I want to make it clear that my mediocre experience is mainly my fault. It was just last December when I had only one tattoo and NO idea of what works and what doesn't work in tattooing. I have nine tattoos now that I have mainly gotten done at Greenpoint Tattoo Co., and am sad to say the only tattoo I have had done at North Star has now been covered up.
I was skating around downtown when I stumbled on this studio. Half-cocked, I went in and asked about a tattoo. I like surrealism, so I thought maybe a dripping clock would make for a cool tattoo. I didn't really want to get the tattoo done then and there, but Daniel Cotte talked me into it. He didn't pressure me, he is a really nice guy, I am just very impulsive.
Looking back, the tattoo seems very overpriced. It was palm-sized, and they asked $300 for it. I have gotten much bigger tattoos done in Greenpoint for about $250.
So, he did the dripping clock on my right shoulder. I should have stressed that I wanted it to look "tattoo-y," like almost a sailor version of the clock image. But what I got was what looked like almost a photograph of Salvidor Dali's "Persestencia de Memoria" that was way too small for the area that it was located.
Not fully realizing how bad the tattoo was at first, I called into make an appointment to get some quick Black Flag bars done, and they quoted me at $200. That is way too much, bars take about 15 minutes and should be quoted at shop minimum. That is exactly what happened when a fellow VICE intern recommended I go to Greenpoint Tattoo Co.
Two weeks later, I was freaking on the dripping clock. I was at the gym and I just couldn't stop looking at how awkward and silly it looked as a tattoo. As of now, I know that tattoos are tattoos and art is art, and good art doesn't always translate into a good tattoo. I now have nine tattoos and have dumped the ideology that a tattoo must have "meaning" behind it. Screw that, if you want a tattoo, just get a tattoo. Liking tattoos and having them is enough meaning. When people ask me what my tattoos mean I usually say, "nothing I just like them," which is the truth. If I feel like being a prick I might pull out a, "None of your business." Â All my stuff now is old-school American traditional tattoos and I love all of them. The clock was successfully covered up by a traditional eagle.
What is the worst is I love Cotte's work and would love to get a larger-scale piece from him in the future, but I'm embarrassed about getting his work covered up. I feel like it's just an asshole move to rub that in his face. So just to emphasize this one more time, the crap tattoo was MY fault due to a bad idea. The only thing Cotte is guilty of is not trying to talk me out of it (which the guys at Smith St. would have) and maybe overcharging me a little.
North Star is good for larger scale work, but if you are looking to just get a little guy I would hit the more street style shops, like Greenpoint or Smith St or Thicker than Water. The vibe could possibly be a little friendlier, what is nice about the aforementioned shops aside from the high quality traditional tattooing is the "hang out" vibe. They have similar atmospheres to good barber shops, it makes it fun. North Star is a very small space and quiet, a little stuffy even. Not a bad shop by a long shot, but certainly not one of my favorites.
My worry over a "new" tattoo artist inking up my man proved to be unfounded. Becca Roach did a fantastic job and gave him one of the best tattoos he has (if not THE best).
North Star Tattoo is a small, immaculate tattoo shop that really works hard to ensure that their customers have a positive experience. They use massage tables rather than the standard tattoo chairs. This is more comfortable for both the customer and for the artist. You don't have to uncomfortably twist in a million different directions in a structured chair in order for your artist to hit the right spot. I've been present for several of his tattoos and I can tell you that this is the most comfortable I've seen him. He can handle pain like no other but he seemed much more relaxed this time (given that this was a new artist for him and all). Becca gave him an amazing angel tattoo that she sketched for him based on some pictures that he sent to her. She really hit the mark. He is very pleased with the end result and so am I...and that's what really matters because I'm the one who has to look at him, right? :)
We highly recommend this shop.
Everything about my experience with North Star Tattoo was five stars.
I was a "walk-by" customer. Â The exterior gives off a warm, inviting, cool vibe. Â I was scouting for a studio to do my chest piece, my first large piece, which ended up taking two quick consultations and three sessions totalling four hours to complete. Â During the entire time, everyone I encountered was fabulous and friendly. Â The other artists, the receptionists, even the other customers! Â Atmosphere cannot be underrated here. Â Getting a tattoo hurts. Â So it's greatly comforting to have a nice chat or even soothing music in the background as you're enduring the process!
