would def. go back to Mike. I have to admit the inking hurt like no other, but the receptionist and mike were straight up, 'it's gonna hurt'. They were even kind enough to give me some feedback on size. The store atmosphere seemed super chill and family like. kinda helps you relax when you tensing about your first tat. I guess most importantly they made me feel comfortable. i can assume that this is probably the most important thing when asking someone to stick a needle in you multiple times...
As a side note, they don't take walk-ins and require a prior deposit.
Pros:
+ Super clean shop
+ Friendly, unpretentious receptionist
+ Talented artists
+ Everyone's extremely professional, which is a major plus when you're lying down half nekkid on a table
Cons:
- Um, I'm too broke to go there on a more regular basis?
I'm a tattoo snob. I admit it. I waited till I was 25 to get inked because I never found someone I could trust enough to leave a permanent mark on my body. Â If I have to live with it forever, dude, it has to be perfect.
My husband did a ton of research and decided on Flyrite as the place to get his (very, very intricate) sleeve done by Steven Huie. Â He was hoping that Elio would take on the project himself, but Elio suggested Steven since he's more familiar with the subject matter and style that my husband was looking for. Â
I went in and got my chest pieces done by Steven shortly after. Â And then went back several more times for a giant back piece. Â One more session and I'm done...for now.
My back piece is absolutely gorgeous. Â I have people stop me on the street and ask where I got it done. Â I have women gawking at it in the gym locker room (major faux pas!). Â Hell, even my anti-ink mother had to admit that this thing is more than just a tattoo: Â it's a work of art.
Bottom line: Â I'm convinced Steven Huie can walk on water. Â Go ahead and hand your wallet over to him --you will not be disappointed.
Can't believe how long it took me to review this place after getting some work done here last year. Â I'm not from New York but wanted to get some tattoo work done here as a birthday gift on the trip.
What I wanted was a small script tattoo on my wrist so we were told that Mike Lucena was the man to see. We had an appointment for Saturday around 2pm but didn't get to actually sit down with Mike until about 3:30/3:45 since his earlier appointment ran longer than expected. I was a little upset about that to be honest but no way was I going to complain to someone that is about to stick a needle in me.
Besides the waiting forvever incident. Â the tattoo work itself came out PERFECT and exactly the way I wanted, it wasn't anything crazy but I wanted to be happy with it like anyone else getting a tattoo would. Mike himself was also chill and laid back and even joked around with me for a bit since he found out it was my first time getting a tattoo.
Go check out Mike for any script work cause if I lived in N.Y I most definitely would!
After reading reviews on Yelp I decided to go to Flyrite for my first  tattoo.
The staff was very nice and helpful and the place was very clean. I made an appt with Nick Caruso and even though he has a month waiting list, he managed to squeeze me in after 1 week. Â
The tattoo took about an hour and I am very happy with it. Nick made it very comfortable for me and took time to answer my questions. I recommend Nick and Fly Rite to any one looking to get a tattoo.
I went to this place based on the many positive Yelp reviews and the fact that I felt it was time to ditch my former tattoo artist - since I felt he was a little unprofessional with the way he did business.
Oh well, I got two from him and I planned on going here for my 3rd one. I was skeptical at first because one of the reviewers on here noted that the girl at the front desk, as well as one of the artists was a little snobbish (and I'm big on how I receive customer service). But, she seemed cool to me, had a picture and words ready for what I wanted, booked the appointment in a week and just like that I got it done.
Comfortable setting, tattooing time was WAY quicker than I expected (I got an angel with wings shaded in and words under it - that took about 50min) and I definitely found a place where I could go again.
Nothing negative to say about the place:
Pros: Clean, cool and comfortable place. Many books/illustrations to view. Able to look at artwork from different artists and pick which one you find suitable to work on you. Price was reasonable for me.
Cons: I'd really have to over-analyze things to give a con really. But he didn't give me instructions on how to care for the tattoo, then again, he knows I have two other ones, so it wasn't a huge deal with me at all. Also, they only accept cash deposits.
All in all, great place to try, or even walk-in and check out.
marina is good friend of my boyfriends and i do admire her work on him!
last night after my birthday dinner (at m shanghai!) he surprised me with a piece by marina. yeap, just walk on in, totally not mentally prepared to sit down and get work done, kind of surprise. good thing i always have ideas brewing about in my head because no way was i passing up this chance! needless to say, she was just what i expected. she's got a great personality which i know can ease the tattoo nerves, professional and best of all, if you don't like something, she'll work with you until you do.
it was the best birthday surprise ever....
and of course, my boyfriend couldn't resist getting work done too!
