Don't bother calling to make an appointment. I did, and when I got there they didn't have me on the books! So I am still like OK well whats up? Bobby the guy I have/had the appointment with told me well I have another person before you. Even though I have/had that time slot. And it would be at least 2 hours! Nope! Ain't wasting any more of my time. Save your self the headache and either see another person or place.
Review Source:Best place to go to for tattoos! I had a surprise tattoo given to me for my birthday a few years ago and I can't wait to go here to have them see what can be done with there amazing work. I've gotten two big pieces from here done and I totally would recommend this place in a heart beat.
Review Source:These guys are true professionals. Â The guys are nice, but not fake-friendly like they work at Wal-Mart or something. Â Steve is a laid back guy that doesn't bother you with a lot of jibber-jabber while he tattoos, and his traditional style artwork is some of the best in the biz. Â He drew a great forearm piece for me that I love, and I am a couple dozen hours into a full backpiece with him as well. Â Bobby has also done a quality piece on my right arm. Â The shop is pretty no-bullshit, so if you're looking to get pierced, or to bicker about price for your dandelion turning into birds tattoo, look elsewhere. Â This is an old-school street shop that does custom work on demand. Â The people who come here regularly are people like myself who are true tattoo enthusiasts. Â A constant cast of interesting characters is coming and going while you're here. Â I'm proud to count Rock of Ages among my preferred tattoo shops in all of the United States. Â You will not ever be disappointed with any work you get done here.
Review Source:I decided to get a small tattoo while visiting Austin. Â I selected this studio because of it's cool name, and also Yelp reviews. Â I got my tattoo right before catching my flight out of town. Â Bobby was ready and set up when I got there-it took less than an hour, and he said if I needed touch ups to come on back. Â (But I live in VA, so that is not going to happen).
I got a small flower on my toe.  I recently had a simpler tattoo on my other toe, which was really painful (but quick).  This one is larger, has way  more detail and colors, and hurt much less.
I was in town for work and decided to hit up Rock of Ages because of all of the great things I've heard about it.  I got my tattoo from Bobby Padron and  I couldn't be anymore happy about it.  I brought in somewhat of a difficult walk in and he nailed it.  He actually made it ten times better than the picture I brought in.  Seriously he is a badass artist and I highly recommend him for any of your work (walkin or planned).  Everything was super clean and professional.  Thank you Bobby Padron, can't wait to visit and get some work from you again!
Review Source:This experience was absolute first class! I was referred to Steve by my sister and her husband who had been to him for their tattoos. My sister got a half sleeve and my brother-in-law got a cover-up half sleeve. I got a cover-up quarter sleeve, and I couldn't have been happier with the experience. All the guys are really great, and are just as much into music as the art they put on people. I recommend this place to all of my friends and do the same to everyone else!
Review Source:So you're thinking about getting a tattoo for the very first time, but you're nervous as hell, what to do? The answer is simple, Rock of Ages! A friend referred me to Steve Byrne although several other friends have also been to Tony, offering up great praise. I emailed Steve and got a professional, prompt reply. The big thing with Steve is the fact that he's just a really cool guy, very easy to talk to. He really got into the concept I was trying to bring to life.
The night before I was VERY nervous, like I almost cancelled, had the email written up and everything. But after talking to some friends, I decided to go for it. Come to find out, Im kind of a wimp. There were moments it was rather uncomfortable, but Steve was there with me every step of the way, it really felt like that, like he helped me get through the whole thing. As well, his artistry is fantastic! I got a Kuboko version of the masks of comedy and tragedy and he nailed it. Plus he had great advice about other elements of the design that I ended up not doing and as a result. He saved me a lot of heartache through his advice, IE: I didnt end up with something permanent that I would regret and what I did end up with, I LOVE! Like I said, if you're thinking about getting a tatt for the first time, Rock of Ages, Steve or Tony is the way to go.
Wish I could write a review of their work, but the guy was so rude to me when I went in there that I walked out and won't go back. Â Went in there with my boyfriend because I want to have a small fixer job done and he wants a new tat. Â But once the guy found out how big (expensive) a piece my bf wants he couldn't possibly have been less interested in talking to me or trying to help me out. What he didn't realize was that this was totally transparent to my bf and they lost out on doing a big piece. Â If only the guy had been smart enough to be just as nice to me. Â Oh, and BTW, we went to Southside immediately after, were both treated with respect, and they quoted my bf way less. Â Give you one guess who'll be getting our business...