I ended up working with Becca Roach, whom I cannot recommend enough. Â Becca was patient and wonderful to work with. Â Her design was everything I had envisioned and even more. Â As an artist, she was amazing and the proof is in her beautiful product. Â She listened to my concerns and questions and did not hesitate to adjust her design until I was absolutely thrilled with the placement and tiny details, which was so fantastic! Â She gives off a calm, reassuring vibe, works quickly and efficiently, and made the whole painful process so much easier. Â She's some kind of magician, I tell you, because I healed so quickly and the pain afterwards was so minimal!
A sign on the wall of North Star Tattoo reads "Good Tattoos Aren't Cheap, And Cheap Tattoos Aren't Good." Â Here, you get everything you pay for. Â Friendly and personable service and beautifully designed and executed artwork. Â These people are the goddamn best at what they do. Â Tattoos are forever. Â Do yourself a favour and get yours at North Star.
I recently finished getting a full sleeve from Daniel Cotte and he did not disappoint. He is without a doubt a professional tattoo artist who has a keen eye to see the vision of the tattoo you are looking for. I came in with an idea and a few pictures and Daniel did the rest. He works fast but extremely clean and he is very laid back and down to earth . I could not be happier with how my sleeve turned out and will definitely be returning for more work in the future.
Review Source:Had my second tattoo done by Anna today, and what an amazing job she did.  She was super nice too.  I came in as a walk in, and they were able to take me a few hours from when I first popped in, and right when I got back, Anna drew up my tattoo - which was a small feather.  I wasn't able to watch (my friend did, as he was holding my hand the whole time!) but  was very happy with the result, as she was very detailed in what she did, especially the white shading.  The price was pretty reasonable (well, for city prices), as it was $200...Note that the place has a $100 non refundable minimum, and you should definitely bring cash, because if you charge it, there's a 10% surcharge.
Review Source:I've been getting tattooed by Daniel Cotte for a few years now and we are still working. Â I am really in love with his attention to detail and his patience with my constant thoughts and ideas about work. Â
He is the reason I get so many compliments.
The shop itself is super clean and friendly. Â You don't get that "I am not cool enough" feeling like you do in the rest of the LES. Â Everyone is so kind and helpful and fun to be around. Â It is a great environment to get work done.
I've been wanting to get a tattoo (my first one) for quite a while. This weekend I finally decided to do it and went to North Star because of all the great reviews on Yelp. I stopped by and was told that Becca Roach was available later in the day. I cannot say enough good things about Becca. She was incredibly professional and patient with me, answering all my newbie questions, calming my nerves (I was quite nervous) and very talkative (and funny!) while she was tattooing me. And best of all, I was thrilled with the outcome. My tattoo looks even better than I imagined. I'm already thinking about what I want to get next and I plan on going back to North Star and having Becca do it.
Review Source:I did a walk-in at North Star yesterday, and wanted to get tattooed by Anna Melo (I did some research on their website and felt her style was most similar to mine). Upon walking in, the receptionist, whose name I unfortunately forgot, was VERY friendly and helpful, and made me feel very comfortable. I showed Anna my design -- a paper crane with an intricate pattern -- and she immediately stenciled it out. After an hour of being tattooed, I couldn't be happier with the results.
Although the tattoo was a bit pricey, it was well worth it! A sign in their shop reads "Cheap tattoos aren't good, and good tattoo's aren't cheap." So true. North Star is definitely THE place to go to, and I can't wait to get my next one done by Anna! :-)
Daniel Cotté is the man. Â
I am thrilled with how my tattoo turned out. Â He's a great artist, and I'm sure he can handle anything you throw at him, but he's especially enthusiastic about aviation art.
Since I wanted a WWII fighter plane, I'm lucky that I ended up at North Star after visiting a few other shops. Â The folks at North Star are totally chill. Â I really felt like they would work with me, and really listen to me. Â Artists at other shops were sort of dismissive. Â
I'm so going back to Daniel if and when I decide on another tattoo.
I can't say enough good things about North Star Tattoo. Rodrigo Melo is a fantastic tattoo artist. He did 2 half-sleeves for me. Both tattoos were cover-ups from a time when I couldn't afford a great artist and didn't know better. Both pieces are beautiful works of art and I am honored to wear. I've recommended North Star others who have come to love it as much as I do.