Mike Lucena is the man!!!!!! I got a trail of stars going down my arm and was so in love with it that I went back for a "girlie" ( she had a bow) skull and bones on my hand. Everything was wonderful- from the cleanliness of the shop to the way the receptionist and artists make you feel comfortable. They even tried to talk me out of my skull tatt due to future career opportunities, how considerate is that??They're a little pricey ($60 minimum) but for the work they do well worth it. I dont ever think i'll go elsewhere.
Review Source:I had 33 hours of tattoos before I stepped into Flyrite for the first time.
A good friend of mine, had a good friend who was tattooed by Marina, and had an excellent experience. I bit the bullet and cheated on my "usual guy", and am absolutely 100% thrilled I did.
Her work is absolutely gorgeous. She is professional, friendly, and frankly, has "the touch of a woman" - two days later I am completely heeled, and felt next to no pain in the 2 hours I sat to get my cupcake tattoo.
I will be using Marina in an ongoing sleeve, and definitely recommend her and the shop. It's clean, fair priced, easy to get to, and just overall comfortable shop to be in.
I finally got up the nerve to get that tattoo I had always wanted...via Yelp's suggestion, I decided on Flyrite. Â I definitely had a few butterflies in my stomach as I road the train over to Brooklyn. Â I was really worried that I would feel awkward at the tattoo shop, and everyone would treat me like a silly kid because I wasn't all tatted up and was nervous about a tiny wrist tattoo. Â
Anyways, this was definitely not the case. Â There ended up being 4 of us getting tattoos. Â Two of my friends were adding more ink to their canvases, and two of us were newbies. Â My friend Nick and I both had Nick Caruso. Â He let me go first because I was a bit more anxious. Â Nick was cool and funny and made me feel super comfortable. Â I made him re-stick the outline 5 times because I was convinced it wasn't straight...I think it ended up back in the original position. Â He didn't even hint at being annoyed with me. Â He then educated me on death metal and the art of tattoos, which made my tattoo process go by pretty quick. Â I stood up right afterward, and apparently looked kinda funky, so he made me sit back down, which was a good idea because then I not only looked funky but felt it. Â He sent my friend around the corner to grab me a coke to get some sugar in me. Â Also, we headed to Alligator Lounge after, which is conveniently located a few blocks away...pizza and beer after a tattoo is a huge plus!
Thanks Nick Caruso! Â You gave me a sweet tattoo and saved me from a very embarrassing scene of puking or passing out post tattooing.
I love this tattoo shop! I called ahead and they were so polite. They explained that appointments can't be done over the phone, you need to come in, but If the piece is fairly simple or small, there is at least one artist doing walk ins every day, and to get there when they open at 2. I did, but I was beat to the punch by a couple other people, and I was given an appointment to come back later that night. They were not judgmental at all. I do not look like a tattoo kind of girl and I hate shops with attitude. This is not one of those shops. They were very nice, and they took their time with me. I enjoyed the friendly, personal atmosphere.
When I got there for my appointment, Mike Drexler was wicked meticulous! He made sure the placement was something that both he and I liked, discussed every aspect of the tattoo with me before he started. It was on the ribs, and he was very good about telling me exactly what I needed to do to make his job easier for the both of us. Everyone in the shop was personable and funny. Mike did an amazing job. If something was strange he explained what he was doing. He took extra steps to make sure the tattoos came out right and he was able to tell when the shading on my largest star was getting to be too much for me and would switch to a different area to give me a break. All of the artists at Flyrite seem amazing, I would trust any of them with my body.
All in all I highly recommend Flyrite, I am so happy with this tattoo, and I am so thrilled about Flyrite. My only hope for Flyrite is that at some point they add a female artist to their ranks. I will be back, either way.
Finding a shop to ink my first tattoo on my baby soft skin has been years in the making. Â After reading dozens of reviews, I called Flyrite on Friday evening to find out whether or not I could possibly get my tattoo done Saturday afternoon. Â I give the phone attendent props for being very nice, inviting, and informative. Â I got to the shop at exactly 2pm when they open, and there was already someone ahead of me. Â I did have to wait an hour, but that is only because the girl that was ahead of me was nervous and had to run to the store for some juice or something or other. Â I was able to get in to see Nick at about 2:45 or so. Â Nick was also a very cool guy and he did a very good job. Â It came out exactly how I wanted it to. Â It actually hurt less than I thought it was going to. If I come up with another tattoo in another couple of years, I will definitely go back to Flyrite.
