Went today for the first time; Jarrod cut my hair.
Fantastic place for a proper, barbershop cut; the hot shave edge-up is a nice touch.
Showed Jarrod a quick picture of what I wanted, and he made it happen.
Will definitely be back in a few weeks!

Great place for a man's haircut. I move a lot and always try to convince myself thy going to any old salon (Supercuts) for a cut isn't so bad. Then I wind up paying roughly $35 for a haircut I don't really like and grows in funny a week later.
--Every time it makes me a grumbletonian, and I remember, "Use your brain-canister. Get to a real gentleman's barber shop and get a real man's haircut."

It is important to remember these guys have barber's licenses just for cutting men's hair and they're hilarious to chew the fat with Jared, Bart, and Joe. Laid back atmosphere where you can --...

I can't say much about their ink department, but I can say that I am not the only one from the Midtown area who will be going back regularly for my haircuts. This place is great and is a cut above of air for all men. Very happy to see they're expanding and adding a few additional chairs. Hope they never go out of business.
9/10. Highly recommended.

This place is awesome. Recommended by one of my friends to get away from all the girl salons around town and go to a real barber shop. People were awesome. Haircut was awesome. And will be a forever customer. It gets busy seeing a line forming before they opened but came back later that afternoon and didn't have to wait long.

I used to be a regular Big Kat's customer because they're convenient to me and I usually got the haircut I wanted, although they're a bit overpriced for what they are - a nothing-special men's haircut place - and the waits were often long without anyone seeming to be in a rush.
But last time I went in, I was refused service because I rode my bike. That might be reasonable if I came in as a gross, sweaty mess, but I definitely wasn't. I live a few short blocks away, it was before noon, and I hadn't even worn a helmet. Not to mention I had previously ridden my bike to Big Kat's every single time I got my haircut there.
I wouldn't have thought, given the look of the shop and the barbers in it, that they would be such sticklers for hygiene. I won't be going back.

Was a bit of a wait, but fun punk rock music playing. Busy place, but everyone is friendly. Realized after I got home that the hair around me ears was cut to different lengths. Fixed it myself, but how did my barber miss it?

I would definitely give this place another shot. Too good an atmosphere to pass up.

Just randomly found this shop on Yelp, and I was in a desperate need for clean cut and fade...decided to stop by and I'm glad I did...

Ol' School joint with a new twist...all the barbers are friendly and on-point

Got a clean cut, fade and a hot shave edge up for $20...totally worth it...and if you want precision, meticulous and professional cutting abilities...this is a place to go too...

Will definitely be back!

This was my first visit here, and I'll be coming back. I paid $20 for a regular cut with fade.

A really casual environment. I had a young punk rock kid next to me, and an older business man on the bench by the door. It's a mix crowd here.

Don't let any of the barber's look fool you with their tattoos, they do really good cuts, including straight razor shaves.

Joe did a really good job. It turned out the way I wanted it, and he was quick about it.

I liked the location as well. A local bar is next door to it, as well as across the street you have the Continental Club.

Upstairs is a tattoo studio.

A great barbershop in a great location--right off the rail and surrounded by food, beer and music.

Based on reviews here, I waited an hour (on a weekday morning, no less) only to be told they don't offer shaves anymore "because it takes too much time." Really, with no other customers waiting? The barber was quick, and knew exactly the look I wanted, but I got clipped $20 for a flat-top and goatee trimming. Won't waste my time again.

Tried this two times based on good Yelp reviews and proximity to my house. I have no complaints yet, not ready to give five stars because I need to get in more experience.

Have had two separate guys there cut my hair so far, and both of them took their time and did it right. The straight razor shave at the end is the topper on a good clean cut.

The line can be long, but the one time it was really long one of the barbers handed out beers to the guys waiting in line, so it surely pacified me to just relax with a beer and read while I waited.

The crowd of guys there, both the barbers and the patrons, are quite an eclectic mix so it makes for an interesting environment.

I have found my new regular barbershop. I hope the quality remains high!

Good place to go to if you want a standard "gentleman's" cut. Nothing fancy. Electric clipper on the back and sides, scissor cut on the top, hair parted and combed. If you want anything other than that, or have hair that requires a different type of cut, go seek someplace else.

Hair cut aside, the place is conveniently located (whether by car or train). The staff is alright if you want to hear them talk non-stop about things that only they find humorous or if you want to hear about how awesome they themselves think they are.

Price is a bit steep but then again, this guy is paying for prime real estate so it's understandable in my book. (And again, if the gentleman's cut works for you, this is probably going to be a great place for you).

I got a haircut here once and liked it enough to travel 15 miles for a second haircut. Knowing that they close at 5:00 PM on Saturdays, I called at 3:56 PM to ask, "If I get there by 4:30 PM, would I be able to get a hair cut?" They said they have a full house, BUT if I showed up at 4:30 PM they would be able to fit me in. They SPECIFICALLY said they wouldn't "kick me out".