Review Source:frist yelp review for me , not really my thing but i have to get it out there how good these guys are , I made an appointment to get a sleeve with rodigro melo after looking at some off his work on line ,The whole experience from start to finish was great , the girl on the front desk was very helpful with making session times work for me and him , and never had an attitude , rodigro did a excellent job on my arm exactly what i wanted , and he freehanded it on , special talent , Id say if you check out the dictionary and look for the definition off super cool you will find his name , you can see he loves what he does by the lack off conversation  , just puts on cool music and bangs it out, thx man
Review Source:Grew up around tattoos, artists, and shops. This places is as good as it gets. I've been tattooed by 3 of the 4 permanent artists who are there now and I've referred friends there. Everyone is awesome, the shop is fun, clean, and welcoming. The floor managers are friendly (which isn't always the case in shops). Rodrigo is word class and you'd be lucky to get an appointment with him - he specializes in Japanese back pieces that are so beautiful they made a book of them. His wife, Anna, is awesome. She's a phenomenal artist and cute as a button. And then there's Becca. She's beyond awesome. Patient and funny and talented and an absolute pleasure to work with. She did a quote for me and a large, original back piece for a friend and they're both beautiful. I will be going back here for all my tattoo needs while I'm in the city and I can't stress enough that you should too. Shop minimum is $100.
Review Source:Very nice receptionist. After having a bitchy experience at Dare Devil (screw them) I went to North Star and explained to them what i wanted and even though what i wanted was not doable, the girl was VERY nice and VERY helpful and gave her honest opinion. I felt so welcomed. I didn't get anything done that day but when i finally figure it out I'm definitely returning here.
NOW GO! Â (for good service)
After reading many reviews and researching lots of local shops- I ended up at North Star. I made the ride all the way down from CT , because, well, it's forever!
I was a walk-in appointment and felt very lucky to be able to work with Anna Melo. Of all the online portfolios I liked hers the best, I was coming to get some very old sanscrit characters. On the web she clearly displayed previous work of asian characters that made me feel very comfortable.
The Receptionist was great, warm, friendly, reassuring, etc. The process was very timely, and Anna has an excellent Touch. The ink turned out perfect and I highly recommend.
Got my first tattoo here this weekend and am in love! It was done by Dana, who was awesome and non-judgmental about a girl from westchester scared shitless from needles yet getting her first tattoo. He was so gentle and comforting, and I'm in love. If I ever get the balls to do it again, I would definitely come back here.
Review Source:So I came to yelp searching for a place to get my first (and only) tattoo and saw the highly favored North Star Tattoo. Â Figured I'd give them a try.
Decided on a humble that this would be the day I get the tattoo so I called early afternoon to see if someone would be available to see me. Â Got the okay from a gentleman (can't remember the name) that it would be okay to come later that evening when I got off from work. Â Was told that although they do take credit cards, they prefer cash. Allllrighty then....
After work had my friend meet me at the spot. Â Was told by the same gentleman that answered the phone, who is very friendly by the way, that Anna Melo would be assisting me. Â I brought a picture of the tatt I wanted and was told that some adjustments would have to be made to the tatt due to the size I wanted and the location of the tatt. Â No problem - I asked what type of adjustments and Anna began to tell me in not the most detailed way the adjustments. Â I asked if it'd be possible to see the kind of adjustments she was referring to and she asked me first if I would be getting the tattoo. Â I have to say I didn't care for her attitude at first, she seemed uninterested in explaining and showing me what kind of adjustments she'd be making. Â I answered that yes I was there to get a tattoo but I would like to actually see what I'm paying for before I pay for it. Â I wasn't asking for a perfect picture of the changes she'd be making just a general idea. Â In all fairness, I completely understand her not wanting to waste her time in drawing out a tatoo for someone that's not there to seriously get a tattoo, I just think her demeanor could've been a little better. Â Anyhow, she draws up the tatoo and it really wasn't much of a difference from the one I initially showed her so I agreed to go ahead and get the tatt. Â I left my ID with them to start the paperwork and ran to the bank to get the cash they preferred.