Review Source:Sadly, Charlie moved on to Baltimore to do his own thing since I last visited. But I got lucky to get Nick for a couple hours on a whim this Saturday and finally got my Ferdinand the Bull tattoo I've been wanting. He also did some work on my roommates sleeve, and gave a very timid female friend of mine a delicate rosary on her wrist. I will only be letting Nick do my tats from now on.
Review Source:I had a long hard search for a new artist in NY. I just moved to the city and had some canvas left to sling on. Now I'm uber picky, I worked in a shop back home and apprenticed for 2 years. So needless to say Nick from this place did an AMAZING JOB!!! A bit heavy handed but the conversation on old school HC made the time pass quick. The work he did on my quarter sleeve is beautiful and i recommend all my friends to him. It was probably the first storeas well that didn't give me a "why are you here newbie" glare since most of my ink is covered. I had all straight lines, no blow outs, and amazing gray work. I feel bad that the economy has sucked me dry but as soon as i have a few extra bucks I'm going back for the other arm and my final back piece... This place has history, a history of talent...
Review Source:No, I mean it. Nick Caruso is the fucking hotness. He's done my last 3 tattoos and now I can't imagine letting anyone else touch me with a tattoo gun. Ever. Dude is the reason why they're called ARTISTS. I bet if I asked him to design a tattoo of Yosemite Sam peeing on the Tasmanian Devil atop a flaming Mets logo made out of skulls and dolphins inside a giant yin-yang, it would actually look cool.
For real though.
I gave Mike Lucena some ideas (photos & illustrations) for a cardinal and he drew a new piece from them. Â I was stunned with the end result: Â so much detail and color and shading! Â (Plus, it completely covers an old tattoo I had from 15 years ago.) Â It's beautiful and I am thrilled with the result. Â
Mike is sweet and funny and the staff are friendly and helpful. Â Highly recommended.
I'm a picky customer when it comes to even the most mundane of purchases. Â So when it comes to something as permanent as a tattoo, I can be borderline psychotic. Â
I've had a number of tattoos before, all relatively small ones, but the one I got at Flyrite was my first serious one. Â Prior to booking an appointment, I did extensive research and visited a few shops. Â I was really blown away by Nick Caruso's portfolio and after meeting with him, I was ready to put down a deposit.
Nick was professional, yet fun to be around. Â Most importantly, he didn't seem to mind drawing, redrawing and repositioning the tattoo a million times. Â The atmosphere is great; there is good music and constant banter. Â The receptionist is really cool too; I liked that she seemed well organized and on top of things (she remembered me every time I came in).
After all that, the most important thing is that I'm extremely happy with how my tattoo came out. Â I'll be wearing it on my arm with pride for the rest of my life!
So, Kids, if you're thinking about getting a tattoo, I highly suggest checking out Flyrite. Â I also suggest putting a lot of thought into it because no one wants to see your Patrick Swayze chest piece.
Alex is a wizard. Â After having my fist tattoo done at Flyrite in 2005, I returned in 2007 for a tattoo that Alex artfully tattooed on my foot in record time (much appreciated since it's a particularly painful spot) with flawless execution. Â He was fun to talk to while he worked and put me at ease. Â His artistic interpretation of the inspiration images I brought it could not have been better.
I like the staff at Flyrite, and their new-ish, bigger space a few doors over from the original storefront is great. Â The guy who did my tattoo in 2005 didn't do nearly as skilled a job as Alex, but it's ok because he's not there anymore. Â The artists specialize in traditional sailor tattoos but seem to be able to do just about anything.
Amazing Amazing Amazing place.
Nick Caruso is the most amazing artist.
I've had 2 pieces done by him so far, both black and grey pieces.
Incredible attention to detail, shading beyond compare, and incredibly reasonably priced.
I will be going to no-one else for all my tattoos in the future. Period.
just went to flyrite for the first time-- not my first tattoo, but my first tattoo in nyc. Â got a medium-sized black & white (lots of shading/lighting, but no colors) piece done by Mike Lucena, who did an amazing job. Â the detail is incredible and he couldn't have been easier to work with. Â definitely listened to what i had in mind, we discussed size/placement, and he gave me exactly what i wanted. Â very reasonable price, and got an appointment for the next day. Â also, everyone else in the shop i spoke with was totally friendly and helpful. Â i'll definitely be back...
Review Source:I got a tattoo on the back of my neck done by Charlie. I called earlier and they were nothing but nice and sweet to me. They told me what time was best for walk-ins and the whole thing was quick and painless.