Well, you know where this is going. I show up, and "Sorry, we got a full house. Bye."

Why even bother to tell me to go? I even showed up EARLY, like 4:25! Just save us both the trouble and tell me you can't fit me in!

Point is, don't call to ask about the line or if they can fit you in. Feels like shooting dice if you go after 3:00 PM. I liked my haircut enough the first time, but this experience really turned me off. I was really hoping to find a trusted barber I could go to regularly. Looks like this place isn't it.

**Update** OK, went back and had to wait a pretty long time again, about 2 hours or so. BUT, I really really like my haircut. And the guys are pretty cool.

Also, I must mention that Big Kat's and Kat's Meow are separately owned businesses that happen to share the phone at times. I called Kat's Meow and whoever answered told me they wouldn't "kick me out". Then when I got there, the guys at Big Kat's told me they couldn't fit me in. There was an obvious mis-communication. I complained to Kat's Meow and they did offer a complimentary haircut, so kudos to them for trying to satisfy a dissatisfied customer.

Recently my husband was looking for a place that gave a straight razor shave. Boy did he find the perfect place! We went in to Big Kat's and were immediately charmed by the classic barbershop with a twist. Jarrod immediately greeted us and made us feel welcome. We went on a Wednesday morning so there was no wait. My husband received the very best shave and haircut touch up of his life! The guys in the shop are real and friendly. I will recommend this place to all of my friends and family and next time we just might go upstairs for a tatoo!!

A great haircut at a really great price - that's really all that needs to be said about this place.

I happened upon this barbershop after getting tired of my two frequent options: cutting my hair and trimming my beard on my own, or dropping $50 at V's Barbershop in River Oaks. Based on the reviews on Yelp, I figured I'd give it a go.

I walked in just as they were opening this morning, and I was able to get in with Bart right away. The really great part about this barbershop is the relaxed attitude and complete lack of pretense. The barbers there are just a couple of guys cutting some hair and having good conversation. The guys and the shop absolutely fit into the atmosphere of the surrounding neighborhood.

It took about 40 minutes or so to get my haircut and by beard trimmed, and both looked great. My hair is pretty easy to cut, so that's not a big deal. My beard, however, looked really great when Bart was done. On top of that, my total cost was $17. That's hard to beat.

Next time, I'm absolutely going for the straight razor shave.

I'm not used to having short hair but since I joined the corporate culture 8 months ago I like to keep it pretty clean.

I'd been going to Salons and paying $35-$50 for haircuts I wasnt satisfied for, and also leaving a guilt driven tip.

I wanted a classic looking hair cut, with the fade and tapered look. I knew barbers are usually more specialized in men's cuts so I searched yelp. Found Big Kat's conveniently located near my apartment. It was last minute, but luckily they are walk in only.

I like the vibe of the place, part 50's, part dive, part tattoo shop. The people in there are regulars and the barbers know what they are doing.

I have never had such a thorough hair cut, He did exactly what i asked, and helped me decide what looked best. Its been a day, and I am so pleased with this haircut, best one I've had.

for $15 it cant be beat.

I'll be back every month.

I love this place.

I'm new to Houston and gave Big Kat's a try with all of the positive reviews on Yelp! I was not disappointed.

A list of positives..

1) For $15, I may have gotten the best haircut I've ever had at a barbershop. Jarrod took his time despite the amount of people waiting and paid close attention to the details.
2) These guys (and the customers) are all laid back and inviting. Felt right at home when I walked in.
3) I was offered a beer while I was getting my haircut. For whatever reason, I turned it down. I'll be bringing these guys a six-pack of Lonestar the next time I need a trim.

There is no need to try any other place for me in Houston as I'll be a regular at Big Kat's.

15 bucks for a straight razor shave? 15 bucks for a haircut? I didn't think these kind if places existed anymore.

They take their time but it is definitely worth it. The chairs are old school and super comfortable. Not surprised this place has been recognized by Houston Press and even Men's Health (little known to the public). This place is small and no frills but very clean and the people are extremely nice and knowledgeable about cutting hair and shaving with a straight razor. Atmosphere is laid back and comfortable. Just like the other reviewers say, this is a real barber shop for the modern age.

Go see Jarrod. Gave me good advice on which beard would fit the shape of my face. Definitely going back for a haircut.

Still can't get over how good the service is for the price. Go check them out and don't forget to tip your barber.

This place is solid. Always worth the wait. Dont know what that frumpy bitch is complaining about since no one was there to tattoo her. She should go back to the suburbs an get a tribal butterfly tramp stamp with Chinese lettering. The staff has always been more than helpful and are masters at there craft. I have a feeling the artist wouldn't want to have dealt with the complainer. So don't let that one star review fool you, Big Kats is tops! The people and the work they put out.