The shop is very clean and sanitary. Â During the actual tattoo process is when the mood seemed to lighten and she became more friendly and comforting. Â As I stated, it was my first tatoo and I was afraid and unnerved. Â Their policy is that you cannot have someone sit with you while you're getting your tatt but she was nice enough to allow my friend to come sit with me for support. Â Anna took her time and made sure that everything was how I wanted and continued to ask me if I was okay throughout the process, even offering me a squeezy ball to squeeze when the pain became too much. Â When all was done she was clear and thorough with the aftercare process and was sure to give me her business card in case I needed to come back for touch-ups or had any questions. Â
Though I feel we got off to a bit of a rocky start I left out of there a very happy customer. Â Their prices are reasonable and I LOVE MY TATTOO!!! Â I followed Anna's aftercare instructions to a tee and haven't had any issues whatsoever with my tatt. Â I would highly recommend them to anyone interested in getting a tattoo and would certainly go back to them if I were crazy enough to decide on getting a second tatt :o)
I woke up yesterday a tattoo "virgin" and ended the night with a beautiful daisy tattoo that reflected exactly what I have wanted for the past 10 years. A big kudos to Anna Melo, who was great with me throughout the process from start to finish. I met with her a few days ago for a consultation (free of charge) and shared with her some images of what I was looking for and where I wanted it. When I came in yesterday for the procedure, she showed me a couple of sketches, both of which embodied exactly what I had described to her. She was extremely professional throughout the process, explaining to me what she was doing and when and it went a lot quicker than I had initially thought. My best friend, who recently got a tattoo at another place, commented to me how much more clean and professional this shop was. Thanks Anna for a terrific job - I would recommend you and North Star Tattoo to anyone!
Review Source:I don't care for tattoos. But I accompanied my boyfriend to get some work done on his. Â The staff was friendly, they were very knowledgeable about how to best correct some issues with my boyfriend's tattoo (he had gotten it done at another place and his tattoo artist left the country before he could complete his chest piece/3/4 sleeve). Â Most of all they were VERY clean. They even covered the pillow in disposable linens and threw out the Sharpie they were using to draw the stencil. At the end, they wiped down everything with an antibacterial wipe, even the tattoo gun cord. Â I don't believe in paying people to stab me repeatedly and mark me for life with something that I could possibly grow tired of, but if I did, I would go to North Star.
Review Source:I must say that I was a bit concerned about finding a good place to get a tattoo here in NY. I'm from Brazil and there is cheaper than here and I already know the guys.
But I wanted a tattoo with a history so hard that I started checking the best places in town here on yelp and luckily I've found the North Star Tattoo, which had a better price than others I checked and gave confidence because the owner is a Brazilian, the rate on yelp is 5 and the artist who talked to me, Anna, was nice. So I gave it a try yesterday and so far so good.
The drawing was cool and got even better on the skin.
If you want to get a tattoo you should at least have a consultation with these guys. Good luck!
I'm so glad I had the pleasure of choosing North Star for my first tattoo - a large side piece of a tall ship that was bound to be very painful. I researched a few other nearby parlors only to find that when I went in for consultations, one outright turned me away, one has a really weird vibe, and one quoted a ridiculous price. The second I went into north star I was hooked. As a novice, getting a tattoo in the east village is usually a really uncomfortable experience due to the outright pretension in most of the shops. North Star, on the other hand, is fantastic. Clean and friendly, they have some really rad people working there. My artist, Becca Roach, actually took time to talk to me during my consultation, discussing different styles and asking me questions regarding the reference photo I brought so she could do further research. The actual day of the outline, she kept me comfortable during the process, making one of the most painful and most difficult places you can get a tattoo actually bearable. The healing process was effortless - a mark of a really great job. No scabbing, no bleeding, no bruising (which is common on the ribs) no problems. I love North Star and can't wait to go back for more sessions. Tattoos are art. And Becca's definitely an artist.
Review Source:Had some work done there yesterday by a visiting artist named Nico. Everyone there, from Cassie at the front desk to the other patrons, was extremely nice. They are very clean, very professional and very well-organized. On top of that, the tattoo turned out great.
I typically don't write Yelp reviews but these guys deserve a thumbs up.
I woke up this morning and after a day at work felt like I needed some new ink. I searched yelp and found out about this place and its completely worth the 5 stars. Anne Melo is awesome! I got the tattoo I've always wanted we made me feel comfortable as we swapped a few stories. The shop is beautiful, clean, and everyone seemed super friendly. I'll definitely be going back to North Star and to Anna for my next tattoo. I think I finally found my shop :)
Review Source:Nothing but wonderful things to say about North Star. I walked in one day while I was in the village to get my second tattoo. I spoke with someone briefly, who consulted one of the artists about the design I wanted. Unfortunately, they were booked for the day, so I was told to call before coming the next day to be sure there was availability. As luck had it, there was. I showed my idea to Anna and discussed the modifications I wanted to it. She sketched out exactly what I wanted, addressed all my concerns, and reminded me that it had to be something I loved first and foremost. From there, it was a piece of cake. My tattoo was completed in 20 minutes time. It was a great environment, very clean and professional but laid back. I'd definitely recommend North Star and intend on going back again soon!