Review Source:Steve Byrne and All the guys that I have ever met in my many trips to Rock of ages have always been the most gentalemanly group of men EVER! Not to mention The Amazing artwork that come out af everyone there, Steve has become one of my favorite artist to be tattoed by, I cant wait to continue going to him for beautification of my body. It is a rare experience to find an artist that truly understands what you want with few words. This is why Steve is Amazing, And I would never want to forget the glue that holds them together Bobby ! You help make that shop friendly and smooth running. I hope anyone who is thinking of getting tatooed in Austin Please go and give your skin to this amzing group of artist's
Review Source:After having a traumatic experience happen to me, I decided to commemorate it with a tattoo. I always knew I wanted a tattoo since I was about 16, and after YEARS of debating what I wanted (I was totally gonna tramp stamp a playboy bunny...) and then having an epiphany of where I wanted my tattoo and how I wanted it placed... I asked my uncle, who has a half sleeve, where I should go. The first place he told me was Rock of Ages. He said they were all super professional and amazing artists. I went on an adventure to check out prices for various tattoo places, and this was the first place I stopped. With my tattoo in hand (photo on my phone) I showed the guy, I have no idea who, just someone with a British accent, and he said he would do it within my budget of $120. Not only is my tattoo huge, and on my foot, its beautifully done and not a playboy bunny.
If anybody could tell me WHO my artist was, I would love to know because I will be coming back soon for another piece.
I recently started going to Rock of Ages and getting tattooed by an awesome upcoming artist named Bobby. He is a fantastic artist and an even better guy. He's nice, professional and above all he's in a price range that I can afford. Everything I've had done by him has healed beautifully and turned out looking great. The beauty of working with Bobby is he takes the time to perfect his work and doesn't rush the process. I highly recommend him and I plan to continue to have wonderful work done by him.
Review Source:I had a previous tattoo done by a twacked out dude in Killeen, TX of music notes down my side and he had scared a spot on my hip and tried to talk me out of it because it was a sensitive spot , I should of took that as a sign
As an "Welcome to Austin." gift to myself I decided to get it added on to and fixed. I was recommended to Hector Fong (which no longer works there-I got the tattoo about 3 years ago) and he was super chill and was so awesome. He drew up some roses to go around my music notes and he threw in his own twist(all black and grey). He even asked if I wanted to take a break and finish another day but I just wanted to get all done in one sitting.
He was super gentle and made me feel comfortable and everyone in the shop is chill and don't deal with bullshit.
I recommend them to the max and I hear nothing but good things and have seen nothing but good work come out of that shop.
May have to wait months(or more) but it's worth it.
I've been collecting tattoos for sixteen years now. Â For most of that time, I would go to a different tattoo artist for each new tattoo, kind of like collecting stickers from friends in elementary school. Â But these stickers don't wash off.
When I decided to end my career and never have a real job again, I headed to Rock of Ages, to Tony, for knuckle tattoos. Â
We spoke about the placement, and even though my arms are covered in tattoos, he wanted me to be aware that I can't hide knuckle tattoos, if needed. Â I went ahead with it, and he did a perfect job. Â He was chatty, and funny, and I felt quite comfortable with him. Â
Soon, I will head back to Tony at Rock of Ages so he can tattoo my neck. Â Nothing says "classy lady : gave up on life" than a prison script neck tattoo. Â And I can't wait!
I couldn't have asked for a better shop and artist to do my first tattoo. I popped in on a Tuesday to talk to Steve about my idea and he was able to get me in that Sunday. He seemed genuinely interested and excited about my idea. No one there gave off any negative vibes since I hadn't had any work done before so I never felt intimidated or uncomfortable at all. The shop was very clean, although it was smaller than other shops I have been in before. My tattoo took about two hours and Steve was friendly the whole time. Â One of the other guys in the shop even bought me a Coke when I started feeling tired and light-headed. The tattoo itself turned out even better than I expected! I will definitely be going back to Steve at Rock of Ages.
FYI - They only take cash and appointments require a $100 deposit.
I've spent a lot of time in a lot of tattoo parlors and I have to say this is by far one of my favorites.
The tattooists are friendly and polite. I went in there not knowing any of them and a girl by her self is not often treated with overflowing respect in a tattoo shop. Not at Rock of Ages - every single one of them was a gentleman to me. I didn't feel uncomfortable or put out at all.
Turns out many of them are friends of friends and we've now become friends outside of the Tattoo shop. I see Tony on a regular basis and even outside of the shop he's an absolute delight. I wouldn't get tattooed anywhere else.
Right after my dad died in October, I knew that I wanted to get a tattoo to memorialize him. And I knew that I wanted it to cover a small one on my ankle that was 20 years old. I went in to check out the place after reading good reviews here and elsewhere, and met Tony.
I told Tony a bit about my dad and our relationship, and he immediately had an idea. The more I thought about it, the more I loved it. The next week, I booked an appointment (Tony works only by appointment) and dropped off a deposit (they are cash-only).
When I got there for my tattoo, Tony didn't have anything drawn up for me to see, instead, he wanted to draw it out right on my leg. I loved this idea, wanting the whole process to be very organic and thoughtful. While he drew, I didn't even look. I just wanted his artistic mind to work naturally with the ideas that we had talked about.
I looked at the green and black Sharpie marks on my leg when he was finished with it, and told him to get started. It was going to be perfect. And less than an hour later, it was just that. Perfect.
My Tony tattoo is beautiful and bright, one-of-a-kind, an awesome tribute to Daddy and a perfect cover-up to an older piece.
