Kat is one of my favorite artists in Houston. She works extremely hard to make sure you leave with the perfect tattoo even though it might not be what you initially had in mind. She's kind about it, too. Some people will just say no but Kat patiently explains why which is so helpful. Her customer service is amazing and art is her passion and it shows.

Totally unprofessional. I went in for a consult one day, surprised to find it was someone's garage and I waited outside for awhile before someone let me in. Someone working there interrupted my consult and I was kept waiting for a long time. I was a bit put off, but the art looked good and the studio seemed clean, perhaps not as clean as I'd like but sterile instruments. However, the work being done was pretty average. I had a very personal design in mind, and the day of the work was important to me. I got flaked on an appointment I made the day of the appointment, which was annoying when I had planned my week around that. I decided to go somewhere more professional and they agreed to return my deposit. I have yet to have my deposit returned and it's been about a month since then. I'd pass if I were you.

First off - it's worth nothing that the shop is located on the same lot as a house.  It's in the garage behind a wooden gate on the driveway - just give Brett or Kat a call and they'll let you in.  The first time I stopped by for a visit/consultation, this confused me!

Second, and I assume the main reason people read these reviews - the quality of work was fantastic.  Line work and shading is great and atmosphere is very professional.  I will go into more details later in the review.

I received my third tattoo on my mid-upper back from Brett in January.  I cannot speak highly enough of how professional and friendly both Brett and Kat are.  When you're there, they make you feel like they've known you for quite some time and it's easy to talk to them about what you want and what ideas you have.

I went to Brett with an idea of what I wanted but I was unsure about what size and what design.  I came to Brett with about 5-6 pictures of what I was leaning towards and asked his opinion.  He wants to cater to you and wants it to be what you want, but he offered me a confident opinion, one I'm very glad to have received.

The shop itself is a very comfortable place and the ambiance, as I've described everything thus far, is very friendly.  Brett is very easy to get along with.

Getting to the main reason you should give this place a shot, though, is that his work will leave you very happy you chose him.  I went to Brett because my girlfriend received a tattoo from him and it looked really good.  She chose him after looking through many artists and ultimately really liked his shading.  Right before I got my tattoo from him (outline for first session, need to set up the shading session soon), he finished the shading on my girlfriend's tattoo.  It came out very detailed and very vibrant.  She didn't know what color scheme she wanted and asked his opinion.  He just did his thing leaving her very glad she deferred to his opinion.  As I mentioned previously, he wants to do the tattoo the way you want it and will not pressure you into getting it done in a way you don't want to, but if you're at a loss of how to proceed, his experience and knowledge of the craft won't leave you disappointed.

Oh and if a friend comes along while you get your tattoo, it's a really chill place to hang out with a lot of reading material and some great conversation to be had.

Two of my tattoos are by Kat, but I'll recommend her the most for the one that she didn't do.

After seeing her portfolio, I knew I wanted Kat to tattoo me.  I came to her with an idea that had been percolating in my head for a few years, but I wasn't quite sure how to execute it.  We scheduled an appointment, but when I got there, she explained that she was terribly sorry, but she just couldn't do the tattoo.  She'd consulted with a few other artists, and no one could come up with a way to do what I wanted and have it look good.  What I wanted would have ended up looking like something else or, worse, cartoony. She showed me a few of the technical reasons why the tattoo wouldn't work, and I knew that she was right.

We talked a little more about what I wanted and why I wanted it and what I liked, and she worked with me to come up with another idea.  We consulted a few times, and she added some things after a few suggestions.   And I LOVE it so much. It's perfect on my body, it was designed just for me, and it looks fantastic.

Later, when I wanted another piece for my shoulder blade, I put together a pinterest board of various ideas, and she worked off of that to come up with a beautiful design that I love.

Both of my tattoos are very colorful, and I enjoyed the process of getting them immensely.  They've also held up pretty well. The first is about a year and a half old, and still looks great. The second is eight months old and looks brand new.

I was really impressed by Kat's work ethic and her willingness to hold her position to ensure that I had the very best work possible.  I suppose she could have gone ahead and done the bad idea tattoo, but it was important to her that my tattoo look great. And that's what you really want in a tattoo artist.

I spent a lot of time searching for the right person and place to get some ink done. I got in contact with Kat, and set up a consultation to go see her. She spent 45 minutes talking to me and picking my brain so that she could convey my image, and did not even charge me. Through continued communication, in her downtime nonetheless, she put together something truly special to me, and the work has begun. I cannot express enough gratitude towards her work, professionalism, and ethic. She is amazing.

If you are contemplating getting tattooed, please do yourself justice and get in touch with Kat at Workhorse Tattoo Company, you won't be disappointed. As honored as I am for what Kat has done, she was also proud enough to show off my tattoo to her friends and acquaintances. That also showed me how much pride she takes in her work and clientele.

There are tons of choices out there these days for body art, but it does not get any better than this!

I got my first--and probably last and only--tattoo with Kat, and she was AMAZING.  First of all, I did a ton of research all up and down Montrose to find someone who was willing to do a bluebonnet as small as I wanted. Most artists tried to talk me into a much bigger piece, or said it would just look like a blob. Kat drew something up for me for free, and it was gorgeous.  I get a million compliments.

Even more important for a self-conscious first-timer, Kat made me feel totally comfortable, and my two friends holding my hand didn't phase her even a little tiny bit.  She was amazing in every respect, and even fielded panicked late-night texts from me the next day when a little ink came up.

I can't recommend her highly enough, both on her own merits and in comparison to everyone else I talked to. My tattoo was not expensive for the quality of the work, and if I ever want  another one, Kat is 100% where I'll go, even though I live thousands of miles away.

I've been frequentling Gaslight Gallery for my tattoo needs for the past three years.  During that time, I've referred several others--both friends and complete strangers--to that place because I'm downright evangelical about Kat Adlerz' work.  However, when Kat left to open her own private studio, it was a no-brainer as to where my loyalties lay.

I've been seeing Kat since 2009.  Her amazing color work won my heart as soon as I saw her portfolio, and I'd venture to say she's an even better artist now than she was when she first tattooed me.  What started out as a simple floral piece has blossomed into a half-sleeve with plans for additions after we're done.  I'm currently on hour 11, and I know I'll have to have at least one more sitting before we're done with this phase, but every time I walk in I leave utterly dumbfounded at her skill.  She's done things with ink and skin that I never thought possible.  I get compliments almost every time I step out of the house thanks to her amazing work.

The shop itself is a converted studio apartment in the back of a house on Peden Street, near Cecil's and that area of W. Gray.  If you visited Kat back when she was at Gaslight Gallery, you'll be happy to know she isn't stuck into a tiny closet any more.  There's plenty of room for her bench and a new chair, and an adjoining patio area for stretching out during breaks in the tattooing process.  It's the perfect amount of space for Kat and her apprentice, and as a result I can already tell being in business for herself really suits Kat.  The name of the shop suits her perfectly because Kat really is one of the hardest working women I know.

Available by appointment only, and you should be respectful of the neighbors while you're there.  This isn't the kind of place where you can stroll in and pick something off the wall.  Kat's a real artist, and if you don't believe me, I'll happily offer my right arm as literal proof.

While Yelp's glacial update process grinds away in the background, here's Kat's number: 832.594.6907