Review Source:Becca Roach is a goddess. Literally as good as it gets in NYC.
She's funny, kind, and one hell of an artist. I'm so pleased that I chose her this time, for an owl on my forearm, and will keep going back for every piece from now on.
The shop is clean, VERY well run, and everyone is extremely warm and friendly. Love it. Love Becca. Go see her immediately.
I have to agree with Mike. David Sena is an amazingly talented tattoo artist. He and everyone in the shop made me feel very comfortable. David did a Kirin and peony piece on my ribcage and it went so smooth and turned out so beautiful. It isn't quite finished but I LOVE it. I only wish the shop was in San Francisco. Now I have another excuse to come to New York. Thank You David and Daniel and Rodrigo for making this such a positive experience!
Review Source:Daniel did a great job and he was pleasant to work with (even tho he is a Red Wings fan). Clean shop, good pricing for NYC, and they follow up consolations thoroughly. If I ever find myself in Manhattan again, I will go out of my way to get tattoo'd by Daniel again.
Keep up the great work, guys!
I agree with all of the previous reviews on here, I had overall a great experience at North Star. Becca Roach, who did my tattoo, did an awesome job, she's a great artist and was cool with me taking breaks if I wanted as it was in a pretty painful spot. Everyone else at the shop was friendly as well. I highly recommend this place if you want a quality piece in New York for a decent price.
Review Source:After much online research (6 months) I came
across North Star Tattoo. There were so many
great reviews for David Sena I knew I found
the right place! Turned out David was not avail-
able the two days I was in town so I chose to
go with Becca Roach.
Becca was great! There was a mix up with my
appointment but she fit me in anyway, with
Rodrigo's help ( they are all great).
I had emailed a photo of what I wanted, both
she & Rodrigo made suggestions but ultimately
she left the decision to me. I had Becca do
a version of Kwan Yin (female Buddha) on
The top of my right foot. It is absolutely
BEAUTIFUL!!!
Would not hesitate to return & would recommend
to anyone serious about wanting a great tattoo
@ an awesome price!
David Sena is a brilliant fine-artist as well as an amazing tattoo artist. He is super talented. I have had a lot of work done by David and each piece is beautiful. The place is intimate; all the guys and gal (Becca) are terrific. Super friendly, supportive and chill.
I love this place. I would never get tattooed anywhere else or by anyone else. Sena ROCKS!
Mike Berkley, L.Ac.
This place is awesome. Everyone was more than cool, kind, informative, and nice as fuck, which is always greatly appreciated on my part.
Price is decent, $100 minimum. They charge by the piece and not the hour. Rodrigo the owner, drafted up two pieces I wanted and banged them out within an hour. They were patient and let me take my time considering fonts and designs.
They take walk-ins. Great array of artists with years of experience. Felt mad taken care and really enjoyed the experience.
I don't know if you guys have heard, but tattoos are permanent.
So I took my time finding the right artist. For, no joke, over 2 years, I knew the tattoo I wanted. I met with a couple other artists, and could tell they weren't seeing the same idea I was. Daniel Cotte nailed it.
He took the basic design I wanted and made it fit, in a very cool way, around an existing tattoo. He made a couple of changes to the design itself and the background that really perfected the design. And, most importantly, he executed it flawlessly over two sessions.
I can't recommend Daniel and North Star highly enough...great studio, great talent, friendly people. It's clear Daniel cares about creating the best possible tattoo for you, and he's conscious of the pain you're going through too. As an added bonus, he's a pretty cool guy to talk to, since you're "stuck" with him for several hours anyway!
Becca did my second tattoo about a month ago and it is AMAZING. She did such a great job with the detail and shading not to mention was super patient with all the photos and inspiration i sent over as well as tweaks to the design day of. Â I totally love how it came out and she was super fun to hang with for the 2 hours it took to do. Â (My photo will be posted above soon if it hasn't been already its the ornate fleur de lis :-)
Review Source:So my brother and I went last minute tat hunting for a fairly small piece on our wrists and after jumping from place to place I used Yelp to help me locate North Star. After having such uncomfortable experiences elsewhere in getting just a quote/consultation, we were prepared for the worse. It was very easy to find and upon entering, we were greeted by an incredibly friendly receptionist. He did everything he could in his power so we can be seen and in the meantime, he was helping us decipher how the tat would look since we are both very uncreative. We had to wait a few hours but since we were in the village, we entertained ourselves with what was around.
