Yeah, it seems pointless to add my 5 stars to this long list, BUT I would be a crappy person if I received such good service and did NOT yelp about it. So....
I loved everything about this place. My mom and a girlfriend brought me to get my nose pierced for my 28th birthday. It's a two level business space and the downstairs is mostly cases of gorgeous jewelry. All of a sudden I wanted 6 more things pierced so I would have a place to put it all. In my head I was thinking, "Can I also get my ears double pierced for these earrings. And triple pierced for theeeese earrings. Whatever needs to be pierced for this swirly jewelry- That's cool. . ." I stuck with the one piercing I went in for, but it was tempting. Danae helped and pierced me and she was awesome. She had an inventory of everything on an iPad and figured out how much each piece of jewelry would be with tax, the piercing fee, etc., so we knew EXACTLY what we were shopping for. She was extremely knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything thoroughly and answer any questions we had. Their jewelry is really quality stuff.
Once I picked out my jewelry she brought us upstairs to a private area where I got pierced. She put all of the equipment in a hospital-esque magic sterilizing machine while she explained the piercing process and aftercare instructions. Again, she was extremely thorough and knowledgeable. She used her expertise to mark the perfect spot on my nose, which I was totally comfortable letting her do. The actual piercing was a surprise to me. I haven't had many piercings. I don't know what I expected. Someone to use a dinky gun like they used at Claire's to pierce my ears, putting it on my nostril, and shooting me in the face with it? She swabbed my nose inside and out with soap, which was probably the most uncomfortable part of the whole process. I laid down on a table and taped to the ceiling was a note, "Everything is going to be ok." That made me laugh. She put a little sheet on my face with a hole cut out for my nose like she was going to do actual surgery. She told me to take 3 deep breaths. On the 3rd exhale there was a little prick, like getting a little shot at the doctor's office. The needle was in, but she wasn't finished, so naturally I had to sneeze the biggest sneeze I've ever had. I held it in so hard that my eyes watered. She did everything by hand, as opposed to by gun, and I was shocked at how much it did not hurt. She was so gentle, it was amazing. It only took a few minutes, I finally sneezed, and I was good to go! She asked me to go back in a month so she can look at it and make sure it's healing properly. It's been a week and I've had no problems or even any soreness. Everyone loves it and my husband says it looks like I've had it forever. I'm so happy with my experience here. I'm only angry at myself for not getting my nose pierced sooner! I will never go anywhere else for new piercings OR jewelry ever again. This business definitely deserves its 5 stars. Thanks guys! :)
My wife has wanted her nipples pierced for a long time but was always too nervous. This place was amazing... Super clean, very stylish. Both of us were very impressed by Danae and how informative she was regarding the piercing process. We'll definitely go back if either of us ever need another piercing.
Review Source:I can't say anything that hasn't been said, I just want to add my kudos to the top of the pile!
First of all, we got GREAT service even before we went in. My girlfriend is new to Austin and wanted something new to "mark" the occasion. She called twice and the phone just rang, I think it was near lunch. She did not leave a message. A couple hours later someone from the shop saw her missed calls and called her back.
Now THAT is service!
When we arrived we were greeted warmly. She said she had an appointment and they got started right away, no wasted time! Once Pineapple looked at her ears (she wanted a daith piercing) he suggested appropriate jewelry and we walked upstairs to the piercing room.
He explained the entire procedure and completed the autoclave sterilization right there in front of us, which was awesome. Too many times you go to a shop and they SAY stuff is sterilized...but how do you know for sure? Pineapple makes sure you know he's safe, and that's REALLY important.
The actual piercing itself took around 45 seconds. The jewelry they selected for her ear fit perfectly, and the angle was *just right*.
Overall, a pretty great experience!
I just wanted to update my review to say that I've been back to Justin twice more since I first wrote my review & I continue to be impressed - he's just plain awesome. The shop is clean, there's no attitude from anyone who works there, and the work is great. I make sure to have cards on me so I can hand 'em out to all the people who compliment me on his work, too!
Review Source:You might as well just stop searching and go to Shaman Modifications.
I've only lived in Austin for about 6 months so I was really skeptical of places since I have never had any work done in Austin. After reading the reviews about Pineapple, I decided on Shaman and about a week ago I went in to to get my septum pierced. I don't think I could've made a better decision.
I have never met anyone who explained sterilization, the piercing process, or aftercare as thorough as he did and I immediately knew I was in good hands. His precision and the time he took to make sure every marking was 100% right was even better. And to top it all off, the piercing was so quick, painless and absolutely perfect.
After visiting this man, I wonder how the hell I have ever gotten any of my past piercings done by anyone else. Pineapple, you are the wizard of your craft.
Love love love this place. I got my forward triple helix pierced here by Pineapple and it was the least painful piercing experience I've had, I was a little nervous but Pineapple talked me through some breathing and I really appreciated that. He explained the piercing and healing process in detail, & sanitized everything in front of me. I've had some problems with my ear swelling, and each time I've gone in Danae was beyond helpful. I reccomend Shaman to anyone looking to get a piercing.
Review Source:Pineapple is still amazing. Â Went in last month for a cartilage piercing and felt totally comfortable taking his advice about final placement so that it could be seen from both the front and side. Â
Jewelry was picked out, we went upstairs to the procedure area where he went over sanitation and healing. Â
The actual piercing was next to painless (it is still a hole in my ear) and was over in just a few minutes. Â
I've had several questions about the healing on this new piece and Pineapple has been fantastic with answering questions both in person and over email.
I just needed a small wrist tatto done by Justin, and he was fantastic. Very knowledgeable, helpful and available by text when I needed to ask questions or send revised designs. The studio was clean and organized, and the staff was friendly. I'll be recommending his work and Shaman Modifications to all my friends!
Review Source:This place changed my thoughts on piercing period, they really have their knowledge down!! I had already 6 other piercings and never heard of these techniques before. I went in to get both of my nipples pierced. Because of this sensitive part of my body I knew I didn't want to go with just anyone. I emailed Danae for an appointment and even over email she was courteous and broke down the process a little. We also had a phone conversation where she explained more.
The actual going in to get the piercings I was obviously nervous. She walked me through each step very thoroughly and explained things to me I never heard of before! She was like a super chemist/doctor/piercer. I was impressed. The actual piercing was painful but I was mentally ready since she was letting me know every step of the way what was happening and what I was going to expect.
It was worth every penny and Danae is on my top list of great piercers!
I went here about a month ago for a navel piercing, and it was, by far, the best experience that I've had at a piercer. Â I've had ten piercings in my ears and an industrial before, and none of the piercers were as kind, accommodating, and thorough as Pineapple was with me.
I had wanted to get a navel piercing since I was 16, but I never did because I was afraid of the upkeep. Â I had heard rumors of not being able to swim (which I love to do) for a year or more, or having to pour salt in your belly button. Â I'm also allergic to everything (even stainless steel or hypoallergenic metals), but Pineapple kindly dispelled all of these myths and set me up with a titanium piercing which is, by far, the best piercing I have ever had.
It's been a month and no infections, no problems, and best of all, no allergic reactions, and I have been able to shower and wade in water with a watertight bandage. Â I had such an incredible experience, and I know that in the future, I'll be buying more jewelry from Shaman AND getting my industrial re-pierced by them. Â I can't say enough amazing things about them.
If you want to be pierced, these are the guys (and gals) to do it for you.
I love Shaman Modifications! I initially came to this shop because I wanted to switch out a septum piercing, but I have been back two other times to replace an o-ring stopper that disappeared from the back of one of my earring plugs and to get an earlobe stretch. I have only met with Pineapple and he is a walking work of art!
