Very dissappointing to say the least. Â We called atleast three times to try and get an idea or be able to talk to the artist my husband wanted. Â Finally on Friday, they told him to come in at noon, and he would be available. Â We drove from NJ, paid tolls, and parking and were ready. Â We figured it would be expensive, so got a quote around home, and then figured for double that price..thinking that would be a good estimate. Â We walk in and ask for the particular artist, and were treated like we were crazy to ask for him. Â I explained how we called on Friday, and the guy said that he had worked a three day shift, and deserved a break, and that we should have made an appointment. Â My husband was wearing a shirt with bascially the picture of what we wanted, but it needed tweaking. Â The guy helping us was very upset that we did not have an accurate picture, and no appointment. and what do you know..while talking the artist we wanted just walks up and says hi. Â He wasn't doing anything, just like they had said. Â And if your artists are so good, they should be able to draw anything without a picture, and we brought one that was a pretty good idea. Â So, we proceed with the consult, and the guy tells us he needs to find a picture on the internet, and it would be about $2000. Â Almost four times what we expected. Â And he told us to come back late evening, like we had nothing better to do. Â He had a starting price for that tattoo and we explained that would've been a good thing to say on the phone, and we wouldn't have wasted our time traveling there. Â The receptionist never even looked at us, or said hello, and no one else even cared that we were there. Â We were the only ones in the shop, btw. Â Dissappointed to say the least. Yes, you get what you pay for, but that was ridiculous. Â Pretty much a waste of our day. Â They made us feel like we should be lucky to be standing in their shop and if we didn't want to spend money, we'd better leave. We would rather spend our money where it's appreciated.
Review Source:I have visited the club with a friend, after having being in touch for a long.
All we wanted to have was a tattoo to remind us forever our visiting NY.
The tattoo artist we talked to (unknown to us) asked us an amount of money extremely ashamed considering the shape and dimensions of the tattoo we were asking about.
We tried to bargain a long but he did not lower the money to our possibilities.
We went away without a tattoo.....
The "remind" is assured !
Who do you think you are? Movie stars?
What do you think you have? A secret talent? A special blessing?
The same tattoo in an another tattoo studio came out for 1/5 of that money.
Shame on you. Too much disappointing !
FORGET ABOUT MAKING TATTOO ART LIKE "SNOBBY MOVIE STARS BUSINESS !
SHAME SHAME SHAME !!!!!
I have gotten two tattoos from Luke and my husband has gotten one from him. Â His work is awesome. Â He has spoiled me with his work so much that I now travel from Philadelphia to NYC to get a tattoo done by him and only him. Â I hope to go back again to have him do more work on me in the next couple of months. Â You get what you pay for and if a tattoo is going to be on my body for the rest of my life I rather pay for good work, because cheap work normally is not good.
Review Source:Clean, professional, with a that staff is very courteous and helpful. Â Brought a friend here for his first tattoo and they treated him with kid-gloves.
Yes, more expensive than other places but you get what you pay for. Â And if you are going to have it for the rest of your life, it's worth it to go here.
This review is for the staff/venue (2 stars). Please read this review if you are actually getting a tattoo. Other reviews are simply about the decor of the place.
My second review (below) is for Luke Wessman (5 stars).
------
We traveled from San Diego to have my husband's tattoo done by experts at the Wooster Street Social Club, and to celebrate my birthday. We were going to be in NYC for only 3 days.
The attitude of every single person in this shop (outside of Luke) was horrible. They all wandered in after opening. Noon doesn't mean opening, it means showing up and starting to set up. They treat every person who walks in as though "you should be lucky we're taking our time to talk to you" or "you should be lucky we're doing your tattoo". I have no idea how this place makes money! They all sit around talking!
11:50am: Arrived 10min early
12:00pm: Doors open and we're the 2nd in line
12:35pm : Waited 35 min to talk to someone. My husband had sketches & pictures and a good idea of what he wanted. The guy we spoke to rushed us a little, but said he had a good idea of what my husband wanted. Told us to go grab lunch or wander for 1 hour. When we returned they'd have a sketch, time frame and cost.
1:30pm: We arrived back in just under 1 hour. There were 3 people who weren't even there when we left being tattooed. The guy we spoke to was on his cell phone talking loud enough we could hear him talking about his plans for the weekend.