Daniel Cotte serviced us and he was so friggin nice to us. He accommodated us on a comfy cot just in case we passed out (so unnecessary since tats would be on the  wrists, but sooo considerate!) Very professional, talented and the ambiance of the place is more than welcoming.
There were other people there getting inked and our nerves were calmed by talking to them and I believe the one many here talk about was there, Dave Sena, because he was inking this enormous Japanese piece on this guys body. My bro and I were in awe of his talent. He looks just like Ray Romano too hehe. Anyway, I really liked this place and would definitely return.
Dave Sena @ North Star is the Man! His work is amazing. Back here in Jersey everyone looks at my arm and just goes "Whoa, where did you get that?!" Comfortable atmosphere and really goes does a great job. Japanese work is amazing. I'm only 6 hours into my first one and can't wait to plan the other arm. Â
*I can't believe some jacka$$ on here gave it one star because they went down there on a SUNDAY without calling and it was closed!!! Are you kidding me, you gonna get a tattoo based on whose sitting around on a sunday with nothing better to do? My soonest appointments with Sena are usually about 4 months out. Its really cool you gave it that rank without even walking in the place. your stupid ... lol
Me & my boyfriend live in Boston, but anytime we want a tattoo we take a bus out to nyc to drop in North Star. After walking around & stopping in all the other bogus tattoo shops in the area, we ran across North Star.. the diamond in the rough. Daniel Cotte stayed late to tattoo us, did a dope job & we've been going back to see him since. Chill atmosphere with cool artists... not your typical tattoo shop full of douchebags (like others around the 'hood) We've seen nothing but great work come out of there each time we've been in, & reasonably priced for the great work they spit out. Ask for Daniel... the rest of new york knows about his awesome tattoos so he gets pretty booked up. So its best to call ahead & schedule a time with him. totallyy worth it.
Review Source:Went to this place on a SUNDAY at 5pm. Was it open? Nope. Was there a sign that said why it wasn't open? Nope. On yelp it clearly said it was open, but was it? Nope. What a fking waste of my time. I was set out on getting my tattoo done here. Now, I'm not so sure. I can't even rely on the place to be open. Wooster St Social Club will just have to do. Now I don't even mind paying extra cause obviously it will be open when it says it is. So sad
Review Source:Had an oooold tattoo I wanted to cover and met with Daniel with my proposed new tattoo. He proposed some modifications that I liked and he did the tattoo yesterday. I'm extremely pleased with the result which is better than I hoped and has incredible color and detail. The value I received far exceeds the competitive price I paid. When I do another tattoo it will be with Daniel
Review Source:Disclaimer: I didn't have any work done here.
I had a consultation here with Becca Roach, and she was really rude to me. She told me the design was too fine, the placement was bad, that I should consider something else entirely or - "at the very least" - make it bigger and change the placement. I later went elsewhere and no problem getting exactly what I wanted.
As a disclaimer, I should mention that I didn't get any work done here, but went with a good friend who was getting her first tattoo, and was very nervous, and I have 4 of them myself so understand the nuances of good shops.
From start to finish, the artists at North Star were attentive, reassuring, and confident in every interaction we had. From recommending to her that she come in for a consultation since it was her first time, to explaining the difference in countless amounts of texts and colors to her, to being super-attentive as she actually had it done, it was an amazing experience. I have run into my fair share of  disdain from "unless-you-have a full sleeve you are a pansy and not really tattooed" people, but we felt nothing but welcome here, and they seemed to share in our excitement for the new ink!
I can't recommend this place highly enough. The technical detail Daniel Cotte was capable of was so precise and is not shared by many other artists. Prices are definitely reasonable as well. Overall just a brilliant, brilliant experience.
This was my first tattoo, so I visited several spots and looked at about hundreds of galleries of different artists, and I can honestly and completely say that the guys at Northstar are the greatest! Hendrix was one of the coolest guys, and he wasn't even one of the artists! The artists were the nicest people, you could tell that they love what they do, and have a passion for not only their craft, but really respect everyone who comes into their shop. I was lucky enough, and so grateful, to have Rodrigo do my piece. I had a few ideas in mind, and came in with some photos and an idea of what I wanted to see what we could do. Rodrigo came up with such an amazing tattoo; he made my tattoo even more personal, even more original. I was practically speechless when I first saw it and realized it was gonna be on me pretty soon. The tattoo took about 3-4 hours, it takes up my chest and is from my nipple up to my shoulder. It wasn't as expensive as I expected, but then again I was so happy with it, I would have probably paid even more for the tattoo. I would recommend anyone and everyone to go to Northstar. Rodrigo is such an amazing artist. I'm already planning my next tattoo which i'm looking to get at the end of the year. Thanks Rodrigo, thanks Northstar!