Now, a little more than a week later, it's even more beautiful. The colors are even brighter, it is healing beautifully and I wouldn't change a thing!
See Tony. You won't be disappointed.
Tony is a fantastic artist.  He has retouched all my prior work and beautified many other parts of my body.  I have always been COMPLETELY pleased when I leave the shop and have been long term!  Artistic freedom is my motto - and they certainly have it here.  It's clean and comfortable.  I would never go anywhere else (unless I was getting a n 'authentic' tribal somewhere)...so check them out.  You get what you pay for  :-)  and it's time for me to get more ink!
Review Source:All my Austin reviews are starting to sound the same, "I am new to Austin and..." oh well. Â So being new to Austin, I asked around for the best tattoo shop in town and everyone seemed to be in agreement when they referred me to Rock of Ages. I checked out the myspace, facebook and website of the shop first to scope it out. Â Rock of Ages had amazing artists who do amazing work. I have an older tattoo that I had lasered once and have been going back and forth whether to laser it off completely or get it covered up. I talked to Jay Chastain and he drew me up an amazing owl, the wings covered up the old tattoo perfectly. I couldn't be more happy with the tattoo, shop and Jay's professionalism and patience for dealing with my million questions. Thanks ROA, now I can rock a bathing suit and not feel like a convict!!!
Review Source:I researched extensively before getting my first tattoo. I'd stop random people on the street with gorgeous ink and most of them said that Jason or Tony at Rock of Ages did it for them. Another friend recommended them and so off I went. I got a small but very personal piece that had to be "perfect" as it was very small and intricate. Jay did the work for me and he was wonderful.
And yes, it did come out perfect. :)
Steve at Rock of Ages was absolutely wonderful. Actually, I know I talked to a few dudes there, and they were all decent. I usually assume I have dumb tattoo ideas and people are rolling their eyes so hard at me it makes me not want to get the work done...but here they took my idea, did their own work on it and... my tattoo was perfect. The appointment had to made at least a few weeks out- but it was worth the wait.
I felt completely comfortable, the office & studio are clean and neat. There is a lot of wonderful tattoo art to look at whilst you grit your teeth in pain (actually, it wasn't bad at all!)
God help my mother and my wallet, I may get so many more tattoos because this place rocked so hard.
I think they only take cash so bring cash. There is an ATM next door but it charges $3.00 for cash, and it's in a coffee shop so I felt like I had to buy a coffee to use the ATM, but I'm exceedingly neurotic so that may not apply to regular folk.
Great tattoo experience. The also have a decent parking lot, as far as Lamar st. business go. :)
Rock of Ages is the best tattoo shop in Austin. Â The artists there are talented, cool, and creative. Â They will take your idea and turn it into a tattoo that you will be proud of forever. Â People stop me on the street to comment about my tattoos from Jason. Â They are unique works of art. Â And the artists at Rock of Ages do not mind educating people about tattoo art and tattoo culture in an informal, friendly manner. Â If you want a quality tattoo, totally unique and created just for you, Rock of Ages is a sure bet.
Review Source:After my artist moved to Maine I struggled to find a shop with the same type of old school style and atmosphere. Â I wanted somewhere where I could hang out and not feel like I was surrounded by tribal and other bad decisions, and have a big hairy man do my tats. Â
Tony did a great piece (which I have yet to finish, only because it is an expensive undertaking) in a short amount of time. Â He even did a touch up on another tattoo that I had!! For Free!! Â Who does that???
One day, brunch at Eastside somehow became GROUP TATTOO PARTY at Rock of Ages.  Mimosas weren't even involved, it was strictly intoxication by egg.  Anyway, I had been tattooed here before, and had a very pleasant experience (clean, professional, cool artists, competitive pricing), but this trip  was even better.  Hector took on a whole gaggle of tattoo virgins and freehanded great designs from our semi-articulate imaginations. (Can you imagine how hard it is for tattoo artists, who get requests like, "You know, like a tree, with some leaves, but like, not cartoony, but kind of gothic, but more Edward Gorey than Marilyn Manson"?) Yeah.  Well, Hector made beautiful sense of this and took care of everyone in a flash.  We had a great time and hung out a bit, talking shop and parties and California dreaming.  I went back a few weeks later and he did this incredibly detailed and fantastic rendering of a Carson Ellis drawing.  The rest of the Rock crew is fab, too.
Review Source:Briza Camacho worked my ribs for a huge saint portrait. She has a lot of skill on the ink as well as off rendering images to your hearts delight. The shop is friendly and very professional. Though I spent a lot of time just sitting in the chair the visit to Austin was amazing. Â If your traveling through Austin or you're local and just looking for skilled ink slingers, this is the place to get to know. I guarantee you will be a repeat customer!
Review Source:I went to Rock of Ages to get my first tattoo after several friends recommended this place. My artist's name was Briza and she did a great job. Apparently they were really busy that day but she managed to squeeze me in. She was very honest and helpful since it was my first time and the tattoo turned out awesome!