It was my first time and they made me feel very comfortable. Charlie was meticulous and made sure I was very happy with it. I didn't feel bad about my tiny tattoo or my choice like how I heard other big parlors in Manhattan would.
I feel like the price was very fair. It isn't cheap, but something you intend on having on your body for life ... you want to invest in. You are paying for quality. That being said, prices for very tiny tattoos (mine took like 15 minutes) isn't as inflated as some places I have heard of.
(actually, I should mention that I called other parlors in Manhattan to see if they can fit me in and most were fine, just not very accommodating... one was downright rude.)
In the end, I did some searches on the internet and hands down FlyRite had amazing reviews and best comments on "bedside manner," which I think is important.
I was thrilled with my experience and would definitely go again. Charlie is great.
Walked in last Saturday while visiting my friend in NY. I live in Boston but when I called a place there to see if they accepted walk-ins, they shut me down. Fly Rite receptionist was very accomodating on the phone beforehand, telling me if they couldn't see me Saturday then they would definitely fit me in Sunday.
I was expecting to wait an hour but my artist's appt canceled and they were able to do my tattoo after a 20 minute wait. Before then, Marina, the receptionist, was great and looked up pictures on the internet with me to try to figure out what I wanted. She also drew it out the stencil, and I was pleased with the results.
Wish I could remember my artist's name, but he was really nice and friendly. When placing the stencil I thought it was a little crooked, but he said no problem and wiped it off, carefully placing it again. All in all, he did a great job-- the tattoo's healing great and I will recommend the place to others.
Place is clean, and the employees all seem to really care about each other. And the price wasn't bad at all--cheaper than I'd been quoted in Boston.
I am the world's biggest wuss, so when a place makes getting repeatedly jabbed with an ink-tipped needle a pleasant experience for me, you know they're on to something.
I walked into Flyrite a little over a year ago, never having set foot in a tattoo place, but determined to finally get the ink I had always told myself I would get. I admit, I was a bit intimidated before I walked in as I wasn't exaggerating about me being a wuss: I'd only ever seen tattoo shops in movies and tv shows and my neurotic self expected to find some dark, dingy hole-in-the-wall populated by all sorts of unsavory characters who wouldn't hesitate to throw me through a window/shiv me in the ribs/steal my lunch money.
Thankfully, it was the complete opposite of the image my stupid brain had made up; the entire place was immaculate and the staff was friendly, laid-back and professional. My initial visit was to consult with Elio, owner of the shop and, based on samples I'd seen in his online portfolio, the artist I chose to do my piece (though the other artists have amazing work as well - check them all out to see which one best matches the style of tattoo you have in mind). I have zero artistic ability so I didn't go in with a sketch of what I wanted, but Elio had no problem taking the idea I came in with and creating something that was better than I expected.
I got the tattoo about a month later - Elio got it done quickly and relatively painlessly. I was very proud of the fact that I didn't cry like a baby... and also because the tattoo turned out awesome - so awesome, in fact, that I just had more work done at Flyrite a few weeks ago.
If you're looking to get some ink, definitely check this place out, even if you're a total wuss like me.
Awesome experience from start to finish. The girl at the counter was totally chill as well as being completely professional. Elio did my piece and he asked all the right questions about how I wanted it. I took a part from a painting so he said he was going to do his best to recreate all the brush strokes and shading - and it turned out beautifully! He said he had a lot of fun doing it, and it showed.
Bring your deposit in cash - and for the final work credit cards are accepted, of course, but you get super smiles if you pay the whole shebang with cash.
I'd give this place 10 stars if I could. It's a fantastic shop.
Charlie Foos did my Sailor Jerry piece. He took his time making sure that it was positioned right (it was on my bicep and went around, so it really needed to be precise and viewed head-on). He worked fast. Â He took a design that I downloaded online and really sharpened the detail, added a lot of shading. It went from ordinary to outstanding. He's an excellent artist. I had no idea it would look that good when it was finished!! Â Charlie made the experience really enjoyable--he's a nice, even-tempered guy from Baltimore and was a total pleasure to be with. I've already got my next one by him planned!
Everything you'd want from a tattoo experience, plain and simple.
**Note: a sample of Charlie's work is my profile photo! Well done indeed.
What better way is there to spend a sunday evening than getting a little good body art at a great shop?! Charlie did a fantastic job updating my 14 year old tattoo so I can be proud of it again rather than hide the faded blur it had become. Everything about Flyright is clean and comfortable and the people who work there are friendly, professional, high quality artists. All in all it was such a great tattooing experience!