I talked with him about my experience with another piercing professional in DT Austin and my concerns about bleeding and stretching too soon and he talked with me about caring for my lobes post-stretch and what I could do to prepare for the next one. I have never felt as at ease and comfortable in the hands of a piercing professional as I have been at Shaman Modifications. Pineapple, in particular, is ridiculously knowledgeable, patient, and has a really calming presence. I have been to other piercing professionals in the Austin area and have lived in Seattle where I started my piercings and Pineapple is hands down my favorite. The jewelry selection is extensive and shows a lot of care and respect for body modification as an art form.
I am moving back to the Seattle area and will truly miss Shaman Modifications. I hope you Austinites realize what a absolute gem you have in Shaman Modifications.
I highly recommend this shop to anyone. In particular, Tony, who is talented, funny and set us completely at ease. He is easy to talk to and worked with my husband and I to give us exactly what we wanted. We never felt out of place, even though this was our first tattoo. His aftercare instructions are clear and easy to follow, insuring a happy life with our body art for ever and ever.
Review Source:Just had my nose pierced with Danae--this was my first piercing other than my ears (which were done when I was 2 yrs old!) so I was a bit nervous. Danae explained everything in FULL detail and answered all of my questions thoroughly so that I felt completely comfortable. The placement looks great and I am very happy! Highly recommend. I'll be going back for any other piercings I end up getting. :)
Review Source:Listen to all of the previous positive reviews listed!!! This place is awesome! Trust me the nose knows. I just went to get my nose pierced, and everything from the greeting to the farewells were positive, thorough, and comforting. Pineapple (piercer) was fantastic. He was professional, knowledgeable, and super friendly. I definitely will be sending all my friends here for future piercing needs!
Review Source:The nicest dang people ever, very informative and friendly, not pushy, don't jack you around, and the place is spotless. Â And the best part - both Danae and Pineapple can keep you calm and cool even as a needle is going through you. Â Honestly, it was like piercing yoga and it was really fast and didn't come to NEAR the level of pain I was expecting! Â Everything's healed up nicely and I love it. Â It's not the cheapest place in town to get pierced, but it is definitely the BEST. Â (p.s., don't go to the cheapest place, ew!)
Review Source:I found this shop on Yelp and after looking at shops in Austin for a week I decided that this place was my best option. I'm glad I decided on Shaman Modifications...
I went in for a standard navel piercing. Â I have trypanophobia, a phobia of needles so I took an anxiety pill 30 minutes before to save the piercer, Pineapple, a little bit of frustration because I can be extremely difficult. Ha.
Upon walking in the shop I was welcomed with enthusiasm and he asked me what I was interested in. After telling him, I told him I do in fact have a needle phobia. He was so understanding. Now, he went through everything about how this piercing was gonna go, what kind of jewelry will fit in my navel, when we went upstairs, he went through step by step about the sterilization process, the steps he was going to take to pierce me, then I received an entire pamphlet on after care! I have NEVER gotten an explanation so thorough and precise from any tattoo/piercing a hope EVER. It made me so comfortable and I wasn't freaking out after that. During the piercing he helped me with my breathing to keep me calm and to make things as easy for him a well.
It was done and it was by far the easiest piercing I've ever had. I will come back to this shop for anything. So clean, so professional. I also can't say thanks enough to Pineapple for making this easy! Amazing service all around.
Since I moved to Austin I have only gone to Shaman and specifically to Pineapple for my piercings. That was 2 years and 4 piercings ago. My wife has also gone to Justin for her tattoos and we both agree this place can't get any better. The staff are all courteous and helpful and are the most knowledgable piercers and and tattoo artists I've ever met.
And on a really personal note I hope pineapple never moves to another city because I would rather travel to him than try and find (probably fail) a piercer who is as good as pineapple.
Wow! This shop is great!
Not only was the shop clean and attractive, the tools and jewelry were cleaned in front of me. Pineapple was kind, through and deliberate. He walked me through the piercing process and made sure I knew what was going on. He also offered up possible questions that I could have, which is what I needed.
(Who is actually thinking clearly enough to know what questions to have? Not this guy.)
It was quick, relatively painless, and affordable.
While the pricing seemed right for alternative piercings, it felt a bit steep for simple ear-jabbing. I would recommend this shop to anyone looking for a safe place to get their body modification done.
I spent a good deal of time in person and on Yelp looking through listing and trying to find a place to get my first tattoo done. Finally, after going to a few places, I ended up at Shaman. For me, first impressions are important, and what I saw was a clean, open layout with an organized waiting room and front desk. That's a good start.
When I talked to the guy up front (the piercer, Pineapple?) he said that for tattoo's I should talk to Justin. After an initial consultation about what I wanted done (a large shoulder piece) he gave me a really reasonable price (I ended up paying in all about $550 in total), at least to what I can compare to. I had seen his portfolio online, and in person, and was impressed by his artistry as well as experience.
It finally came the day that I mustered up enough courage to ask about making an appointment, and he said that he actually had a spare slot long enough to get it done that same afternoon. I went in, and after a bit of review, he had come up with a design, and explained the procedure really nicely.
Overall very impressed. He said if anything didn't seem up to par (he had taken a *tiny* amount of creative liberty, as my design was pretty much set save for the coloring) I could go in and he could do any touch ups. So far I've only had compliments on the work he did (and to myself!) While I oft have said that I wouldn't consider getting another as I really only want a tattoo with significant meaning to myself, I have now considered another due to Justin's great job the first time around.
A tattoo was new territory for me, and so I was a little nervous when going in to find out more information. I was greeted very kindly and made to feel very comfortable. The place looked and smelled very clean.
Getting my tattoo from Justin was also a great experience. He was kind and patient. He is a laid-back guy with a cool story about being a professional sculptor back in the day, and how his own first tattoo experience (which was not good) has influenced the way he has built his own business. He knows how to treat people well.
I would come back here again if I ever decide to get another tattoo. I highly recommend this establishment.
Walked in before they opened (didn't realize we were early) and were let in, helped and serviced like we were just on time!
Got good advice as to what to get (I needed a nose ring and my friend needed a belly button ring)!
Will definitely come back here for all my tatooing/piercing needs!
I have been into the shop twice for piercings. Â Pineapple did the first and I was very pleased with his professionalism and attention to detail. Â He was thorough and calm; just what I was hoping for. Â
Today, due to my schedule, I made an appointment with Danae. Â Wow! Â I liked her even more!! Â (No offense, Pineapple) Â She was very kind and patient with my questions and the actual piercing (another helix) could not have been smoother. Â I left there feeling very happy with the entire experience. Â Thank you, Danae!
3 beautiful brown women walk into a piercing parlor for 4 piercings. A nose piercing (done with BEAUTIFUL tiger's eye stone set in 14 karat gold), an anti-tragus, a septum, and a micro dermal...were all on the menu.
Once upon a time, I walked into a piercing parlor/tattoo shop in Austin...*cough cough, Atomic tattoo...burn in hell, cough cough** And as I found myself sitting on the table before the needle poked through and blood started gushing down my shirt, I found myself praying...."Please dear Goddess...make me a bird, so I can fly far far away from here." I can only say that my experience at this shop was SOOOOO vastly opposite of that one. NONE of their jewelry is externally threaded......PROPS for being educated, intelligent proprieters who UNDERSTAND why that is an inferior, and shitty way to go in the realm of jewelry. Unlike other shops in Austin that do carry externally threaded jewelry. *ahem, ahem...Atomic Tattoo...piece of trash piercers*
Now, I will admit...the appointment that was originally made at Shaman's Modifications was solely for the nose. ANd I realized that I walked in and asked for the second piercing....and then if my two friends who came with me could get their piercings....and I KNOW that's not very classy or respectful of a business time management....however....Pineapple was SO accommodating and I would have totally understood if he asked us to wait. However, we were really lucky and had hit a sweet spot of a window of his time in which he was able to help us get ALL the piercing done.
That Pineapple (who I believe is the owner) .... he is a CLASS act. You know how sometimes, when you're speaking to someone on the phone....and warmth just flows into your ear. That was my experience with him.