I've been looking for a barber since my friend, who has cut my hair for years, has become less reliable and my need for fresh cuts has become more reliable. After running into the situation where i needed a cut late in the day on a Friday/Saturday (twice as a matter of fact) and not being able to find anyone I went to Yelp in a move of desperation. The first time resulted in complete failure, as I was too late to get in anywhere, but I did notice the listing for Kat's. I like hair cuts, I like tattoos. It only makes sense right? In fact, I'm surprised this isn't a more common combination. The second time I was in the right place with just enough time so I made a move.

This joint is in a little section of neartown or downtown, I'm not sure what to call it, that I kind of like. Not the douchey environment that is becoming all too common, but more like the Westheimer/Montrose area.

So I walk into a cozy room and am instantly engaged in conversation with one of the 2 barbers. Not the "Hi, we'll be right with you." type of convo, but the real kind of convo where you go back and forth for a couple minutes to get to know who you're dealing with (as he was cutting hair I might add).

Now it was fairly obvious that I was a little out of my element. This was more of a rocker type joint with vintage posters of classic hairstyles. I'm a fade and edge up kind of guy. Fortunately, the barber who greeted me took the time to find out what I wanted and suggested that I use the other barber because that was more his thing.

So on to "the edge up guy". From what I was told by someone who accompanied me this guy had a Houston Press award for best barber. I didn't see it but that's what I was told. I was pretty nervous because this tatted up punk rocker just didn't look to me like the kind of guy who would be nice on the fade. Then it occurred to me that you cut a lot of different types of hair in prison. Now I'm not saying that he's definitely been to prison, or that having been to prison means you are a bad person, all I am saying is that is what I found comfort in.

So the tatted up, punk rock, convict barber asked what I wanted. The first time I use a barber I usually just give loose guidelines so that I can see where he/she is at and to use as a baseline if I decide to come back. He said he understood what I wanted and went to work; and I mean work. This was probably the fastest haircut I've had in many, many, years. To give you an idea; I showed up after 4, probably 4:15, and was gone at 4:30. No big deal? What if I told you there was someone in front of me? What if I told you that the cut was superb? What if I told you that I got a straight razor edge up with some warm shaving cream? What if I told you that you could receive this type of service for only $15? Well I'm telling you all that.

This is my new barbershop and the tatted up, punk rock, convict is my new barber. 'Nough said. That reminds me... I need a cut.

Great place with friendly, experienced Barbers. I've lived in Houston for a year now and I was trying to find someone who could fix me up the way my old barber used to. I looked this place up online and saw on their site that Bart "specializes in shear cuts with clean tapers and razor shaves." That description alone sold me. I jumped in the car and headed over to see what they could do. Sure thing, after a short wait and a quick, but attentive, visit in the chair, I walked out of there with the haircut I wanted for a small sum of cash ($15!!!!). Bart lived up to his reputation.

I'm in Houston for a few weeks and found this cool spot. Great place for a buzzcut and a beard trim. The guy ahead of me got a real slick cut. Didn't wait very long, the guys are fast, friendly. they also offered water or a beer. Houston weather is too steamy so went for the water. Left pretty happy with my new cut. If you're looking for new barber, visit these guys.

So i went back to Houston for a couple of days on a business trip (I had previously lived there) and I tell my friend that I need a haircut. He tells me about this place called Kats that just opened up right next to the continental club. He said it was 50's themed and the service was excellent. He was right.

The place was set up just like an old school barber shop with a tattoo parlor above the shop. I already have a tattoo artist who does a majority of my work but not a regular barber. Good barbers are hard to come by these days. Everyone can cut hair but not everyone can sit you down, tell you, "I'm gonna make you look fabulous." And then actually do it.

I had to wait about half an hour even though there was only one person in front of me and two barbers, but after watching the detail and meticulous nature that both barbers handled the customers with I knew I was in good hands. They played rockabilly and some old music that I wasn't familiar with. The cut was finished with a hot lather and straight razor shave and I was more than happy. Everyone at work said I looked like a little boy with my new haircut. Considering I am about to turn 32 I will take that as a big compliment. I would recommend this place to anyone and already have told a few friends about it.

I had read a recent write-up on Big Kat's in http://CultureMap.com and decided to stop by and try them out. I'm forever looking for a good barber, and rarely finding anybody that seems to be able cut hair decently. I think I found my new go-to barber shop. Simply, this place rocks. Apart from having a really cool retro decor the barber, Bart Maloney, was friendly and knew what he was doing with the scissors. Admittedly I did have to wait a bit to get my cut but I did walk in 30 min before closing and the place was packed. He mentioned that they are getting more help very soon. But both myself and everyone else that had to wait didn't mind one bit. He took his time with my hair and paid attention to all the details. I was very happy with what I walked out with. I mentioned before the decor: 50's rockabilly with a touch of 21st century grunge. Some well used skateboards hung from the walls as did classic barber shop paraphernalia. Upstairs is the tattoo parlor, which sadly I didn't go and check out, and next door is the women's hair salon. If there's a downside it's finding parking. I had to do a couple of turns around the block before I found a metered parking spot. But it was definitely worth it. I will be back often!