Review Source:I got my first tattoo at their old location. Â The staff was very friendly and were great at making me feel less nervous, even if there was death metal playing in the background. Â
I took a friend of mine here to get her first tattoo as well and she had the same experience... super nervous at first, but quickly put at ease by everyone working there.
The place is super clean. Â The artists very talented, and I plan on going back there for my next tat.
Saw Alex last year for a cover up. Â You would never know it was a cover up--full color, traditional sparrow (hiding a lame decision made as a very underage teenager). Â Everyone is very nice, very helpful. Â My tattoo is in a place that involves my underwear showing, and Alex very considerately did the ink in the back (private) room. Â Great experience--was recommended to me by a friend with full sleeves, so she knows of what she speaks.
Review Source:Flyrite does great traditional work.
Kelly did a small-scale Sailor Jerry homeward bound ship and banner on my left wrist a few years ago, with seven colors and a ton of detail. All in a 2-inch by 3-inch area. I get compliments on it all the time. It was my last tattoo in NYC before moving away, and I love it.
A great place to get ink done. Everyone here is very friendly and welcoming, I never got any attitude and they are all laid back. At some shops, I have gotten that feeling like they don't want to waste your time if you aren't doing some elaborate $1500 sleeve, but that is not the case at Flyrite. I had 2 sessions with Charlie Foos who is a great (and hilarious) guy. He made the five hours (total) of tattooing on my ribs as painless as possible. Very clean place and close to the Lorimer stop on the L.
Review Source:ok, so i haven't GOTTEN my tattoo here yet, but already it has been a great experience.
my friend and i busted in, kamikaze style, with no warning, very much on purpose. Â we figured it would be a good way of getting the real-deal-feel. we wanted to see if anyone would help us, and if the tattoo artist we were interested would pop out to say hello. (this will be my first and only tattoo, so i am obviously being really picky and making a huge deal of this decision.)
the guy at the desk was pretty nice, he gave us some books to look at, told us to look around, and alerted the artist (stephen huey) that we were there to check him out.
stephen came out and met with us for a few minutes - he was super nice and really helpful. he answered all my questions and made some suggestions about my design.
i made my appointment for later this month and laid down a deposit! i am feeling really comfortable with this place and with stephen. all the work i saw looked excellent, the place was clean and organized, and i got a really good vibe. i will probably update this review to 5 stars (and add more info) once my tattoo is complete! wish me luck!
UPDATE: just got my tattoo last night. everything went completely awesomely and i am 100% satisfied with my entire experience. i am in love with my tattoo and stephen was great! changing this review to 5 stars. i highly reccomend this shop and stephen. i am absolutely amazed with the art he put on my body!!!
This is more of a review for Myles Karr (whom I had an appointment with before he moved there) than the shop itself, but since Myles lives there now, the shop benefits from Myles' awesomeness. Actually, the shop gets a thumbs up too because it's only a couple of blocks from my apartment. Anyway, if you don't know Myles yourself, it's likely you know somebody who has a tattoo by him...and if you want an awesome tattoo done by a talented dude who is nice, funny and totally chill, you should go to him too.
UPDATE: Myles is now over at SAVED tattoo, which is also in Williamsburg...just on the other side of the BQE.
Small shop by the BQE. Completely unpretentious and do amazing work under the radar. I've had friends and partners done by Steve Huie and Kelly Krantz (who is no longer there, I believe), and their work is solid.
I had a larger piece on my back inked by Elio Espana, the founder of the place, and not only did he finish it in record time and made it as painless as possible (considering it was right on my spine), but it looks absolutely fantastic and completely painterly (ie like a watercolor, which is what I was hoping for). I've never had this happen to me with other work I've had done, but people honestly come up to me whenever the tattoo is exposed to compliment or talk to me about it. It's led to some weird interactions, and definitely gets old... but I guess it is an ultimate compliment to the work Flyrite does that other people respond to it so well.
I have to agree w/ all of the other reviews... clean, low-key environment. Â On both occasions, I've had excellent experiences -- start to finish. Â From walking in and being greeted, chatting it up while waiting, cleaning up and styling my designs, and the process of getting inked -- all flawless. Â A BIG thank you to Alex!!
Review Source:One of the least intimidating places to get yourself tattooed up. The guys here are all sweet and down-to-earth and, most of all, talented at what they do, from flash to custom work. Rates are cheaper than most Manhattan tattoo shops, and it's right off the second stop in Brooklyn on the L train. And if you go there often enough, and are a moderately cool person, they'll probably give you a frequent flyer discount of some sort. Overheard conversation while you're getting tattooed is entertaining enough that you may temporarily forget that you're getting ink injected into your body.