In the course of my life I have been pierced more times than I can count. I've had a SLEW of things done. Each piercing healed in different ways and different times...but one CONSISTENT thing about ALMOST all piercers was that they were not the nicest people. They were kind of asses. They did their jobs incredibly well....but they were just not very nice. Â
After making initial markings as to wear I would be punctured, and adjusting them for my liking.....he had me lay back in the chair and right above me I read a sign that said "Everything is going to be ok, just remember to breathe." Which just made my little heart beat easier. Pineapple takes SUCH good care with cleanliness and even showed me strips of paper that indicated whether the jewelry was clean, before and after sterelization. Amazing.
Ok....personal revelation. I get off on pain. I love it. Every time I'm pierced...I look forward to that piercing pain...and then as I breathe out....I let that feeling wash over my body. So, when Pineapple said..."breathe in....breath out.." and on the third one pushed the needle through....I went into a state of ecstasy. Â Hey...it's a quirk....and I own it.
My friend who got her septum piercing was so amazed. She could BELIEVE how much better it was this time when she got pierced. Before, the man who pierced her just didn't take care of her. And she was BLOWN away by how much better it was this time around.
My friend who got her micro dermal piercing...was shaking afterwards---from all the incredible energy that started flowing through her body.
THIS MAN HAS EARNED THE TITLE OF SHAMAN! When my friend with the septum piercing told him that this time around she didn't hear a crazy crunch as the piercing was done....Pineapple's response..."I told you...these hands are magic."
hahaha...PERFECT. Simply perfect.
I have noticed that at every MAJOR juncture of my life, I have gotten a piercing. And this time it was no different. I was THRILLED to get pierced by a man who knows the cultural roots of piercing. Whose piercing shop is NOT covered on the walls by photos of modern day folks with piercings...but by folks from cultures and tribes all over the world with their amazing piercings. His jewelry selection is IMPECCABLE. I was floored. SO much to select from!
DO NOT GO ANYWHERE ELSE IN AUSTIN TO GET PIERCED. Â Go to a man who has been doing this for 12 years. Who has a masters degree in Anthropology, Who talks about his wife and sort of glows while he does it. AND WHOSE NAME IS PINEAPPLE FOR GOODNESS SAKES!!!
*Amen*
First of all, this place is one of the more expensive. With that being said, if you're looking for a bargain when it comes to putting something on or in your body, you probobly shouldn't be getting anything at all.
The shop- When you first walk in it smells really nice. Not too perfumed or anything just clean and a bit earthy, if that makes any sense. VERY clean and tranquil and the amazing art surrounding you doesn't hurt. I felt calm as soon as I walked in.
The staff: Pineapple did my single nipple piercing. Can't say enough good things about this dude. Very professional, yet still took the time to chat and visit with me and my roommate who accompanied me. Between the two of us, we asked about a hundred questions and he answered each one with enthusiasm & detail.
The procedure: Unlike other shops, he showed me EXACTLY what he was doing and explained why each step was important. From measuring my nipple twice, to each step of steralizing, as well as electrocuting my jewelry to the precise color of my choice. (I got violet!) I never felt uncomfortable with my shirt off. The room was very private. He even let me pick some songs from his iPod. When you lay down and look at the ceiling, it says "Everything will be ok. Just remember to breathe." A little corny but much appreciated right before he was getting ready to stick me. He was very quick and efficient. Pain was very minimal.
The day after: I ended upsleeping on my stomache and awoke expecting to be in pain, however it feels fine! It's just a little sensetive but not sore at all. I am so glad I went to this place! Well worth the cash!
One of my tattoo artists, Nixxin has moved to a different shop, but I came to Shaman to get help from Pineapple regarding my nose ring.
I was using the cork screw kind and it kept poking me inside my nose- I hated it!
He hipped me to these nose studs that have a flat back on the inside of the nose, and I haven't taken it out since.
It is a brilliant design, and I am glad he is carrying them.
He was professional and gentle, and his piercing room was immaculate.
He has the largest, most diverse, and highest quality of body jewelry that I have ever seen.
I highly recommend Pineapple for your piercings and jewelry!
After reading all of the positive reviews online I decided to make an appointment with Pineapple to have my nose pierced. Â This was my first piercing (aside from ears). Â I emailed Pineapple for an appointment and, not only did he get back to me very quickly, he was very friendly. Â Friendly is not as common as it once was so I was very pleased. Â He was very helpful in setting up an appointment that fit my schedule and encouraged me to contact him if I had any questions. Â As professionalism goes it gets no better than this.
I went in for my piercing and admitted I was afraid as I had no piercings or tattoos. Â Pineapple was very reassuring. Â He explained everything in great detail including their sterilization process. Â I found that very, very comforting. Â Their sterilization process was A+. Â The piercing itself was not nearly as painful as I had anticipated. Â For me, it was no more painful that something like a blood draw. Â He spent time explaining everything including aftercare instructions. Â I am very happy with my piercing and my jewelry. Â
If you are looking to have something done, I highly recommend this establishment. Â Pineapple was not only extremely knowledgable but friendly and professional. That is a combination that is almost unheard of nowadays.
I got my nape pierced here about a year ago and I have to say, this is the most professional, knowledgeable, sanitary body modification place I've every been to. Pineapple was AWESOME! He really knows his stuff, told me what to expect before, during and after the piercing process and how to take care of my piercing during the healing process. If I ever get another piercing, this is the place I would go. GO HERE!
Review Source:I had my nostril piercing done in August of 11 by Pineapple. This was my first experience with any kind of body modification beyond the usual ear piercing as a child. Not only was he incredibly professional and explained every step along the way, he was also very kind, understanding and just as excited for my piercing as I was. Prior to this appointment, I had spoken to him several times over the phone and even had to email a few appointment changes due to unexpected visiting friends, and he took it all in stride. He offers a free one month checkup to ensure everything is healing well, which I gladly took advantage of.
Since seeing him in September, I have visited his business twice more, both times to get help reinserting my piercing after prolonged removal. Once, I was helped by Danae who was very kind and gladly offered to help me for free. The visit took less than 5 minutes total. The second was today, with Pineapple, which was a little more complicated and more painful, but that's my fault for leaving it out so long, not Pineapple's rough handling or anything like that. He was still very courteous and provided the service for free (though I thanked him for his help with a tip). He also discussed options with me to avoid this happening again, done with a helpful mindset, not 'please stop coming in to have me fix your negligence' ;)
I'll be seeing him again in a few days to explore some of these options further, once the swelling from re-stretching my cartilage goes down.
I could not have asked for a better professional, or a better business, to handle my first, and future, modifications. The entire staff is fantastic!
(Side note- you do get what you pay for here. The services may not be cheap compared to other tattoo/piercing places, but they are well worth the extra investment to get high quality jewelry and amazing, personal service. And its still all reasonably priced!)
I didn't end up getting pierced here (had to get back to Boston), so this review is mostly about customer service.
I dealt mostly with Pineapple's apprentice, Danae, and I was blown away by her knowledge of metals and techniques, and by her professionalism. After spending twenty minutes with her, there was no question that I would feel 1000% Â confident having her work on me. She even helped me identify a shop in MA that belongs to a stringent professional organization, so I can get the best and safest work possible.
Wonderful group of guys. Pineapple is the nicest person in the world. Â He is generally the guy who greats you at the entrance. Â Unlike some of the other tattoo places in town, customer service is a big deal here. Â I have had three of my tattoos done here over several years including my first. Â They are always courteous and understanding. Â They listen to your concerns and give good advice on design ideas and aftercare. Â They stand behind their products and genuinely enjoy what they do. Â I have referred many people here for tattoos and piercings. Â Pineapple's piercings are not cheap, but he stands by them for the lifetime of the piercing. Â
Justin is a super nice guy. Â He does solid tattoo work and gives free touch ups to anything that doesn't heal up quite right. Be sure to check out his art too!