2:40pm: We'd now been back for +1hour and were not acknowledged by ANYONE! The same guy we talked to about the design was now hoping around the shop talking to other tattoo artists, on the phone, out for a smoke, out to get food. Came back to eat. The "receptionist" never said a word to us, but also hopped around the shop. They were talking about the music playing, their weekend plans, etc. One of the artists even stopped in the middle of tattooing this woman's hand to talk about a band. The look on the woman's face was shock when she sat there for at least 15minutes while he chatted away.
Finally after sitting there for 1hour my husband was over it.
2:50pm: (+2hours) We agreed that in 5minutes we were out of there. I believe they overheard us because FINALLY the girl at the desk came over to tell us we were next. When we asked what that meant, she then informed us that the tattoo had NOT EVEN BEEN SKETCHED YET! The guy tattooing a girl in the front room would be sketching it when he was done tattooing, so maybe another hour or so, but they couldn't even give us a time frame.
3:00pm: (3hours) I took off to shop, site see, etc leaving my hubby to decide if he wanted to wait it out.
3:30pm: (3.5hours) my husband texts me to say he just saw a sketch and paid for the tattoo.
4:00pm: (4hours) I arrived back to my hubby still waiting.
4:20pm: We're taken to the front of the shop where the tattoo will be done and meet Luke. From here on out the evening was amazing. Luke was phenomenal and made the night.
Up to this point, this place is a joke! Luke deserves his own review as I do not want to lump him into this one. Please see my 5 star review to hear all about Luke!

SECOND REVIEW - Luke Wessman - 5 Stars for sure!
The minute we sat down with Luke the day got way better! Luke was so professional and his collaboration of the sketches my husband provided was spot on! My husband loved the sketch Luke put together and was thrilled to have someone as skilled as Luke doing his tattoo.
Once the tattoo was on my hubby's arm, Luke even added to it, getting it just right. It took about 2 hours for Luke to complete the tattoo and the entire time he politely chatted, commented on the tattoo and made the entire experience perfect.
The finished product was amazing! My husband couldn't be happier and even Luke was happy to have done his first Tribal Tree Tattoo.
I look forward to seeing what Luke does in the future and all the amazing work he has up his sleeve!
I got a tattoo here, but prior to the show ever airing. Â They were in pre-production. Â I bring this up because the lack of crowd/chaos at the time might be different now that the show has aired. Â But, when I was there it was very chill, just a few people in the shop, and very relaxed and friendly. Â The decor was top notch and very comfortable to hang out there. Â i had Tommy do my tattoo and he was extremely friendly, talkative, and professional. Â I had my toe tattooed and it barely even hurt, which is a testament to his skill.
Review Source:This place is dope, inside and out. Went there on St. Patty's day which fell on a Saturday. Was afraid it would be crowded and overrun by drunk tourists getting impulse tats. Not the case at all. Got there around 11am, not knowing it opened at 12 on Saturdays. No one was there when I got there, but a crowd slowly built up and by the time it opened, a good 20 people were there waiting to get in. No one bum rushed the door, in fact a super cool regular to Wooster St insisted the crowd let me get to the front since she knew I was there first. BIG UP'S to her..she knows who she is.
Worked with the guy at the desk who helped me take my concept and put it to INK, then got a chance to let my tattoo artist, Carl Grace make his magic happen. Carl was a guest artist and his work is incredible. I almost felt like my tat didn't do his talents justice. Google this guy to see his stuff. This cat does amazing work, tells amazing stories, and made the experience well worth the money. If you're penny pinching on your tattoo, you probably shouldn't be getting one. These guys are the real deal.
And yes, the drunk St. Pattys Day crowd came in throughout the day, but mostly to observe and take a few flicks at these amazing artists do their thing. This place isn't just a TV show. True talent here and I love the idea of bringing in guest artists to keep it fresh. Keep it up, WSSC.
I recently got a portrait done by Mikey (Tommy older brother) Mikey did a great job. Tommy was a really nice dude willing take pictures. Mikey was a really nice guy. The guy that worked in the front was very informative. The place is comfortable. I have 6 other tattoos and this place was the most comfortable for me. I must say I arrived there at 11am on a Saturday and didn't leave until 4:47 and i was the 3rd person to get tatted. So come early if you want to get tatted with something big.