Review Source:Northstar was recommended to me by a friend. I've always wanted a tattoo, but never found the right place and person to provide it until now. Rodrigo was HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and he did not disappoint. My first tattoo experience was amazing, calming and relaxing. Rodrigo is a true artist, friendly, knowledgeable and talented. He helped me decide on what I wanted, discussed my options for color and imagery and style. During the process he was personable and friendly and took my mind away from the irritation and pain  that  comes from getting a tattoo. The entire crew of artists and staff that work there are all extremely friendly and talented. If you are new to tattoos or a veteran I suggest you stop by Northstar and checkout what's going on there, because you will not leave without a tattoo or be disappointed. Because my first one turned out so well...YES I'M READY FOR THE NEXT ONE!!!
Review Source:Highly Recommended! as good as it gets in NYC!
I am a tattoo collector for many years and
this is the best place I have been so far.
Serious inkwork , I got there after seeing someones arms and
I knew this was the tattoo artist that  I wanted to work on a nice piece basically a  Japanese floral with lots of skin and
Rodrigo  did an amaazing job I  couldn't be happier!
It's not cheapest place, but you definitely get what you pay for. I got a 3/4 sleeve from David Sena plus a partial cover up and the design and quality of the work is outstanding. The artists are welcoming and you can see that they are excited about the work they are doing and have fun working with customers on the design, which I think is what you want if you are planning to get a large tattoo.
If you are looking for large modern primitive or Japanese style pieces David is definitely the guy to go to.
I came here yesterday after wanting a certain tattoo for months. Once I decided where on my body I wanted it the search for the perfect place began.
I picked North Star out of all the places on yelp based on all the positive reviews. I called a few hours ahead and told them what it was that I wanted and where and they said it wouldn't be a problem getting it done on the spot.
When I walked in the place was extremely clean and really nice looking. It wasn't just walls and walls of tattoo books. Everyone was really cool and professional.
Once we decided on the size and the placement  Daniel got to work. It was done in under an hour and he went over it again after cleaning it to make sure he didn't miss anything. Then he gave me the after care instructions, took some photos and I was done.
I would def get my next tattoo there. Without a doubt!
true artists!
the artists at northstar are not only super talented, they are super cool too. the vibe of the shop is very chill and relaxed with lots of great art on the walls to check out. i had been wanting my piece for a long time and just needed to find the right artist. i had seen david sena's work before on a couple different friends and knew he would be the person to collaborate with. i loved his ideas and color suggestions and my ink turned out amazing; i'm so happy with it. david is detailed and fast, light on his touch  and fun to chat with. when it was all done, it healed beautifully. didn't think i would say this, but perhaps a second piece? if final answer is yes, i will definitely be going back to david.
This was my first tattoo and the whole experience was amazing!! I was really worried about finding a clean/hygienic place in the city because there are just so many around.  I randomly found this place on my way home from a bar, googled it at home, read reviews on yelp and called them to check it out.  They offer free consultation, and when I went in for the consultation, I ended up getting mine done then.  My tattoo artist was DANIEL COTTE, he does a  fantastic job with fonts.  I talked to him for maybe about 10 minutes asking him a bunch of questions about the whole process and designs.  He answered my questions thoroughly and really made me feel comfortable.  I brought in sample fonts to show him, but I ended up having him design one for me and I love it!  Daniel asked me to come back within a week so he can check how it's healing and stuff, so after care is good too.  I would definitely recommend to first-timers, since this my only experience.  Initially when we decided on a price for my tattoo, I thought it was a little expensive, but really I think it's totally worth it and that it was a good price for the entire experience -- the tattoo, consultation, his care, meticulousness, everything!
I read about North Star Tattoo on Yelp, and now I made an account on Yelp after getting my tattoo specifically to leave a good review!
Top of the line
I am going to make this short and sweet. I have had a good number of tattoo's done over the years, but this is HANDS DOWN the best place I have ever had one done.