Don't be fooled by cheap deals like over at Platinum Ink. Â My work from Shaman has aged so much better than anything done there. Â
Cleanliness is a HUGE deal. Â The place is laid back in front but downright sterile in the tattooing and piercing zones. Â
I definitely recommend!
I found ShaMod on Yelp, while searching for the best septum piercing shops. Â I was skeptical of all the great reviews, so I decided to check out the actual website and read the 'about' page of this so called Pineapple. Â I left even more impressed than when I arrived at the website! Â For everything said here was not only true, but more interesting facts were left out!
The shop was both clean & inviting. Â Professional atmosphere, while still having that home-village like feel. Â I was comfortable, in that again, all that I had read was indeed true. Â I arrived somewhat calm but a bit anxious for the septum piercing yesterday, but I knew I was in good hands. Â Which allowed for me to calm myself, before the piercing. Â There is nothing worse then being anxious while second guessing the chosen shop & piercer!
Pineapple explained each process from sterilization (he even sterilized the gloves) to the actually piercing. Â I should note, septum piercing is unlike other piercings. Â In that, symmetry is quite the challenge & also of the up most importance for such placement of a piercing. Â In fact, this step was the most time consuming. Â Pineapple was very patient and diligent in making sure that my septum piercing was perfect! Â Dancehall played as Pineapple announced & performed each piercing step. Â Bam, it was done. Â The actually piercing, needle going through skin, was quite short & quick. Â Just as I started to feel 'pain' the retainer was in place & I was sitting upright.
Clear aftercare instructions were provided & explained thoroughly. Â I will visit again for any piercing in the future & would highly recommend ShaMod to family, friends, and all who ask for the best piercing place in ATX!
Thanks again Pineapple for your commitment to clean, quality, and wholesome piercing!
Shay
I had my heart set on a white tattoo, but was hard pressed finding someone reputable willing to do it. In comes Justin at Shaman. Not only does he have an awesome portfolio, but the shop is perfectly clean, sterile, and I felt very comfortable. He worked quickly and charged me very fairly. He even offered a free touch up in a month, to help the white ink set better. A week later, and it is healing beautifully.
I would definitely recommend this shop to anyone, I was very impressed.
I had just gone through a break-up and as always wanted to go get something pierced to take my mind off of things. After going to some of the downtown piercing parlors I decided I wasn't going to put myself through that again. I checked my trusty yelp app and found Shaman Modifications.
I'm usually a really cheap person but after reading the reviews for this place I decided I couldn't pass it up. My friend and I drove there as fast as we could to make the 7:30 walk in cutoff.
I was super nervous about getting my nose pierced since my friend continued to tell me how much it was going to hurt. We pulled up to a place that looked kind of sketchy from the outside... but when we walked in I felt much better. It was super clean and really professional. I was greeted by a super cool chick named Danae. She explained to me that she was something like a piercing apprentice but had lots of experience (and after having considered piercing myself I didn't really care at that point). She seemed very knowledgeable and I trusted her immediately. Plus she told me it would be $10 off for her to do it. I was so down.
She took me to the back room after picking out my jewelry and explained the process to me in great detail. She went through all the steps of the procedure and showed me how they sterilize everything. After signing some paper work she got me all set up for the piercing.
I WAS SUCH A WUSS!! It didn't even hurt at all and it was SO QUICK. Danae is amazing. I would definitely go to her again if I needed anything done in the future. I LOVE my piercing. It's perfect.
It's been over a week now and I can't even tell I have my nose pierced. It never hurt and is healing great.
I will definitely be back to Shaman Modifications!
I did some research online before choosing Shaman Modifications. I chose them because of their special attention to sterilization.
The piercing artist that helped me went above and beyond. Pineapple walked me through the entire process, provided me with a thorough explanation of the piercing and after care; and seriously blew me away with his knowledge and extra care with sterilization.
I've never seen such a clean working, skilled piercing artist. He took his time and you can see his experience in the work. I live in California, but I'll never go anywhere else for a piercing. Pineapple was the nicest guy, very amiable.
Didn't have enough on me for a tip, but I'll be sure to make up for it next time. A++++!
Firstly, let me say that this review is LONG overdo. This place rocks.
I was first drawn to Shaman Modifications by the incredible yelp reviews. However, being a person neither overly eccentric or overly conservative, I was still on the fence about my Monroe piercing. While I have one tattoo, piercing and tattoo establishments have the unfortunate stigma of being tacky and classless.
I was very pleased to find Shaman Modifications!
The interior is very classy and artistic without trying too hard to be edgy. Pineapple did my piercing, and the entire time he explained what he was doing and why. He did not rush like I was one piece on the assembly line, and took his time talking and working on me.
This place is also impeccably clean!! Pineapple definitely puts you at ease, but when it comes to cleanliness, he runs a tight ship!
To have my Monroe refitted and checked up on didn't cost me anything, and to later have a shorter bar was not expensive at all. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially for the excellent care and good cleanliness of this studio.
Pineapple, I will be back for another piercing and a new tattoo!
When I decided I wanted to get some branding and scarification done, I started asking around to see if any of my friends could recommend a good artist. Â Every single one of them pointed me to Pineapple at Shaman Modifications. Â That's a good sign.
Pineapple is incredibly knowledgeable, informative, friendly, and all around just a really cool dude. And his work is friggin' fantastic! Â I'm 1000% satisfied, and will definitely go back there for more work in the future.
KEEP AUSTIN MODIFIED!
This place is great! Stopped in to buy some replacement plugs and was quite impressed. Amazing service and great selection of jewelry. Very knowledgeable staff.
Be sure to use the Yelp check-in discount and save 10% on one piece of jewelry. Every bit helps.
Definitely heading back there at some point.
Pineapple is AWESOME! Got my tragus pierced here about a year and a half ago. Not sure why I didn't review this place til now..
Pineapple knows what he's talking about and makes you feel right at home.
I got my first tragus piercing at Platinum Ink. What a mistake that was. So glad I came to Pineapple and he gave me a great experience. Not only that, my tragus piercing didn't hurt and Pineapple has his own ways of letting piercings heal. That's what I liked the most.
Really need to go back to get my other tragus pierced!
Justin Vickers did a large, cherry blossom piece on my left arm. It is my favorite tattoo, the colors and shading still look great after years. The shop is very clean, staff is friendly, and the work is quality. Cannot recommend Justin highly enough - beautiful work and great conversation to boot.
Review Source:Let's just start with a 'wow'. Pineapple. You are amazing. My friend and I headed over to Shaman Modifications to get our noses pierced. We walked in an instantly felt at ease - the shop feels very comforting, not at all in your face. It feels clean but inviting. Everyone is respectful, even if you don't look like the typical tattoo and piercing customer.
I cannot get over how knowledgeable Pineapple is on piercings. He is currently working with the state health board to change the regulations on piercings to be MORE stringent! He is concerned with the safety and well being all of people wanting to be pierced. Through the piercing process, he walked us step by step through all information we needed to know. He sterilizes practically everything he uses during the piercing process right in front of you, before you get pierced. The sterilizing machine he uses is an instrument that was introduced to the medical world through the piercing community. It only uses filtered water, no chemicals and still kills all bad things. Pretty cool.
He also walks you through all of the jewelry options - his shop only carries high quality pieces, nothing from China where the regulations are not highly monitored. Even the couple of options with diamonds are fair trade from Canada - no blood diamonds here. There are no aftercare kits because all you need is a little Dr. Bronner's, and to follow his aftercare rules, which are 'Don't listen to your friends, don't touch, don't touch, don't touch, and if you do touch clean with Dr. Bronner's.'
I can see why people bring their children to get their ears pierced by Pineapple. There is nothing on the walls (that I saw) that I wouldn't want my son to see. He has great 'bedside manner' and his piercings are quick and painless. Pineapple is an absolute sweetheart and with 11 years of piercing experience, it should be a no brainer to visit his shop when in want of a piercing in any place on your body.