Review Source:Don't even know where to start on this. Â As a guy being tattooed in Manhattan since 1987. Â When it was still illegal. Â Watched the show. Â Fuck the show. Â Crap. Â I like Chris Torres' attitude, as it's real NYC, but he's not a great tattoo artist anyhow. Â Ami seemed like a ball-buster for no reason on the show. Â Wanted to see if it was still open and what the fuck was going on. Â Go in, mid-day. Â Not one fucking thing is going on in the shop. Â Tommy is there, doing nothing. Â No one is getting tattooed. Â Megan is there looking incredibly attractive - better than even TV or print if that is believable. Â But she was hustling furniture all over the place for nothing going on. Â This shop must be a financial disaster. Â No one else from the show was there. Â Most of the "books" were full of crapola, except a guest artist and Tommy. Â Ami's book and some others weren't there, if they're even still tattooing there. Â The clothing shop was pathetic. Â A few trucker hats with the brims all frayed at the same point to seem worn. Â A few shit shirts with Ami James name on them or AJ on them, like that means anything. Â No other recognition. Â A 60+ couple was there for EVER, waiting to be talked to. Â Finally only when I cut the room into a quarter, and they were forced to ask Tommy if he was an artist there, did he make them speak to the bearded ponce (not Robear - the jerk who was always shutting down Billie on the show) to find out rates and shit. Â No one cared for the one customer they had (the old wonderful couple). Â No one cared for me, but I didn't want any caring unless Megan wanted to vomit on me and kiss me. Â Scratch that first part. Â Cut to the second. Â And the ugly old woman running the counter with the bearded ponce was a useless fool. Â I asked about the guest artist and she was as helpless as a person could be. Â Couldn't write down his name or his dates without me prodding her like a farmer prods a cow with a cattle prod. Â If this is how Ami hopes to make money, he needs to think again. Â And get someone in there to bullwhip these lazy morons into shape. Â PS - I'm available.
Review Source:Now this is one classy tattoo parlor. I'm not saying this because of the publicized TV series NY Ink. You have to go in there to believe it. From the front of the shop to the back, this place is highly decorated an industrial theme. I came here when there was an event being held and there was someone getting tattooed in the middle of the floor!!
The results of the ink work--magnificent. All the tattoos I've seen came out nicely. However, it's a bit pricey and painful but might as well since you're getting something that will last you a lifetime.
I thought it would be nice for my husband's birthday to plan a trip to the Ami's new shop. I started with asking questions on their Facebook page and was told to email then with any specific questions. I emailed them asking them if any of the 3 artists my husband was interested in would be there on the date we were going. I explained how hard it was to both get the day off together, I was emailed a generic response back about hours and no appointments are taken just walk ins. I emailed 4+ more times within a few weeks and got the same response. I don't understand how you answer an email asking if any of the 3 artists we wanted would be in with:
"Hey! Just come in. We are open every day from 11 am to 9 pm. We don't take appointments we work by walk in only. We also don't give quotes other than in person. As well, we have a 200$ minimum and price by the piece not by the hour. Â Look forward to seeing you at the Social Club!
I didn't ask for rates, or times. I asked if Ami, Tim, Tommy or Megan would be working on a specific date..
Anyway, we took the day off from work along with 2 close friends and left CT at 7:45AM to wait on their steps for the doors to open at 11AM.
We were the first ones there, we were excited. Close to 11AM, a guy walked up and unlocked the door, I scooted out of the way (still sitting) and smiled at him.. to which he responded by barking at us " We don't open until 11AM! Â OK... strike one.
When the doors opened we went to the front desk and to be greeted rudley by the same guy who opened the door. he was crass, short, rude and didn't even look at you while speaking to you. HE quotes the tattoos (never have I ever seen anyone but the artist quote a job) but whatever. Too bad he quoted 4 totally diffeernt pieces in size and detail, the same..$900.00 ...one lily? $900.00, yeah, right. Â He continued to be short and rude with any of our questions until I had thought we had taken enough abuse and told my husband and friends we were leaving. AND By the WAY, not ONE of the 4 artists I had specifically asked if they would be there in my emails was there.. NOT ONE. So, the four of us took the day off work (It was my husband's bday), drove to NYC, paid for parking to be treated so rude by an arrogant front desk clerk who hates his job.
If you check their Facebook page, loadsof people are posting the same experience but they delete them quickly or defend their poor behavior..their loss certainley not mine or the other folks who walked out with cash in their pockets they had been willing to spend.
Lesson learned. I will be sticking with Hope Gallery in New Haven, CT who does amazing work ( the owner did work on Paul Booth's girlfriend kind of good) . Hope Gallery is not only beautiful but the staff is friendly, professional and do amazing work. check it out http://www.hopegalleryta…
This shop is amazing. It may be expensive but the work they do is unbelievable and so worth every penny. It is VERY clean and spacious. They are very helpful and professional but only tattoo on a first come first serve basis so go early in the day when they first open which is at 11. I got two tattoos done by luke wessman and plan to go back for more.