I had the privilege of booking an appointment with David Sena. I had to make my appointment about 3 months in advance and place a deposit of $100 but it was worth the wait. I had a full sleeve done which also branches onto my chest. I had discussed what I wanted with David over the previous weeks and he decided to start off with a samurai on my right bicep. It took about 2 1/2 to 3 hours for him to tattoo the outline on my arm. The detail is amazing and what even amazed me more is that the tattoo itself barely bled and had no soreness of the days to follow.
Every other time I previously have had a tattoo done, there was bleeding, bruising and soreness, but not this time.
I have 3 more sessions over the next two months and I will not be getting any future tattoo's anywhere else.
The shop itself is very clean and the staff is very relaxed.
HIGHLY recommended
I got my first tattoo at North Star. I am not from the east coast and was visiting so this was sort of a gamble. But it turned out really good. They not only designed my tattoo but also did a great job making it . It was behind my ear which is a difficult spot to work with but the tattoo artist did an excellent job.
Review Source:Last year, I got my first ever tattoo. I got it done at North Star because I liked their work and they were just down the block from my office. The tattoo design was VERY simple, but even so, they asked me to look through the portfolios and pick an artist that way - something that I took as a great sign. Ralph was awesome and knocked it out for me in less than 40 minutes. There was a shop minimum, but I was totally fine with that, as I knew it was coming.
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to celebrate my thirtieth birthday with a new, larger tattoo. A close friend had come to town, and we were going to get inked together. I chose Su Houston, based on the type of tattoo I was looking for. She looked over my reference photos (I wanted a magnolia), and worked calmly and carefully with me to get a design that would work. She talked me through color choices, sizing and placement.
The tattoo took a little under three hours, and was as easy as it could be, considering. The shop was fine with my friends sitting nearby and keeping my attention focused on them, and everyone milled around, chatting. Sometime in the first hour, my friend's tattoo was completed, and she joined us for the sitting around, chatting.
I am thrilled with my tat - the colors are beautiful and the placement is perfect. And I have Su, and North Star, to thank for not rushing me through any part of the process or making me feel as though any of my questions or concerns were silly.
All told, I'm a big fan of this place. Everyone is friendly and capable, and their work is amazing. I would (and have) recommend this shop to anyone.
Great shop, amazing artists, down to earth cool, friendly folks.
They are known for their large custom work and even though I only got a small outline piece the detail is excellent, it's clean and I get complements all the time. I don't recommend small here, you'd only be selling yourself short.
I don't care what anyone says - tattoos hurt like a mofo. They really do. I mean you're essentially being stabbed with a needle over and over and over again. On the same spot. Over and over and over again.
However, I like tattoos. No, wait, I'm a burgeoning junkie actually.
And that is why I like to get tattooed by David Sena. He has this light hand on him that makes the pain, well, less painful. Not to mention he's super friendly and actually works with your ideas to come out with something incredibly beautiful. Awesome.
The shop itself is great - bright, clean with a sense of calm about it that only makes for a really untroubled experience. All the equipment used is sterile, the ink quality is very high (which makes for a lasting tattoo as opposed to one that fades over a year or two) and all the other artists are really friendly as well.
My tattoos usually take about 2-3 hours, so if I am going to be in a world of hurt, I want to be that way in a place I am comfortable in. That makes sense, right?*
Definitely come here if you want a quality piece of art and a great overall experience.
As good as it gets people!
*no, I am not into *that* kind of pain. Sheesh!
I was very lucky to come across David Sena years ago when he was at the very highly regarded "Rising Dragon" studio on 23rd street. David was referred to me, and I did some research on his work. He's won tons of awards for his amazing tattoos. Over the years he has done all 4 of my tats. I have a few Japanese pieces (2 large), and I am certain that he is one of the best in the city.
I am constantly being complimented on my ink - by people who are knowledgeable about tattoos which really means a lot. The small lotus I have on my foot is over 4 years old and is still absolutely gorgeous. I get endless compliments from random people on the street.
David is highly experienced and will tell you what he thinks will "work", which is important in a tattoo artist, because certain designs won't necessarily look the best as a tattoo.
His style is crisp, bold, and vibrant, and they age very very well. He also does very accurate/graphic line work.
If you can get an appointment, you will NOT be disappointed!
GORGEOUS work.
Just got inked here last month. Â Becca Roach did the work and I am THRILLED with the outcome. Â I brought some photos to work from and she put together a great design that was beyond anything I had imagined. Â I'm also very pleased with the placement of artwork on my body. Â It took a few tries but fits so nicely. Â Sitting in her chair was a great experience as well. I intend to go back for more work.