What do you do when you want to get your first tattoo? Â If you're anything like me, you obsess over artist portfolios online for weeks before choosing someone, THEN check their Yelp reviews. Â I was glad that the reviews matched up to the quality of the work I saw, so I went ahead and made an appointment with Justin for a consultation. Â
I was a little hesitant when I pulled up and saw the strip mall location, but my fears were put to rest as soon as I stepped inside. Â Clean, bright, and inviting are not generally things I think of when I think about body modification studio. Â I arrived half an hour early for my appointment, and Pineapple graciously kept me company. Â He gave me some advice about my industrial piercing (which I had gotten at another studio!). Â He answered all of my questions with tons of information and transparency. Â I hadn't even gotten any work done yet and had already decided that I wanted to come back and get a piercing from Pineapple!
Justin was very helpful during my consultation. Â I've heard so many horror stories of tattoo artists being snobby, but Justin is totally the opposite. Â He was able to translate my vague requests ("I want it to not look like a first tattoo!", "we're getting matching tattoos but want them to be more complimentary than matching") into two wonderful designs. Â
When I went for the actual work he was matter-of-fact about the pain and always let me know exactly what was happening. Â I'm also especially pleased with the healing method he suggested. Â I am absolutely in love with the colors and his design.
I will definitely be coming back here, I just need to decide what I want to get done next!
Pineapple is awesome! I got my first facial piercing on a whim, and I have loved it.
I was very nervous at the beginning, but Pineapple gave a great overview before the procedure. During the procedure, he is very thorough. He walks you through step by step. And he will let you know if he doesn't think you should get a piercing (due to inability to heal, etc.), which I greatly respect.
I changed out my piercing after a few months. Sadly, my piercing started getting infected when I tried to do it at home. The infections were on and off, so I contacted Pineapple multiple times for help. I went in a few times for cleanings with my infections. He was immensely helpful in instruction on the care of the piercing. After a few more hiccups on my end, I decided to take out the piercing, which Pineapple removed.
I definitely recommend this place for your piercings needs.
On a side note - I ended up doing a photography project on Pineapple and his shop. Everyone that walked in loved their piercings. Pineapple is great with piercings (even for kids) and brandings of all kinds.
I walked in last Saturday to finally get my first body art of my deceased Dad's dog tag. Â In no time at all, Nixxin had the draft up and made sure it was acceptable. Â The tattoo came out better than I expected. Â It has great shading and it, as stated, is getting better as time goes on. Â Nixxin has a great eclectic music library to make you relax.
I will be back to start a sleeve soon.
I would suggest to state that you saw their great ratings on Yelp to get the stated $10 off hen you first walk in. Â However, after seeing the result, I really could have cared less. Â Oh, another thought... Â Not sure if it was just me, but I payed w/ a debit card. Â It had a pre-authorization on it, and then a charge, so I am out the $$ in my account until that pre-authorization gets taken off. Â Just an FYI.
I got an AMAZING tattoo done here a little over a week ago. Justin Vickers is now my artist! YAY!
I made an appointment for my boyfriend and I at 3pm on Sunday. We were seen immediately even though he was talking to another person, and he actually ended up tattooing us as well as my boyfriend's dad. No bitchy attitude, either! An artist without a grudge? Call me crazy but most tattoo artists you meet aren't what you'd call "sweet."
His apprentice tweaked the lame Google image I used as an idea to perfection. While his apprentice was doing that, Justin went to work on my boyfriend's dad, who just got the integral symbol. It was maybe a 10 minute tattoo, and I could hear them chatting amiably from in the uhh.. waiting area or lobby or whatever.
Justin then did my boyfriend's tattoo, an integral (it's on Wiki if you care, but if you do, you probably already know what it is, lol). Fonts are pretty hit or miss, but Justin's lines are impossibly straight and the formula looks straight out of a Word doc.
OMG. I am definitely biased but my tattoo is AMAZING. I try to allow for a looooooot of artist's discretion, and always feel bad if I don't present a canvas for that. No matter- Justin went to work on my piece and was finished in about 45 minutes. He remarked several times how well it would turn out and how great it looked; not a lot of artists get excited about stuff they don't personally create. I waited to look until it was done, as usual (unless it's a big piece), and I was shocked at how awesome of a job he did. Not because he is not amazing, but because he took something that had the potential to be slightly lame and made it exceptional! He even touched up the black lines on the tattoo right by it, and said next time I got something with color he'd touch up the color on that one, too.
His prices are VERY reasonable, too... I spent half of what I expected to pay.
Like I said earlier, phenomenal experience and I will most certainly be back, much to my parents' chagrin, I'm sure. :P
I've been here twice now and both times for new plugs. Pineapple is incredibly courteous and a genuinely nice guy. My plugs fell out about a month ago from jumping into barton springs, and I didn't really have the extra cash to afford a new pair.
Pineapple helped me out by using tapers to figure out what size my ears have downsized to and helped put them in with a little help from some coconut oil.
I'm sure I'll be back at some point, but I strongly recommend you go for any body modification work you need.
I waited until mine healed before reviewing, I think I wanted to make sure my review would be 110% honest.
Got my face pierced (nose), after much thought (years) it finally seemed like it was a good day 2 months ago. Â After much searching on Yelp, I found Pineapple. Â The man is a piercing guru I gotta tell ya.
It really was more of a spiritual experience and I really appreciated him, the environment and my recovery is proof that the man knows what he's doing. Â Pineapple really made all this possible. :) Â The facility is medical grade clean, he follows procedure the whole way through and talks the client through it all, even if they're not paying attention. ;) Â He does exactly what other reviewers said: Â 'He talks very soothingly and tells you to breath the entire time.' Â He could be a Lamaze coach.([he]has a few kids, so go figure)
Thank you sir, keep up the excellent service, I'm already looking for another spot for something to go. Â Those anchors are looking tempting, although I'm a little squeamish to the idea. Â But definitely working out the ink, I'm really looking forward to that. :) Â Highly recommend. Â TIP: Â Follow Pineapples tweets to get deals and discounts.
Great experience! Â I went in for a new tattoo, and some work on an old one. Â Justin instantly made me feel comfortable. Â He has an easy energy about him, has a gentle touch (as far as tattoos go), and does beautiful work. Â This was my fifth tattoo, but the first without fainting. Â So, that's a good thing. Â I'm so glad that I chose Shaman Modifications!
Review Source:My girlfriend and I went in here to get her a new tat and what an experience! It had been awhile since she had her last tat and when Justin started, she got a little dizzy. Justin was genuinely concerned and immediately stopped and allowed her to collect herself, get a drink of water and take a breather. (Note: make sure you eat before getting inked, his suggestions)
He was such a nice guy and really made us both feel right at home. Not to mention the superb quality of his work. Shaman Modifications is very clean, professional and welcoming. Great job guys!
Just moved here from California and needed a piercer. I went to see Pineapple today for a belly button piercing I thought had closed up. It turns out it either hadn't closed or it was and he is so good it was painless!
I could tell Pineapple was very talented and extremely experienced. Â The other staff members were very nice too! The place is clean, they have great jewelry, and wonderful talented staff. What more could you want?
My friend will be going for a piercing tonight!
Ok, I'll admit, I was nervous nellie about getting my nose pierced last april . However, with my best friend for moral support and in the hands of talented, calming and chill Pineapple, I got 'er done!
The shop itself was filled with a variety of pretty jewels that were reasonably priced. I felt very welcomed there and supported in my adventure! Pineapple was extremely knowledgeable, super safe/sanitary, concerned about my well being and having this be a positive experience. He helped calm my nerves by putting on some of my fav tunes and helping me breath thru the experience....He was a true joy to work with and I trust his work.
Interestingly enough, a few weeks I ended up having my nose swell over my jewel back home in NC. I called Shaman Modifications and spoke with a really nice lady who gave good advice. (I don't think it was anything that they did wrong, I suspect it was that the fit was just a bit too tight for me bc my recently re-pierced nose had to have a looser fitting which has proved successful.) I still stand behind the excellent work they did and the superior customer service they provided. I will def go there again in the future for more piercing, or, *gasp* possibly a tattoo! :)
If you want a place with positive energy, talented people who know and love their craft, give Pineapple a ring!
When my wife told me that she wanted to get a piercing I was a bit skeptical. Â When she told me she wanted to do it in a building housed in a business park I was even more worried.
I have to admit that I couldn't have been more wrong about Shaman Modifications. Â Not only was Pineapple, the owner, one of the most patient and gracious hosts, but he was by far the most professional artist I've ever met. Â
The location is a hidden gem that is colorfully decorated, with a beautiful assortment of piercings and plugs. Â The actual procedure was beyond sanitary and made my dentist and doctors office seem dirty. Â
He talked my wife through each step, and explaining throughout the procedure exactly what he was doing and how each step was important. Â Afterwards he sat with her and went over the care and cleaning, provided us with documentation and answered any questions we had.
I think if you are looking for a tattoo or piercing this is definitely the place to go. Â They are experts in their field and it shows. Â I would not hesitate to recommend this to anyone.
I've received 2 tattoos from tattoo artist Jimmie Knuckles, one on my back & one on my right wrist. I refuse to go to any other tattoo artist whether I'm in Austin or out of town. Jimmie is incredibly professional & down to earth. His take on all my ideas for my tat's came out better than I thought they would. I'm going back in April for a lower back piece & will continue to keep going back.
I received my first piercing from Pineapple. I hadn't read a thing about him, just met him the night before I got it while Jimmie was tattooing my wrist. Pineapple is extremely professional, makes sure all his equipment is sterile & clean. Being my first piercing I was extremely nervous but he made it so calm & easy. I love my nose piercing & i'm going back for a follow up consultation today. While I don't know if i'll be receiving more piercings (I'm more a tattooer than a piercer) I wouldn't recommend anyone else, especially in the city of Austin for piercings.
Justin Vickers kicks ass! He fit me, my sister and her husband in the day of New Year's Eve and he did a quick (nearly) painless tattoo. He even offered a free touch-up since u got my tat in a "high traffic" area (the inside of my finger) Shaman Modifications are professional, easy to find and most important: non-judgmental. So come on in and make your mama cry ;)
Review Source:I had read all the reviews about Pineapple and his piercing techniques here on Yelp and was convinced that he was going to do my replacement piercing. Â I had gotten a microdermal a year ago and it came out. Â When I initially got it, it was such a painful experience, I had to totally trust in Pineapple when he told me it would not hurt. Â In a matter of two full inhales and exhales, my microdermal was replaced back in my cleavage where it belonged. Â Just a quick smart like any other piercing, and that was it. Â I was completely blown away.
THEN...I decided to get some gorgeous earrings that were slightly larger than my current holes and he offered to remove my current earrings and replace them with the new ones I bought there. Â I LOVE PINEAPPLE.
I am totally bringing my stepdaughter here for her nose piercing--and will probably get mine done too. Â I believe Pineapple will be my sole piercer from this day forward.
AND...for what it's worth...while there, my boyfriend was getting a tattoo by Justin Vickers....who is not only extremely professional, but intensely talented and creative. Â He did an amazing job on my boyfriend's back and I'm hoping to have a tat done by him as well in the future. Â I know my boyfriend is already thinking about his future tats with Justin.
Thanks, Shaman!!
Jimmie Knuckles @ Shaman Modifications = Hooray!
Jimmie provides the perfect tattoo experience: Beautiful custom work in a clean and comfortable shop by a friendly, professional artist.
I've been in to see him twice for work on a large back piece, and I absolutely love the results. From our first meeting, to the emails between appointments, I was really impressed with the care he took to personalize my experience and make sure that I was happy and comfortable with every part of the experience.
Go. You'll be delighted.
I got my nape pierced by Pineapple last week. He was incredibly professional and explained the entire process thouroughly each step of the way. Â The facilities were clean, he even explained how the autoclave works. I was impressed by the time he took to measure it out and help me pick which jewlery I wanted in order to make sure the end result would be as comfortable and aesthetically pleasing as possible. He coached me through my breathing and had a friendly demeanor that made the whole process relatively painless. Of course the piercing hurt, but I can imagine it would have been a lot worse if I had gone to someone less experienced and professional.
No complaints whatsoever. I was quoted a slightly lower price for the same piercing at some place downtown, but I firmly believe the few extra dollars was totally worth it.
Been wanting to get my ear pierced again and from http://Yelp.com I found this place with great reviews and decided to give it a try. Â
Popped in on Monday night and was greeted by Pineapple. Â There was no one in the place wanting piercings, so I had him one on one. Â I told him what I was wanting and and that I hadn't decided between two locations for the piercing, so he showed me a collection of photos of different piercings. Â
Pineapple was great. Â Super friendly, talkative, and just real. Â He explained everything to me just like I had read he did in all the other reviews. Â I also really liked that he examined my ear (because everyone's ears are so different) to make sure the earring would look right. Â He marked my ear and I asked him to adjust it and he didn't seem a bit off by me telling him to do this.
The piercing looks great and I'm really happy with it. Â I would def. come back here if I was getting another piercing!
My good friends, Tiffany and Crystal and I had talked about getting a tattoo for years now on our 21st birthday. 21 comes along and we make up some excuses as to why - "well I don't REALLY know what I want yet. I mean, let's all think about it first". 22 rolls by and I start chickening out. Tiffany, brave soul, gets one and shows me the light. "If I can do it, you can do it" she says. I talk with Felicia who has gotten her 2nd already and she tries to encourage me by calling me a fake chicken. "You always psych yourself out about stuff and when it's over you're okay"
Time to grow some! Ohledoit. (Oh let's do it)
Shaman Modifications is an AWESOME place. I couldn't have had my first at a better place. The people here are so down to earth, nice, and super helpful. I felt comfortable immediately and helped ease my first time jitters. Even though we walked in late (I think to myself, "oh darn... look at that... we are late, looks like we have to come back!), not so fast! Justin Vickers agreed to make time for us (uh oh, can't back out now).
He is an amazing artist plus he has skills to calm down an anxiety attack of mine. He talked us through the tattoos and offered suggestions. I'm a person that likes to be mentally prepared, and he walked me through everything. Before we started, he asked if I was ready. Nope. He let me have a few minutes to myself as I imagine the excruciating pain I'm about to endure. He calms my nerves and told me I could handle it. And I did. 15 minutes sped by. He stopped to tell me what was going on along the way.
Next was the bf's turn (yes, sharing our first time together :)... awww) He sketched a virgo symbol and Justin helped clean it up. I am so glad I went first. After all the many expressions of pain my bf gave, I definitely would have looked for the nearest exit sign and chunked up the deuce. The result was awesome! It definitely exceeded our expectations.
The care didn't stop there. At the end of it all, Justin gave us his business card with his cell on it and told us if we are unsatisfied with anything at all or need a touch up or need advice just to call or text him.
For this (fake) chicken, it was an awesome first time experience and I wouldn't look for anyone else but Justin if I decide to grow another pair and get a 2nd one.
Thanks Justin, you rock!
Imagine a desi family-- older, engineer father, mother adorned in a scarf, 20-something daughters who look like dorky teenagers-- walking into a legit tattoo and piercing parlour, for an ear piercing-- DURING RAMADAN!
Hilarity.
I took my family to Shaman modifications, when my mother forced me to have my ears re-pierced (yes, I still listen to my mother at age 26).
Since I've had issues with piercings in the past, and am paranoid, I wanted to go to a legit place (thank you, yelp) -- I also wanted to make the process as uncomfortable for my mother as possible.
Unfortunately, not only was the ear-piercing process not uncomfortable, it was AMAZING for the whole family.
No one looked at us funny, as if we didn't belong. I didn't feel weird for just getting my ears pierced, and having my parents there.
My whole family was enamored with Pineapple, who was extremely professional and friendly. He explained all the steps he would be taking, gave suggestions for jewelry choice, and made me feel easy about the piercing.
I was thinking about getting an additional piercing, but he recommended that I wait and see how this one healed. This really sold me on the establishment, because Pineapple really cared about my experience and health above making another sale.
The parlour was cute, but exceptionally clean. I was given pamphlets on maintenance, and a complimentary checkup a few weeks after the piercing.
Sorry for the long review, but this place isn't just a safe bet for a piercing, it provides a great experience.
It's more expensive than a place like Claire's, but worth the investment.
I recommend this place to everyone, even parents who want to make sure their children have piercings in a safe, sterile, professional environment that has a little flavor.
I met Pineapple many years ago, back when he was at Golden Apple on 6th.
I was only too happy when he got Shaman Modifications going and I have had such great experiences with him, I am recommending him
any chance I get.
Pineapple is A TRUE PROFESSIONAL, taking his trade AND the happiness and safety of his customers very seriously.
His shop is AMAZING! Beautiful, clean and well-thought out.
I want to place emphasis on the cleanliness here, this is a huge focus by Pineapple and the efforts and lengths gone through to ensure the place is kept sterilized is not lost on anyone who goes here, and surely much appreciated.
And it's not just about the sterilized instruments, I mean, he SHOWS you every step of the way, and takes time to explain the process of sterilization and is more than willing to answer questions about
his instruments and the process of usage.
Pineapple does an excellent job of aftercare explanation, is always a phone call away and takes his role as professional piercer extremely seriously.
But more than that, he is a kind and quality person.
Patient, Knowledgeable, Trustworthy. An Interesting and Unique Artist.
Professional, very professional.
Also, I would recommend anyone who wants to do any intimate piercings to have them done by Pineapple, he just oozes of consideration and competency and makes you feel comfortable.
I have 7 or 8 different piercings done by him and wouldn't go anywhere else if I ever wanted another one.
He will tell you his honest opinions, provide support for his work, is passionate about his trade and is well-loved by many people.
Just meet him and see for yourself.
Like I've told him the three times I've been to Shaman, Pineapple is a badass.
Having done 9 out of my 11 piercings myself, I figured it was time to go to an actual piercing shop for my tragus piercing. My father's advice, of course, was to Yelp it, and thankfully I did; Shaman Modifications had nothing but five stars. Being a minor at the time, I got the parent verification form, called, set up an unofficial appointment for the same day, and waited. Upon entering the building, I expected a certain sense of "oh god I'm not cool enough to be in this place what the hell am I doing", but no! Pineapple was at the desk to greet us, and after signing some forms, took me to the piercing room. He was very thorough, very nice, and explained everything he was doing. While I already knew everything he was doing from years of piercing research, it was very comforting to know he went through all guidelines I looked for in a piercing shop. He changed gloves several times during the autoclave process and right up to after he marked my ear. I laid down on the table and looked up and knew this was the right place, as there's a sign on the ceiling that says something to the effect of "breathe". The pain and time it took to pierce were miniscule.
Another thing I really love about Shaman is that Pineapple recommends Dr. Bronner's soap; arguably the best product on the market for cleaning piercings (and the 18 other ways it's famous for). After giving me aftercare instructions, I tipped, shook his hand, and was on my way. Thirty days later, I came for my free follow-up, and got my other tragus pierced. Shaman Modifications is wonderful, and there's no doubt I'll be back.
I did a ton of research on piercing shops in Austin before I went to Shaman, with cleanliness and quality being my two main criteria, and I have to say this exceeded my expectations due to the level of education provided by Pineapple during my piercing. Â As he said, "We hope you don't go anywhere else, but if you do, you'll know what to look for to make sure you're safe." Â
I got two helix piercings (does that make it a double helix?), and Pineapple walked me through each item he'd use as he put it into the autoclave tray. Â I love that everything is autoclaved right in front of you. Â He asked me what type of earrings I planned to wear and pierced the cartilage to give me the best angle for my earrings as well as make them appear even (most people have slight asymmetries) and avoid hitting a vein. Â
I also liked the level of communication and technology. Â Pineapple was available by e-mail before my piercing, and told me to follow him on Facebook and Twitter for special offers. Â He has a digital portfolio on which he can easily show you examples of his work. Â During my piercing, he asked me what kind of music I'd like to help me relax. Â Plus, after 30 days they offer a free follow-up visit to make sure everything is healing correctly.
I could not have been happier with his work, the quality of jewelry offered or the professionalism. Â I would definitely recommend Shaman and Pineapple to anyone looking for a piercing in the greater Austin area.
First let me say when I walk into a place, the immediate feel is a huge factor in whether I will give the establishment my business. Shaman Modifications, is a great treasure when you walk in the door you are greeted by Justin or Pineapple at the very least, amazing people!
My sister and I were referred by word of mouth, quite possibly the best way to be recommended. We went in and chatted with Justin about our ideas, and then gave him time to be creative. When we came back both our expectations were not only met but far exceeded.
I had a forearm piece done, where it was a partial stencil an partial free hand. I was in tears when it was done, it's gorgeous beyond compare. Mine was no easy feat, having existing pieces to be integrated, Justin made it look easy and Smiled while he did it!
My sister is in process of a wrist wrap piece with many straight lines, Justin lined it out and laid in the details with amazing speed and accuracy. She can't wait for the next session.
If you are looking for great artistry, phenomenal shop personality and a shop you will return to again and again Shaman Modifications is the place for you, hands down. Whether it be a piercing artist or a tatoo artist you want a level of trust and faith in quality of work, these guys are top of the line.
I will be going back. Justin thank you so much!!!
Still my most favorite place for piercings....but just got added to my favorite place to get tattooed as well!
My brother and I, somewhat on a whim, decided to go get a tattoo together last weekend. We both had wanted certain things for a while...so we walk in, tell them what we want, and we immediately get pointed in the direction of Josiah.
Josiah looks like Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands...and this is a good thing! He is precious sweet and was so helpful with both my brother's choice and mine. He sat down with us and drew things out...and I actually ended up picking something totally different out of his book and I couldn't be happier.
I had 6 tattoos prior to this last one...and I can say, without a doubt, that he is the best tattoo artist I've ever come across. Both of our tattoos are flawless...and he was seriously fast. I got the Flower of Life...which is basically a bunch of circles (not easy)....and he killed it.
I will follow him wherever he goes from here on out....couldn't have asked for a better experience. When he asked how I found them, I said we were looking to get a tattoo and I knew that Pineapple wouldn't employ anyone but the best.
I got tattooed by Jimmie about a week ago while visiting friends in Austin and I couldn't be happier. I've been getting tattooed for 15 years, and Jimmie and Shaman were as good and professional as it gets.
The shop itself is beautiful, and the lengths they go to for cleanliness and to prevent cross contamination should be a model for other tattoo shops. The guys at the shop were extremely nice, and professional. Jimmie took my idea, made it the perfect size, and tattooed me. I couldn't be happier with the diamond i got, or my decision to get tattooed at Shaman. And as a nice touch, they even made sure I was done in time to catch my flight home. I'd recommend this shop to anyone looking to get tattooed or pierced.
I had two smaller tattoos on my upper arms done about 10 years ago. Â Felt it was finally time for another and it would be a bigger piece done on the back of my right tricep. Â I read some great reviews here and checked this place out along with a few other shops in Austin. Â Shaman was by far the most friendly of the ones I visited. Â I instantly felt like they were really paying attention to what I had to say instead of being stuck-up artists so I felt really confident I made a good choice. Â Justin Vickers was going to tattoo me and I've seen some of his work including tattooing one of his co-worker's faces! Â I was sold at that point. Â I shot some ideas with him via email and MMS. Â Within a week I felt he nailed the design so it was into the shop for a 6 hour job. Â
If you aren't a newb and have gotten tattooed before you'll notice that Justin doesn't have a heavy hand, meaning it's not going to feel like he's putting a jackhammer to your skin. Â The total session lasted a bit over 5 hours but we made conversation while taking a few breaks. Â
I was stoked after seeing how it turned out. Â Sometimes it looks good on paper but not so much when its on your body but this custom Polynesian design came out better than I had imagined.
Definitely recommend this shop to anyone ranging from intimidated first-timers to those inked up head to toe.
So I just got hired, and since my job description includes the possibility of someone grabbing my nose ring and ripping it out, they prefer we stick with studs. So I'm retiring the shiny silver ring and in the market for a small, preferably colorful little nose speck. I've had the piercing for about 4 years and I've never had any luck with finding good studs. Cue a yelp search, and I come across Shaman. I decided to check it out. First of all, this place is easy to find, but also really easy to miss. (On the frontage road of Ben White) I found the strip center it was in (the sign said Tattoo) but couldn't find the building...
Anyway.. They have a sweet selection of nose studs. A bunch of different colors, and a few with stars and what not. You have two options here: one is kind of a two-piece thing where the stud sits into the back base piece, so the stud is interchangeable (so you can change colors). The second option is one of the twisty studs. The cool thing about the ones here is they will custom twist them to fit inside your nose. I have had ones before that were not custom twisted and therefore not the right size, and they are a pain. So Tony sized it for me and I put it in. It wasn't quite right so he re-did it and it was perfect. I've never had a stud that was so easy to get in and out (yeah, I know) and also fit just right. The price was right, and now I'm all set.
Pineapple and the rest of the duders here are very welcoming and chill. I went to get a vertical labret pierced on 12/27. Pineapple checked my anatomy visually in the waiting room, then took another client back. I was in no rush, so I didn't mind a bit. I looked through the other artists' portfolios and some tattoo magazines.
We went back into the piercing room, and discussed jewelry options. I prefer simple, straight-forward jewelry, and we found something I liked. The sterilization process was done properly, and he cleaned my lip very well. We spent a while marking the piercing properly, and then he donned his sterile gloves. The piercing was quick, and rather painless. I did like that it was freehand, without clamps.
He then also changed the jewelry in another piercing for me with no complaints about being busy. The threads got caught in some of the tissue and I yelped, but I forgave him - I probably would have done the same thing if I was doing it myself.
My labret is still a little crusty, but is healing very well. No pain, no redness, no tenderness, just leaking the bits of lymph which means it's still healing. I was totally comfortable at all times at Shaman Modifications, and totally recommend it for anyone looking for a decoration.
Yeah, I know. Just another five star review for Shaman. I can't help it, despite the hour long wait (If you follow Pineapple on Twitter, sometimes he has discount days to bring in customers. This was one of those days.) and how much lighter my wallet feels after my visit, this place is awesome and I'll be back. Hopefully again and again.
I've been to quite a few tattoo / piercing shops all over the country and Shaman is definitely in my top three. The folks who work there couldn't be any nicer and from looking through their portfolios, are all exceptionally talented. This time, I went in for a double nostril piercing and Pineapple was great. He showed me all of the sterilization techniques and answered all of my stupid questions about how the piercing and the jewelry worked. He was even nice enough to tell me what a good job I was doing as I cursed at the pain from the needle.
Overall, a wonderful experience. I hope to come back soon to get a portrait piece done by Wendi. Viva Shaman!
One of my friends, who is a long-time Austin resident, recommended Justin Vickers as the artist to get my tattoo from. Â I personally saw some of his work before choosing him to do my tattoo. Â
The studio is in a pretty depressing commercial park, but the inside is vibrant (is being remodeled) and is very clean. Â Justin was running a little late so I was able to go through his impressive portfolio. Â I also purchased a new piercing from Pineapple while I waited; Pineapple, whose face/head tattoos and imposing physique might intimidate you (in addition to his xbox skills [they have an xbox in case you have to wait]), was professional and a clear communicator.
My tattoo was pretty basic, time-consuming, and did not utilize Justin's skills....a more pretentious artist might have scoffed at my work, but Justin treated me like he would treat any of his clients (canvasses?). Â
Anyway, I was super-impressed with the studio, the work (on me and on my friends), and the the portfolios. Â I highly recommend getting your tattoo here.
And if you want a piercing, some Thursday nites are 2-for-1!
My friend and I had a great experience getting pierced by Pineapple.
Several weeks ago I decided to get my septum pierced, and started looking around for a place in Austin to do it. I didn't know what to expect, because this was my first piercing outside of my ears, and my first professional piercing ever. I found Pineapple's website and bio online and just felt comfortable about him, so I sent him an email. He was very friendly and told us to come on in the next day.
Meanwhile my friend, who has no piercings at all, decided he wanted his done too, so we both went. Turns out it was buy-one-get-one night on Thursday, which saved us both a bit of money.
Pineapple went over all the aftercare and sterilization procedures with us in a way that would make even the most squeamish person comfortable. He's very friendly, very approachable, and explains everything in this soothing, relaxing voice that takes the edge off if you're nervous. It's apparent that he is very, very knowledgeable about his craft.
He spent quite a bit of time marking my septum up to make sure the piercing wouldn't be crooked, and double checked it a few times. (Measure twice, cut once y'all.) Â He then talked me through the actual piercing part, and coached me through a few breaths before doing the deed. He's very gentle, and although it does hurt, it turned out to be waaayyyy less painful than I'd anticipated. I've had more pain at the doctor's office or on a bad run than I felt under Pineapple's care.
("What, really? That's it? It's in?" --- a great thing to say to your piercer; not so much in other contexts.)
I feel like I made a friend in Pineapple, and I really look forward to seeing him again when I go for my followup visit.
He's got a degree in anthropology and archaeology, something we have in common, so I was excited to talk to him about that. He owns a really beautiful collection of handmade jewelry from various cultures that's on display in the shop.
The shop itself is easy to find, clean, and comfortable.
Definitely consider him and Shaman Modifications!
Ive known Pinapple for a few years now and was thrilled when I finally got to travel to Austin to visit with him and see his shop.
Everything in this studio is how a shop should be run. Comfort for the client and practitioner, wonderful decor and a beautiful selection of jewelry. Obviously, the quality of sterilization and cleanliness is impeccable.
If you need anything, from an ear piercing to a tattoo and beyond, look into Shaman in Austin.
I was SO IMPRESSED with the work I got here.
Robert Michael was my piercer. He was stoked when I told him I was going to pierce my septum, he told me that is his favorite piercing to do!
They were by far one of the cleanest and coolest body modification studios I have ever been in. I almost felt like I was at the doctors office ;)
Robert was so calming and talked me through the whole process.
Pineapple is awesome as well (he is one of the tattoo artists, and I believe the owner of the place). I am a pain wimp (despite the fact that I have been pierced and tattooed on more then one occasion), so Pineapple offered to hold my hand. Such soothing energy!
It is done perfectly. I felt hardly any pain at all, and the guys were so attentive to my needs.
HUGE THUMBS UP. I am stoked to have a little piece of Austin love with me.
Don't mess with Texas. =p
It took me two years to find Wendi Rodriguez. Â I have had my tattoo in mind for much longer, but I needed someone with a portfolio that wowed me and someone who was not afraid to say yes to a tattoo without black outlines. Â I couldn't be happier with the final product.
Wendi has been tattooing for over 18 years. Â At the time I was given her name, she was at Green Apple on 6th. Â Not my ideal spot for a tat because it is loud and caters to the drunken spontaneity of the frat boys. Â Luckily, by the time I was ready, Wendi, and a few other reputable artists, decided to go out on their own at Shaman. Â I highly recommend them for their talent, their beautiful and clean space, and their professional attitudes. Â I paid $100 bucks less than I thought, and it looks 100 times more amazing than I could have asked for. Â What else do you want?
